[Bug 1893277] Re: please provide an evince mailcap file

2020-09-07 Thread Kenrick Bingham
Contrary to the original bug report, it looks like in fact
/etc/mailcap.order also affects entries originating from
/usr/share/applications, as long as the first field matches the name of
the .desktop file (minus the .desktop extension).

So, if you add the line

  org.gnome.Evince:application/pdf

into mailcap.order and run update-mime, you will have evince as the
default handler for application/pdf files.

In any case, even if we may have personal prefernces, evince is probably
a more sensible default choice for viewing pdf's than gimp, so something
should be done to fix this.

[Bug 1716357] Re: a typo in evince-previewer.desktop breaks /etc/mailcap

2017-09-26 Thread Kenrick Bingham
Please observe that this bug causes all lines in /etc/mailcap after the
broken line to be skipped. Therefore it also prevents other mime type
files from being opened by the intended application.

(In my case, I ran into this because alpine start saying that it did not
know how to handle files of type Application/VND.OPENXMLFORMATS-
OFFICEDOCUMENT.WORDPROCESSINGML.DOCUMENT, even though /etc/mailcap
contains the proper line, evoking soffice.)

Would this raise the importance of the bug?

[Bug 864739] Re: Ubuntu doesn't work on HP Elitebook 8560w

2011-12-18 Thread Kenrick Bingham
Mine (comment #14) has an NVIDIA Quadro 2000M Graphics Card, and BIOS
version F.03. It does not boot out of the box with maverick and later.

I realise that it has not been mentioned yet in this bug that with the
10.04 LTS default kernel on this computer, the network adapters do not
work (even the ethernet one) and the display runs at low resolution.

The 2.6.38 kernel (linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty) makes the
network adapters work, but requires the nouveau.modeset=0 boot
parameter. The ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates PPA adds proper support for the
graphics card. These upgrades are of course a little incovenient to
perform with no working network connection (see comment #14).

[Bug 864739] Re: Ubuntu doesn't work on HP Elitebook 8560w

2011-11-01 Thread Kenrick Bingham
Works for me, too. Thank you, rsc!

I agree: it would be good to get this machine booting out of the box.

I also tried 10.04 LTS, and it has similar problems. However, the following
works:
- install 10.04 amd64 from CD
- install linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/fi/lucid/linux-image-2.6.38-11-generic (transfer it
to the laptop using an USB stick)
- add GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=nouveau.modeset=0 to /etc/default/grub
- run sudo update-grub
- reboot

Slightly OT: To get the Nvidia display working properly, add the PPA
from https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates and enable
the nvidia driver by running jockey-gtk.

[Bug 554099] Re: Qualcomm Gobi 2000 3G (gobi_loader/qcserial) broken

2011-07-21 Thread Kenrick Bingham
This still seems to be broken on Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS x86_64. This worked
about a year ago, but stopped working with some kernel upgrade, probably
somewhere near 2.6.32-25. The device does not show up in Network
Manager, and sudo modprobe qcserial gives the error:

FATAL: Error inserting qcserial
(/lib/modules/2.6.32-33-generic/updates/wwan/qcserial.ko): Invalid

Is this perhaps a packaging problem? I think it would be important to
restore the functionality of this device.

[Bug 6289] Re: hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150

2010-05-30 Thread Kenrick Bingham
Suspend in Lucid (10.04) does not work out of the box, either, on my
Dell Inspiron 5150. Same hardware as in #12.

I got suspend working through the following steps.

First, the graphics card (01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia
Corporation NV34M [GeForce FX Go5200 64M] (rev a1)):

1. Add the following line to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, Device section, using
the nvidia-173 driver:

  Option  NvAGP 1

2. Add the following lines to the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

  blacklist intel_agp
  blacklist agpgart

3. Remove compiz packages or set System Preferences Appearance
Visual Effects  None (bug #225858)

My WLAN card is a Dell TrueMobile 5150 mini-pci card (orinoco_cs
driver). To get the card working:

4. sudo dpkg-divert --rename /lib/firmware/agere_sta_fw.bin

(see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/498336/comments/86
)

5. Create /etc/pm/config.d/suspend with the following content (not sure if all
are needed):
  SUSPEND_MODULES=orinoco orinoco_cs yenta_socket

6. Create /etc/pm/sleep.d/10_kenny_inspiron_5150 with the following
content

  #!/bin/sh

  case $1 in
suspend)
[ -x /sbin/pccardctl ]  /sbin/pccardctl eject
;;
resume)
[ -x /usr/bin/setpci ]  /usr/bin/setpci -s 00:1f.0 bb.b=0a
;;
  esac

and run:
chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.d/10_kenny_inspiron_5150

7. The setpci stuff in the previous item was to make the power button,
lid switch and Fn-Esc (suspend) work (see http://www.tedfelix.com/linux
/Linux-Inspiron-5150.html ). To make this also work before the first
suspend, add the line

  [ -x /usr/bin/setpci ]  /usr/bin/setpci -s 00:1f.0 bb.b=0a

to /etc/rc.local before the exit 0 line.

2010-05-30 Thread Kenrick Bingham
#86 seemed to work for me. Dell TrueMobile 1150, orinoco_cs driver.

AFAIK, the following would survive upgrades:

  sudo dpkg-divert --rename /lib/firmware/agere_sta_fw.bin

To make the card also work after suspend, I added
/etc/pm/sleep.d/10_kenny_inspiron_5150 with the following content:

  #!/bin/sh

  case $1 in
suspend)
[ -x /sbin/pccardctl ]  /sbin/pccardctl eject
;;
  esac

and ran

  chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.d/10_kenny_inspiron_5150

I also added /etc/pm/config.d/kenny-suspend with the following line
(don't know if they are all necessary):

  SUSPEND_MODULES=orinoco orinoco_cs yenta_socket

[Bug 252570] [NEW] Problem viewing attachments in Openoffice: soffice wrapper calls oosplash.bin

2008-07-28 Thread Kenrick Bingham
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org-common

As Tanguy Ortolo [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=471167:

 All the OpenOffice.org end-user programs (openoffice, soffice,
 oowriter...) call /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice.bin, or
 /usr/lib/openoffice/program/oosplash.bin if it exists and is executable.

 The latter, oosplash.bin, detaches itself from the calling process, that
 ends silently, while OpenOffice.org continues to run as a child of init.

 This can be a problem when opening attachements from an email reader.
 Some mail readers will save the attachement to a temporary file and spawn
 OpenOffice.org to open it. As OpenOffice.org returns almost immediatly,
 the reader can think it has been closed, and delete the temporary file.
 Then, when OpenOffice.org has ended to start, it cannot find the file it
 has been asked to open.

The wrapper causing this is /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice from the
package openoffice.org-common.

  openoffice.org-common:
Installed: 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2

This problem wasn't present in Feisty.

An uneducated guess for a possible solution: Add an option, say
-nooosplash, that would prevent this behaviour, and add this option to
all relevant lines in the files /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org*
(- /etc/mailcap) in the following packages:

  openoffice.org-base: /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-base
  openoffice.org-calc: /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-calc
  openoffice.org-draw: /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-draw
  openoffice.org-filter-binfilter:
/usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-filter-binfilter
  openoffice.org-impress: /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-impress
  openoffice.org-math: /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-math
  openoffice.org-writer: /usr/lib/mime/packages/openoffice.org-writer

Alternatively, just removing the lines

  # test for availability of the fast external splash
  if [ $sd_binary = soffice.bin -a -x $sd_prog/oosplash.bin ] ; then
  sd_binary=oosplash.bin
  fi

from /usr/lib/openoffice/program/soffice solves the problem for me.

** Affects: openoffice.org (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
