[Bug 1893369] [NEW] gnome-software installs audacity from snap, which doesn't start

2020-08-28 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

I tried opening Software and searching for Audacity and clicking
Install. It installed the snap package. When I click launch, it flashes
the audacity logo and then snap sits in the background using 100% CPU
until I manually kill it. Perhaps it'd be better if the default was to
install the apt package, which works just fine.

[Bug 1842036] [NEW] GUI should hint how to specify port

2019-08-30 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

The GUI gives no hint as to how to specify port, it just says "Gateway".
At the very least, the mouseover could say that you can use the syntax
"ip:port", so the user doesn't have to try-and-fail different methods :)

[Bug 1842035] [NEW] no indication of what caused connection failure (missing trusted cert)

2019-08-30 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

I tried connecting to a fortinet VPN, with the right hostname, port,
username, password. The wifi icon flashed a bit, and then I was not
connected to the VPN, with no message as to why.

Following https://serverfault.com/a/922767/104546 I found out I needed
to trust a certificate, adding that in the Advanced GUI let me connect,
but preferably the GUI should have popped up a question on connection
failure asking me whether I wanted to trust the certificate.

[Bug 1821296] [NEW] light-locker blank screen until switching vt back and forth

2019-03-22 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Xubuntu 18.10, if I lock my screen (either win-L or
on resume from suspend), the screen turns blank, but moving the mouse
doesn't turn it back on. I have to switch vty back and forth (e.g. ctrl-
alt-f1 ctrl-alt-f8) before I see the login screen again.

It's been reported at https://github.com/the-cavalry/light-
locker/issues/114 but I haven't found it in launchpad, so reporting
here.

[Bug 1520988] Re: Copy of large files from USB3 card reader fails mid-way

2017-02-22 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
By the way, should I report a new bug for the different machine?

Just to write this down while I have it fresh in my mind, I have the
tested the card reader with a

* Thinkpad X220 with a fairly fast SSD where copying always seems to work just
fine on all three usb ports (where one is "blue" USB 3)
* Ideacentre A740 with a slow SSHD where copying sometimes fails, especially
with large video files, and all ports seem to be USB 3
* HP Spectre x360 with a fast SSD where copying always fails even with "small"
(20M) files, as long as I copy several files at once (copying one, then
waiting, then copying another seems to work fairly well) – haven't tried videos
yet.

I can workaround the problem by using a USB 2 cable instead of the
Lexar-supplied USB 3 cable.

I've tried upgrading the Spectre to the HWE kernel (4.8.0-39-generic),
which made no difference.

I've tried putting usbcore.autosuspend=-1
usbcore.autosuspend_delay_ms=-1 in grub, which made no difference.

[Bug 1520988] Re: Copy of large files from USB3 card reader fails mid-way

2017-02-19 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
On a HP Spectre x360 4105no laptop (kernel 4.4.0-62) I'm seeing this a
lot more frequently, I'm suspecting because it has a faster (completely
solid state) disk. A workaround is to do throttle the copying a bit,
e.g.

rsync -avh --bwlimit=2000 /media/48E2-F475/DCIM/* ~/Pictures/new/

There's a long thread about similar problems at
https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1500384
where people have had success with using USB hubs in between the card reader
and computer.

[Bug 1665618] [NEW] build tmux with utf8proc to allow utf8 in status line

2017-02-17 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

This version of tmux seems to be built without utf8proc, which leads to
strange utf8 bugs in the status line. See e.g. the attached image on
what happens if the program name has a multibyte char in it (by using
`printf '\033kNAME\033\\' `).

Could we have tmux built with --enable-utf8proc? It would give a runtime
dep on libutf8proc2 and build-dep on libutf8proc-dev.

[Bug 1585863] Re: WiFi malfunction after suspend & resume stress - sudo wpa_cli scan required to fix it.

2017-02-01 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
#64 wrote "could this suggest this might be better fixed with a systemd
dependency?", well, http://man7.org/linux/man-pages/man8/systemd-
sleep.8.html says

Note that scripts or binaries dropped in
/usr/lib/systemd/system-sleep/ are intended for local use only and
should be considered hacks. If applications want to be notified of
system suspend/hibernation and resume, there are much nicer
   interfaces available.

(I can't find from that man-page what those interfaces are though.)

I'll check with 4.9, yeah.

(And yes, rtl8723au ("modprobe 8723au") works fine, while the built-in
r8723au I blacklist since it drops out too much. I don't know if that
should be a separate bug or if there's a good reason for not having
rtl8723au by default; lwfinger seems to be a kernel driver maintainer
anyway)

Hm, I'm currently using 4.7.0-040700rc5-generic on 16.04 with

$ grep acp /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="noprompt persistent acpi=noirq"

and have fully working boot, reboot, poweroff (on the Lenovo A740, not
A540).

(For wifi, I use https://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723au dkms).

nielks, could you try a newer kernel, e.g. 4.7.0-040700rc5-generic ? If the
same kernel doesn't work, maybe A540 has a different issue regarding poweroff.

[Bug 1463422] Re: [Lenovo IdeaCentre A740] Doesn't poweroff on shutdown

2016-07-02 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
I got a tip from Navin at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=118401
to try acpi=noirq and this does not only let me boot kernels>=4.3 (I'm writing
this from mainline 4.7!), but also makes it poweroff and restart correctly.

However, it does not resume from suspend (it seems to suspend as it
should, but clicking the power button to turn it back on does nothing).

2016-07-01 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
pmow, you could give them the below script first, which does the VT-
switching automatically. It's worked fine for me for quite some time.

Save your work first (since the final command will log you out), then
run this in a terminal:

sudo mkdir -p /usr/local/bin

echo '#!/bin/sh
n="$(fgconsole)" || exit 1
case "$n" in
[0-9]) /bin/chvt 1; /bin/chvt “$n”;sleep 1;;
*) echo "error from $0; fgconsole gave $n" >/tmp/VTswitch.log
esac
' | sudo tee /usr/local/bin/VTswitch

sudo chmod +x /usr/local/bin/VTswitch

sudo mkdir -p /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d

echo '[Seat:*]
session-cleanup-script=/usr/local/bin/VTswitch
' | sudo tee /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf.d/50-vtswitch.conf

sudo systemctl restart lightdm

[Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-06-03 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Even with xscreensaver instead of light-locker, there are times when the
cursor disappears on a *fresh* login (not after locking/suspending). I'm
trying light-locker again now, and using the workaround from
https://linux4tw.wordpress.com/2016/05/25/disappearing-mouse-pointer-in-
xubuntu/#comment-47 which at least requires no user-input to keep the
cursor.

2016-05-07 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
So rc6 didn't help (I had already tried rc5 as well, so it seems
anything later than linux-
image-4.2.8-040208-generic_4.2.8-040208.201512150620_amd64.deb does not
boot).

Should I report this to some upstream bug tracker?

[Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-04-28 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
For those on XFCE, gnome-screensaver won't lock on idle – it requires
gnome-session running in order to do that:
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5927

A more permanent "solution" for XFCE users is to

 sudo apt-get purge light-locker
 sudo apt-get install xscreensaver
 # To make the "switch users" button know that you use lightdm:
 echo 'xscreensaver.newLoginCommand: dm-tool switch-to-greeter' >> ~/.Xresources

The downside is that you have to enter your password twice when you do "switch
users" to an already logged-in user.

2016-04-25 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Just in case, I tried moving all the 4.4 files out of /var/cache and
--reinstalling, but that didn't help.

I also noticed 4.2 had a linux-signed-image, but not 4.4, so I tried
installing linux-signed-image-4.4.0-21-generic but that didn't help
either.

[Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-04-24 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Happens on my Lenovo A740.

I tried, as https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=815135#30
mentioned, to set accelmethod to uxa, but to no avail. Both vt-switching
and xset dpms force off bring back the cursor (where locking removes
it).

Drivers used:

This is very annoying – what package can I downgrade to avoid the problem more
permanently?

[Bug 1520988] Re: Copy of large files from USB3 card reader fails mid-way

2015-12-12 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
jsalisbury, I tried the 4.4.0-040400rc3 kernel, but it never found my
harddrive (it gave up waiting for root device, couldn't find it by uuid,
dropped me to ash/initramfs, couldn't even use my usb keyboard so had to
long-press power to reboot). Does this warrant a new bug, or are there
new settings that should be applied when trying 4.4?

penalvch, the update from Lenovo is for Broadwell systems; mine is a
Haswell. I tried the newest .exe, but it won't install from my Windows
dual-boot (saying it's incompatible), just like the page
http://support.lenovo.com/no/nn/products/desktops-and-all-in-
ones/lenovo-a-series-all-in-ones/lenovo-a740-all-in-

I tried a fsck.vfat, but that didn't help. Ejecting and unmounting, I
was able to copy one file, but not the rest (tried a couple times, just
got the same errors).

This computer only has USB3 ports. So I tried another computer (running
Xubuntu 14.04) that had a non-USB3-port, and there the copy worked just
fine.

On connecting, dmesg says:

[Bug 1513564] Re: resumes from suspend if AC unplugged

2015-11-10 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
In case anyone else is affected by this bug, my current workaround is to
put this script:

#!/bin/bash
acpi_listen | while read -r b l s; do
if [[ $l = LID ]] && [[ $s = close ]]; then
   xflock4
   sudo pm-suspend
fi
done

in my autostart, and

%sudo ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/pm-suspend

in visudo.

[Bug 1513564] [NEW] resumes from suspend if AC unplugged

2015-11-05 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

I am running Xubuntu 15.10, with xscreensaver (I uninstalled light-
locker since at least on my Thinkpad X200, I cannot reliably resume from
suspend with it, possibly due to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xubuntu-default-
settings/+bug/1303736 ).

With 15.04, I didn't have problems with suspend, but lately it has this
strange behaviour where it'll resume from suspend when I unplug the
laptop from AC after closing the lid.

I let acpi_listen run while first closing the lid, then counting to
five, then unplugging AC, then counting to five, then plugging it back
in, counting to five, then opening the lid, here's the log:

$ acpi_listen|while read -r l;do echo "$(date)  $l" ; done

So as the output shows, it was only suspended between lid close and
battery unplugged.

I'm running xfce4-power-manager 1.4.4-4ubuntu1 on 15.10.

[Bug 1463422] [NEW] Lenovo A740 doesn't poweroff on shutdown

2015-06-09 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

If I do systemctl poweroff or use any GUI to try to shut down, it gets
to the stage of

[ OK ] Reached target Shutdown
reboot: System halted

but just sits there unresponsive, and does not actually power down.

Similarly, if I try running fwts -P, the hibernate test seems like it
crashes the computer (screen is on but unresponsive), then if I click
the power button twice, it resumes from hibernation just fine.

If I try to reboot, it's almost the same, except the display shows weird
psychedelic lines and colours, but everything is unresponsive and I have
to click (and this time *hold* not just simple click) the power button.

I can reboot fine from GRUB with ctrl+alt+delete. I've kept the Windows
partition that came with the computer, that also powers down and reboots
fine.

If I click the power button while Ubuntu is started, it powers off
immediately.

I originally asked a question at https://askubuntu.com/questions/632591
/system-does-not-power-off-on-poweroff-just-halts but I don't think it
has an answer since this seems more likely to be a kernel bug.

2015-06-09 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
On testing hibernation, the screen first blanked out for half a second,
then showed the desktop again, but unresponsive. I clicked the power
button, it turned off, then clicked the power button again, and it
resumed fine with my terminal open. So hibernation works except, like
with systemctl poweroff it doesn't actually power off.

[Bug 1448555] Re: network-manager does not autoconnect to wifi network after resume from suspend

2015-05-07 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
I'm not sure if this is the same bug, but after upgrading to 15.04, I
have to sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager to get back my network
interfaces after a long suspend. If I test a short suspend/resume cycle,
like a couple seconds, it works fine, but when I open my laptop in the
morning I have to restart NetworkManager.

I attached a journalctl excerpt; I closed the lid last night at 20:29,
then opened it this morning at 08:09 and first tried the hardware
switch, then eventually restarted NetworkManager.

[Bug 1342654] Re: apertium report error code -28

2014-10-02 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
I think that ubuntu 14.04 have de same error but it seems that debian
have corrected this bug (#726590). Please follow this link:
 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=726590

A recompile would fix it until the next time libpcre was updated. A
solution that is independent of libpcre versions is implemented in
Apertium upstream, see https://sourceforge.net/p/apertium/tickets/26/ –
this patch is included in the Apertium nightly repos and should be
included once new apertium packages are updated in Debian.

[Bug 1349056] Re: xfce4-power-manager doesn't suspend on lid closed (regression)

2014-08-23 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
In my case, I had previously had these lines in my
/etc/systemd/logind.conf to make lid suspend work in 13.10:

HandleLidSwitch=ignore
LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=no

After upgrading to 14.04, lid suspend only worked after _removing_ those
lines.

(Note: I use xscreensaver instead of light-locker, and still have to have a
daemon running that calls xflock4 on lid close since otherwise it won't lock on
lid close even though I have it set to do that in xfce4-power-manager-settings.
Not sure if that's related.)

[Bug 1350693] [NEW] no suspend nor lock on lid close though acpi_listen shows events

2014-07-31 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

Suspend on lid close has been working fine for me up until some recent
(last month-ish) update. Now, when I close the lid, the screen goes
dark, but the suspend-light doesn't blink, and when I open it is not
locked and the laptop has obviously not suspended.

This is on a Thinkpad X200 with Xubuntu 14.04, using xscreensaver for
locking (had some trouble with light-locker). The xcfe power settings
are to lock and suspend on lid close (regardless of plugged-in/battery).

Manually doing alt-f2 and typing xflock4 locks the screen as expected.

Manually doing sudo pm-suspend suspends the laptop as expected.

Manually clicking the xfce4 tray icon and clicking suspend also suspends
the laptop as expected.

Running acpi_listen and closing and opening the lid shows:
button/lid LID close
button/lid LID open

Running while sleep 1; do cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state ;done similarly
shows
state: open
state: closed
state: closed
state: open

xfce4-power-manager claims it can suspend and sees the lid:

2014-05-11 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
I may have the same issue on my Lenovo Thinkpad X200 with an Intel 5300
wifi card.

With 13.10, wireless was fine, with 14.04 it disconnects a lot or ssh
connections will hang for several seconds.

I've tried

echo options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1 | sudo tee
/etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

(then rebooting) and

sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off

with no luck.

[Bug 1247137] [NEW] zenity 3.8 --list outputs first answer twice separated by a pipe

2013-11-01 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

Selecting the first item from

$ zenity --list --column Item Apples Oranges Pears Toothpaste

now returns

`Apples|Apples`

while in 3.6 it returned just `Apples`.

Similarly,

$ zenity --list --column id --column Item 1 Apples 2 Oranges 3 Pears 4
Toothpaste

now returns `1|1` instead of `1`.

This messes up a lot of scripts expecting the old behaviour.

(originally reported at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=711251 but the bug doesn't
appear in git master, nor apparantly in 3.8 as installed by the
developer)

[Bug 1084434] [NEW] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

2012-11-29 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Public bug reported:

I had a crash last Monday on Xubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. It happened after
browsing with Firefox for some hours IIRC. I did a kernel update from
linux-image-3.2.0-29-generic:amd64 to linux-image-3.2.0-33-generic:amd64
the previous Thursday, so it might have been introduced then.

The mouse pointer was movable, everything else was still, clicking had
no effect, keyboard had no effect (e.g. tried ctrl+alt+f1, I didn't know
about alt+sysrq before now)

The laptop is a Thinkpad X220 with a hardware switch to turn off and on
all radio (wifi, bluetooth, 3G) so I tried that, it had no effect. Then
I tried ssh-ing into the machine, and apparantly network-manager was
still running and had managed to connect after I switched wifi off and
on again. From within ssh everything seemed just fine. I tried killing
firefox and restarting lightdm, this had no effect though (how does one
restart X in Xubuntu?).

I will collect more info if it happens again (saw
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash after I had
rebooted), but for now I've pasted the relevant bits from
/var/log/syslog* at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/1393943/ (all the way
down to where I hit the radio switch).

Please let me know if there's any more info I can collect, I don't know
how to provoke the bug though.

been introduced then.

I will collect more info if it happens again (just noticed
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSystemCrash), but for now
I've pasted the relevant bits from /var/log/syslog* at
http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/1393943/ (all the way down to where I hit the
radio switch)

[Bug 917554] Re: Missing regular words like maybe and and

2012-07-11 Thread Kevin Brubeck Unhammer
Not sure what exactly the script said, but I believe this should work:

mkdir spellstuff
cd spellstuff
wget https://alioth.debian.org/frs/download.php/2357/no_NO-pack2-2.0.10.zip
unzip no_NO-pack2-2.0.10.zip
unzip nn_NO.zip
unzip nb_NO.zip
sudo cp n{b,n}_NO.{aff,dic} /usr/share/hunspell/
