[Bug 1651818] Re: busybox-initramfs needs different compile options to work with cryptroot-unlock

2018-08-09 Thread Kwinz
I had to install it manually in Bionic. Can confirm that after
installing
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/cryptsetup/2:2.0.2-1ubuntu2/+build/15039246/+files/cryptsetup_2.0.2-1ubuntu2_amd64.deb
it is fixed and unlocking works now.

[Bug 459967] Re: scripts called on ac power or battery power fail (power.d)

2014-04-15 Thread Kwinz
Hi,

I moved away from Ubuntu because of all the grief with bugs,
regressions, poor hardware support, and all the yearlong unsolved bug
reports. I don't blame anyone for this. I know Ubuntu is free software.
But for me personally I can't comment any more as I am not using Ubuntu
at the moment.

[Bug 606928] Re: intel 5300 abgn not work on maverick

2010-10-19 Thread Kwinz
I reported this upstream
http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2260.
I then I had a *lengthy* discussion on #linux-wireless on IRC.

To summ it up for you:

1.) It works if you build from lastet souce (see http://linuxwireless.org/) and
then remove /etc/modprobe.d/intel-5300-iwlagn-disable11n.conf
2.) There seems to be a bug in the lastest source so do NOT use the
driver-select script.
3.) The driver might still have some minor performance degradations compared to
10.04.

I hope this information helps you. :)

NOT fixed yet. I just noticed a regression: connection is LIMITED TO 802.11g

libva: Trying to open /usr/lib/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva: va_openDriver() returns -1

After I manually do:

[Bug 420678] Re: [karmic] Intel WiFi Link 5300 sometimes not working on 5 GHz

2010-07-04 Thread Kwinz
@chielchiel:
No I think not. I am using 2.6.32-23 + the backports package and 2.4 and 5 GHz
802.11n both work. However the iwlagn driver has never been very stable when I
used various versions during the past 18 months. When one bug is fixed another
one emerges (e.g. Bug #352228). Also my Ubuntu now sometimes crashes when there
is an unencrypted AP in reach (could not track this down yet).

Why am I still using Intel wifi if it is so bad?
1. My thinkpad has a BIOS check that only permits using Intel cards so I would
have to patch my BIOS to switch.
2. There is not a big range of 5 GHz capable cards for mini pcie to begin with.
3. Other drivers are even worse.

I hope I could help you. :)

[Bug 601542] Re: gedit needs to avoid freezing the ui when working on files on slow storage

2010-07-04 Thread Kwinz
** Description changed:

+ 1. Use gedit 2.30.3 from Ubuntu 10.04.
+ 2. Open one or more files from slow storage (e.g. sshfs over 100kbit/s
connection).
+ 3. When working, opening and storing the UI will often become unresponsive.
+ This will result in delayed response to clicks, scrolling and sometimes even
gray out the whole window.
+ It is not only constrained to the current file but will affect all open tabs.
+
+ I think gedit needs some more multi-threading, doing the blocking tasks

(which Laptop Mode Tools depends on).

With the current solution iwlagn often consumes 100% of one cpu.
The error message is " iwlagn :03:00.0: Can not allocate SKB buffers".

Still no response from Jean. Looks like he has better things to do than

[Bug 489399] [NEW] CUPS does not find Parallel Port (Lenovo)

2009-11-27 Thread Kwinz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cupsys

Hi! I encountered yet another bug (of which it seems ubuntu does have
more than plenty *scnr*):

I have a Lenovo notebook with a docking station with an LPT port.
My HP LaserJet 1300 printer is attached to that port.

When I boot my laptop while at the docking station and print a document
everything is fine.

But when I take the laptop from the dockingstation and reattach it, I can not
print any more.
The error I get is /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp failed.

/var/log/syslog shows:
hp[3917]: io/hpmud/pp.c 627: unable to read device-id ret=-1
hp[3917]: prnt/backend/hp.c 720: ERROR: cannot open device stat=12:
hp:/par/hp_LaserJet_1300?device=/dev/parport0

PS:
I selected cupsys as the package, because this is my best guess.
If you feel that, this is not a cups issue, but but some other project might
fit better, do not just mark this as invalid, but add the right project. I am
happy to provide needed debugging info. Thank you!

[Bug 459967] Re: scripts called on ac power or battery power fail (power.d)

2009-11-16 Thread Kwinz
The problem is not that there is no laptop-mode-tools module for Intel
SATA (which was just an example), but rather that the part that invokes
the scripts is buggy.

[Bug 420678] Re: [karmic] Intel WiFi Link 5300 sometimes not working on 5 GHz

2009-11-08 Thread Kwinz
Update: tried more settings

GHZ | AP up to 130 Mbps setting | AP up to 300 Mbps setting
2,4 | X |
 X
5 | O |
  O

0: DOES NOT WORK, or only works for about 10 seconds and the fails, unless you
set "sudo iwconfig rate 54M"
X: WORKS, iwconfig displays "Bit Rate=0 kb/s"

My conclusions:

1. AFIK not AP's fault
2. iwlagn is broken for 802.11n on 5 Ghz
3. iwconfig tool has to be updated not to display rates bigger than 54Mbit/s as 0

2009-11-08 Thread Kwinz
@bertrand

Try connecting in 2.4 Ghz mode (give the 2.4 ghz ap another ssid than the 5Ghz
so you can identify them),
"Up to 130 Mbps" setting at the WNDR3700 and
normal "~/ sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate auto" setting in ubuntu.
Works with me.

What does not work see my previous post.
I am considering uninstalling the module from ktp and try the backport package
next.

I am curious why 2,4 ghz mode works with me and not with you.
My Netgear WNDR 3700 settings are:
Wireless Network (2.4GHz b/g/n) Up to 130 Mbps
Wireless Network (5GHz a/n) Up to 300 Mbps
What are yours?

[Bug 420678] Re: [karmic] Intel WiFi Link 5300 sometimes not working on 5 GHz

2009-11-05 Thread Kwinz
I have the same "ERROR: No TX rate available." issue on my Intel 5300 on Ubuntu
Karmic.
I am using a NETGEAR AP.

I'd like to add that I also have serious speed problems:
In 802.11g the speed is sometimes limited to ~100kb/s even when I am right next
to the AP.
ifup and ifdown on the interface helps.
In 802.11n mode the speed is also sometimes limited to absurdly low throughput
of ~750kb/s, again down/up-ing helps.

[Bug 459967] [NEW] scripts called on ac power or battery power fail (power.d)

2009-10-24 Thread Kwinz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

I want a script to be executed when my laptop is connected to AC and another
one when it runs on battery.
For the beginning it should just do

On AC:
echo max_performance | tee
/sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy

On battery:
echo min_power | tee /sys/class/scsi_host/host0/link_power_management_policy

I decided to create two scripts in /etc/laptop-mode/batt-stop/ and
/etc/laptop-mode/batt-start
but they where sometimes executed and sometimes not. I thought this is strange,
maybe laptop-mode-tools is buggy and I investigated an alternative approach.

There are two files in /etc/acpi/events/ :
ac and battery
both call /etc/acpi/power.sh
which in return calls pm-powersave

man powersave tells me there are two directories
/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/ and
/etc/pm/power.d/

the later has priority but was empty on my installation,
so I went to /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/

I created my own file here, called my-powersave

/usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/ lsl
total 28K
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4,0K 2009-10-24 20:34 .
drwxr-xr-x 6 root root 4,0K 2009-10-21 05:34 ..
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1,4K 2009-10-06 23:41 95hdparm-apm
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 646 2009-09-17 21:33 anacron
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 293 2009-10-07 01:02 laptop-mode
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 248 2009-10-24 20:36 my-powersave
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 693 2009-10-06 23:41 sched-powersave

This worked, BUT again the sata link sometimes stayed at max_performance in
battery power.
It worked most of the time if you have not done anything when removing the
power and it hardly ever worked when you disconnect and reconnect in short 5
second intervals.

I think there is an underlying bug in pm-utils or acpi.
I would happily provide needed logfiles or debug output if you tell me which.

[Bug 457846] [NEW] Flash audio stutters on video collaboration websites

2009-10-21 Thread Kwinz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Flash audio stutters on video collaboration websites

How to reproduce:

Start Firefox 3.5.3
go to http://tinychat.com
enter any chatroom with a live video stream

In the "sound preference dialog" in the "applications" tab there are
some ALSA plug-in [firefox] entries, of which the last one flickers as the
sound stutters.

If you switch the device profile, in the in the "hardware" section of
the "sound preference" dialog, to some other setting and then switch
back, the stuttering disappears for a few seconds.

Opera 9.64 for Linux has the same issue. However on Windows the firefox
works fine.

I also tried to work arround this bug by starting firefox with OSS:
FIREFOX_DSP="aoss" firefox
or aoss firefox
but that approach seems to be outdated and did not work.

I have a 64bit installation. It would be nice if somebody could confirm this on
32bit.
Please tell me, whether you need any more information.

I did an aptitude safe-upgrade today.
Since then I have the problem, that xorg eats 100% cpu (1 core) and the system
is very unresponsive.

I use en encrypted root partition and my gpu is "00:02.0 VGA compatible
controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated

This bug was NOT FIXED in cryptsetup - 2:1.0.6+20090405.svn49-1ubuntu6 because
i have
2:1.0.6+20090405.svn49-1ubuntu7 installed and the problem still exists!

I attached my aptitude log, please read it, as the bug was introduced in
on of the upgraded packages. Before the upgrade today everything was
fine.

PS: we need some functionality to undo an upgrade!
I first thought that it was an xorg failure so i tried to downgrade but apt
cannot find the version before the upgrade anymore

I can confirm this.

I fixed this for myself a long time ago by simply adding -X to the pidof
command in laptop-mode-tools/modules/battery-level-polling.
Yesterday I did an aptitude safe-upgrade and the file was overwritten with the
buggy version without the -X switch again.

~/ aptitude show laptop-mode-tools

State: installed

Version: 1.47-1ubuntu2

I attached the correct version. Fix it!

[Bug 194489] Re: ps2 synaptics touchpad causing huge amounts of wakeups

2009-06-05 Thread Kwinz
Thank you for this clarification.

I am not familiar with the synaptics driver source code or device specs, but I
know that at least with usb mice there is a mouse polling interval. Most so
called gaming mice come with a high polling frequency with 500Hz, while laptop
mice usually have a much lower frequency by default. However I remember you can
override the polling frequency manually at least in Windows. I doubt that
anybody needs such a huge interrupt frequency on a laptop touchpad. Is there
now way to adjust the polling interval in the driver?
If it can't be done in software is it perhaps feasible to contact the laptop
manufacturer for an updated BIOS? (Lenovo in my case) Or is it really hardwired
in the device itself.
