I'm experiencing this as well. Starting gnome-screensaver from a
terminal works, but I can't work out how to add gnome-screensaver to run
by default - it looks like Startup Applications doesn't exist in 14.10?

[Bug 152279] Re: [Gutsy] Totem gets aspect ratio wrong

2014-08-19 Thread Lee Willis
This issues affects me. I'm on latest of all packages, and playing
videos on a rotated screen and the aspect ratio is screwed. Playing
videos on my normal laptop LCD is fine. I'll go through the history now
and provide any info that's been asked for. If there's anything else
anyone needs to identify the cause of this bug - happy to provide
further diagnostics.

[Bug 1272131] Re: Totem regains focus on a window when it is not supposed to.

2014-05-03 Thread Lee Willis
I'm experiencing what I think is the same issue, although in my case
it's complicated by running a multi-monitor setup.

Here's my config:

1. Two displays (Built-in laptop screen, and external monitor).
2. The monitor has 6 workspaces set up, and I have hotkeys set up to show
different workspaces.
3. The built-in display does not have workspaces.
4. The Primary display is the external monitor.
5. Totem running (Ful-screen) on the built-in display/
6. Application A running on workspace 1 on the external monitor.
7. Application B running on workspace 2 on the external monitor.
8. Give focus to application A.
9. Hit the keyboard shortcut to move to workspace 2.
10. Give focus to application B.
11. Hit the keyboard shortcut to move to workspace 1.
12. Expected behaviour: Application A has focus. Actual behaviour: Totem has
focus.
13. Hit the keyboard shortcut to move to workspace 2.
14. Expected behaviour: Application B has focus. Actual behaviour: Totem has
focus.

Note: This only happens for me if totem is running full-screen. If it is
not then focus functions as expected (IE I can't replicate the OPs exact
issue).

[Bug 907381] Re: [Dell Vostro 3550] Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected

2014-04-16 Thread Lee Willis
Some good news - I've now been running for 3 days solid with the
xinput's disabled and have had absolutely NO resolution switches.

So - where does this leave this bug - does that narrow down the actual
issue? Is there something else I can do to generate further diagnostic
information?

2014-04-13 Thread Lee Willis
Hi Goran,

Sorry for the delay replying. I've had a couple of chances to test and I
too haven't seen any display switches with those inputs disabled. I will
say though that I've only had chance to perform short tests (A couple of
hours), so not sure it's conclusive, but certainly positive - thanks.

I'll report more as I run a longer test.

2014-03-17 Thread Lee Willis
Hi Christoper,

I've tried the following options from the page you linked to:

  * fglrx-installer from the repository (Login screen fine, but logging in
produces a black page with only white cursor showing)
  * fglrx-installer-updates (Login screen fine, but logging in produces a black
page with only white cursor showing)
  * Manually installing Catalyst 13.4 - display corrupted massively - unusable
  * Manually installing Catalyst 13.4, special case for Intel/AMD hybrid
graphics - display corrupted massively - unusable

Note: None of these were usable enough to determine if display
resolution switching was happening.

[Bug 907381] Re: Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected

2014-01-09 Thread Lee Willis
Hi Christopher,

Thanks for taking the time to look at this. I've updated the BIOS as
requested.

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version  sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
A11
08/03/2012

However I still see the display resolution switches after this (On
Saucy). I note that I still receive the dmesg warnings

[ 16.074915] [drm] Wrong MCH_SSKPD value: 0x16040307
[ 16.074917] [drm] This can cause pipe underruns and display issues.
[ 16.074918] [drm] Please upgrade your BIOS to fix this.

I can re-run the apport-collect if that's helpful?

I'll try with the dev release live CD later today and report back.

[Bug 907381] xserver.devices.txt

2014-01-08 Thread Lee Willis
apport information

** Attachment added: xserver.devices.txt

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/907381/+attachment/3943461/+files/xserver.devices.txt

** Description changed:

A fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 on a Dell Vostro 3550 with all updates
(OSS only - no proprietary drivers).

When connecting the laptop to an external monitor to extend my desktop the
display settings are unstable. I choose to enable both the laptop panel, and
the external monitor setting appropriate resolutions and apply settings.
Sometimes the chosen settings do not take. If they do apply, and I confirm
that I want to keep the settings, at random intervals the display settings are
auto-changed by the system. This may include:
  - Resetting to mirrored displays at 1024x768
  - Resetting to a single display on the laptop panel
  - Resetting to a single display on the external monitor
  - Some other weird combination.

E.g. When using my computer in a time range of 10 minutes i could get
through 5 different dispositions and resolutions. It could be both
display working fine, then only one but with wrong resolution, then the
two again but with mirror, then just the second, and so on..

Some debug information below - happy to collect more if it's helpful.

[Bug 907381] Re: Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected

2014-01-08 Thread Lee Willis
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected compiz-0.9 trusty ubuntu

Some debug information below - happy to collect more if it's helpful.

using the lastest dev live CD as well, and it still exhibits the same
problem - apport info attached - apologies it looks like it's posted

[Bug 1029289] Re: Need to authorize my google account each time I boot the computer

2013-08-06 Thread Lee Willis
I still see the problematic behaviour. I'm on Raring, with the following
package versions:

account-plugin-google
0.11daily13.06.06-0ubuntu1~raring1
signon-plugin-oauth2
0.15-0ubuntu1

[Note: I'm using Gnome 3 via the PPA as detailed here :
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/04/gnome-3-8-ppa-for-ubuntu-gnome in
case that makes any difference].

My Google account seemingly stays authenticated as long as I don't log
out. If I log out (No matter if it's an hour after I logged in, or a
week) then my credentials seem to be lost and I have to re-authenticate.

Is there anything I can do to debug this?

[Bug 907381] Re: Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected

2012-02-09 Thread Lee Willis
Couple of further bits of info. I've ruled out connector issues by
trying the same monitor with HDMIDVI rather than VGA output, same
issue.

I'd also note that the exact same laptop and monitor work flawlessly
when booted into Windows 7 so that should rule out any other hardware
related issues.

[Bug 907381] [NEW] Display resolution keeps switching with external monitor connected

2011-12-21 Thread Lee Willis
Public bug reported:

[Bug 809500] Re: gnome-terminal not remembering menubar preference

2011-10-15 Thread Lee Willis
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 787465 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/787465

I don't believe this is a dupe of bug #787465? I'm not using Unity - in
fact I'm on gnome-session-fallback, and this problem relates directly to
gnome-terminal.

I have a single profile set up in gnome-terminal (Default). This has
Show menubar by default in new terminals set to unticked, however
opening a new terminal always shows the menubar. This is the case if I
open a terminal from the nautilus context menu, terminal context menu or
the main applications menu.

In fact, opening a new window, and clicking on the View menu shows the
option Show Menubar unselected (Despite the fact the menubar is
present). You have to select the option before you can unselect it and
get rid of the menubar.

2010-07-08 Thread Lee Willis
I can confirm this is a problem. The setting works if desktop effects
are turned off (metacity?), but not if desktop effects are on (compiz?).

There doesn't seem to be a compiz gconf key for this setting under the
compiz settings, while for metacity
/apps/metacity/window_keybindings/toggle_on_all_workspaces - although
compiz does support the functionality (Right click on window menu bar
and choose Always On Visible Workspace

[Bug 505821] Re: b43 hardware status changed to DISABLED after suspend

2010-04-06 Thread Lee Willis
I think I'm experiencing a similar issue - at least it seems to have
happened at similar kernel release. For background I'm using a PCI
wireless card with no physical Off switch. The same PC has been
working since feisty I think.

On recent kernel releases the setup works fine for a day or so, and then
the wireless just flatly stops working. The PC doesn't suspend like the
previous bug reporter, but I do get the following in /var/log/messages

kernel: [617690.56] b43-phy0: Radio hardware status changed to
DISABLED

Again - I'm still experiencing this with 2.6.31-20

[Bug 70739] Re: CPU fans won't start

2007-10-24 Thread Lee Willis
Hmmm - having a PC that shuts off at random times, without warning
certainly seems to qualify it under Bugs which may, under realistic
circumstances, directly cause a loss of user data.

In fact this bug can easily lead to an unbootable machine (If it dies
during a routine upgrade or similar as it did for me ...)

I defer to your judgement - however I think it's important to understand
that this bug is more than just an inconvenience for those affected.

[Bug 124211] Re: touch (do_utimes) causes NULL pointer dereference

2007-07-11 Thread Lee Willis
I get this as well. I'm on ext3 - latest gutsy packages (Kernel is
2.6.22-7).

For standard files everything is fine - however I see problems touching
files which aren't owned by the logged in user - but should be writeable
by them.

In this particular case file ownership is:
$ stat Dordogne\ -\ 2007\ 183.jpg
  File: `Dordogne - 2007 183.jpg'
Size: 568711 Blocks: 1120 IO Block: 4096 regular file
Device: 801h/2049d Inode: 5374316 Links: 1
Access: (2674/-rw-rwsr--) Uid: ( 1001/documents) Gid: ( 1001/documents)

The logged in user is a member of the group documents. This seems to
confirm the observation in bug 124358 and is 100% repeatable on my
system.

[Bug 104635] Re: Emachines W2646 fan dies at boot

2007-04-26 Thread Lee Willis
neubert500 - Booting with (acpi=off noapic noacpi) means the machine
stays up but with the fans on permanently - so not a great solution -
but a reasonable short-term bodge if you need to use the machine.

I suspect the eMachines have a broken DSDT - but so far I haven't
succeeded in finding anyone that can look through debug output to point
out what might need fixing ...

[Bug 103845] Re: Gnome doesn't auto mount my SD memory

I'm seeing this as well.

On a Dell Inspiron 6000 with an integrated SD reader (R5C822

slot would mount it and show an icon on my desktop. Under latest feisty
(As of 14th April) it doesn't get mounted and I get no icon. Debug files
attached.

[Bug 70739] Re: CPU fans won't start

2006-11-15 Thread Lee Willis
I've tested with the latest kernel from feisty 2.6.19-5 which I believe
contains the patches from that kernel bug and I still experience the same
problems, namely:
- Fan's don't (Audibly) come on
- Temperature reported is bogus (Either -ve numbers, or very high +ve numbers)
- Machine shuts down under load due to critical temperature being breached.

I can confirm that ACPI events are received (According to
/var/log/acpid). Is there anything else I can do to provide debug
information?

[Bug 70753] ACPI reports bogues temperatures/Fan doesn't work

2006-11-07 Thread Lee Willis
Public bug reported:

I have a problem on an emachines 370 desktop. The CPU fan never appears
to come on and it overheats when doing intensive work (Last time, in the
middle of regenerating an initramfs during an upgrade!).

The fan works fine in Windows XP, and worked under previous versions of
Ubuntu (I think Hoary - but not too sure). Coincidentally ACPI reports
bogus temperatures for the CPU

~$ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature
temperature: -267 C
~$ acpi -t
 Thermal 1: passive , 4294967040.0 degrees C

I've also added this to bug 24308/54554 since it seems related [If not a

Is there anything I can do to debug/investigate this?
