[Bug 1851749] Re: Frequently getting thermal warnings and cpu throttling messages in syslog

2021-05-27 Thread Luigi Calligaris
I am affected as well on a Dell P74G Inspiron 7460 with an i7-7500U CPU
@ 2.70GHz and an integrated GPU + an Nvidia GPU using the NVidia
drivers.

According from information I found here

https://icecat.biz/p/dell/w56752561pth-gld/inspiron-
notebooks-7460-33552288.html

the TDPs of my CPU are:

Thermal Design Power (TDP) 15 W
Configurable TDP-up frequency 2.9 GHz
Configurable TDP-up25 W
Configurable TDP-down 7.5 W

CPU version as read from /proc/cpuinfo:

vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 142
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7500U CPU @ 2.70GHz
stepping: 9
microcode : 0xde

>From lspci, detail of the GPUs:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation HD Graphics 620 (rev 02)
01:00.0 3D controller: NVIDIA Corporation GM108M [GeForce 940MX] (rev a2)

My Kernel:

uname -a
Linux [redacted] 5.4.0-66-generic #74-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 27 22:54:38 UTC 2021
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Output of the commands recommended above:

dmidecode looks odd returning info about WiFi:

sudo dmidecode -H 11
# dmidecode 3.2
Getting SMBIOS data from sysfs.
SMBIOS 2.8 present.

[Bug 1872476] Re: Shared files are shown as folders

2020-05-01 Thread Pier Luigi Cinquantini
Right!
Thank you.
A question, please. Now the official PPA will be updated with the nes files,
isn't?
What to do with these bug-files? Do remove them before the updating?

[Bug 1872476] Re: Shared files are shown as folders

2020-05-01 Thread Pier Luigi Cinquantini
A moment!
I did these commands:
smbclient -L //192.168.1.51 -N --option='client min protocol = NT1'
smbclient -L //192.168.1.51 --user="USER"%"PASSWORD" --option='client min
protocol = NT1'

and now it works properly.

[Bug 1872476] Re: Shared files are shown as folders

2020-05-01 Thread Pier Luigi Cinquantini
I did that:
I addedd the new PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sergiodj/samba-bug1872476-v2
I updated
sudo apt-get update
I upgraded installing the new samba files.

But now it doesn't see the NAS.

If useful, in the beginning I created .smb/smb.conf with these lines:
[global]
client min protocol = NT1
client max protocol = SMB3

I'm not an expert, maybe I have to do something more..

For information, me too, I have the same problem: Kubuntu 20.04, files
displayed like folders. Old Nas, with smb1.

I also experienced the issue after upgrading from Kubuntu 19.04 to
19.10. I am also using LVM as other posters here. I solved the issue
with the usual boot from live ISO + mount/chroot + grub-install.

[Bug 1848741] Re: [amdgpu] Ubuntu 19.10 horizontal graphics corruption on AMD Ryzen 2500u (Raven Ridge)

2019-11-26 Thread Luigi Pezzotta
I'm on Manjaro, Huawei Matebook D (Ryzen version), but I had the same
problem and I solved it by changing my /etc/default/grub file in the
following way:

I changed this line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
to this:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="amd_iommu=on iommu=pt"

then I did:
sudo update-grub && sudo reboot

Everything seems to be working fine now.

Solution found here: https://forum.manjaro.org/t/screen-tearing-amd/63505
(which contains a link to this previous thread:
https://forum.manjaro.org/t/fix-gigabyte-970-990-amd-motherboards-and-iommu/44642

[Bug 1521173] Re: AER: Corrected error received: id=00e0

2019-10-21 Thread Luigi Calligaris
Dell Inspiron P74G, Kubuntu 19.04 Disco, kernel 5.0.0-13-generic.

I'm affected as well by this bug, with ~50 lines per minute of errors in
the syslog.

I noticed only recently the issue on my Kubuntu 18.04 LTS setup (say,
this October 2019). Since then I upgraded to 19.04, but with no
improvement. My errors in dmesg are of the same form as stated above,
with two recurring types of error statuses:

pcieport :00:1c.4: AER: Corrected error received: :00:1c.4
pcieport :00:1c.4: PCIe Bus Error: severity=Corrected, type=Data Link
Layer, (Transmitter ID)

pcieport :00:1c.4: device [8086:9d14] error status/mask=3000/2000
pcieport :00:1c.4:[12] Timeout

That pcie port is shown to be connected to the Atheros WiFi of the
laptop:

+-1c.4-[02]00.0 Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174 802.11ac Wireless Network

The output of lshw for it is:

I cannot find an APSM disable option in my BIOS setup.

A guy named Dennis E. Mungai digged into the issue last year (link
below), and his temporary fix (turning off the report bit for AER
Corrected errors) worked for me, without the need to turn off AER for
the whole system.

https://gist.github.com/Brainiarc7/3179144393747f35e5155fdbfd675554

I find interesting that for most of us this issue affects laptop WiFi
cards from different vendors.

[Bug 1820334] [NEW] Plugins have been split from sahara.git and they need to be packaged

2019-03-15 Thread Luigi Toscano
Public bug reported:

The core of vendor plugins has been split from sahara.git in the
upcoming Stein (sahara >= 10.0.0).

Please package the plugins in their own packages, otherwise sahara is
basically useless.

Both sahara-api and sahara-engine requires the plugins to be installed.

I suggest you use weak dependencies (Recommends) so that operators can
decide to only install the plugins they want.

The Bug is having diskparted fail to report it had encountered a DOS
partition table with a hidden DOS partition that it could not re-
partition or completely re-format. I only found this out by running the
Ubuntu recovery option after the install fail and the subsequent boot
failure. This would have saved me several weeks. [first try was Ubuntu

[Bug 1816283] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 ISO downloaded2019-02-16 Failed to remove a part of itself,

2019-02-17 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Went to
https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-verify-ubuntu#3
to check the ISO check-sum to see if the download was corrupted
or if
I had burned it to a faulty DVD.
However I could find no workable answer to this question.

how to download SHA256SUMS from http://releases.ubuntu.com/bionic/?

Seems the most simple question, however all I get at Ask.Ubuntu, stack
exchange and gethub is theory others problems and complications.

http://releases.ubuntu.com/bionic/ does not offer a copy or download option
for the files.
Other click on the file and all I get in Firefox is link choices. I have been
warned in one of those sources that copying and pasting contents into a file I
create will fowl up the process.

Not being able to successfully download the SHA256SUMS means I only
receive the following when attempting to confirm validity of the ISO

gpg: can't open `SHA256SUMS.gpg'
gpg: verify signatures failed: file open error

All I can do is possibly waste another DVD downloading a valid? ISO with
a bug in it, in doing a new download, but that is the only course I see
for now with the gpg check-sums kerfuffle at:

https://github.com/canonical-websites/tutorials.ubuntu.com/issues/new
and
https://github.com/canonical-websites/tutorials.ubuntu.com/issues/790

Will update with the results of a new ISO and DVD install.

[Bug 521533]

2018-11-28 Thread Luigi Toscano
I'm not sure that highlighting the fact that someone is a KDE devleoper here is
a good idea.
If I comment in a bug of a component which I never touched, I'm not sure why
that comment should have some sort of special marking.

That said, we are off-topic here; the place to discuss this is the kde-
community@ mailing list.

[Bug 1790010] Re: Cursor reverts to default size and theme after login, when hovering over certain parts of the UI

2018-11-20 Thread Luca De Luigi
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1700085 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1700085

I believe it's incorrect to mark this bug as a duplicate of bug #1700085.
In fact, in bug #1700085, the user puts a lot of effort to get hidpi scaling
and, even if he succeds in that, he is not able to make the cursor scale as
well. So, the cursor doesn't scale at all.

Concerning this bug (which affects me literally in the same way), gnome is
scaling everything automatically, no action is needed and everything looks
beautiful out of the box. The only (small) problem is that, immediately after
login, if you move the cursor over the top or the left bars, its size go back
to the default and it becomes very small. So, while the cursor is on the
desktop the size is scaled properly, as soon as you move on the bars, it goes
back to the default size.
As soon as you click on something that triggers the cursor to switch to the
"wait circle" (for instance, Firefox or any other application), some magic
happens and the cursor size is scaled properly even on the top and left bars.

[Bug 1788491] Re: gcc fatal error on Linux kernel building

2018-09-21 Thread Luigi Baglio
Hi, I am new to Linux, to make the preprocessed source I modified the
makefile from: "linux-4.18.1/drivers/net/ethernet/mellanox/mlx5/core"
this way...

From:
mlx5_core-$(CONFIG_MLX5_ESWITCH) += eswitch.o eswitch_offloads.o en_rep.o
en_tc.o

To:
mlx5_core-$(CONFIG_MLX5_ESWITCH) += eswitch.i eswitch_offloads.i en_rep.i
en_tc.i

The file "en_rep.i" is attached to this post.

To reproduce the bug, just call make from the "core" directory, by
specifing the full path to linux root directory (the -C option):
"linux-4.18.1/drivers/net/ethernet/mellanox/mlx5/core$ make -C
linux-4.18.1 SUBDIRS=$(pwd)"

[Bug 1788491] [NEW] gcc fatal error on Linux kernel building

2018-08-22 Thread Luigi Baglio
Public bug reported:

On Linux Kernel (4.18.1) compilation (32 bits), running in VirtualBox
(5.2.18 r124319, under Spy-Windows-10), gcc stops with fatal error.

command to reproduce the bug:

"linux-4.18.1/drivers/net/ethernet/mellanox/mlx5/core$ make -C
linux-4.18.1 SUBDIRS=$(pwd)"

Tested also gcc-8 (8.1.0):

"linux-4.18.1/drivers/net/ethernet/mellanox/mlx5/core$ make -C
linux-4.18.1 SUBDIRS=$(pwd) CC=gcc-8"

same error for both:

"gcc: internal compiler error: Ucciso [italian for: Killed] (program
cc1)"

"gcc-8: fatal error: Ucciso signal terminated program cc1
compilation terminated."

Compilation stops at file:
linux-4.18.1/drivers/net/ethernet/mellanox/mlx5/core/en_rep.o

2018-07-28 Thread Luigi Iapichino
I am sorry that I could not contribute in the way described above. Any chance
that my request can be processed anyway? I see that there is no activity on
this, and at some point this report will expire. Just to provide a little
update: the version 4.4.0-131 does not improve the problem. I am convinced that
it has to do with the audio, as Oleksii described.

[Bug 1779893] Re: my laptop freezes at the login screen

2018-07-04 Thread Luigi Iapichino
Thanks for your feedback.

Joseph, the issue started after updating the kernel to 4.4.0-128. The
version 4.4.0-127 is the last one working correctly. The issue started
as a sound driver problem (drivers were somehow completely gone), but
when I first experienced it I could still login. Afterwards it started
freezing at the login screen. This corroborates the comment from
Oleksii.

For testing the latest upstream kernel, I followed the procedure
described in the page you provided. Unfortunately, while installing the
kernel files, I had an issue with a dependency from libssl1.1 which is
not installed, and as far as I can see not available for Ubuntu 16.04.
Do you have any suggestion for solving this, other than upgrading (which
I would avoid for the time being)? Sorry, as I already mentioned it is
my first contribution to a bug report.

[Bug 1779893] [NEW] my laptop freezes at the login screen

2018-07-03 Thread Luigi Iapichino
Public bug reported:

I apologise in advance, this is my first report, therefore I am not sure if
everything has been automatically collected, or if I need to provide further
information than a short explanation of the problem.

After updating the kernel at 4.4.0-128 on Ubuntu 16.04, first I had massive
problems with the sound drivers. Then they disappeared (by themselves I would
say, I had many tests but I don't think I screwed up anything serious) and,
instead, now my sistem freezes at login screen. Sometimes it gives me the
message that the wireless has been found. The mouse is available but I cannot
interact with the screen, and also the clock is frozen. I have to brutally
switch off the laptop for rebooting. A further kernel update to 4.4.0-130
didn't help, either.

[Bug 175243]

2018-06-12 Thread Luigi Toscano
(In reply to comment #8)
> Is this still an issue with kms or newer versions of the driver?

Yes, it is (sorry for my lack of updates), but with KMS is different. I'm
currently using Debian Squeeze:
xserver-xorg-video-radeon 1:6.13.1-2
xserver-xorg 1:7.5+7
xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.7-8
libdrm2 2.4.21-1~squeeze3
linux-image-2.6.32-5-686 2.6.32-26 (it contains drm from 2.6.34)

When KMS is turned on (default behaviour), the flickering stars when (I think)
the kernel module is loaded (I don't know if radeon or drm) and when Xorg
starts, the flickering is fixed (just like Xorg change some values) and virtual
consoles work again.
How can I help to debug this issue?

I'm not sure whether it may be relevant in this context, but there is
unofficial driver support for your mouse: https://github.com/mattanger
/ckb-nex. I don't know if the source is part of the Linux kernel; if
that is the case, just ignore/delete my comment.

Comment #9 supersedes comments #7 and #8 which should be ignored.
Replacing virtualbox 5.1 with 5.2 and removing the debian repository seem to
have been effective at resolving the problem.

[Bug 1685383] Re: package nfs-kernel-server 1:1.2.8-9ubuntu12.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-10-28 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Apparently the 5.1 version of virtualbox was the problem and needed to
be removed and replaced by 5.2.

I had to learn how to properly remove it and then properly install the
5.2. deb.

ran update again and did not receive a repeat of the error.

If anyone else who got this error had virtualbox <=5.1 go to the Oracle
site

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

and download the
Ubuntu 16.04 ("Xenial") i386 | AMD64
package for 5.2

It will not install cleanly over earlier versions, remove them as
follows.

do not use:
sudo apt-get remove virtualbox
It will tell you it it does not exist or is not installed.
or
sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-\* [Really Dangerous! but if you do not know the
title of the original deb this might suggest it as it did for me. Enter "n" at
the y/n prompt to avoid removing a lot of files that will have to be
re-installed]

** use entire deb title
sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-5.x_5.x.0~Ubuntu~xenial_i386 [This is an example
only and not accurate]

then open the deb file with the Ubuntu Software Center [the software
installer stalled out on my machine] and if no error message is shown
click [install]

at this point I was able to run apt-get commands and Update and received
no errors.

2017-10-28 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Could my just posted problem be complicated by Apt-get install looking for the
wrong repository?
The new repository I added to the source list is:

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib

but Ubuntu is apparently still looking for:
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/dists/xenial/InRelease

[**this InRelease source is not in my "Other Software" repository list,
so where is Ubuntu getting it? ** I am really lost here.]

This is the same repository that Ubuntu Software center is looking for
for Virtualbox 5.0.

Perhaps it is because I keep getting this that apt-get install is
problematic:

Is this a seperate bug and should be reported elsewhere?

It is certainly screwing up any attempt at using apt-get commands.

"Package operation Failed" pop up also displayed this time.
No request for a restart this time.
Noted the "Virtual Box failed." at top of error report. This seemed new to me.

Have Virturalbox 5.1.8 installed, downloading and installing 5.2 and
repeating update to see if there is a change in this error.

Well this is interesting. My attempt at getting Virturalbox 5.2
installed has lead to problems I need to resolve with Oracle concerning
apt-get install being unable to access their source at

deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib
which contains new dependencies unavailable elsewhere.

I'm getting instead
Failed to fetch
http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/dists/xenial/InRelease Unable
to find expected entry 'contrib/source/Sources' in Release file

Or I am missunderstanding their instructions at
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

I am pritty sure this is an Oracle problem unless any of you have another
insight.
Wish I could be better help.

re-start successful.
Scanned logs, saw no errors related to "Kernel"
Other errors mostly to do with network identification, finding sockets and such
which are out of my field of expertise.

Since there has been no Ubuntu operational problems on this computer in
the weeks since the last time this error occurred and no large or fatal
errors in the logs, all other errors having been handled with out
complications, I have the following question.

Could the "subprocess installed post-installation script" that "returned
error exit status 1" be the problem itself?

That is, is it reporting the wrong exit status because of a typo, or
other type of error in its code?

2017-05-20 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Thanks, looks like it answers questions I have not encountered yet as
well. So many sites out there, and I had not discovered this one yet.
Thanks for taking the time.

Ok, Thanks. Will definitely copy this into my personal command reference.
This will help solve a bunch of headaches until I can get Samba's teeth

Re: [Bug 1522675] Re: Warning messages about unsandboxed downloads

2017-05-17 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Is the command "CHOWN" or "CHOWN(1)" ?
Thank you, for the info on this particular error as I had fond that the
chown command was some how to be used,

Probably off topic here, but it would be a great help if you could answer.
I've been puzzled by the (1)? My attempt at finding --h help or invoking
the command using "chown(1)" always returned the "unexpected argument "(""
error. I haven't quite figured out (1)'s meaning or necessity.

Being new to Linux and Unix and a Mister Literal has left me wondering if
(1) or (2) is not part of the command, why is it there?

If that info has been lost in the Unix Halls of Time that's OK. As I
remember from my 8-bit days ( was a reserved character in the DOS world,
Same set in the Unix world?

As a wise instructor friend of mine said "Common sense is only what has
been commonly taught." I keep finding I missed that class at some point.

[Bug 864735] Re: [ATI HDMI] HDMI Audio Disabled by Default (since oneiric)

2017-04-26 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
This problem has shown up in 16.04 with alsamixer v1.1.0. Did someone remove
the patch or fail to integrate the fix into 16.04
had to run alsamixer from terminal and unmute the speaker from there. Muting
and un-muting in rhythem box does not fix the HDMI sound problem.

[Bug 1676141] [NEW] Installer “Caught in a Loop” at "Removing conflicting operating system files..."

2017-03-26 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Public bug reported:

Bug 946663 in the “partman-target” package is back in big time! If fixed
in 12.04 it is definitely come UN-fixed in present distros.

It Originally was reported in and marked “Fix Released”

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-target/+bug/946663

The exact same symptoms have returned, amazingly, in Lbuntu 16.10,
16.04.2 and Ubuntu 16.10. on my wife's HP110-220z 1.8 Ghz twin processor
16 GiB of Ram computer yet under powered for the pre-installed Win8,
which I have now removed all but for the hidden MBT section which should
not have been used with Win8 to begin with.

I say "amazingly" advisedly, as this bug has been around since at least
Ubuntu 12.04 in 2012/04/11.

A guess is the “fix” that was released was never fully implemented, or
has been deleted from the code accidentally. Since the problem seems
restricted Windows while upgrading Debian installations where the
desire is to retain the /home partition from a previous installation
usually complicated by boot problems. I can see someone thinking it is
extra code that is just getting in the way of other efforts.

Others identified the /home partition as the primary culprit, especially
if doing an install where you want to keep the data in it for what ever
reasons. My experience using the work around below confirms it in my
mind.

The details pane only shows about six lines of messages at a time and I
was unable to copy and paste it to a file during the "Looping" install.
I have 54 photographs of selected parts of the data scrolling through
the details pane for an Ubuntu 16.10 install and an Lubuntu 16.04.2
install. I can e-mail cropped copies or attempt to OCR them and provide
an rtf file to the assigned programmer.

There is a workaround in two posts, which worked for me.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/613660/stuck-on-removing-conflicting-
operating-system-files-while-upgrading-from-14-0

and

http://alexsleat.co.uk/2012/04/11/ubuntu-12-04-removing-conflicting-
operating-system-files/comment-page-1/

both referred to this "common bug"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-target/+bug/946663

By setting /home to "Do not use this partition" in the installer version
of Gparted my Lubuntu 16.04.2 install finished.

I now have to revise /etc/fstab/ to mount /home automatically.

There have been some flaky moments since the install, but I am not sure
they are installation related.

I hope the person who put out the "Fix" last time left some notes. Yeh,
I know, we all swear we will document what we've done just as soon as we
get these next three barn burners out the door.

The details pane showed mostly the MTP probe probing every usb device.
Then not finding a MTP usb device, cycling through all 100 plus drivers
again and again and again. [There are only 10 total physical internal
and external usb ports in this HP 110-220z]

Now its time for me to solve the "HP BIOS specific" Grub2 boot problem

Re: [Bug 1663994] Re: ubiquity crashes during installation

2017-02-13 Thread Luigi Agosto
Hi, I verified the integrity of the ISO's files. Both ISO-images (xubuntu
and ubuntu-mate) was ok!
May be same problem with the partitions? I have manually partitioned and I
putted the EFI partition at the end of the hard disk. I will try to move it
at the begin before I change the bug's status to "new"
Thank you.

[Bug 259698] Re: pptp vpn service stops unexpectedly

2017-01-30 Thread Luigi R.
By using MPPE encryption in NetworkManager, PAP CHAP and EAP are automatically
grayed out leaving only MSCHAP and MSCHAPv2 active.
This configuration does not work returning the error message PPTP service has
stopped that everyone here is facing.

A workaround that works for me is to deactivate MSCHAP as well.

[Bug 1654832] [NEW] Network manager shows virtual vmnet interfaces

2017-01-08 Thread Luigi R.
Public bug reported:

Codename: xenial

I have just installed Ubuntu 16.04 and I have noticed that virtual interfaces
created by vmware player such as vmnet1 and vmnet8 are shown in the nm-applet
as not managed deviced and recognized as Ethernet connection. Is that behaviour
expected? It was not the case for Ubuntu 14.04.

So far I did not find a way to hide them. Moreover the full name of the

2016-09-05 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Could kde-config-telepathy-accounts_4%3a15.12.3-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb be
the problem?

Just tried to uninstall kde-config-telepathy-accounts using ~# apt-get purge
and got
"is not installed, so not removed"

one DEB keeps showing up in failed processes, that is:

kde-config-telepathy-accounts_4%3a15.12.3-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb

in

/var/cache/apt/archives/

Noted this Having done this round of commands, each recommended by the previous
process. kde-config-telepathy-accounts_4%3a15.12.3-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb showed up
6 times.

~# apt-get purge kde-config-telepathy-accounts
~# apt-get -f install
~# apt-get autoremove
The package system is broken
Check if you are using third party repositories. If so disable them, since they
are a common source of problems.
Unchecked all non Canonical repositories and updated out of date packages
successfully.
Furthermore run the following command in a Terminal: apt-get install -f
~# apt-get install -f
~# apt-get autoremove
~# apt-get autoremove -f

[Bug 1617564] Re: package kaccounts-providers (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/etc/signon-ui/webkit-options.d/www.facebook.com.conf', which is also in package account-p

2016-09-04 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Was this a stand alone install or part of a series of installs as mine
was?

I am curious if syamkumar Also used the Ubuntu Software Center to
install Konquer with KDE Telepathy and the other add-ons below, then,
received the same error messages after.

If he or she did, the problem might be in the order in which things
installed or one install affecting kaccounts.

After clicking enter to submit this problem report
the I received two more Errors:

"Failed due to problem with installed package Correct?" "Cancel [or] Yes"
I clicked "Yes"
and Got

"Failed to correct system problem Correct?" "Cancel Yes"
I clicked "Yes"
and it repeated,
I clicked "Cancel" this time and expected a problem when rebooting, However, no
more error messages have appeared and Konquer seems to be functioning normally.

In 16.04 installing
konqueror 4:15.12.3-0ubuntu1

Used Ubuntu Software Center to install Konquer with these add-ons:

* Raster fonts
* Service menu entries for ISO handling
* KDE Telepathy
* Plugins for thumbnails for Debian & Open Office and
* plugin for the web doc browser

[Bug 1615750] Re: package samba-common 2:4.3.9+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2016-08-24 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
I should add I was having trouble installing Samba on this three
computer, two printer home LAN [a Dell printer on a win10 machine
scotched the more simple option.].

On this particular Ubuntu machine I had 14.04, and in the middle of this
thought perhaps taking advantage of the 16.04 upgrade might improve
things.

Should have known better, because it was while the list of changes was flying
by is when apt-port poped the Samba error message that opened this bug. [Wish I
had the exact wording.]

The upgrade program at the end reported it was aborting because it failed to
fetch
Http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libc/libcgi-pm-perl_4.26-1_all.deb,
 libcgi-pm-perl_0.77-1build1_amd64.deb, and libcgi-pm-fast-per1_2.10-1_all.deb]
and returned Ubuntu to its original state, however that original state was
14.04 not 16.04 which is identified on boot.

I opened bug #1615771 about the failure to fetch three packages from
/libcgi-pm-perl/. I have no idea whether they are pertinent to this bug
or vice versa.

I'm learning how this site works as well, and just noticed there is a
bug attachment list over there on the right. Can I assume they have been
read and do not provide any good clues.

Thank you for pursuing this confusing state. If you need both snb.conf
files or any screen shots of how Smb4k is set up on this machine or
anything else that will clarify things for you please ask.

[Bug 1615771] Re: fetching libcgi files in wrong directory prevents 14.04 to 16.04 upgrade

2016-08-24 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Apport-bug opened Bug #1615750 open in the Ubuntu samba package: package
samba-common 2:4.3.9+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.2 project, somewhere around the
midpoint of the upgrade process.

Do the functions of the three libcgi-pm-perl files referenced above have
anything to do with the samba-common package?

If so please make that comment on Bug #1615750 so that they are aware of the
dependency.

If not, what function do these files relate to? Just for my learning curve.

This is the first time I have tried installing Samba or any LAN for a
long while, so bare with me. I want to help and learn this new stuff
along the way.

By "local samba configuration that might indicate" are you talking about
snb.conf or something beyond that like log files? Where are log files
usually kept and can they be opened with Getedit?

[I found recently that some windows log files at least are tokenized.
Great for crazy wallpaper, not for meaningful access to the data.]

I'm willing to look where you indicate and supply what I find.

boilerplate problem. Of course this is bug #1615771
I had mistakenly first posted this problem in Ubuntu-doc #356282 where Manfred

His last question helped me realize what I had left out here. Sorry for
any confusion.

Can I use apt-get to download these files, but I need to know what and
where are the files they are replacing?

[Bug 1615771] Re: fetching libcgi files in wrong directory prevents 14.04 to 16.04 upgrade

2016-08-24 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Ack, I left out how I proved my my conclusion above.

I copied the failed to fetch addresses into into the address bar of Firefox ie:

and received:

"404 not found The requested URL
/ubuntu/pool/main/libc/libcgi-pm-perl_4.26-1_all.deb was not found on this
server.

Apache/2.4.18 (Ubuntu) Server at us.archive.ubuntu.com Port 80"

I then shortened the addresses to

and found myself on the archive page for libc where I found the omitted
directory /libcgi-pm-perl/

You can substantiate what I found by following what I did above.
'temporary failure resolving "us.archive.ubuntu.com' message is puzzling. It
could indicate a network problem, but by doing what I did above I eliminated
that as the cause.

I will add this comment to bug #1615771 as well.
I look forward to your questions, And thank you for your time and effort. You
are saving this old disabled vet from the machinations of the M-word.

[Bug 1605138] [NEW] Samba's smb.conf is now "read only" with unknown owner, defeating its Options setting intent.

2016-07-21 Thread L. P. Luigi Espenlaub
Public bug reported:

   Package: system-config-samba
   Version: 1.2.63-0ubuntu6
OS: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
  Architecture: 64-Bit
Connect OS Edition: Windows 10 Home
   Version: 1511
  OS build: 10586.494
  Architecture: 64-Bit

I expected to add a [] and permissions to the smb.conf file as
instructed and internally indicated as possible in the file itself as it is
"suggested configurable options" file. This was in order to share files with a
Windows 10 OS networked computer.

What I found was /etc/samba/smb.conf permission is "read only" not
allowing me to save the file with the added [] and
permissions.

What I did:
1. I used the Ubuntu software center this week to install both the
system-config-samba 1.2.63-0ubuntu6 package and the Smb4k packages.
2. I checked for updates today.

After hours of disylectic mistyping, Ubuntu can see the Windows 10
files. But, Windows cannot see the share folder because "Access is
denied."

To access the //home//Share file:
1. I used ifconfig to obtain the Ubuntu computer's address:
2. I assumed "inet addr:192.168.xxx.xxx" was the correct one out of five
addresses included [inet addr: ... Bcast: ... Mask: ... inet6 addr: ... ]
3. I double checked my password.
4. I entered these in the "Windows 10 Windows Security" "Enter network
credentials" page.

According to Korbin Browns well written instructions [cannot judge
accuracy] at:

http://www.howtogeek.com/176471/how-to-share-files-between-windows-and-
linux/

Section "Creating the Share on Linux" I need to enter the following
lines into smb.conf to allow windows to see a shared file. [The file
does not claim to contain all options.]

1. I opened /etc/samba/smb.conf in gedit.
the gedit header displays: smb.conf [Read-Only] (/etc/samba) - gedit. and
[Save] is grayed out.

Within the file it states that it is a sample file and if an option is
desired the comment symbols "#" or ";" are to be removed, or missing
options added. This indicates the creators of the file intend it to be
edited, then saved.

2. I entered the following lines:

[Share]
path = /home//Share
available = yes
valid users =
read only = no
browsable = yes
public = yes
writable = yes

3. Finding I could not save the file, I copied the text to a new file.
4. I attempted to save it in /etc/samba/.
A read only warning pop up displayed. It asked if I wanted to replace anyway.
5. Clicking [Replace] returned a red banner with the following:
"Could not save the file “/etc/samba/smb.conf”. You do not have the permissions
necessary to save the file." Please check that you typed the location correctly
and try again. [Cancel]"
6. I clicked [Cancel] as it is the only option.
7. I found on the smb.conf pull down menu the [Cut], [Move to Trash], [Move to
...], and [Rename] options are grayed out.
8. I clicked [Properties] > [Permissions]
The messages here are:
"You are not the owner, so you cannot change these permissions." and
"Security Context: unknown"
I take this to mean that the real owner is not identifiable by Ubuntu.

So I can neither move or delete the current file in order to replace it
with a file containing the option I need.

I spent most of the day Searching both the Samba site and the Ask.Ubuntu sites,
as well as associated bug reporting sites.
* I found no references to smb.conf being "read only."
* I found no questions or answers that related to this specific situation using
all the variations on search terms I could think of, such as "smb.conf "read
only,"" "Edited smb.conf cannot be saved," and subsets of these.

Until this bug is fixed, how do I remove the "Read Only" lock, or work
around this.
