Went to https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-verify-ubuntu#3 to check the ISO check-sum to see if the download was corrupted or if I had burned it to a faulty DVD. However I could find no workable answer to this question. how to download SHA256SUMS from http://releases.ubuntu.com/bionic/? Seems the most simple question, however all I get at Ask.Ubuntu, stack exchange and gethub is theory others problems and complications. http://releases.ubuntu.com/bionic/ does not offer a copy or download option for the files. Other click on the file and all I get in Firefox is link choices. I have been warned in one of those sources that copying and pasting contents into a file I create will fowl up the process. Not being able to successfully download the SHA256SUMS means I only receive the following when attempting to confirm validity of the ISO gpg: can't open `SHA256SUMS.gpg' gpg: verify signatures failed: file open error All I can do is possibly waste another DVD downloading a valid? [Bug 1790010] Re: Cursor reverts to default size and theme after login, when hovering over certain parts of the UI
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1700085 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1700085 I believe it's incorrect to mark this bug as a duplicate of bug #1700085. In fact, in bug #1700085, the user puts a lot of effort to get hidpi scaling and, even if he succeds in that, he is not able to make the cursor scale as well. So, the cursor doesn't scale at all. Concerning this bug (which affects me literally in the same way), gnome is scaling everything automatically, no action is needed and everything looks beautiful out of the box. The only (small) problem is that, immediately after login, if you move the cursor over the top or the left bars, its size go back to the default and it becomes very small. So, while the cursor is on the desktop the size is scaled properly, as soon as you move on the bars, it goes back to the default size. As soon as you click on something that triggers the cursor to switch to the "wait circle" (for instance, Firefox or any other application), some magic happens and the cursor size is scaled properly even on the top and left bars. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1790010 Title: Cursor reverts to default size and theme after login, when hovering over certain parts of the UI To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1790010/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1779893] Re: my laptop freezes at the login screen
Thanks for your feedback. Joseph, the issue started after updating the kernel to 4.4.0-128. The version 4.4.0-127 is the last one working correctly. The issue started as a sound driver problem (drivers were somehow completely gone), but when I first experienced it I could still login. Afterwards it started freezing at the login screen. This corroborates the comment from Oleksii. For testing the latest upstream kernel, I followed the procedure described in the page you provided. Unfortunately, while installing the kernel files, I had an issue with a dependency from libssl1.1 which is not installed, and as far as I can see not available for Ubuntu 16.04. Do you have any suggestion for solving this, other than upgrading (which I would avoid for the time being)? [Bug 1779893] [NEW] my laptop freezes at the login screen
Public bug reported: I apologise in advance, this is my first report, therefore I am not sure if everything has been automatically collected, or if I need to provide further information than a short explanation of the problem. After updating the kernel at 4.4.0-128 on Ubuntu 16.04, first I had massive problems with the sound drivers. Then they disappeared (by themselves I would say, I had many tests but I don't think I screwed up anything serious) and, instead, now my sistem freezes at login screen. Sometimes it gives me the message that the wireless has been found. The mouse is available but I cannot interact with the screen, and also the clock is frozen. I have to brutally switch off the laptop for rebooting. A further kernel update to 4.4.0-130 didn't help, either. I had to learn how to properly remove it and then properly install the 5.2. deb. ran update again and did not receive a repeat of the error. If anyone else who got this error had virtualbox <=5.1 go to the Oracle site https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads and download the Ubuntu 16.04 ("Xenial") i386 | AMD64 package for 5.2 It will not install cleanly over earlier versions, remove them as follows. do not use: sudo apt-get remove virtualbox It will tell you it it does not exist or is not installed. or sudo apt-get remove virtualbox-\* [Really Dangerous! but if you do not know the title of the original deb this might suggest it as it did for me. [Bug 1685383] Re: package nfs-kernel-server 1:1.2.8-9ubuntu12.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Could my just posted problem be complicated by Apt-get install looking for the wrong repository? The new repository I added to the source list is: deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib but Ubuntu is apparently still looking for: http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian/dists/xenial/InRelease [**this InRelease source is not in my "Other Software" repository list, so where is Ubuntu getting it? ** I am really lost here.] This is the same repository that Ubuntu Software center is looking for for Virtualbox 5.0. "Package operation Failed" pop up also displayed this time. No request for a restart this time. Noted the "Virtual Box failed." at top of error report. This seemed new to me. Have Virturalbox 5.1.8 installed, downloading and installing 5.2 and repeating update to see if there is a change in this error. Well this is interesting. My attempt at getting Virturalbox 5.2 installed has lead to problems I need to resolve with Oracle concerning apt-get install being unable to access their source at deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian xenial contrib which contains new dependencies unavailable elsewhere. re-start successful. Scanned logs, saw no errors related to "Kernel" Other errors mostly to do with network identification, finding sockets and such which are out of my field of expertise. Since there has been no Ubuntu operational problems on this computer in the weeks since the last time this error occurred and no large or fatal errors in the logs, all other errors having been handled with out complications, I have the following question. Could the "subprocess installed post-installation script" that "returned error exit status 1" be the problem itself? Is the command "CHOWN" or "CHOWN(1)" ? Thank you, for the info on this particular error as I had fond that the chown command was some how to be used, Probably off topic here, but it would be a great help if you could answer. I've been puzzled by the (1)? My attempt at finding --h help or invoking the command using "chown(1)" always returned the "unexpected argument "("" error. I haven't quite figured out (1)'s meaning or necessity. Being new to Linux and Unix and a Mister Literal has left me wondering if (1) or (2) is not part of the command, why is it there? If that info has been lost in the Unix Halls of Time that's OK. As I remember from my 8-bit days ( was a reserved character in the DOS world, Same set in the Unix world? As a wise instructor friend of mine said "Common sense is only what has been commonly taught." I keep finding I missed that class at some point. [Bug 1676141] [NEW] Installer “Caught in a Loop” at "Removing conflicting operating system files..."
Public bug reported: Bug 946663 in the “partman-target” package is back in big time! If fixed in 12.04 it is definitely come UN-fixed in present distros. It Originally was reported in and marked “Fix Released” https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-target/+bug/946663 The exact same symptoms have returned, amazingly, in Lbuntu 16.10, 16.04.2 and Ubuntu 16.10. on my wife's HP110-220z 1.8 Ghz twin processor 16 GiB of Ram computer yet under powered for the pre-installed Win8, which I have now removed all but for the hidden MBT section which should not have been used with Win8 to begin with. I say "amazingly" advisedly, as this bug has been around since at least Ubuntu 12.04 in 2012/04/11. A guess is the “fix” that was released was never fully implemented, or has been deleted from the code accidentally. Since the problem seems restricted Windows while upgrading Debian installations where the desire is to retain the /home partition from a previous installation usually complicated by boot problems. I can see someone thinking it is extra code that is just getting in the way of other efforts. Others identified the /home partition as the primary culprit, especially if doing an install where you want to keep the data in it for what ever reasons. My experience using the work around below confirms it in my mind. The details pane only shows about six lines of messages at a time and I was unable to copy and paste it to a file during the "Looping" install. I have 54 photographs of selected parts of the data scrolling through the details pane for an Ubuntu 16.10 install and an Lubuntu 16.04.2 install. I can e-mail cropped copies or attempt to OCR them and provide an rtf file to the assigned programmer. There is a workaround in two posts, which worked for me. http://askubuntu.com/questions/613660/stuck-on-removing-conflicting- operating-system-files-while-upgrading-from-14-0 and http://alexsleat.co.uk/2012/04/11/ubuntu-12-04-removing-conflicting- operating-system-files/comment-page-1/ both referred to this "common bug" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-target/+bug/946663 By setting /home to "Do not use this partition" in the installer version of Gparted my Lubuntu 16.04.2 install finished. I now have to revise /etc/fstab/ to mount /home automatically. There have been some flaky moments since the install, but I am not sure they are installation related. I hope the person who put out the "Fix" last time left some notes. Yeh, I know, we all swear we will document what we've done just as soon as we get these next three barn burners out the door. The details pane showed mostly the MTP probe probing every usb device. Then not finding a MTP usb device, cycling through all 100 plus drivers again and again and again. I should add I was having trouble installing Samba on this three computer, two printer home LAN [a Dell printer on a win10 machine scotched the more simple option.]. On this particular Ubuntu machine I had 14.04, and in the middle of this thought perhaps taking advantage of the 16.04 upgrade might improve things. Should have known better, because it was while the list of changes was flying by is when apt-port poped the Samba error message that opened this bug. [Wish I had the exact wording.] The upgrade program at the end reported it was aborting because it failed to fetch Http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libc/libcgi-pm-perl_4.26-1_all.deb, libcgi-pm-perl_0.77-1build1_amd64.deb, and libcgi-pm-fast-per1_2.10-1_all.deb] and returned Ubuntu to its original state, however that original state was 14.04 not 16.04 which is identified on boot. I opened bug #1615771 about the failure to fetch three packages from /libcgi-pm-perl/. I have no idea whether they are pertinent to this bug or vice versa. I'm learning how this site works as well, and just noticed there is a bug attachment list over there on the right. Can I assume they have been read and do not provide any good clues. [Bug 1615771] Re: fetching libcgi files in wrong directory prevents 14.04 to 16.04 upgrade
Ack, I left out how I proved my my conclusion above. I copied the failed to fetch addresses into into the address bar of Firefox ie: Http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libc/libcgi-pm-perl_4.26-1_all.deb and received: "404 not found The requested URL /ubuntu/pool/main/libc/libcgi-pm-perl_4.26-1_all.deb was not found on this server. Apache/2.4.18 (Ubuntu) Server at us.archive.ubuntu.com Port 80" I then shortened the addresses to Http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/libc/ and found myself on the archive page for libc where I found the omitted directory /libcgi-pm-perl/ You can substantiate what I found by following what I did above. 'temporary failure resolving "us.archive.ubuntu.com' message is puzzling. It could indicate a network problem, but by doing what I did above I eliminated that as the cause. I got only the "some packages did not ..." "System might be unusable" messages. Since I am not experienced in Ubuntu I do not know what to do to get more specific information. Nor do I have a workaround. [Bug 1605138] [NEW] Samba's smb.conf is now "read only" with unknown owner, defeating its Options setting intent.
Public bug reported: Package: system-config-samba Version: 1.2.63-0ubuntu6 OS: Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Architecture: 64-Bit Connect OS Edition: Windows 10 Home Version: 1511 OS build: 10586.494 Architecture: 64-Bit I expected to add a [] and permissions to the smb.conf file as instructed and internally indicated as possible in the file itself as it is "suggested configurable options" file. This was in order to share files with a Windows 10 OS networked computer. What I found was /etc/samba/smb.conf permission is "read only" not allowing me to save the file with the added [] and permissions. What I did: 1. I used the Ubuntu software center this week to install both the system-config-samba 1.2.63-0ubuntu6 package and the Smb4k packages. 2. I checked for updates today. After hours of disylectic mistyping, Ubuntu can see the Windows 10 files. But, Windows cannot see the share folder because "Access is denied." To access the //home//Share file: 1. I used ifconfig to obtain the Ubuntu computer's address: 2. I assumed "inet addr:192.168.xxx.xxx" was the correct one out of five addresses included [inet addr: ... Bcast: ... Mask: ... inet6 addr: ... ] 3. I double checked my password. 4. I entered these in the "Windows 10 Windows Security" "Enter network credentials" page. According to Korbin Browns well written instructions [cannot judge accuracy] at: http://www.howtogeek.com/176471/how-to-share-files-between-windows-and- linux/ Section "Creating the Share on Linux" I need to enter the following lines into smb.conf to allow windows to see a shared file. [The file does not claim to contain all options.] 1. I opened /etc/samba/smb.conf in gedit. the gedit header displays: smb.conf [Read-Only] (/etc/samba) - gedit. and [Save] is grayed out. Within the file it states that it is a sample file and if an option is desired the comment symbols "#" or ";" are to be removed, or missing options added. This indicates the creators of the file intend it to be edited, then saved. 2. I entered the following lines: [Share] path = /home//Share available = yes valid users = read only = no browsable = yes public = yes writable = yes 3. Finding I could not save the file, I copied the text to a new file. 4. I attempted to save it in /etc/samba/. A read only warning pop up displayed. It asked if I wanted to replace anyway. 5. Clicking [Replace] returned a red banner with the following: "Could not save the file “/etc/samba/smb.conf”. You do not have the permissions necessary to save the file." Please check that you typed the location correctly and try again. [Cancel]" 6. I clicked [Cancel] as it is the only option. 7. I found on the smb.conf pull down menu the [Cut], [Move to Trash], [Move to ...], and [Rename] options are grayed out. 8. I clicked [Properties] > [Permissions] The messages here are: "You are not the owner, so you cannot change these permissions." and "Security Context: unknown" I take this to mean that the real owner is not identifiable by Ubuntu. So I can neither move or delete the current file in order to replace it with a file containing the option I need. I spent most of the day Searching both the Samba site and the Ask.Ubuntu sites, as well as associated bug reporting sites. * I found no references to smb.conf being "read only." * I found no questions or answers that related to this specific situation using all the variations on search terms I could think of, such as "smb.conf "read only,"" "Edited smb.conf cannot be saved," and subsets of these. Until this bug is fixed, how do I remove the "Read Only" lock, or work around this. ** Affects: system-config-samba (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: networking samba windows-10 ** Attachment added: "Who owns smb.conf?" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1605138/+attachment/4704489/+files/smb-conf-properties-not-owner.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1605138 Title: Samba's smb.conf is now "read only" with unknown owner, defeating its Options setting intent.
