2021-06-24 Thread Manfred Steiner
Public bug reported:

Removing current user profile ~/.thunderbird does not solve the problem.

[Bug 1926258] [NEW] Thunderbird does not startup when ~/.thunderbird is symbolic link

Bug description:
Up to now I use ecryptfs for a private encrypted directory ~/Private, move the
~/.thunderbird folder to ~/Private and create a symbolic link ~/.thunderbird ->
~/Private/.thunderbird.

Working fine in the past, but now Thunderbird popups a message dialog:
"Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To use Thunderbird, you
must first close the existing Thunderbird process, restart your device, or use
a different profile."

Error message is wrong, because there are no processes running. Starting from
terminal shows:
"JavaScript error: resource://gre/modules/XULStore.jsm, line 66: Error: Can't
find profile directory."

When starting with option "--safe-mode" no warning is printed.

When moving folder ~/Private/.thunderbird back to ~/.thunderbird
(removing the symbolic link before), Thunderbird starts as desired
without error.

Same effect when creating a new clean ~/thunderbird. As soon as it is
moved to ~/Private and using a symbolic link instead, Thunderbird does
not startup.

[Bug 1908049] Re: Firefox cannot open pdf with viewer (evince)

2020-12-15 Thread Manfred Steiner
Here is the desired handlers.json file.

Because you see no problems on a fresh installed machine, I try again on
my fresh installed machine and I have some new information.

When using an external link (https:///... /file.pdf") firefox asks as
desired. When I use a local file resource (from bookmark for example
file:///.../file.pdf) firefox does not ask and opens it with the
internal viewer. On recent Ubuntu version (16.04, 18.04) firefox also
asks for local file resources.

[Bug 1878906] [NEW] copy/paste (clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 18.04

2020-05-15 Thread Manfred Steiner
Public bug reported:

Since 10 days copy/paste does not work as expected. As far as I have
observed, the bug covers all applications, which are using system
clipboard to copy and paste data. A very good example is the usage of
LibreOffice Calc. You can copy some cells, which are marked with a
blinking border, but you cannot paste the content otherwhere. Most of
time, copying multiple times solves the problems, but that is not
acceptable.

Maybe, the root cause is identical to bug #1852183 ([X11] copy/paste
(clipboard) is broken in Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 (see comment 93))

[Bug 1773484] Re: Login screen not moved to used monitor

2018-05-28 Thread Manfred Steiner
"Beamer" is another display device connected to VGA connector.

The behavior on Ubuntu 16.04 was perfect.
a) the system menu was visible on each screen
b) the login dialog follows the mouse
c) configurations were automatically detected (i guess depending on device
ids). and former configurations restored.
d) if no configuration available screens were automatically mirrored (not sure
if I remember correct)

That behavior is also desired for Ubuntu 18.04

The current behavior:

.. Connected ... Internal LCD ... VGA...GOOD?
-
First time ... Monitor on VGA .. L+S  E ... No  ->
1)
After Login .. Monitor on VGA .. S .. E ... No  ->
2)
After reconfiguration Monitor on VGA .. Off S ... Yes
After Restart  Monitor on VGA .. L+S  E ... No  ->
1)
After Login .. Monitor on VGA .. Off  S ... Yes ->
3)

-> 1) Login Dialog not following mouse. Without internal LCD no login possible.
-> 2) Screen on VGA monitor is empty
-> 3) After Login former monitor configuration automatically detected and
restored.

As soon as I can connect another VGA monitor I will describe the
behavior again (at the moment not available).

2018-05-27 Thread Manfred Steiner
The issue of the Bug description is the most important, because it will affect
most of users. This issue has no link to the i-tec adapter issue, it is also
visible when the adapter is not connected.
I remember that the situation now (on Ubuntu 18.04) is compareable with the
situation on Ubuntu 12.04 (maybe also 14.04). In 16.04 this issue was solved in
a perfect way (system menues and login dialog follows the mouse pointer to the
desired display).

[Bug 1773484] Re: Login screen not moved to used monitor

2018-05-26 Thread Manfred Steiner
Question 1) Monitor is plugged in on standard VGA connector (15 pin
D-Sub). I guess it does not matter which monitor type. I have done it
with a Ilyama ProLite G2773HS and a Samsung Syncmaster S24B350 monitor.

As soon as the monitors are configured, for example the external monitor
as replacement for the built in LCD-display of a notebook, the system
detects this configuration next time automatically and is switching to
the proper monitor configuration, also for the login-screen. This
behavior is fine, but does not help the first time, when no
configuration was done (or it falls back to the starting situation).

Question 2) I am using the P/N: U3DUALADA (barcode D16-00352296).

Question 3) As HDMI monitor I am using the Samsung Syncmaster S24B35

Question 4) Using the i-tec adapter for the additional Samsung
Syncmaster S24B350 monitor was working without any problems on Ubuntu
16.04. On Ubuntu 18.04 monitor configuration is not automatically
detected. As work-arround I open the configuration->devices->displays
dialog. If this dialog is open and I reconnect the i-tec adapter, the
system offers now configuration possibilities. This must be done every
time the adpater is connected to the system. A second minor problem when
using this adapter is a mouse flickering effect. When mouse icon
changes, it mouse icon disappears completely for a short time. When
disconnecting the adapter system finds back to the default monitor
situation without problems.

[Bug 1773484] [NEW] Login screen not moved to used monitor

2018-05-25 Thread Manfred Steiner
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 16.04 the login screen and system menu bar, ... is moved to
the monitor where the mouse pointer is located. On Ubuntu 18.04 login
dialog and system menues are restricted to the main monitor.

So if you have a notebook with defect lcd display you can work with it
using Ubuntu 16.04 and an external monitor, but you cannot work with
Ubuntu 18.04, because you are not able to login!

[Bug 1424176] [NEW] mime support in Ubuntu14.10

2015-02-21 Thread Manfred Steiner
Public bug reported:

I see some wrong behavior concerning mime/Nautilus in Ubuntu 14.10.

I created some packages in /usr/share/mime/packages/ and run 'update-
mime-database /usr/share/mime' and 'update-desktop-database
/usr/share/applications' afterwards. In Ubuntu 12.04 .. 14.04 everything
works fine, the application can be started from nautilus by clicking the
corresponding file (with proper file extension and content magic). In
Ubuntu 14.10 same procedure does not work!

I try something in Ubuntu 14.10...
1) I try the command 'mimetype' - mime type is detected proper
2) I try to rename *.odt to *.odx in /usr/share/mime/packages/libreoffice.xml
and /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml. After update-mime-database
and update-desktop-database /usr/share/applications the *.odt files are
detected proper. I would expect that odt files are not longer detected as
Writer document. I also checked it with 'find /usr -type f -name *.xml |
xargs grep *.odt'. No result, but odt types are detected - why?

So it seems that working principle of mime has changed from Ubuntu 14.04
to 14.10, but I was not able to find any more information in detail.

Also some official packages are effected. For example, if you install
geda and create a geda-schematic file you cannot start the geda-
schematic tool by clicking the file. In Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 it works
fine.

[Bug 1317039] [NEW] GRUB2 GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 not working when other OS found

2014-05-07 Thread Manfred Steiner
Public bug reported:

After updating Ubuntu 12.04.4 (amd64) hiding of GRUB2 menu not longer
works. The menu always appears for 10s.

Reson found in /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober
...
adjust_timeout () {
  if [ x${found_other_os} != x ]; then
cat EOF
set timeout_style=menu
if [ \${timeout} = 0 ]; then
  set timeout=10
fi
...

if another OS is found, the /etc/default/grub entry GRUB_TIMEOUT=0 is
ignored because set to 0 in function adjust_timeout()

In my point of view this is a bug, because it's not longer possible to
hide grub2 menu if another OS is detected on the host.

[Bug 826574] [NEW] Codeblocks cannot build Atmel projects on 64 bit Ubuntu system

2011-08-15 Thread Manfred Steiner
Public bug reported:

My system:
Description:Ubuntu 11.04
Release:11.04

Package: codeblocks
Priority: optional
Section: universe/devel
Installed-Size: 5148
Maintainer: Ubuntu Developers ubuntu-devel-disc...@lists.ubuntu.com
Original-Maintainer: David Paleino da...@debian.org
Architecture: amd64
Version: 10.05-1

Other installed packages:
gcc-avr, avr-libc, gdb-avr, binutils-avr, avrdude

The error:

||=== test1, Release ===|
/usr/include/gnu/stubs.h|7|Fehler: gnu/stubs-32.h: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht
gefunden|
||=== Build finished: 1 errors, 0 warnings ===|

That's clear because on a 64 bit engine there is only
/usr/include/stubs-64.h available

The following work-arround is working:

1) I copy the complete directory /usr/include/gnu from a 32 bit engine
to the 64 bit engine using a different name, i.e. /usr/include32/gnu

2) In Codeblocks: menu settings/compiler debugger ... - select GNU AVR GCC
Compiler - select Search Libraries
now remove the entry /usr/include and add entry /usr/include32

[Bug 810977] Re: slapd remove/reinstall fails

2011-07-18 Thread Manfred Steiner
Dave, I try to reproduce this bug in a clean natty environment (new
installed in a virtualbox) and I wasn't able to reproduce this bug, like
you. So I go back to my normal PC, where the bug is still alive and I
try some additional things.

I see the message Omitting slapd configuration as requested. which is
a different behavior to the first install-procedure where a dialog comes
up and asking for a LDAP-Password.

For my feeling, the problem is caused by some initial configuration on
the LDAP database. This behavior is new compared with lucid 10.04. I am
not sure if this is really a step forward, because configuration of a
LDAP database is a very complicate issue and in my point of view it
should not be done by a installing script.

I will do some further investigations.

Two questions:

1) Do you know the cause for the change of install behavior (automatic omitting
slapd configuration...)
2) How I can increase the parameter MaxReports for AppReports in case of
app-get install fails...

Thanks.

[Bug 810977] Re: slapd remove/reinstall fails

2011-07-18 Thread Manfred Steiner
Ok, I have found a work-arround to transfer slapd into a working state.
This is not solution of this problem, but it helps to bring slapd back
into a running state and so you can continue with openLDAP on your
machine.

At first you need an additional cleen machine, I name it MC (for machine
clean). You can install this machine for example in a virtualbox.

MC ... clean machine
ME ... machine with the slapd install error

1) on ME: execute apt-get remove slapd
2) on ME: remove manually the directories /var/lib/ldap and /etc/ldap
3) on MC: execute apt-get install slapd ldap-utils
4) on MC: stop the slapd process with service slapd stop
5) on MC: transfer with rsync the directories /var/lib/ldap and /etc/ldap
to the maschine ME
(make sure, that owner/group and access flags are not modified)
6) on ME: execute apt-get install slapd ldap-utils

Now the installation sricpt of package slapd runs to end without any
problems. Removement and reinstallatione of package slapd works without
problems, but there is no dialog for configuration (as it is in the very
first install).

To change configuration:
1) stop the slapd process with service slapd stop
2) remove actual slapd.d with rm -r /etc/ldap/slapd.d
3) execute dpkg-reconfigure slapd

Afterwards you will find a new /etc/ldap/slapd.d

So far as good, installation script for package slapd isn't bug-free
otherwise I would not have these problems.

For me it's interesting to know:
1) where is the configuration info stored (because the dialog starts up only
one time in the very beginning)
2) why does the dpkg-ceconfiguration fail if /etc/lapd/slapd.d is existing

My recommendation to package authors. Don't do any ldap configuration in the
installing phase.
Only check while package removement or package installation if there is a ldap
configuratin/database available, and in this case offer the option to
use/remove or mover the old configuration/database.
If user selects a complete removement everything after reinstallation should be
like after a very first install.

Thanks.
