[Bug 1815036] Re: uri defined for connectivity check does not have IPv6 address
As of now connectivity-check.ubuntu.com has still no record and... it causes no IPv6 problem on Ubuntu 20.04. I doubt it ever did. "ping www.google.com" and "getent ahosts www.google.com" show that the system prefers IPv6 anyway. As expected, only changing /etc/gai.conf makes "ping www.google.com" and "getent ahosts www.google.com" prefer IPv4. Nothing else does. I also tried to change the connectivity uri to http://fedoraproject.org/static/hotspot.txt (which has ) and it made no difference whatsoever anywhere compared to connectivity- check.ubuntu.com > As a result, the IPv6 default routes will be heavily deprioritised (ie: having 2 added to the metric) My default IPv6 route had a 20100 metric in every single combination I tried. Using fedoraproject.org made no difference. Note I have a single wired interface, no wifi. AFAIK IPv6 route metrics are only compared to other IPv6 routes, not to IPv4 routes. It's not like each packet has a choice between the two. [Bug 1880258] Re: Add trailing dot to make connectivity-check.ubuntu.com. absolute and reduce NXDOMAIN warning noise
I ran tcpdump 'host ubuntu20 and port domain' on my router and looked at all the other NXDOMAIN at boot time besides this one. 1. PTR request on the IPv4 address of my virbr0 interface. Gone after uninstalling a couple libvirt-* packages 2. PTR request on ONE of my IPv6 addresses. It's not obvious to me which address gets picked for that PTR query. I disabled IPv6 ULA on my router and the PTR request just moved to a different address. 3. SOA local. ?? I also found that NetworkManager needs to be told "connectivity-check.ubuntu.com has no record" about 12 times during boot, that seems a bit excessive? [Bug 1880258] Re: Add trailing dot to make connectivity-check.ubuntu.com. absolute and reduce NXDOMAIN warning noise
> the vast, VAST majority of the time you see this message it is actually not a NXDOMAIN error. I don't have any extensive data as you seem to have but _for me at home_ (= office now!) and without zero captive portal involved, adding this trailing dot reduces the NXDOMAIN frequency from one message every 5 minutes to a few messages _per day_ (NM's default interval is 300 seconds) The "journalctl --boot -p notice" total also becomes about twice smaller. I filed this bug for a reason. > the NXDOMAIN returned by the upstream nameserver is the *correct* response - > that hostname connectivity-check.ubuntu.com.your_domain really, actually > doesn't exist. Yes of course, hence this one character fix which IMHO also removes one large "distraction" from the main, captive portal issue! > if you see this NXDOMAIN "error" [outside a captive portal] it is almost > always just a normal lookup of a domain that doesn't exist, ... which is for sure very rare on my (admittedly headless) system. Not sure why querying inexistent domains would be frequent on others' systems? > and the error message is simply wrong It says "mitigating _potential_..." so it's not strictly speaking wrong. Agreed it can be misleading but summarizing this fairly complex issue in just one line is quite a challenge. > This is due to a Ubuntu-only patch to systemd Care to share the "best" link(s) about this? I mean links to best bugs and/or relevant source code. An internet search returns too many hits! BTW a good and authoritative bug number in the error message would probably not hurt either, see why above. > network-manager could work around this problematic Ubuntu-only systemd patch, With an Ubuntu-only network-manager patch maybe? [Bug 1880258] Re: Add trailing dot to make connectivity-check.ubuntu.com. absolute and reduce NXDOMAIN warning noise
> systemd behaviour could be better for domains without '.' One thing that would help with these confusing NXDOMAIN errors in general (not just from NetworkManager) is for systemd to provide a more verbose and possibly less "private"[*] mode that shows the requested domains somewhere without having to use tcpdump on the side and try to match timestamps, process IDs and what not. In fact this mode could be considered "more secure" because of the added admin transparency. It could be off by default for privacy reasons - depending on where the information goes. Maybe this more verbose mode exists and I missed it? Or a feature request already filed? In either case please share, thanks. [Bug 1880258] [NEW] Add trailing dot to make connectivity-check.ubuntu.com. absolute and reduce NXDOMAIN warning noise
Public bug reported: I normally don't like this, but it's a one-character change so it's easier to start with the solution: diff -u -r1.1 /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/20-connectivity-ubuntu.conf --- /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/20-connectivity-ubuntu.conf +++ /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/20-connectivity-ubuntu.conf @@ -1,2 +1,2 @@ [connectivity] -uri=http://connectivity-check.ubuntu.com/ +uri=http://connectivity-check.ubuntu.com./ Making this name absolute instead of relative avoids spurious resolutions of "connectivity-check.ubuntu.com.your_domain." This removes a fair amount of NXDOMAIN error noise in journalctl. Observing the issue and the fix requires 3 terminals: 1. tcpdump -i any 'port domain' 2. journalctl --boot -u systemd-resolved -f 3. nmcli c down "Wired connection 1"; nmcli c up "Wired connection 1" => observe the NXDOMAIN noise over a couple few minutes Now make the hostname absolute with the trailing dot above and run: systemctl reload NetworkManager Wait 1 min for things to stabilize. Test again: nmcli c down "Wired connection 1"; nmcli c up "Wired connection 1" => observe non-zero but significantly reduced NXDOMAIN noise over a couple few minutes Originally reported at https://askubuntu.com/a/1242611/117217 Plenty of people annoyed by NXDOMAIN warnings, just Google it. ** Affects: systemd (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1880258 Title: Add trailing dot to make connectivity-check.ubuntu.com. absolute and reduce NXDOMAIN warning noise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1880258/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1645022] Re: Sound fails after suspend state
I'll try out the latest upstream kernel tonight. The computer started out with Windows 10 and it was super buggy and I wanted to give Ubuntu a shot. I installed this kernel via USB. I have not tried a previous version of Ubuntu yet. Some additional behavior notes: Currently when I resume from a suspended state, without plugging any devices, I get a popup asking "What type of device did you plug in?" and gives me options for Headphones, Headset, or Microphone. (Attached is a screenshot) When this happens, I've tried all 3 device options, clicking cancel, closing the dialog, and going to the Sound Settings..., but no matter what path I pursue, no audio will play. When looking at the Output tab of the Sound Settings, under the "Play Sounds Through" list, there are 3 separate HDMI audio outputs, the HD Sound Card, and the headphone jack listed. Regardless of which option I choose, no audio plays. If I restart (not power off/on) while in this state, when I log back in and check the settings, all audio output options are gone and only the Dummy Output option remains. Also, after a recent shutdown/power on power cycle to restore audio functionality, audio only plays out of the right speakers. Other notes: I installed the Arc Desktop theme (https://github.com/horst3180/arc- theme). I doubt it effects it, but who knows. I've also checked daily for any updates in the Software Center and have run apt-get upgrade && apt-get update too. Hopefully these additional details will help you. If there are any other screenshots, log files, whatever you need, let me know and I'll provide them ASAP. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot of plug-in device dialog" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1645022/+attachment/4784826/+files/7cqNO.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1645022 Title: Sound fails after suspend state To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1645022/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1333140] Re: Fix udev rules to consider mmc rpmb partitions
Also, I wonder what would happen if I simply erase and format the mmcblk0rpmb partition in ext4. The Replay Protected Memory Block is not a normal partition. To access it you need the secret key it was most likely programmed with. [Bug 995281] Re: glines segfault
The patch that Carrie posted (post #10 above) worked for me on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm a novice Linux user, so most anyone should be able to apply her patch. Here is what I did. 1. Uninstalled Gnome-Games completely. 2. Downoaded gnome-games-3.6.1.tar.xz from http://www.linuxfromscratch.org. 3. Extracted the tar file to the /tmp directory. This extracted a diretory named gnome-games-3.6.1 containing all of the files needed to install Gnome Games. 4. Navigated to the subdirectory named glines, and then opened the subdirectory named src. 5. Added the additonal lines of source code from Carrie's patch to the file namedglines.c. I added just the lines with a plus (+) sign in front of them. 6.Navigated back to the parent directory (gnome-games-3.6.1), and then ran the following commands to install Gnome Games. After the install completed, I had to reboot before I could see the games in Dashboard. ./configure make sudo make install -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/995281 Title: glines segfault To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-games/+bug/995281/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1001717] [NEW] Terminal won't allow other applications to come in front of it when using laptop with external monitor with Ubuntu2D
Public bug reported: This bug only happens when using Ubuntu2D and external monitor with a laptop with 12.04. It does not happen if you are just using the laptop without the external monitor. To replicate, please do the following... 1. Start terminal application 2 Start xterm application - Note that xterm is hidden underneath terminal 3. Try and bring xterm in front of terminal - It can't be done The following behaviour is observed. - separate the terminal and xterm so they don't overlap at all - now terminal behaves normally - move the xterm so that it overlaps with terminal - the xterm will stay underneath the terminal - now terminal will behave normally only when you click on a part of the terminal which does not have xterm underneath it - if you click on terminal where it overlaps with xterm, focus is given to xterm underneath terminal and not to terminal. That any keyboard input (even though we are clicking on terminal) are received by the xterm underneath. ** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1001717 Title: Terminal won't allow other applications to come in front of it when using laptop with external monitor with Ubuntu2D To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/1001717/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 651007] Re: Does not correctly write resolv.conf
use the DNS servers from the VPN does NOT imply: ignore the local DNS servers. Why would it? In *your* case the local DNS servers become unreachable, but not in mine. So in my case it is the command line client which is buggy It is expected for some DNS servers to be not responsive: this is exactly why several of them should be configured. This more and more looks like a glibc problem, not really related to NM. It is hard to ask NM to try to work around every limitation of the resolver in glibc. Suppose for a second that the resolver in glibc were to: - re-read any change to resolv.conf immediately - support more than 3 servers - query all of them simultaneously and return as soon as it gets an answer ... then would you still have a problem? Looks like not! If you find glibc resolver too limited, then try dnsmasq or an alternative resolver as you were suggested? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/651007 Title: Does not correctly write resolv.conf -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 330803] Re: [Acer Travelmate 8100] suspend/resume problem
I have been running without ipw2200 loaded for a while, and could suspend and hibernate many times. Now it got hung, but this time sysrq worked, and there was backtrace in Xorg.0.log. I think this is another issue so I will report it separately, it crashed inside libxaa so switching to EXA might change things. I will do all updates and check again. The laptop has been suspending and hibernating reliably before, in Intrepid, and I also think in Jaunty a few weeks ago. -- [Acer Travelmate 8100] suspend/resume problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/330803 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 330803] Re: [Acer Travelmate 8100] suspend/resume problem
Now on 2.6.28-8.24-generic and running EXA (default on -ati, don't know why it was XAA before), I have been through a bunch of suspend and hibernation cycles without problems. I also saw bug #331415 which could be related.
