[Bug 1081691] Re: Launcher - Update the icons used for the Software Centre, Nautilus, and Software Updater

2012-11-21 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
The software updater icon looks a bit dodgy also - too much shine, and
does not appear 'sharp' enough...

[Bug 1080187] Re: CUPS reports 'Filter failed' and 'Idle - Can't detect file type' on printing a test page.

2012-11-18 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
** Description changed:

I have an Epson Stylus Office BX925FWD, or what I think is an Epson Workforce
840 series printer. In Quantal (Not Precise - then it was fine...), printing a
test page results in 'Idle - can't detect file type' in the Red Hat
system-config-printers application, AKA 'Printing' (the default printing
manager', and 'Filter failed' in View Attributes window.
This didn't happen in Precise, and it is likely a fault in cups, not Red
Hat's utility, as I had set the Printer up using localhost:631 and returned the
same error...

  http://i49.tinypic.com/2jcf2w5.png
+
+ This worked previously in quantal, so it is probably caused by an
+ update, and printing anything else works fine.

[Bug 1045126] Re: minimize effect broken

2012-11-15 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
BTW You can set minimize-speed-threshold to something like two, and on
the second minimize, the window will go amazingly fast because it has
reached the treshold, because the minimize count will have hit two (the
threshold). Shouldnt the minimize speed be static?

[Bug 1072736] [NEW] Xorg randomly crashes with [Ctrl + Alt + F7] session left with the boot up logs.

2012-10-29 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Public bug reported:

Unable to reproduce due to the randomness and unpredictability of the bug,
though I was dragging something with the mouse at the time, and the dragging
cursor was layered onto the log.
Dragging an image, then bam! Suddenly the screen goes black, like it's
sleeping, but then the boot-up log appears (The one that displayed when [Esc]
is pressed at the Plymouth screen), and the cursor is overlayed onto the log.
It looks like the log is static.

[Bug 1069368] [NEW] Significant drop in network performance when wireless USB adapter is plugged into motherboard ports.

2012-10-21 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Public bug reported:

To be honest, I am not sure which package this falls into.
I realised quite some time ago that when my wireless adapter is plugged into my
back motherboard USB ports, it takes about 5-30 seconds to detect and connect
to a network. Connected to the front-panel ports on my case, this period is
vastly shorter at 5-10 seconds max.
`lsusb` reports five of my ports as 1.1 for some reason, although a man named
John Grubber says that my motherboard may assign buses to certain ports if a
1.1 USB is connected, so the back ports will become legacy...
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1269622/
When benchmarking an ext4 formatted flash drive, the read speeds were faster
(slightly) than the front panel ports, so maybe this is my network USB. I am
not sure if this is something to do with the BIOS/MB or Ubuntu.

Connected to the front panel ports, the average download speed is at 30MB/s at
http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/, and at the motherboard ports, these
are at about 5MB/s.
My network USB is a Belkin F6D4050 (N150).

BTW, in syslog, my DELL keyboard is marked as a low-speed device...

[Bug 1069050] [NEW] Right-click colours inconsistent!

2012-10-20 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Public bug reported:

When right clicking the desktop or most other things, the colour for the menu
is dark as in the 11.10 release, like this:
http://i48.tinypic.com/6nzbyu.png
But when right clicking specific applications, like chromium or firefox, the
menu is light as in the 12.04 release, like this:
http://i48.tinypic.com/2z6uwx1.png

Is this a design choice, or a bug in the new light-themes package?
Thanks.

[Bug 1047921] [NEW] GDebi loses globalmenu integration directly after password prompt.

2012-09-08 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Public bug reported:

I installed the Phoronix Test Suite via the GDebi pacakg installer, but
after it got my password, the toolbar went to the down to the window,
rather than the top panel as most apps do (and they fade in when hovered
over and the close min max buttons are there).

I beleive that the 'problem' is caused by GDebi relaunching itself via gksu or
gksudo, as opening gui apps with this command loses globalmenu integration
(Only temporary - fixes on relaunch.).
Reconstruction after password prompt:
http://i45.tinypic.com/2r7544i.png
(recreated using gksudo but outcome is identical)
Screenshot before password prompt:
http://i48.tinypic.com/1e1552.png

I beleive system specs are irrelevant.

And if you know what bug apport was trying to report in the firs place, simply
press Alt + F2, or open a terminal, and type 'ubuntu-bug gedit', or whatever

You can install it through this method:

sudo apt-get install linux-crashdump
sudo reboot

[Bug 1043755] Re: Watchdog detected hard lockup on cpu 0 on shutdown

2012-09-03 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
** Description changed:

Ocasionally, when I shut down, I am sent to the plymouth splash screen as
usual, however the ubuntu logo and the progress dots are static - they are not
moving. This has been happening more recently over the past week.
The hard drive LED on my case is not lit up at all when this happens.

  EDIT:
More info has been uncovered, after quietsplash was turned off at shutdown
and boot, these logs were in my view:

After a fresh install without the chromium browser, bug still persists.
Will remove the fglrx driver and inspect untill the bug reoccurs.

2012-09-02 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Have removed the fglrx driver and I am now with the somewhat slow Gallium
driver. None of the bug so far...
At the moment, my two main suspects are the Linux kernel or the fglrx driver.

And BTW, Alt + SysRq + REISUB has no effect on the freeze. So this is a
kernel crash?

[Bug 1043755] Re: Plymouth screen hangs on shutdown

2012-08-31 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Darn! It happened to me again, this time with the logs, but I missed the
crucial point where it said BUG: Overflow ... ? ... Kernel ...
Here is what I have written down:

WARNING
BUG: (Did not completely see this message, something about kernel overflow)

At /build/buildd/linux-3.2.0/kernel/watchdog.c:241
watchdog_overflow_callback+0x9a/0xc0 ()
Watchdog detected hard lockup on cpu 0

Do you know where these logs are saved?
At the moment it looks like some sort of kernel bug and some lockup on the CPU.

I had looked up the /build directory but it was nowhere to be found.
This seems to be the same problem as me, though slightly different
http://lkml.indiana.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/1107.1/02053.html, also this
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=822287.
This, I beleive is the code in the kernel which triggers this log output which
may help you to understand the cause of the error
http://lxr.free-electrons.com/source/kernel/watchdog.c#L214.

Also, if of any intrest, I had enabled the Secure Virtualisation Mode
(AMD-V) in the BIOS for utilising multiple cores in VirtualBox. And,
come to mention it I did see something like 'vbox' in those logs...

2012-08-30 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
So now I should just keep using my box as normal until I get a halt like this,
then I will look at what the log says and report back to this page.
But, just for the sake of another opinion, do you think holding down the power
button damages my setup (If your response is that it damages the Hard Disk,
what if the Hard Drive LED is not active?)

What, at this point is in the list of possible culprits? Graphics Card? Driver?

Ok done!

Results:
Ctrl Alt F1 : OK
Log in : OK
sudo -s : OK
grep splash /proc/cmdline : OK (Returned nothing and gave me a new prompt)
service lightdm stop : OK (Something like lightdm stopping/waiting, then new
prompt)
plymouthd --mode=shutdown : OK
plymouth show-splash : OK (Gave me what I would have seen when pressing Esc on
a normal splash screen, but stopped on Stopping system V runlevel
compatibility [OK]. I then pressed Ctrl Alt F1)
Ctrl Alt F1 : OK
plymouth quit : OK
service lightdm start : OK (Got me into the Unity greeter like on a usual boot.)

[Bug 1038964] [NEW] Launcher name does not preview on first mouseover.

2012-08-20 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Public bug reported:

When the mouse hovers over a unity icon for the first time, the Name of the app
does not preview in the black arrow, the name will only display after the mouse
is taken away from the icon and re-hovered over it - so it seems as if the
first mouse-over was only to wake it up, or initialize it, and the second is to
actually request the name.
I do not remember having this bug after a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, ony
after an update within the last one or two weeks from the time of reporting of
this bug.

ASUS M5A78L-M LX V2 Motherboard, 8191MB Crucial Ballistix Sport, AMD
Athlon II X2 255 C3, Sapphire AMD Radeon HD 6570.

Does not nessecarily a bug with the slideshow, rather the installer
itself as a whole.

[Bug 1013416] [NEW] Icons on desktop inconsistent.

2012-06-14 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Public bug reported:

When the icons on the desktop are placed automatically, or is selected to
'Organize Desktop by Name', the icons are arranged in an acceptable order,
seperated fairly as shown here -http://oi45.tinypic.com/244we46.jpg.
But when the user manually arranges the icons, the slots (Can I call them
that?) are included in places so that the text can overlap or the icon layout
is inconsistent (http://oi46.tinypic.com/15xpklh.jpg). This looks ugly unless
you right-click and 'Organize Desktop by Name'.

It would be better and more astetically pleasing if the icons were
organized properly in consistent spaces.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1003051] [NEW] 'Paste' button is greyed out.

2012-05-22 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Public bug reported:

When copying and pasting, (.odf file in this case, but I have
experienced this with other files), upon right-clicking the file, I

[Bug 980472] Re: Inappropriate ioctl for device when ejecting USB flash drive

2012-05-19 Thread Marco M Scannadinari
Messelink's suggestion solved my problem, altough I was trying to eject
internal DVDRW/CDRW drive.

Steps:

1. 'sudo eject /dev/sr0' (error)

2. 'file /dev/sr0' ('block special')

3. 'sudo eject -i off' ('CD drive may be ejected with device button')

I suggest to merge bug #398670 and bug #875543 with this one, since
their bug is unsolved.
