[Bug 1286552] Re: No wifi after suspend

2014-04-27 Thread Mark Rowan
Removing Jupiter (as in comment
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1286552/comments/60
) has solved the problem for me. Additionally, suspending is now back to
pre-13.04 speeds on my Thinkpad X220 (i.e. under 2 seconds).

I believe I have the same problem as Sam. Nothing has ever shown up
under my Facebook account in Gwibber. I've attached my output for

In addition, to get my Facebook account to be added at all to Gwibber I
had to increase the timeouts in
/usr/share/pyshared/gwibber/microblog/util/facelib.py as described at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gwibber/+bug/552227/comments/70
. I don't know if this bug is down to a timeouts problem as well, but
from a glance at the attached gwibber-service output, it might be
somewhere to start from...

[Bug 587228] Re: Adding additional keyboard layouts causes gnome-settings-daemon to use max CPU

2010-06-02 Thread Mark Rowan
I usually have the same problem; after entering 'continue' at gdb's
prompt, I can recreate the bug but then not ctrl+c back out to gdb's
prompt.

I tried it again just now and, although I was unable this time to
recreate the 100% CPU bug for some unknown reason, once I added and
removed a new keyboard layout twice I got an error from g-s-d and
obtained a backtrace (attached).

Like I said, I'm not sure if this particular backtrace applies to the
bug in question, but it did occur after following the same steps which
usually recreate the bug.

[Bug 587228] Re: Adding additional keyboard layouts causes gnome-settings-daemon to use max CPU

2010-06-01 Thread Mark Rowan
I've struggled to get a backtrace as gdb hangs when using it against a
running gnome-settings-daemon PID (not even responding to Ctrl+C), but
when killing all running gnome-settings-daemon processes and then
starting gdb with a new gnome-settings-daemon process, I got the
following results:

GNU gdb (GDB) 7.1-ubuntu

This GDB was configured as i486-linux-gnu.

** At this point, I added a new keyboard layout to the Keyboard
Preferences dialogue and the CPU usage went up to 100% until I removed
the new layout. I then executed 'killall gnome-settings-daemon' from a
terminal.

Program exited normally.
(gdb) backtrace full

(gdb) info registers

(gdb)

** At this point, after realising that gdb didn't seem to have picked anything
up, I added a new keyboard layout again in the Keyboard Preferences dialogue.
The CPU usage went up to 100% and the following two lines were output from gdb:

(gnome-settings-daemon:25101): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple:
assertion `dest_width  0' failed

(gnome-settings-daemon:25101): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref:
assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

** After this I attempted to use Ctrl+C to kill the process inside gdb, but at
this point gdb hung and I was unable to continue debugging. I hope the above
two lines are of some use. Please inform me of how I might be able to generate
a proper stack trace if not.

[Bug 587228] Re: Adding additional keyboard layouts causes gnome-settings-daemon to use max CPU

2010-06-01 Thread Mark Rowan
To clarify, the 'Program exited normally' as soon as it had run and re-
drawn the window settings correctly. So I'm not sure even if gdb was
picking up the action of me adding a new keyboard layout mentioned in my
first comment, above.

But as I said, every time I try to kill the running gnome-settings-
daemon from within gdb, gdb hangs making it impossible to proceed any
further in generating a backtrace.

[Bug 587228] Re: Adding additional keyboard layouts causes gnome-settings-daemon to use max CPU

2010-06-01 Thread Mark Rowan
My problem occurs in point 5 on the https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace
page: The program will continue running. Perform any actions necessary
to reproduce the crash. If the program hangs but doesn't crash you can
press ctrl+c in gdb while the program is frozen and then continue with
the next step.

Gnome-settings-daemon does not hang or crash, but continues to function
normally (aside from the 100% CPU usage), and pressing ctrl+c prints
'^C' to the terminal but does not kill gnome-settings-daemon or present
me with a gdb command line from which to generate a backtrace.

[Bug 587228] [NEW] Adding additional keyboard layouts causes gnome-settings-daemon to use max CPU

2010-05-29 Thread Mark Rowan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Using Lucid, when adding an additional keyboard layout (various layouts
tested), the indicator panel draws the keyboard indicator icon, and
gnome-settings-daemon instantly starts using 100% CPU and continues to
do so forever. When the second keyboard layout is removed, gnome-
settings-daemon's CPU usage drops back to normal.

[Bug 341649] [NEW] Eee PC internal microphone inverts noise cancellation

2009-03-12 Thread Mark Rowan
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 331130 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/331130

Public bug reported:

The inbuilt stereo microphones at the bottom of the Eee 901's screen are
supposed to allow directional recording and noise cancellation. However,
some setting somewhere, perhaps in the sound driver, appears to be
inverted, such that the mic picks up sound very clearly on either side
of the Eee, and nothing at all from directly in front. The two internal
mics seem to be combined in such a way as to cancel sound from the
middle, which is the opposite behaviour to that expected (cancelling
surrounding sound, and picking up only the user's voice from the
centre).

E.g. if I sit and talk to the Eee facing it directly, my voice is not
captured (or rather, it is cancelled out by the stereo mic). As I move
left and right, to about 45 degrees either side of straight-ahead, my
voice becomes clear and is recorded perfectly well. Alternatively,
placing a finger or blue-tac over one of the microphones will also cause
the sound to be picked up correctly, as the noise cancellation cannot be
performed.

Using Ubuntu 8.10 with the Array kernel (http://www.array.org).

Expected results: sounds occurring directly in front of the Eee's
internal microphones should be captured, with surrounding sounds
cancelled through the noise cancellation feature of the dual
microphones.

Actual results: sounds occurring directly in front of the Eee are
cancelled, with surrounding sounds at 45+ degrees from centre picked up
instead.

This bug has also been reported (with confirmation from other users)
under https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/331130 but it
looks like it may be an issue specifically with the Array kernel, so I
am reporting it here also.

[Bug 331130] Re: Eee PC internal microphone inverts noise cancellation

2009-02-18 Thread Mark Rowan
Just speculating, as I don't know the mechanics of dual-mic noise
cancellation, but is it possible that in some Eee PCs the physical
location of the microphones is swapped, causing the inverted noise
cancellation pattern? If so, could a basic kernel / ALSA update swap the
microphones back in software?

[Bug 152123] Re: sound preview doesn't stop when using the mouse wheel

2008-11-06 Thread Mark Rowan
Additionally, another instantiation of this bug occurs when the mouse is
hovered over a media file which is already selected, and then deleted
whilst the preview is playing.

To recreate: select a music or other sound file by clicking once. Hover
the mouse over the file until the preview begins to play. Now delete the
media file by pressing 'Delete' on the keyboard, without moving the
mouse.

What should happen: The file is moved to Trash, and the preview should
end.

What actually happens: The file is moved to Trash, but the preview still
continues from the 'phantom' file.

[Bug 234239] Re: drm_sysfs_suspend uses KERN_ERR in printk

2008-06-10 Thread Mark Rowan
I haven't yet been offered an updated Hardy kernel which fixes this
issue; is it upcoming or will the patch only be released to future
Intrepid users?

[Bug 234239] Re: drm_sysfs_suspend uses KERN_ERR in printk

2008-06-10 Thread Mark Rowan
Thanks, Tim. I should have mentioned that this is, of course, already
enabled.

I've had several linux-image update packages since Martin's message on
4th June (I'm currently running linux-image-2.6.24-18.32) but none of
the changelogs seem to have mentioned the drm_sysfs_suspend issue, nor
has the issue been fixed.

Is mine the latest linux-image from hardy-proposed or am I missing
something simple?

2008-06-10 Thread Mark Rowan
Hmm.. make that linux-image-2.6.24-19, which I've inexplicably just been
offered! The kernel update is installed, and I can confirm that the fix
for this bug is successful.

[Bug 159315] Re: [Upstream] [hardy] Assumes theme background colour is white.

2008-04-27 Thread Mark Rowan
There is a related OOo bug at
http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=70501 which has been
open for some time (since at least OOo 2.0.2).

Using any dark desktop theme will cause OOo to enter high-contrast
accessibility mode, regardless of the setting of the Automatically
detect high-contrast... flag.

[Bug 78661] Re: Black themes/High Contrast Inverse theme Bugs

2008-04-26 Thread Mark Rowan
If you look at the comments on http://www.gnome-
look.org/content/show.php/Neutronium+Unity?content=59189 you will notice
the following solution to the above problem, which I can confirm works
for me with Ubuntu 8.04, Firefox 3b5, and the Neutronium Unity dark
theme. It involves editing
~/.mozilla/firefox/profile/chrome/userContent.css :

In order to work porperly with FF3 use this userContent.css instead of
the provided one (I added -moz-appearance: none !important;):

input {
border: 2px inset white;
background-color: white;
color: black;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
}
textarea {
border: 2px inset white;
background-color: white;
color: black;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
}
select {
border: 2px inset white;
background-color: white;
color: black;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
}
input[type=radio],
input[type=checkbox] {
border: 2px inset white ! important;
background-color: white ! important;
color: ThreeDFace ! important;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
}
*|*::-moz-radio {
background-color: white;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
}
button,
input[type=reset],
input[type=button],
input[type=submit] {
border: 2px outset white;
background-color: #ee;
color: black;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
}
body {
background-color: white;
color: black;
display: block;
margin: 8px;
-moz-appearance: none !important;
}
