[Bug 107881] Re: Edgy Feisty Alt CD upgrade update-manager fails

2007-06-07 Thread Martin Andersen
Finally, after running cdromupgrade about 5 times, I got it upgraded.
It actually didn't quit after the above error like it said it would, and there
was an identical about sound-juicer, before continuing.

Here's a summary:
Could not install 'Rhythmbox'.
The upgrade has abortedetc
package rhythmbox is already installed and configured

Could not install 'sound-juicer'
package sound-juicer is already installed and configured

Later...

Could not install 'konq-kim'
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

At end...
Sorry, the package Rhythmbox failed to install or upgrade
2nd error dialog:
Sorry, the package sound-juicer failed to install or upgrade
3rd error dialog:
Sorry, the package konq-kim failed to install or upgrade
4th error dialog:
Sorry, the package update-manager failed to install or upgrade
Final dialog:
Could not install the upgrades
The upgrade aborts now. Your system could be in an unusable state. A recovery
will run now (dpkg --configure -a).

Ran cdromupdate a 5th time: 70 packages to upgrade. Fetching 2 files.
Rhythmbox and Sound Juicer was configured this time.
Error:
Could not install 'konq-kim'
The upgrade has aborted.
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2

End of install process:
Sorry, the package konq-kim failed to install or upgrade

I don'tt use KDE, and don't know what konq-kim is, so not overly concerned. I
installed Konqueror some point to test the browser and file manager
capabilities. I have a few KDE apps installed too.
But the upgrade finished, finally, with most errors resolver. I'm guessing the
other CD-RW drive has some occasional problems reading CD-Rs, hence producing
random package errors and MD5 errors. The DVD-ROM drive seem to have done
better.
Now I just have to figure out why I no longer have permission to eject my
CDs... (having to go in the terminal for this is ridiculous).

[Bug 107881] Re: Edgy Feisty Alt CD upgrade update-manager fails

2007-06-06 Thread Martin Andersen
The upgrade-manager specifically said it was disabling 3rd-party repositories
for the upgrade.
All 3rd-party repositories are currently disabled. My sources-list now point to
Feisty repositories, despite the process having been aborted. It warned the
system might be in an unstable state.

Anyway, I ran synaptic, and removed one broken package, to do with HP
printing, since I don't have an HP printer anyway.

I re-ran the installer CD, which has previously been verified. This time there
were less packages to fetch and install, so presumably some packages were
successfully installed and not reverted; it failed previously during the
Configuration phase. This time around though, it went to fetch the 1118
packages. but in the end failed with MD5 sum errors.
Here's an extract from the end of main.log:
Failed to fetch cdrom:[Ubuntu 7.04 _Feisty Fawn_ - Release i386

Apt.log speaks of broken dependencies.
I might try a 3rd time, just to see what happens, though I have to go to bed
and cannot wait for it to finish.

[Bug 107881] Re: Edgy Feisty Alt CD upgrade update-manager fails

2007-06-06 Thread Martin Andersen
After the last time, it didn't even recognise the CD anymore. It did
recognise a commercial audio CD. The CD had been previously verified. So
I restarted with an old DVD-ROM plugged in instead. 4th try, this time
with 810 packaged to get, failed too, again with a different error:

Could not install
'/cdrom//pool/main/r/rhythmbox/rhythmbox_0.10.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb'

short read in buffer_copy (backend dpkg-deb during
`./usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/iradio/libiradio.so')

Nothing of note in apt.log, and main.log reflects the above error.
I guess if I continue, I'll get it to install by attrition, chipping away a
package or two at a time.

[Bug 111031] Request: Include Wubi on LiveCD Windows apps

2007-04-29 Thread Martin Andersen
Public bug reported:

Although still Beta, it would be useful to include Wubi on the LiveCD as part
of the included Windows apps
http://cutlersoftware.com/ubuntusetup/wubi/en-US/index.html
Basically, it would give the curious the chance to try Ubuntu on their Win XP
machine longer than a mere LiveCD in a non-destructive way without
partitioning, allowing full customisation and native speed.
Some work would be needed to have it install from the LiveCD rather than
download, and to support Vista.
A page before the install icon should describe what it does and how to use it
in user-friendly terms and emphasising that it's a safe way to try out Ubuntu
without partitioning, but that if they like it, a proper install should be made.

[Bug 70227] installing lxdoom from Add/Remove doesn't install dependencies

When you install lxdoom from Add/Remove... and go to try it in Games,
nothing happens, because dependencies are not installed, namely the game
data (IWAD), the packages freedoom and doom-wad-shareware in the

files are required for it to function, else they should be installed as

[Bug 70228] GUI apps fail silently; no error dialog

2006-11-04 Thread Martin Andersen
Public bug reported:

When GUI applications fail, they do so silently with no explanation, leaving
the user clueless, or wondering if it is just taking a long time to load.
Users should not have to go into a terminal to get error messages. This is

[Bug 21412] Re: Default update-grub behaviour is not intuitive with respect to user modifications

2006-09-13 Thread Martin Andersen
Adding the Windows boot options before the Automagic lines results in
the Splashimage not appearing, so the bootlist really has to come after
all the options, so there is no proper way of reordering the bootlist

Confirmed here too with CRT monitor. Whether I set Gamma with xgamma in

in, it resets it to the default (1), even though xgamma still reflects
the values I set. If I open the nvidia control again, or retype the

[Bug 59895] Re: Updating Kernel modified Grub doesn't respect customised entries

2006-09-11 Thread Martin Andersen
Confirm that grub-update doesn't affect anything above
### BEGIN AUTOMAGIC KERNELS LIST
but that is not ideal, being before all the instructions and examples etc. In
bug #21412 it was suggested to have an include for the autogenerated output or
something similar, or even moving to Grub2 (don't know if it's stable yet or
its capability; Grub1 itself is no longer being developed).
As a workaround for me it's fine, provided its location before all other
options doesn't affect it. Ideally it should be smart enough to detect Ubuntu
kernels and only modify its entries. Even if you have a distinct Ubuntu section
like the automagic one, but more specific.
It is able to leave my Splashimage line alone in Dapper, which it didn't
previously, so it should be able to do the same for non-Ubuntu entries.

All this would be moot if there were a proper Graphical Grub editor,
which is a separate issue.

[Bug 59912] Graphical Grub editor (Boot Options config) needed

2006-09-11 Thread Martin Andersen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu/Debian needs a graphical Boot Options config panel under System -
Administration written in GTK+2 (or possibly something like wxPython, which I
understand would make it native to KDE as well).
It should be aimed at Grub2 and preferably introduced simultaneously (I don't
know when it will be ready). Ideally no-one should have to edit a menu.lst
manually ever.
It should have the capabilities that Grub2 has, like adding/editing entries (it
should be able to detect/confirm installed OSes and their location), setting
timeout, colours and Bootsplash (themeable), etc.

It should also be able to recover installed sytems from a LiveCD, ie you
can tell it to change root to a particular install and fix/install Grub
on the MBR.

[Bug 21412] Re: Default update-grub behaviour is not intuitive with respect to user modifications

2006-09-11 Thread Martin Andersen
To get Windows (or any other OS) to appear first in the list, it is necessary
to add it BEFORE the Automagic section, which is before all the Options and
example comments, which is less than ideal. It would be OK to have an Ubuntu
section with all its kernels, as long as you can add entries before and after
as needed/desired, without having to go above the options and comments section.
It is able to leave my Splashimage line alone in Dapper, which it didn't
previously, so it should be able to do the same for non-Ubuntu entries.

All this would be moot if there were a proper Graphical Grub editor,

[Bug 35354] Re: hal does not recognize NTFS-FUSE mounted devices as mounted

2006-08-06 Thread Martin Andersen
I just did an upgrade, and though I've now switched to experimenting with
ntfs-3g, the experimental driver which will be merged into ntfs-progs, the
problem is the same. What's interesting is, that once I restarted after the
upgrade (which included a new kernel), the HAL demon failed to start. All the
NTFS partitions showed up on the Deskop and in Places. But after trying sudo
dpkg --configure -a and restarting to get HAL working, the next time hald did
start and the NTFS partitions had disappeared from the Desktop and places.
Places-Computer shows them, but display the above symptom:
mount: according to mtab, /dev/hda8 is already mounted on /media/data2

mount failed
the partitions are indeed mounted and accessible, but Gnome/HALd doesn't know
it.
It is being discussed here:
