[Bug 442424] Re: cellphone recognizes paired Ubuntu computer as headset

2013-11-24 Thread Martin Emrich
This was four years ago... I no longer have this phone, and I did not
use Ubuntu on the desktop for some time now... So I cannot check whether
this bug is still valid.

Ciao

Martin

[Bug 465468] Re: bluetoothd dies with undefined symbol: sdp_uuid_cmp

2011-05-10 Thread Martin Emrich
Just had the same problem with natty amd64.

I fixed it by rebuilding bluez:

# apt-get build-dep bluez
# apt-get source bluez
# cd bluez-*
# fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us
# cd ..
dpkg -i *.deb

Interestingly, the installation complained that I downgraded from
1:4.39-0ubuntu2 zu 4.91-0ubuntu1. The epoch aside, this was a big
version leap (4.39 to 4.91).

So obviously I had installed 3rd-party packages before, which interfered
with natty's bluetooth packages.

[Bug 91389] Re: Support for more than one VPN simultaneously

2011-04-25 Thread Martin Emrich
I do not think begging or asking here has any siginificant effect.
Adding such a feature is surely more than a little bug fix, so it is not
beyond the focus of the Ubuntu team or Canonical, but rather that of
upstream.

By the way, VPN connectivity is not necessarily part of any desktop OS
besides GNU/Linux or *BSD, for most VPNs (OpenVPN, IPSec, Cisco
Anyconnect, Cisco VPN, Nortel, Contivity,...), users of closed-source
systems have to download and install 3rd-party software.

[Bug 630432] Re: cpuidle in linux-image-2.6.35-19-generic crashes kernel on boot

2010-09-08 Thread Martin Emrich
Hi!

I tested the upstream kernel (2.6.36-rc3). When I enable cpuidle, the
kernel freezes on boot without a message. When I disable it, the system
runs fine.

Same for the Ubuntu -generic kernel: 2.6.35-17 (with
CONFIG_INTEL_IDLE=m) boots fine, 2.6.35-19 (with CONFIG_INTEL_IDLE=y)
freezes on boot.

with INTEL_IDLE, the system freezes hard (not even the magic SysRq keys
work), so I cannot provide any logs. When I boot without quiet splash,
I also see no error message that could help.

If I can provide anything else that helps, just ask.

[Bug 630432] [NEW] cpuidle in linux-image-2.6.35-19-generic crashes kernel on boot

2010-09-04 Thread Martin Emrich
Public bug reported:

linux-image-2.6.35-19-generic fails to boot on my Lenovo Ideapad S10-3
(Intel Atom N450). linux-image-2.6.35-17-generic boots fine.

While trying out 2.6.36-rc3 from kernel.org, I noticed the same problem.
After just disabling cpuidle support in this kernel, it boots up fine. I
noticed that the most obvious difference between -17 and -19 is the
cpuidle driver.

Maybe blacklisting the Atom N450 or the N10 chipset in the cpuidle driver might
help for maverick.

[Bug 627889] [NEW] Asks for unexpected password when connecting to broadband

Public bug reported:

[Bug 623153] Re: Auto-hiding gnome panel does no appear when application is on fullscreen

2010-08-24 Thread Martin Emrich
My netbook has very little screen space (1024x600), so I have to make
use of every pixel. So I let my panel hide automatically (gives me ca.
24 pixel) and I use the fullscreen (F11) option e.g. of Firefox to get
rid of the title bar.

(Before you mention it: the nebook launcher currently seems to be broken
in maverick, and it also is not flexible enough for me)

I see your argument, I would distinguish between a make-maximal-use-of-
the-screen kind of fullscreen (e.g. Firefox, Terminator) and a
presentational fullscreen (OOo Impress presentation, video playback,
games).

The former should allow display of the panel, the latter should not.

A simple solution would be to add a checkbox to the panel properties,
whether to unhide the panel when the currently active application is in
fullscreen mode.

[Bug 623153] [NEW] Auto-hiding gnome panel does no appear when application is on fullscreen

2010-08-23 Thread Martin Emrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

I have set my Gnome panel to auto-hide. When the active application is
in fullscreen mode (e.g. Firefox or Terminator), moving the mouse cursor
to the screen edge does not show the gnome panel. I have to exit
fullscreen mode (F11) or switch to another application to access the
panel.

[Bug 598754] [NEW] Package jackd does not contain init script

Public bug reported:

I would like to configure jackd to run at system boot as root, but the

[Bug 538256] Re: Screen brightness not controllable on Lenovo Ideapad S10-3 and U350

2010-06-07 Thread Martin Emrich
Hi!

I don't yet feel ready to install the development version of Ubuntu on
my netbook (I usually do this ca. 2-3 months before release date).

The issue is still present in Lucid. I am currently running Kernel
2.6.34 directly from kernel.org (built using make-kpkg), and the xorg-
edgers X.Org packages, and I am still unable to control the brightness
using the hotkeys (the setpci command still works).

If someone could explain how the brightness changes are supposed to
happen (Which components are involved, e.g. Kernel/KMS, DDX, xorg-
server, ACPI stuff,...), I would be happy to dig a little deeper.

[Bug 583317] [NEW] genext2fs creates revision 0 filesystems instead of revision 1

2010-05-20 Thread Martin Emrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: genext2fs

I had a hard time finding out why extlinux (from the syslinux package)
did not like the images I generate with genext2fs. I finally found out
that genext2fs creates ext2 revision 0 filesystems (which seem to be
deprecated since Linux 1.2 or so).

The only way I found to upgrade the FS to revision 1 is to run
tune2fs -j image to add a journal, and then run fsck.ext3 -f
image to set the revision level.

The problem can be verified using tune2fs -l image, which prints out
the revision number.

2010-05-06 Thread Martin Emrich
By the way, I tried kernel 2.6.34-020634rc6-generic from kernel-ppa as
recommended somewhere in Bug #406515, but only the messages in the

be a different issue.

[Bug 131628] Re: black screen after resume from suspend to ram / disk

2010-04-30 Thread Martin Emrich
I just confirmed my assumption: I opened the display, but waited a
minute before pressing the power button. In the syslog (attached), I
noticed that the first entry today is from the time I pressed the button
(09:07:09), not from when I opened the lid. I don't know if it's normal
that all the suspend-related messages are logged only after resuming
fully.

The bug is still present in lucid. Is there a way to hack/patch the

produce keycodes, and the brightness can be set via setpci. What
component is usually responsible for brightness control
(kernel,ddx,acpid,...)?

I have this on my new Lenovo Ideapad S10-3: After resuming from suspend-
to-ram, the screen stays black (backlight off, too), only the power and
wifi LEDs turn on. Then, I have to hit the power button, then the
backlight goes on and after moving the mouse/pressing a key, the gnome-
screensaver unlock dialog appears.

I am running lucid i386 updated today.

[Bug 490274] [NEW] KMS crashes when Display settings is clicked in KDE System Settings

Public bug reported:

When I click on the Display settings in the KDE System Settings window,

reachable via SSH, and one can see a kernel oops.

When I add nomodeset to the kernel command line, the Display settings
work fine.

This is a duplicate of Bug #477134, but I could not motivate apport to
append the debug data to the existing bug.

[Bug 164819] Re: Can't Remove Scrollkeeper without trashing Gnome

2009-11-29 Thread Martin Emrich
On my karmic system, I could not find any cronjobs or large databases
related to librarian, so I do not consider it a problem. Scrollkeeper
ate my CPU once a week, but librarian/rarian-compat is well-behaved in
that matter so far.

[Bug 145377] Re: Powertop reports huge number of wakeups and drains battery

2009-11-29 Thread Martin Emrich
Yes, this is still an issue. I am running Karmic amd64 on a Thinkpad
X200, and had ca. 100-200 Rescheduling Interrupts wakeups per second.
After booting with acpi=noirq, these were reduced to ca. 10-20/s,
saving me another 0.5W of power consumption.

What negative side effects should I expect from acpi=noirq?

sounds like one of the previous Ubuntu versions' volume control
applications.

[Bug 485397] Re: External USB disk does not spin down after unmounting

2009-11-23 Thread Martin Emrich
Yes, right-click + safely remove spins down the disk (and removes it
from the list), clicking the Eject icon does not.

After clicking the Eject icon, the volume stays in the list.
Afterwards, I can still right-click to safely remove, which then spins
down the disk.

IMHO the best behaviour would be to spin down the disk when the last
partition gets unmounted, but to keep it in the list. If the user
decides to mount a partition afterwards, the disk could surely spin up
again.

But it is good to know how to spin it down in the meantime, thanks!

[Bug 485357] [NEW] Kernel oops in swapper with iwlagn

2009-11-19 Thread Martin Emrich
Public bug reported:

While copying a large file from the network to an USB hard disk, I
experienced this:

The computer did slow down more and more until X/Mouse/Keyboard froze
completely. As there was still disk activity both on the internal drive
(I did nothing on that) and the USB disk, I decided to let it continue.
And after a few minutes, the computer returned to life. In dmesg, I saw
multiple kernel oopses like this:

[Bug 485357] Re: Kernel oops in swapper with iwlagn

2009-11-19 Thread Martin Emrich
Note: The copy operation was from the wired network, wireless was just
on because NM does not turn it off when on a wired network. So the
wireless connection should have had almost no traffic for several hours
before the incident.

[Bug 485397] [NEW] External USB disk does not spin down after unmounting

2009-11-19 Thread Martin Emrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: devicekit-disks

I have a Western Digital MyPassport 2,5 USB Hard drive. On Windows and
MacOS X, the OS spins down the disk after unmounting/ejecting.

On Ubuntu (current Karmic amd64), the disk stays up after unmounting,
and does an emergency retract (The momentum of the spindle is fed back
into the voice coil to force the heads to the landing zone). This wears
off the mechanics much faster than a normal safe poweroff.

Ubuntu should issue something like hdparm -Y if a disk is prepared for
safe removal.

** Affects: devicekit-disks (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 284212] Re: VPN connection fails: unable to find valid VPN secrets (auth dialog crash when secrets exist)

2009-11-18 Thread Martin Emrich
@unggnu: I use the OpenVPN plugin on karmic i386 (including karmic-
proposed), and I still see the problem. I click on an OpenVPN
connection, and the notification immediately pops up with a message that
the vpn service could not be started.

Sometimes it helps to try again several times, or to try again after a
few minutes. Then the connection works fine. Smells like some race
condition or timeout.

[Bug 221009] Re: Firefox keeps forcing disk to spin up when browsing because its sqlite storage calls fsync() for every recorded entry

Marking this as affecting firefox-3.5, as I, too, see this on karmic

to confirmed right away.

[Bug 399436] Re: Error OAFIID:GNOME_TSClientApplet while adding the applet onto panel

2009-10-29 Thread Martin Emrich
Yes, I just upgraded my work laptop to 9.10, and it's still there,
making the tsclient applet basically useless. As it seems to be only a
typo in a patch, and AFAIK no packages depend on tsclient, would't this
be a candidate for a SRU?
