[Bug 1714794] [NEW] Smartd doesn't run other scripts after 10mail

2017-09-03 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

When I put any scripts under `/etc/smartmontools/run.d`, they're not executed.
This is valid also for the package `smart-notifier`, which in fact, doesn't
show anything on my system.

To reproduce:

- activate smartd test mode: `perl -i -pe 's/^(DEVICESCAN.*)/$1 -M test/'
/etc/smartd.conf`
- either install `smart-notifier`, or write any other simple script
- reboot and logon
- `smart-notifier` (or the simple script) won't have any effect; `sudo mail`
will show though, that a warning message has been sent.

This is caused by `/usr/share/smartmontools/smartd-runner`, but I don't
know how `run-parts` works exactly.

[Bug 1703424] [NEW] The clonezilla package is radically broken and should be removed

2017-07-10 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

The clonezilla package is radically broken and should be removed.

I've been trying to use the Clonezilla version distributed with Ubuntu
for at least the last 2 years, to backup disks, and it never
successfully backed up a disk.

Since the package is clearly unmaintained, and the maintainer, if there
is one, never even tried to run it, it should be removed from the
repository. There is no purpose for it other than wasting people's time.

In order to reproduce the issue(s), start Ubuntu from a USB and just try
to backup a disk.

Note that I've been a user, for the same amount of time, of the standard
Clonezilla version (ISO distribution), and it always worked, so I know
how to use the tool.

[Bug 1582213] Re: [xenial] Bluetooth device doesn't play any sound in A2DP mode unless set to HSP/HFP first

2017-06-21 Thread Mary Sherman
Is the package in xenial-proposed exactly the same as the one in `ppa
:ubuntu-audio-dev/pulse-testing` (based on the version, I'd say so)?

If so, then I've been using it for a few weeks now, and it fixed the
problem for me.

Solves the problem for me (ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/pulse-testing).

I can't comment on the reliability, since I've tested the procedure only
a few times, but I don't need anymore to perform the
disconnection/reconnection dance.

[Bug 1550704] Re: Type Cover (3) touchpad not working on Surface Pro 3

2017-04-26 Thread Mary Sherman
I've tried the 4.11 (rc8) mainline kernel, and the keyboard/touchpad
work out of the box.

Would be great to have it backported, but in absence of that, it's now
possible (although very awkard due to GUI issues, at least on XUbuntu)
to install [X]Ubuntu on an SP3, then install the 4.11 mainline kernel,
and have a usable machine (can't vouch for all the functionality, as I
use a very specific subset).

I think it's fair to give information about the status of the support
for this machine. Right now Ubuntu SP3 users are forced to use an
obsolete, custom kernel, and a bug report can be a good reference, for
people, to have a clear idea of the situation.

There's very likely a typo though - I think he's referring to the SP3.

Thanks. I've also just noticed (and it's worth pointing out) that Fedora
has out-of-the-box support as well, since v24.

Looks like Ubuntu SP3 support will have to wait, in best case until
17.10 (worst case, later versions), since 17.04 still supports it
insufficiently.

[Bug 1647359] Re: Can't copy address text in Thunar, using Ctrl+C

2016-12-05 Thread Mary Sherman
That would be a weirdly non-standard behavior.

It's standard that copy/paste operations act on selections operated by
the cursor.

Therefore if you for example select, with the mouse, "izza", and type
Ctrl+C, you would expect "izza" to be copied into the copy buffer, but
it isn't.

Even assuming that this crazy behavior would be appropriate, it still is
inconsistent with the mouse copy operation (and this can't be argued, as
it's a standard that both actions yield the same results):

- select a string (say, "izza") in the location bar, either with the mouse or
the cursor
- type Ctrl+C -> you get "file:///tmp/pizzas/margherita"
- right-click with the mouse and `copy` -> you get "izza"

[Bug 1637107] [NEW] Wrong audio profile (on a Skylake system), causing volume problems.

2016-10-27 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

I have a Skylake system (ASRock Z170 Gaming-ITX/ac) with (x)Ubuntu
16.04.

My speakers are connected via the SPDIF port, but there is a problem.

When I inspect the audio profile (in `pavucontrol`), I see that `Analog Stereo
Output (unplugged)` is selected.
The speakers play regularly, even if this profile is wrong, but the volume
doesn't work correctly - anything above mute will cause the speakers to play at
maximum volume.

If I choose the `Digital Stereo (IEC958)`, the speakers won't receive
any signal at all.

[Bug 1636471] [NEW] Clementine won't replace the current playlist when executing with `-l`

2016-10-25 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

The commandline parameter `-l` is supposed to load a playlist, replacing
the existing one.

Instead of replacing it though, it appends it.

Same problem here, and the "magic sequence" solves the issue as well.

I had a similar sequence as well (it was using "HSP/HFP" in place of
"off"), which stopped working today.

[Bug 1609900] [NEW] After QEMU execution with keyboard passthrough, key mappings are lost

2016-08-04 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

[I'm not sure against which package I can report this, so I've
preliminary done it against `qemu`]

Since I have a non-standard keyboard (a Kinesis, without Super key), I remapped
a key on my system (XUbuntu 16.04).
This is accomplished via:

~$ cat ~/.Xmodmap
keycode 108 = Super_L

This works fine, but after any qemu execution, with passthrough of my
USB keyboard, the mapping is lost - more precisely, the system it starts
behaving like the key is not mapped.

[Bug 1582213] Re: Bluetooth headset doesn't play any sound (regression)

2016-05-30 Thread Mary Sherman
OK, log is attached.

The operation, in detail is:

- I've started the (ad-hoc configured) pulseaudio
- Connected the headphones
- Opened a video in VLC
  - nothing from the HPs
  - opened pavucontrol
- the VLC output was set as HPs; under `Configuration`, the profile was
`A2DP Sink`
- Changed profile to `HSP/HFP`

The sound was now playing through the HPs.
In real world use case, I would switch again to A2DP, but it's irrelevant for
debugging (I assume everything works as expected the moment I switch profile).

** Description changed:

  I have a Sennheiser MM 450-X headset.

In 15.10, connection & playback was straightforward.

In 16.04, the headset connects, and shows up as default playback device
on `pavucontrol`, but there is no sound.

A functional workaround is to, after having connected it, to go the
`Configuration` tab, and in the `Profile` dropdown, to choose `...
HSP/HFP`, which will make them play as expected (but in low quality),
then switch to `... A2DP Sink` (they will play in high quality).

[Bug 1559315] [NEW] Glipper doesn't paste text in some conditions

2016-03-19 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

When I perform copy/paste (with Glipper active) under certain
conditions, I can't paste the text.

For example, if I open Libreoffice [spreadsheet] and Ctrl+C a cell, then
close the program, I can see that the text has been copied into Glipper,
but when I Ctrl+V into another program, nothing happens.

In addition to Libreoffice, the same things happens for the Network

Both:

$mpv --hwdec=vdpau --vo=vdpau
$mpv --hwdec=vdpau --vo=gl

yield blocky playback [on seeking], independently of libvdpau-va-gl
being installed or not.

Executing mpv without the parameters above yields artifacts-free
playback.

[Bug 1512080] [NEW] Thunar crashing when pasting files

2015-11-01 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

Sometimes, when I paste (from moving) files, thunar crashes immediately
after having pasted them.

I don't see any relation to the parameters of files being moved (eg.
size).

The effect is that shortly after pasting (Ctrl+V, or right mouse
click->Paste), the thunar window disappears, but I can observe from
inspecting the destination directory, that the files have been copied.

[Bug 1512081] [NEW] Network manager doesn't allow password storage of wifi networks with hidden SSID

2015-11-01 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

My home network has a hidden SSID, but the new (compared to 14.04)
network manager doesn't allow to store the password, so I have to enter
it every time I want to connect (this also applies to reconnections
after system wake-up, from standbys).

This is very annoying, and doesn't make much sense, as NM is remembering
the network (SSID) - it just doesn't store the password.

[Bug 1504982] [NEW] Video performance noticeably slow on AMD A10-7800 system

2015-10-11 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

I changed the CPU on my system, from an AMD A10-6800K to an AMD
A10-7800, and the video performance got noticeably slower.

When I use the Sublime text editor, now there are frequent and
significant slowdowns in the scrolling of open files.

If I change from the open source driver to the closed source one
(fglrx), the slowdowns disappear, and the performance is the same as
before I changed the CPU.

[Bug 1366951] Re: Bluetooth doesn't work on Gigabyte f2a88xn motherboard

2015-09-20 Thread Mary Sherman
** Description changed:

- Bluetooth doesn't work on Gigabyte f2a88xn motherboard.
+ Bluetooth doesn't work properly on Gigabyte F2A88XN motherboard.

- Generally it's not detected. In order to have it detected, one needs to
- boot into Windows, then on Ubuntu again.
+ The adapter is not always detected. When it's not, sometimes booting
+ into Windows, then on Ubuntu again, makes it work.

- Even when it's detected, it doesn't connect to the peripherals.
+ When it's detected, BT peripherals are regularly working (detection,
+ connection, etc.).

[Bug 1480902] [NEW] libpam-systemd ignores force-confdef and force-confold when configuring

[Bug 1479485] [NEW] Network manager doesn't work anymore with two VPNs

2015-07-29 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

[Bug 1464994] Re: Low audio volume on Thinkpad Helix

2015-07-11 Thread Mary Sherman
Can you give me more detailed instructions on how to do this (report
upstream, search in the registry)?

I've searched preamp and pre-amp in the windows registry, but
couldn't find anything.

I'm aware of the clipping cause - I was pointing that, given that the
volume is low, raising it above 100% (which causes clipping) is the only
way to have loud enough audio.

Thanks!

[Bug 1465002] [NEW] Network manager ignores the Automatic unlock for SIM cards

2015-06-14 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

I have a SIM card for the mobile broadband (the broadband card is built

if I specified Automatic unlock option, so that I have to type the

[Bug 1464994] [NEW] Low audio volume on Thinkpad Helix

2015-06-14 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

I have a Thinkpad Helix, which I dual boot with Windows 8.x and Ubuntu.

The audio volume in Ubuntu is low, compared to Windows, even when the
device output is set on 100%.

For example, when I watch something, on VLC, I can increase both the VLC
volume and the device output to more than 100%, say 130% each; in this
case, I reach a volume comparable to Windows, but in this case is
clipped.

Ah! You were right. That configuration file is very likely from the
previous Xubuntu installation (which was a 14.04).

I've deleted it, and re-set it again, and everything works as expected.

don't know if the problem is common, so that this is a general system
problem, or not.

[Bug 1410760] [NEW] Can't assign Ctrl+Fn as global hotkey

2015-01-14 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

(I don't know which package this error should be reported against).

I can regularly assign global hotkeys, except when they're composed as
Ctrl+Fn, in which case they don't work; more specifically, I can set
them, but when I type them, they don't have any effect.

[Bug 1315844] Re: won't start with compression on

Another common pattern of usage of the openssl compression, which is
quite important, is to compress network conections on cerntralized
logging setups based on syslog-ng and stunnel - which are now not
supported anymore.

[Bug 1361586] [NEW] trash-cli stores the trash files in the wrong location

2014-08-26 Thread Mary Sherman
Public bug reported:

when I trash files via trash-cli, on a mounted volume, the trash files
go to the wrong location, so that they're not found in the system trash.

for example, I have a volume called /media/myuser/myvolume, which maps

my home is under /home/myuser, whose root maps /dev/sda1.

when I trash files in myvolume, trash-cli creates

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 790015 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/790015
