[Bug 1589240] Re: Gnome on-screen keyboard doesn't appear when a text field is focused

2017-02-01 Thread Michael Flaig
Upgrade a Surface Pro 3 to 17.04, the issue remains. Gnome on-screen
keyboard does work in shell, but not with applications.

@Riccardo: Ubuntu with Unity does however come with onboard which is a
good on-screen keyboard. It does provide a good floating keyboard
experience with Gnome, too. However it does not work right with Wayland,
yet.

[Bug 1511743] Re: 15.10 server - no keyboard in installer

2015-10-30 Thread Michael Flaig
very funny ... not!

Anyway: After booting the installer: no keyboard. in Grub Keyboard
Disabling Legacy Keyboard Support didn't do anything.

However: Plugging in a very old USB 1.1 Keyboard works.
Looks to me like the installer is missing some drivers (again?). Maybe related
to #1244176 ?

I will see what I can find now that the other keyboard works...

[Bug 1505370] Re: Creating a bootable CD with Ubuntu 15.10 results in "Boot error" on all non-UEFI machines

2015-10-30 Thread Michael Flaig
Has to do with Fallback to legacy boot somehow.

I can now boot the installer from stick (created with startup disk
creator) on the tx1320m1 if I go to the BIOS and say override boot with
UEFI: - as I understand this enforces UEFI Boot and
skips probing. By default the machine seems to detect the usb stick and
probes it but legacy boot is tried first which results in the boot error
as it seems. HTH.

Fully confirming herewith what has been initially found by Larry.

On legacy BIOS machines, as already in the comments, dd might just be
your friend for a workaround.

[Bug 1303002] [NEW] [trusty] Swap partition not set up correctly

2014-04-05 Thread Michael Flaig

I think I found a bug with the creation of the swap, here is what I did

Installation went fine.

After reboot and logon I asked myself if SWAP was encrypted as I only
selected swap, after I found out that when I create a dmcrypt volume I
could not select a random key, which I would like to have for swap.

To my satisfaction crypttab was already set up!

[Bug 1303005] [NEW] Keyboard Layout switches back to EN indicator shows DE

2014-04-05 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

I just noticed that a bug I already have for some time now on my other
machne with 3.12 and on a virtual machine. Now it also happens to be
there with 3.10 in ubuntugnome trusty lts. Which is a fresh install and
therefore I am now reporting as it is most probably not a screwup by me
:)

My language is set to English but my keyboard layout is german (de)

After first login the keyboard indicator showed de as the keyboard
layout. When I opened a terminal and typed a dash on my keyboard a slash
was printed (which is what happens when selecting en as keyboard
layout). Keyboard layout still set to de according to the indicator in
gnome-shell.

This also happens from time to time on my other machines where I work. I have
yet to find out why or by what it is triggered.
Usually after starting a new application I notice. It also happens if de is the
only keyboard layout configured. And it is fixed by switching keyboard layouts-
which is why I keep EN as a keyboard layout in the list. The default is DE.

What can I do to provide more information?

[Bug 1303007] [NEW] [Wishlist] WWAN setup

2014-04-05 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

There is an option to set up WIFI with the current installer (trusty). It would
be nice to be able to set up WWAN as in 3G or LTE as well.
With ubuntugnome which I used to test the trusty installer I could quit the
installer and go to the shell start the WWAN and start the installer again, but
I would be more comfortable for the average user to also have this option in
the installer, like with WIFI.

[Bug 1303012] [NEW] btrfs: cannot choose subvolume layout

2014-04-05 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

btrfs support on the installer is not very advanced as I could see but the
default subvolume layout may need a bit more love.
Currently there is @ and @home, but it would make sense to create a few more
subvolumes by default like for /usr and /var for example. Even better would be
that one could choose the subvolume layout when selecting btrfs as the
filesystem for /

[Bug 1049513] [NEW] [quantal] Evolution account wizard not working for gmail (others?)

2012-09-12 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

gnome-online-accounts is configured for gmail, but no account visible in
evolution

wizard setup in evolution goes like
- Fill out Name and Email address, - Next
- All settings pre-filled, summary is shown with option to add calendar and
contacts - Finish

Result: No account created, no logs on console. No error in GUI.

Manual setup is not easily possible. Even giving a wrong email address
doesn't help to trick the wizard.. As soon as you enter some googlemail
account data at any point in the evolution wizard it does automatically
detect a google account and treats it as such.

Workaround:
The only way around is to create a totally wrong account with random
servernames.
Then finish the wizard. The random account is set up.
Then go back to settings. Edit the account to gmail servers and rename it and
so on.
Mail then works.
Contacts and calendar need separate setup of course if you do it this way.

In general I believe the gmail account should be there automatically
after setting up the gmail account through gnome-online-accounts.

[Bug 1040193] Re: Redundant ubuntu-online-accounts and gnome-online-accounts panels using a session other than Unity

2012-09-04 Thread Michael Flaig
Sabastien,

actually I don't see the ubuntu version of online-accounts to be
superior.

Gnome-online-accounts supports
- disabling features I don't want (i.e. choose to not have certain features -
google chat, or mail or documents or whatever)
- Exchange Support through evolution-ews
- Gnome Documents Support
- Enterprise Login
- Well designed user interface

How should this be handled? Feature request for Ubuntu's online-accounts?
I wouldn't like those features to just disappear

2012-08-09 Thread Michael Flaig
Happened after upgrade of gnome-bluetooth and related packages

Looking at the diff between 3.5.4 and 3.5.5
There have been Name changes from GnomeBluetoothApplet to GnomeBluetooth

Workaround:
Replacing /usr/share/gnome-shell/js/ui/status/bluetooth.js with the
bluetooth.js from the gnome-shell 3.5.5 tar.gz.

Gnome-shell starts but if bluetooth status works right i can't tell,

[Bug 774071] Re: Indicator-datetime-service renders 100% CPU usage

2011-09-15 Thread Michael Flaig
This problem is happening quite often so should be reproduce able.
I think Evolution calendar has something to do with the load. However evolution
needs not to be running. EDS would be enough.
Also I believe it to be related to dbus because I see my 2 cpu cores burned by
1 indicator-datetime process on one cpu and dbus-daemon on the other core.

I can confirm this as well.
To me it sometimes feel like there are ghost windows around when many windows
are open and I want to raise focus somewhere else appears a resize frame that
does not belong to any of the other open windows. very weird.

Thank you for the update.

The dependencies are not right for evolution on oneiric as it seems, because
during install dpkg gives the following feedback.

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 evolution-mapi : Depends: libevolution ( 3.1) but 3.1.5-0ubuntu2 is to be

[Bug 824890] Re: Dash much slower on my Intel graphics hardware with 'Active Blur' enabled

2011-08-13 Thread Michael Flaig
Same issue here with active blur enabled

Nvidia ION2 System.
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [ION] (rev a2)
Driver nvidia-current

Works fluid with static blur, but with active blur enabled I see some bad
performance.

i.E. moving windows is laggy. The windows follows the cursor with a high delay.
The new Window Switcher is also very slow and has a noticeable delay - with
static blur its better but still not comfortable BTW.

I am marking this Bug as invalid myself, because gnome-vfs is no longer used

Also I do not longer use the setup described so I cannot tell at the moment if
this is still a problem.

Keepalive could be a good hint though. Thanks to everyone who worked on

[Bug 569818] Re: massive memory leak, evolution-data-server

2011-07-25 Thread Michael Flaig
Looks pretty much like it is going to become a wontfix bug because the
bug at bugs.gnome.org is already marked obsolete and is therefore not
being worked on anymore.

Maybe someone wants to try it again with oneiric before it's stable or
even better before gnome 3.2 is released?

Reproduced it exactly as I wrote.

Click on sound indicator, try to move the volume slider, get dropped out
of the menu, click on sound indicator again and the UI should freeze
afterwards until unity-panel-service restarts. Music kept playing all
the time, so only unity/compiz froze.

[Bug 615859] Re: Select windows when the mouse moves over them is incompatible with global menu bar

2011-07-20 Thread Michael Flaig
As focus follow mouse is a advanced users feature I wonder why it is not
acceptable to live with using the keyboard to get to the menu? Pressing
Alt reveals the menu...

Maybe it would be enough to let the mouse jump as soon as one presses for
example alt+f?
Or Mouse jumping up to the first menu as long as you press alt? returns when
you click or release alt to previous position?

For me I am happy as it is. I do not use focus follows mouse since a
long while now but use the keyboard mostly anyway to not have to lift
the hand :) mouse jumping when alt pressed would be annoying for most
users - i think.

[Bug 740642] Re: exchange 2010 evolution-mapi - no folders or calendar, contact, tasks

2011-03-24 Thread Michael Flaig
After some searching the Web I get the feeling not many people using
evolution-mapi however that may just mean that it used to work right and
nobody has had issues :-) Currently all my machines are natty already
so I cannot test with maverick ATM. If someone else can please do so - I
am very busy next 2 weeks and can not invest much time.

I think this bug should at least be checked before the launch of natty
so we can be sure to have no regression here and make users with
corporate accounts unhappy - yes? Please help. Thanks a lot.

[Bug 740642] [NEW] exchange 2010 evolution-mapi - no folders or calendar, contact, tasks

2011-03-22 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution-mapi

This applies to current natty. I newly configured a Exchange Account in
Evolution but evolution-mapi seems to fail getting the folder list.
Furthermore it seems there is no calendar. the global addressbook
however is there and works.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-exchange/+bug/694884
may be related, although it refers to evolution-exchange. evolution-
exchange won't work with exchange 2010 imho due to dropped webdav
support in owa2010.

[Bug 706811] [NEW] unity dualscreen handling

2011-01-24 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: unity

Upgraded to natty for testing and filing bugs.

Unity Desktop does not seem to handle dual / multiscreen settings like
gnome did. With Gnome the Xinerama information is used and the second
monitor is used as an extended monitor. panels are not spread over both
screens. Not so with unity where the top panel spreads over both
monitors. This is with nvidia-current - haven't tried with different
driver. This is not desirable as having ubuntu menu and log off button
around 5000px away from each other sucks IMHO ;-)

System has a nvidia gtx 460 with two 30 screens attached.
Nvidia driver is special here, it does use TwinView and emulales xinerama
settings

Anyway problem does not exist with maximizing windows. They do only
maximize on the one monitor, not over both so I supposed the
xineramainfo config is in fact read...

Relevant Config Part is present:
   Option TwinViewXineramaInfoOrder DFP-0
see also on bottom

Haven't found any design guide that would cover how unity is supposed to
handle multi-screen systems, so this bug should also serve as a start
for thoughts an this topic.

There are basically a few scenarios that I can think of:
- Laptop + Projector (clone or extended? I prefer extended to be able to have
my notes on my main laptop screen. leaving the problem of seeing the slides as
well to the presentation application. Wtih extended desktops showing
applications (i.e. terminals is a a pain in the a** - i agree - maybe some
compiz hack can mirror single applications to extended screens? till then vnc?)

- Laptop + screen (usually extends the desktop - user should be able to
choose where to have panels and menu through primary screen... should
work with open source drivers out of the box - nvidia - problem)

- Desktop with 2 or more screens (Probably it would be best to have it
like before in gnome and macosx which however means that the global menu
is always an the main screen and may be far away. Otherwise one could
think of having unity on all screens (top panel) to hold the menubar
individually for each screen. But extended screens should not have the
indicators and probably not the task switcher (or should it?).

There is still potential for the ui designers and usability guys to
figure this out IMHO :)

Hopefully have addressed this right. Thanks in advance for looking into
this.

Here my relevant xorg snippet.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf:
Section Monitor
Identifier Monitor0
VendorName Unknown
ModelName Samsung SyncMaster
HorizSync 49.3 - 98.5

Device Device1
MonitorMonitor1
DefaultDepth24
Option TwinView 0
Option metamodes DFP-2: nvidia-auto-select +0+0
SubSection Display

EndSection

One more side note: Could someone push nvidia to support xrandr so we
can use the normal display settings instead of having to configure
manual xorg.conf with nvidia-settings (which bugs you most of the time
by having to restart X) ? ...

[Bug 568266] [NEW] Lucid Version of gq is unusable

2010-04-22 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gq

There seems to be something really wrong with gq package.
Currently Lucid has 1.3.4 which is a development release and totally unstable
(It segfaults when connecting, i.e.).

It would make sense to go back to latest 1.2.x series, or at least offer
the stable version in a seperate package

necessary.

[Bug 405077] [NEW] [Hewlett-Packard HP Compaq 2710p] late resume failure

2009-07-26 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

Apports reports resume failures, this is one of them.
Also suspend makes trouble. Display not shutting off for example

ProblemType: KernelOops
Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly. The resume processing hung very near the end and will have
appeared to have completed normally.

[Bug 399058] [NEW] X11/Shm/Xv + large video window results in crashes

2009-07-13 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

I just recently reinstalled my machine from scratch with jaunty and this
bug re-appeared (had seen it some releases ago, worked around it and
since upgraded to the next version). If I remember correctly - back then
I worked around the problem with gstreamer-gl which does not seem to be
in jaunty anymore. Where did it go?

Anyway I checked what happens if I use gstreamer-properties and played with the
Video Output Plugin.
- If X Window System (No XV) is selected I can stretch the Test Window to full
screen (maximize the window)
- If X Window System (X11/Shm/Xv) is selected gstreamer settings crashes with
the following error message
btw. it doesn't matter if I use NV17 Video Texture or NV05 Video Blitter as
the Device

--- snip ---
m...@titan:~$ gstreamer-properties
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'artsdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'esdsink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'glimagesink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'sdlvideosink'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'v4lmjpegsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'qcamsrc'
gstreamer-properties-Message: Skipping unavailable plugin 'esdmon'
The program 'gstreamer-properties' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 2200 error_code 11 request_code 133 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
--- snap ---

It seems to have to do with the width of the window and I found other
hints that people experience the problem with screen width over 2048

My screen resolution is 2560x1600 on a single monitor setup (30). The
point is that totem-xine and totem-gstreamer crash with the same error.
Also gnome-mplayer crashes. So I think it is not a problem with the
video players but in Xv.

My Hardware is a MacPro with Nvidia Graphics Card and 30 Cinema Display
OS is Jaunty (current) with nvidia drivers 180 and compiz enabled

Packages:
ii nvidia-glx-180 180.44-0ubuntu1
ii xserver-xorg 1:7.4~5ubuntu18

[Bug 341092] Re: [jaunty] compiz seems to ignore gtk_window_set_accept_focus(GTK_WINDOW(window), FALSE);

2009-04-01 Thread Michael Flaig
As the opencompositing guys didn't get the same effect I checked every
setting in ccsm again and by enabling the glib main loop support it
seems that the problem is now gone. I did this before but enabling glib
main loop actually needs a session restart to take effect.

I will close the bug report with this comment. Hopefully this report
helps others running in the same problem to solve it more quickly...

[Bug 181893] Re: Adding a certificate exception for non-trusted HTTPS sites is difficult

2009-03-30 Thread Michael Flaig
Bug still applies also to jaunty version 2.26.0-0ubuntu3 of epiphany.

IMHO there are only 2 ways out of this:
a) fix it in the deb package with a patch by the maintainer
b) close this bug as wontfix ( - it's what upstream did because of the change
to webkit in next release - hopefully)

[Bug 341092] [NEW] [jaunty] compiz seems to ignore gtk_window_set_accept_focus(GTK_WINDOW(window), FALSE);

2009-03-11 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

There seems to be a problem in compiz which affects at least cellwriter
(Package cellwriter)
Cellwriter inputs written text into the active window and therefore has to not
accept the focus.
  gtk_window_set_accept_focus(GTK_WINDOW(window), FALSE);

This works with metacity as expected. Cellwriter never gets the focus.

When switching desktop effects on it also works in this session, however
after logging in again it doesn't work right anymore. Compiz then seems
to ignore the setting above and gives cellwriter the focus. This is of
course bad because the input then can't go to the window it is supposed
to go.

There is already a Bug open for cellwriter, see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/333054 for details. But as you can read
there cellwriter can not do anything about not getting the focus then
set accept_focus to FALSE. Therefore I concur that the problem must be
located somewhere in compiz.

Short update: I forgot to mention that this worked with intrepid and
compiz before

[Bug 341101] [NEW] [jaunty] evolution calendar - new calendar with dash hangs up evolution

2009-03-11 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

A weird bug hit me when working around the problem that declined appointments
are still stored into the calendar. I have a Calendar Work and created a new
one Work-Declined where my declined appointments should go to, however after
creating Work-Declined Evolution hang itself when switching to the calendar.
evolution --force-shutdown helped.

I fixed it by deleting the new Calender Work-Declined using dates
application Package dates. Dates did let me view my appointments
without problems, therefore I think it is a Bug in evolution, not
evolution-data-server.

I couldn't reproduce it on my desktop system, only on my tabletpc.
Please try to force the same problem and if it happens to you as well
forward upstream, please. In case the problem is not reproduceable
please hold the bug - I probably need to clean up my evolution directory
then (Upgraded since hardy) and try again afterwards. Thanks.

2009-03-11 Thread Michael Flaig
I'm sorry, the bug is gone and I don't know what fixed it...
Just tried multiple calendars with dashes and space and so on.

This bug is either fixed by an update in dependency that has been
updated or murphy had something to do with it. I'll set it to fixed.

[Bug 314250] Re: Assistive techologies: password dialogs as normal window + onscreen keyboard

2009-02-27 Thread Michael Flaig
@Vadmin:
Of course it does, but it looks aweful see screenshot. Without this option you
cannot even enter a password because gksu blocks the whole screen, so the
onscreen keyboard as well.

But the real problem here is that gksu does not call the application
right if a onscreen keyboard is used for entering the password. The
called application just hangs and needs to be killed with xkill

If the application then is called again, no password dialog appears and
the application starts and works as expected. But it is really anoying
to start the application, xkill it and start it again every time. I'm
currently sticking to calling everything that needs root privileges in
the terminal with sudo which is almost as anoying on a tablet.

So it is high time this gets fixed...

@Gustavo:
I don't understand entirely what the problem has to do with keyboard grabbing,
because the password seems to be accepted right, but the application doesn't
get called right if the password is entered with an onscreen keyboard. Did you
try it out?

As Clarke mentioned the problem does only happen with compiz on and I
can confirm that. With metacity the gksu dialog looks like a gtk window
and not like on the screenshot - and it works right! I checked the
package source but couldn't find the compiz related code which makes the
dialog transparent - where is it done and how can it be undone?

Is it already too late for gksu-policykit to enter jaunty?
If so I would really appreaciate a workaround

[Bug 269377] Re: Make Policykit Match Gksu

2009-02-26 Thread Michael Flaig
As a tablet user I must say that policy kit is acutally a functional
upgrade

Please don't adept this ugly gksu behaviour. in a tablet pc you need to
enable window border for gksu in order to be able to insert the password
with an onscreen keyboard - which leads to problems and looks very ugly.

Please keep it as a normal gtk window and don't use this transparency
hack. If transparency is desired the theme engine should take care of
it!

[Bug 333043] [NEW] evolution(-data-server) hangs when creating appointments in calendar

2009-02-22 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

This is a bug that is annoying me since intrepid and is also there in
jaunty

I get hangs of evolution-data-server in 1 of 5 created appointsments or
meetings.

The dialog can be filled out, but when saving the button stays in pressed state
and evolution is not responding anymore.
The only way to get evolution to even restart again after killing it with xkill
is to do evolution --force-shutdown and start evolution again afterwards.

Apport is not seeing this hang because evo-data-server does not seem
to crash entirely. Please point me to instructions how to debug this. I
can reproduce this on 2 Machines. Both now on jaunty.

No, happens only with rhythmbox so far.

[Bug 314250] Re: Assistive techologies: password dialogs as normal window + onscreen keyboard

2009-02-22 Thread Michael Flaig
Please look into this - it is easily reproducable with an onscreen
keyboard like onboard. Happens with jaunty as well.

I really hope for this bug to be fixed before the release of jaunty. As
compiz is now default, Ubuntu is not usable on tablet pc's (slate) in
the standard configuration.

Also the dialog is pretty ugly see attached screenshot. In window mode
it should be a standard gtk dialog without transparency.

[Bug 332270] [NEW] [jaunty] doesn't boot anymore after udev upgrade

2009-02-20 Thread Michael Flaig
Public bug reported:

Since todays upgrade of udev jaunty is not able to boot anymore
affects also recovery mode, of course.

I can see messages like
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1f.1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda (9367)
/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1f.1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda2

/sys/devices/pci:00/:00:1f.1/host0/target0:0:0/0:0:0:0/block/sda/sda2

minutes or so and the number is counting up.

[Bug 55159] Re: usplash prevents passwords from being not echoed on the console

2009-02-18 Thread Michael Flaig
This bug is a security problem. pretty severe in my eyes. If for whatever
reason you get dropped to console after entering your harddisk password it is
readable on the screen. This can be triggered quite easily and needs a fix.
Still happens with jaunty!

If it is not fixable usplash needs to be disabled if harddisk encryption
(dm-crypt) is used.
