I've tried Live-CDs - kubuntu 6.10 - smartcard reader works - ubuntu 7.10 - no go. I've installed libusb-0.1-4, libusb-dev, libc6, libc6-i686, libc6-dev from Debian. Confimed here (with nvidia legacy) With nvidia-glx-legacy 71.86.04+2.6.24.9-8.22 - compiz is dead.
