[Bug 160999] Re: Apport doesn't overwrite existing core files

2020-02-18 Thread Michi Henning
And nearly 13 years later, we are still here.

If I have a core file in the Current directory and another run of the
program encounters a fault, the old core (possibly months old) prevents
the current core file from being written. Outstanding!

[Bug 1644669] Re: Uploader.close() fails if in Loading state

2017-04-10 Thread Michi Henning
The difficulty I see is that the underlying socket isn't connected until
we get the reply from the provider and we can set the socket fd.

I don't think it is possible to write to a QIODevice before it enters
the valid state. The doc says:

"Before accessing the device, open() must be called to set the correct
OpenMode (such as ReadOnly or ReadWrite)."

We don't call open(), but call setSocketDescriptor() instead (which is
the moral equivalent of open()).

Unless I'm misreading the doc, any writes to the socket will fail until
after it is connected, so we'd have to buffer up all the data that was
written, as well as queuing the close() call.

It seems it would be rather complex to provide this functionality. It's
also problematic to make it symmetric with downloads. There, I can't
call close() either before the socket is ready (for obvious reasons).

I have a sneaking suspicion that doing this may be a bit too clever? As
is, the rules are simple:

for both download and upload, wait until the socket is ready before you
do anything else with it.

[Bug 1677418] Re: TempfileUploadJob is not as helpful as it should be

2017-03-29 Thread Michi Henning
** Description changed:

  TempfileUploadJob as it stands still requires the provider implementer
  to do a fair bit of work, having to implemenent cancel() and finished(),
  checking that the size is correct and so on.

  It should be possible to give the implementer something that does the
  entire upload into a temp file and returns a future when that's done.
  With that, the implementer could just instantiate the temp file uploader
  and, once the file has been written, go ahead and start the upload to
  the cloud, without having to implement anything.
+
+ Doing this is probably quite easy; almost all of the implementation
+ exists already in the local provider.

[Bug 1677133] [NEW] Need to sanitize parameters on the server side

2017-03-29 Thread Michi Henning
Public bug reported:

We could be more thorough in santizing some of the input parameters that
the server-side runtime passes to the provider implementation. For
example, we could check the size parameter that is passed to
CreateFile() and Update() to make sure that it is non-negative and
return an error if not. This would relieve each provider implementation
from redundantly implementing the check.

There are probably other checks we could implement in the runtime, such
as that a name or id is non-empty, or that source and target for a move
or copy are not the same.

[Bug 1668872] [NEW] provider::Item should have its own header file

2017-02-28 Thread Michi Henning
Public bug reported:

Item is currently defined in ProviderBase.h:

namespace unity
{
namespace storage
{
namespace provider
{

...

struct UNITY_STORAGE_EXPORT Item
{
std::string item_id;
std::vector parent_ids;
std::string name;
std::string etag;
unity::storage::ItemType type;
std::map metadata;
};
...

And, in UploadJob.h, we have a forward declaration:

namespace unity
{
namespace storage
{
namespace provider
{

struct Item;
...

That's inconvenient if I want to implement an uploader in its own
compilation unit because I can't return a unique_ptr from finish()
without having the definition of Item available:

// LocalUploadJob.cpp

#include "LocalUploadJob.h"  // (which includes UploadJob.h)

using namespace unity::storage::provider;

boost::future LocalUploadJob::finish()  <=== Error here because
Item is not defined.

That's a bit inconvenient. I can fix it by including ProviderBase.h, but
I shouldn't have to drag that in just so the code will compile.

I think it would be better to have Item defined in its own header and to
include that header in both ProviderBase.h and UploadJob.h, so the
definition is always available.

[Bug 1664445] Re: No warning/error when removing dependency

I just noticed that I can also install thumbnailer without ubuntu-app-
platform being installed first. There is no error, even though there is
no way that thumbnailer will work that way.

It seems that installing a snap should automatically install all the
snaps it depends on. Without this, I only find out at run time when my
service fails to start that a dependency is missing.

[Bug 1664445] [NEW] No warning/error when removing dependency

2017-02-13 Thread Michi Henning
Public bug reported:

Our thumbnailer snap uses ubuntu-app-platform. With the thumbnailer snap
installed and connected, I can remove ubuntu-app-platform without any
problems whatsoever:

$ sudo snap remove ubuntu-app-platform
ubuntu-app-platform removed
$

That doesn't look like a good idea to me because I may not know that
there are other snaps that I have just broken by mistake.

I do find out that I've done something wrong once I try to run our
service:

$ thumbnailer.thumbnailer-service &
[2] 10587
michi@djembefola:~/src/thumbnailer/gstreamer-plugins$ You need to connect the
ubuntu-app-platform package with your application
to reuse shared assets, please run:
snap install ubuntu-app-platform
snap connect thumbnailer:platform ubuntu-app-platform:platform

[2]-  Exit 1  thumbnailer.thumbnailer-service

That's a nice error message, and it is very clear. But, unfortunately,
it's too late. I might remove a snap and then not find out for weeks
that I've broken something else...

I think I should get an error when I try to remove a snap that other
snaps depend on. Maybe, if I want to insist on breaking things, a
--force option could be used to let me live dangerously.

But, overall, I think it would be best to have something similar to apt,
which tells me that, if I want to remove X, it'll also remove Y, Z if
they depend on X.

[Bug 1660242] Re: Thumbnailer should be packaged as a snap

2017-01-29 Thread Michi Henning
> Thumbnailer sounds like something that should already be part of other
snaps, not something that is potentially stand-alone...?

If each snap includes its own thumbnailer, each snap will redundantly
store thumbnails (making the idea of a cache much less useful).
Moreover, all the databases for the thumbnails will eat disk space like
crazy.

I'm seeing the pselect error in the SF tests suite. From memory, it's
non-deterministic though.

I'm concerned about the sendWithReplyAsync() leak. That's a big leak,
and we are seeing this all over the place in storage framework. That one
really needs fixing.

[Bug 1649313] Re: Mediascanner is not working

2016-12-15 Thread Michi Henning
I downloaded the latest image from ubuntu-touch/staging/ubuntu

"OS Build Details" in system settings reports r85, 20161215

Unfortunately, I can't provide the output from system-image-cli because,
since flashing this image, USB is broken. I can no longer get my desktop
to recognize the USB port. It's as if the USB port is dead (lsusb
doesn't find the device). Developer mode is on, and when I plug my
Aquaris E5 into the same port using the same cable, it's recognized just
fine.

Anyway, after installing this image, the SD card is no longer recognized
at all, no matter how many times I insert it. (The same card works fine
in the E5.)

I guess the problem is with the image from ubuntu-touch/staging/ubuntu

I just tried with OTA-14, and it works fine there too. However, the
first time I inserted the card, it wasn't recognized. It was only after
I ejected and re-inserted it that it was mounted.

This may just be dodgy connectors in the card slot.

I'll also try with image you linked to.

[Bug 1649313] Re: Mediascanner is not working

It could be just that the card slot is dirty or some such. I would also
try a reboot. Possibly, some other low-level piece of machinery got
stuck. At any rate, I don't think this is a mediascanner problem. If the
card isn't mounted, mediascanner can't possibly see it.

[Bug 1649313] Re: Mediascanner is not working

2016-12-14 Thread Michi Henning
I tried it with build 191 from ubuntu-touch/rc-proposed/bq-aquaris-pd.en.
After inserting an SD card with a few music and image files, the music scope
shows the tracks, and gallery app shows all the images on the card.

I'm about to try with OTA 14. But I expect to see the same results.

Can you install the file manager app from the store and check if you can
see the card contents with that? If not, mediascanner is innocent; it
can't see the card if it isn't mounted.

[Bug 1645798] Re: No snaps appear in scope on Core 16

2016-12-14 Thread Michi Henning
It looks like click-scope is the only scope that is failing. Queries to
the music scope work just fine, as do queries to remote scopes (via
smartscopesproxy). All these scopes run the exact same code in the
runtime.

I have no idea what exactly is going wrong, but I strongly suspect that
it is in click scope or one of the dependencies it calls into.

Note that the messages about the closed socket may well be consequential
if a thread that wasn't created by the scopes run time throws. (If
click-scope uses QtDBus, possibly an exception could escape from one of
its threads? Or maybe net-cpp underneath or some such?)

It would be really useful to have some trace from click scope to see
what it is up to when it receives a query.

Also, it looks like I'm not getting any core dumps in the
unity8-session. Is there a way to enable those? It might give us a
chance at getting a stack trace from the click-scope.

[Bug 1645798] Re: No snaps appear in scope on Core 16

2016-12-13 Thread Michi Henning
I've spent pretty much all day trying to track this down. The debug
cycle time with core 16 in a VM doesn't help :-(

What I can see is that crap comes out of the ZmqReceiver when an object
adapter tries to dispatch an incoming request to the scope. The problem
doesn't manifest itself in the same way on each run. Sometimes, the read
from the socket returns zero bytes, which triggers the "socket was
closed" error.

Other times, the number of bytes read doesn't divide by the word size,
which triggers an "impossible message size" error.

Yet other times, things fall over in the ObjectAdapter::dispatch()
method when something throws during unmarshaling (presumably because the
data that was read is crap), which is reported as "error unmarshaling
request header".

It all points to some problem with zmq not respecting framing boundaries
or indicating that a socket has a message ready to read, but then
delivering incomplete or crap data.

I don't understand at this point why this happens with core 16 and not
on classic. The library versions for zmq match what I have on my
desktop.

I'll try this again tomorrow on classic and see whether I can figure out
what's going wrong by comparing trace.

@dobey: There is in the log: terminate called after throwing an instance

I don't know where this exception comes from. It would be great to find
out. I believe that, if an exception is thrown (no matter what kind of
exception) from one of the threads we send into the scope, the runtime
will handle it correctly. (If not, that's a bug in scopes-api.) But, if
the exception is thrown by a thread that wasn't created by the scopes
runtime, there is obviously nothing much we can do. (In that case, the
other errors are consequential errors, I'd say.)

@mterry: Yes, I did this in side the VM after starting the session.
There is no /run/user/0/dbus-session.

[Bug 1645798] Re: No snaps appear in scope on Core 16

2016-12-08 Thread Michi Henning
Michael, the command fails because /run/user/0/dbus-session doesn't exist.
I also looks like I have a different version installed. I see 264 and 277
(besides common) in /root/snap/unity8-session.

I adjusted your command to not set DBUS_SESSION_ADDRESS and explicitly
set LD_LIBRARY_PATH (without using snappyenv):

1_DEBUG=1 SNAP_USER_COMMON=/root/snap/unity8-session/common
SNAP_USER_DATA=/root/snap/unity8-session/277 SNAP_ARCH=amd64

This yields:

/var/crash doesn't exist on a snappy machine. I have no idea where core
dumps end up. It looks like core dumps are disabled. I can't find any
cores anywhere.

ubuntu-app-launch doesn't exist either.

I'm seeing an unhandled exception from the click scope.

Registry log: pastebin.ubuntu.com/23602020

I suspect that the exception isn't coming from one of the threads that
we hand to the scope. (We very carefully handle all exceptions that a
scope might throw.) It seems more likely that the exception comes from a
thread that wasn't created by the scopes run time.

The trail of exceptions from shutdown() is unsurprising because the
scopes runtime realises that something isn't right and just logs the
error.

unity8-dash log: pastebin.ubuntu.com/23602037

There is a line with "results invalidated". Not sure whether that is
significant.

Note that no network is present inside the core 16 VM. I don't know how
to get that working, and I don't know whether that relates to the crash.
I set up the VM following the instructions Kevin posted:

[Bug 1310186] Re: mediascanner prevents unmounting usb device

2016-12-08 Thread Michi Henning
There doesn't appear to be a way to be notified of unmount attempts at
the moment. There is an fschange modification about ten years ago
(http://stefan.buettcher.org/cs/fschange/), but that never made it into
the kernel.

It looks like it's impossible for mediascanner to automatically back off
when an unmount attempt is made.

You can kill the mediascanner process and then unmount. (Not of much
help to naive user, I admit.)

[Bug 1645798] Re: No snaps appear in scope on Core 16

2016-12-06 Thread Michi Henning
The assertion failure appears to be unrelated to the click scope not showing
any results.
What is interesting is that the other scopes seems to work fine, it's only the
click scope that is empty. With the missing applications dir in place, I'm not
seeing any errors at all in the logs, just the empty search results from the
click scope. This suggests that the scopes-api infrastructure is working and
the problem is somewhere in click scope or its dependencies.

I'll push a branch to have the registry create the applications dir if
it doesn't exist. That should be good enough for the moment. But the
whole .desktop file generation thing is a hack. As far as we can work
out, this was needed because online accounts refused to work unless
there was a .desktop file.

This won't run for me because I don't have /root/snappyenv. What's in

[Bug 1645798] Re: No snaps appear in scope on Core 16

2016-12-05 Thread Michi Henning
Looking at /root/snap/unity8-session/common/.cache/upstart/scope-
registry.log, there are lots of messages along the following lines:

scoperegistry: ignoring scope "clickscope": cannot create metadata:
unity::SyscallException: RegistryObject::create_desktop_file: unable to
create desktop file:
"/root/snap/unity8-session/common/.local/share/applications/clickscope.desktop"
(errno = 2)

The problem is that the applications subdirectory does not exist, but
scopes expect that directory to be pre-installed. In turn, failure to
create the desktop file causes the registry to not add metadata for
local scopes.

After creating the directory, the errors go away, and unity8-dash.log
looks clean. I'm seeing results from 7digital and amazon on a search
(albeit without thumbnails) once the applications directory exists,
which indicates that the scopes infrastructure is working.

[Bug 1643732] Re: service() method returns invalid service instance

2016-11-29 Thread Michi Henning
Sorry about the status change, that must have been a mouse click that
went astray :-(

You are correct in that applications won't get any oauth tokens or the
like. That's all handled by the storage framework. We pass the oauth
token into the *provider* implementation, so the provider can
authenticate with the cloud service; clients never come near the token.

You are right, the accounts are not going to get there by magic. Users
will still have to add a cloud account to online accounts as before. But
we need to allow the user to select which cloud service (and account
within that service) will be used by a particular application (such as
the camera app) to access/store content.

There are some design documents, but not anything that would be useful
here, it seems. Basically, we have a registry DBus service. The point of
that service is to deliver information about which accounts the user has
created within Online accounts. Our client-side runtime accesses the
registry (invisibly to the calling application code) to find out which
accounts exist and are potentially available as a storage service in the
cloud. (We will post-filter all the account info we get from online
accounts to show only accounts that actually represent a storage
provider.) We will show a selection dialog at some point via a trusted
helper or some such, where the user can select which cloud providers(s)
to use for application X. What we need to present in that list is:

- The translated name of the cloud service, such as "Google Drive" or
"China Mobile mCloud",

- the name of the icon for the service, so we can put up a pretty
picture on the screen,

- the dbus name of the provider that belongs to the account, so we know
which provider we need to talk to for that account.

- the displayName (which we get from online accounts already)

That tells the user: "the candidate storage provider you can select from
are:

- "Google Drive", , "michi.henn...@gmail.com"
- "Google Drive", , "michi.henn...@canonical.com"
- "Chine Mobile mCloud", , "michi.henn...@chinamobile.ch"

etc.

That's pretty much all we need for the moment.

Online accounts as it stands gives us all but the translated name, the
icon name, and the dbus name when we pass an empty application ID.

[Bug 1643732] Re: service() method returns invalid service instance

2016-11-29 Thread Michi Henning
Hi Alberto, thanks for the quick reply!

The user shouldn't see storage framework when they authorize things in
Online Accounts. The user doesn't even know what a storage service is.
Besides, storage framework will be used for lots more things than just
synchronisation. Eventually, for each individual application, the user
will be able to decide whether or not to use some cloud provider for
that application.

For example, I might decide to have the camera app store photos on
Dropbox, but have the music app use music in both Dropbox and Google
Drive.

What we *do* need to do is present the list of available storage
providers to the user, so we can create a selection dialog for the user
to decide which accounts(s) to store photos in, music in, etc.

We really need this list, and we really need to get at the dbus name,
icon name, and translated provider name, otherwise we can't present the
list to the user, and we don't know what dbus name to connect to.

Again, I don't see why the Accounts API provides me with the list of all
available accounts, but won't let me know these three things about each
account (while letting me know other things).

[Bug 1643732] Re: service() method returns invalid service instance

2016-11-29 Thread Michi Henning
We don't have an application ID because the request comes from the
registry, which acts on behalf of all sorts of applications.

I don't understand the need for an ID. Right now, the getAccounts()
method returns me the full list of accounts. I know that I have a
google-drive account, an mcloud account, etc. For each of these, I can
see the id, the display name, and the service ID. Yet, the API refuses
to let me see the string "Google Drive" and the icon name. Why?

All we need are three things:

- the translated provider name
- the icon name
- the dbus name

Why hide those from us?

[Bug 1644384] [NEW] mk-sbuild cannot build xenial or zesty chroot on trusty

2016-11-23 Thread Michi Henning
Public bug reported:

There is a previous bug for this: Bug #1569400

I just fell over this issue while configuring new slaves in our Jenkaas
setup. The problem is that the slaves still run trusty, and mk-sbuild
fails this

sudo cp /etc/localtime /etc/timezone "$MNT"/etc/

because both paths point at the same file.

Could we please SRU the fix for trusty as well?

sudo cp -P --remove-destination /etc/localtime /etc/timezone "$MNT"/etc/

2016-11-23 Thread Michi Henning
If you figure out how to fix this for Mir, I'd like know what you did.
The other avenue I tried was ExternalProject_Add, but I didn't get very
far with that either because it seems that the gtest cmake files don't
honour the INSTALL_DIR variable.

2016-11-23 Thread Michi Henning
The fix for cmake-extras allows the builds to complete, but it still
doesn't work. The problem now is that gtest install a pile of stuff in
the install directory and, when it comes to creating the packages, the
debian installation fails because of the --fail-missing; there are loads
of files in the install dir now that are not picked up by the .install
files. Sigh...

[Bug 1644062] [NEW] 1.8.0-2 breaks existing builds

2016-11-22 Thread Michi Henning
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to 1.8.0-2 (from 1.7.0-4), our previously-working builds
break:

CMake Error at /usr/src/googletest/googletest/cmake/internal_utils.cmake:149

set(old_cxx_flags ${CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS})
set(CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS "${CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS} -g -Wno-old-style-cast
-Wno-missing-field-initializers")
find_package(GMock)

This used to work fine, but no breaks on zesty.

[Bug 1638769] Re: Need more information from account manager

2016-11-21 Thread Michi Henning
Hmmm... This is not working for me. I have a Google Drive account
configured. When I call GetAccounts(), the account is returned. But the
account information I get doesn't include what we need.

We need the translated provider name (e.g. "Google Drive"), the icon
name, and the DBus name (e.g.
"com.canonical.StorageFramework.Provider.McloudProvider").

I can't get at this information through the methods provided by Account.
I had a look at the returned dictionary, but it only contains
authentication information.

How can I get at the three extra bits of info we need?

[Bug 1642150] [NEW] Timeout for online-accounts is unusably short

2016-11-15 Thread Michi Henning
Public bug reported:

The default timeout for the daemon is 5 seconds. That is way too short
to be useful. For example, if I want to talk to the daemon with d-feet,
before I can even navigate to an interface, let along invoke a method,
the daemon exits and d-feet closes the object pane.

Please make the default timeout something more reasonable. A minute
seems like a good value.

The code using leveldb has been stable for more than a year and works
perfectly on vivid, xenial, and zesty. With leveldb 1.18-5, I can run
the tests for days on end without any problems. The instant is install
1.19-2, I get segfaults.

[Bug 1640326] Re: FTBFS on zesty

2016-11-10 Thread Michi Henning
After lots of debugging and tracing, I found the root cause with
valgrind. The interesting thing is that this happens only in the silo.
When I run the same code on my zesty VM, everything is fine. So, what is
different in the silo builders from a vanilla zesty install? (Installed
zesty about two days ago. Is it possible that the builders are missing
some updates?)

Almost certainly not related. The test that triggers this is far away
from the core dump. Still worth following up on though.

I'm seeing this report from valgrind on zesty. On xenial, the test runs
clean. Not sure whether this might be related.

I think we can rule out leveldb. It's at revision 1.18-5 in both xenial

[Bug 1640326] Re: FTBFS on zesty

2016-11-09 Thread Michi Henning
Taglib fix is in the linked branch.

The thumbnailer test dumps core on all architectures on zesty. The fault
keeps moving around, looks like a race condition. We are not using
threads ourselves, so the problem likely is in a something we call into.
Candidates would be QT and (unlikely) leveldb.

I've run the tests for several hours continuously on my zesty amd64 VM,
without error. The fault shows up only in the silo.

For added amusement, the qml test for vivid arm64 is segfaulting. I have
no idea what might be causing this. The thumbnailer code has been stable
for many months and hasn't ever had this kind of problem.

I suspect that the issue is with something that is installed on the
builder. But there is no way to get a core dump when something fails in
a builder, so I don't know how to debug this. Without a core dump, we
are stabbing around in the dark :-(

[Bug 1640326] Re: FTBFS on zesty

2016-11-09 Thread Michi Henning
I have a fix for the taglib issue that does not require changes to
taglib. (taglib 1.11 added a new API for getting images out of
VorbisComments and broke the behavior (not API) of the existing one.)

Still looking at the other issues.
