Re: [Bug 252795] Re: pressing the Power button shows a logout dialog

2008-10-03 Thread Mike Rooney
Fair enough, I can understand the reasoning. It would be extra slick
if the Power Management option Ask me was then appropriately split
into two options, something roughly like Prompt me with power
options and Prompt me with session options, since I imagine some
people only used the power button to logout or lock and might prefer
this option. I understand the UI is frozen, but it might be something
to consider for Jaunty. If anyone agrees I can make a wishlist bug;
let me know.

[Bug 276014] Re: Copying and pasting IRC command from and then back to Pidgin doesn't execute command

2008-10-02 Thread Mike Rooney
I edited the description and am marking this as Fix Committed since this
is fixed in Pidgin 2.5 as Jonas verified which is Intrepid.

However Jonas please feel free to file your other issues as separate
bugs, and if you link to them here I will make sure to triage them
appropriately. Thanks again!

** Summary changed:

- IRC typed /msg copied /msg
+ Copying and pasting IRC command from and then back to Pidgin doesn't execute
command

** Description changed:

+ Normally you can type /msg and other commands into IRC-related Pidgin
+ conversations and have them execute. However this doesn't work if you
+ type the command in pidgin, cut/copy it, and then re-paste it.
+
  Binary package hint: pidgin

  1)
  Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
  Release: 8.04

  2)
  pidgin 1:2.4.1-lubuntu2.1
  pidgin-data 1:2.4.1-lubuntu2.1

  3)
I expected it to use the /msg command.

  4)
The text was sent to the channel and not as you would assume as a /msg
command but as plain text.
(My guess is that the / sent when copying is not the same char that is sent
when you type it in.)
(I tried copying from the text editor with the same result.)

[These are just my comments, I can't refrain from commenting when given the
chance.]
  * Copying is a lot faster, I would be most pleased to have the above function
working normally.
  * When downloading I liked the accept pop up, please do not change that.
  * When downloading I had to select where I wanted to save the file every
time, could you please make it possible to select a default saving folder.
  * I would like the possibility to open a server window without having to
connect to a chat.
  * Would it be possible to put the 6 tabs I get when I connect to an irc
server in one tab (and call that server window).
  * The users are colored in a variety of colors and some of those don't go
well on a white background. Could you please subtract like 20 to all the rgb
values to make all the colors darker and more visible.
  * How do I change the background color?
  * When someone connects it lists their address and this breaks one of the
human-computer interface rules, do not show the user things that only a
computer can read.
  * There are virtually no settings and that makes the application less
attractive.
  * An option to suppress quit and enter messages would be appreciated. It's a
lot easier to read without the unnecessary junk.
  * What is my quit message when I use Pidgin?
  * Most of the time a download bot only allows one download at a time. To come
around this problem the client could have a text editor where I copy and paste
the downloads I would like to make, then the client downloads the requests one
at a time. Another way to solve it would be to configure the bot in the bot
list to only allow one transfer at a time but you could still add new requests
but they are merely queued until the first download completes.
  * I have looked at the !list command and I'm amazed that I have to do all
this searching and stuff by hand when it is made to be read by a computer, why
do I have to read computer generated junk. I'm a nerd but I would rather not
read junk. (In 5 seconds you could build a search tree for all the contents of
a channel and then you could just click on the stuff you wanted and repeat the
procedure on the next channel, time is money.)
  * I like the stability of the program, it is rarely I see such stable
programs.

My brain is spent, I hope some of my suggestions make it into a new
  version.

  Best regards.

There's also a bug upstream about this at :
 http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=507393 , linking the report.

Thanks Pedro! But if the upstream bug is in gnome-session, is the
gnome-session (Ubuntu) aspect still Invalid (and is the g-p-m one
correct) as Hew swapped them?

[Bug 276887] [NEW] Input to TTYs goes to X after returning

2008-10-01 Thread Mike Rooney
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: xkeyboard-config

After using to a TTY and returning to X, some or all of the input
performed in the TTY gets sent to X.

Case 1:
1. Put your cursor over a non-maximized window.
2. Press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to TTY1.
3. Log-in.
4. Press Alt+F7 to return.

What happens:
1. At least in Compiz, the window is in Move mode, so mouse movement moves
the window. You must click to get out of this mode.
2. The help will be invoked of whatever application handled it, presumably
because you pressed F1 to use TTY1.

What should happen:
You should be return to X in the state you left it, and no input involved in
going to/from, or using the TTY, should later make it to X

Case 2:
1. Open a text editor.
2. Press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to go to TTY2
3. Type your username and press enter.
4. Press Alt+F7 to return.

What happens:
After clicking or otherwise exiting from move mode, the username is echoed in
the text editor.

What should happen:
See first case.

[Bug 42686] Re: audioscrobbler password saved configuration file

2008-09-29 Thread Mike Rooney
Alright, here is the patch I came up with (also sent upstream). It seems
to work in that new passwords are stored as md5 and existing plaintext
ones are converted, and tracks are successfully sent to last.fm.

Daniel, you seem to have some experience in this area, any hints for a
first time contributor? Should I attempt to get a PPA up to ease
testing? Or what is the next step?

** Attachment added: rhythmbox-md5passwd-2.patch

** Changed in: rhythmbox (Ubuntu)
   Status: In Progress = Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- audioscrobbler password saved configuration file
+ audioscrobbler password saved as plaintext in gconf

** Description changed:

When saving a password for audioscrobbler, it is saved in .gconf
  unencoded. It appears in

  /home/kevinly/.gconf/apps/rhythmbox/audioscrobbler/%gconf.xml

I realize that you should use different password for different websites,
but some may inadvertantly set the user's (and thus su) password for
  their audioscrobbler password.
+
+ A better option would be to store the md5 of the password instead since
+ that is all last.fm requires for authorization. An optimal solution may
+ be to use gnome-keyring instead of gconf.

[Bug 276014] Re: IRC typed /msg copied /msg

2008-09-29 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi Jonas, thanks for using Ubuntu and thanks for taking the time to file
this bug report! I am using Pidgin 2.5.0 (1:2.5.0-0ubuntu2~hardy1) in
Hardy and typing /msg will actually send a message to the person/channel
in the way you expected. I asked in #pidgin on Freenode and was told
that it always should have worked, though it may not have worked if
copy/pasted into the message box.

Had you copied and psated, or are you sure you didn't have a rogue space
before your forward slash, or some other typo that would cause it not to
work?

In regards to your other suggestions, thanks for compiling them, but bug
reports are meant for one issue at a time, otherwise developers will
have no way to keep track of progress and status of so many things
lumped together. In fact, some of them are just questions, which I would
redirect you to #pidgin on Freenode for, or using the Question tracker
on Launchpad. You may want to try installing pidgin-plugin-pack in
Ubuntu, as I suspect more than a few of those things are already
possible. I know for example hiding join/part messages and changing
conversation colors is possible with plugins. Regarding saying it has no
settings, if you go into Tools and then Preferences there are quite a
few settings, were you aware of those?

If you could, verify the issue remains in Pidgin 2.4 and then install
2.5 from backports (see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports) and see if the issue
goes away, and let us know.

Secondly, I would highly recommend taking some of the things from your
list you would consider actual bugs (such as it not remember the last
directory you chose, or being unable to change your quit message, et
cetera) and file them each as separate bugs, and then make a comment
here with the links to them. If you do that I will review them and push
them upstream if necessary.

Thanks again!

highly recommend that you send an email linking to it explaining your
intention for it, to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I think this can help you and Ubuntu
along! Just remember with free software, if you are having an issue,
you are the best person to put some work into it, instead of expecting
people less affected than you to care more about it :)

You also may want to check out Intrepid as someone else mentioned. If
some of your issues are solved there then the scope of the wiki page
might change. But still, I think you have a good idea and would
recommend going through with it, or at least emailing those two lists
together and asking for their suggestions on how to proceed.

[Bug 42686] Re: audioscrobbler password saved configuration file

2008-09-28 Thread Mike Rooney
Five chunks of the patch failed (it looks like there has been some
rework/updating in the plugin since this patch was made), so I had to do
some of it by hand, making a guess or two at behavior. I am going to try
compiling the new plugin and seeing if it works, and/or submitting it
upstream for a review.

[Bug 12682] Re: Dragging remote volumes to Trash should unmount them

2008-09-27 Thread Mike Rooney
This is actually explicitly against the Gnome HIG. From
http://library.gnome.org/devel/hig-book/stable/principles-match.html.en
:

When using metaphors, however, it is important to neither take the
metaphor too literally, nor to extend the metaphor beyond its reasonable
use. For example, the capacity of a file folder should not be limited to
the capacity of a physical file folder, which presumably could contain
only a few documents before becoming unwieldy. On the other hand, a
waste basket should not be used for anything other than holding
discarded files. It should not be used, for example, to eject a
removable disk such as a floppy or CD.

Also nautilus now has eject buttons on volumes starting in Intrepid so I
think this is arguably both deprecated and undesirable.

[Bug 267761] Re: Wireless on Atheros 5213A drops often, is slow, and ath5k_pci consumes large amounts of CPU

2008-09-27 Thread Mike Rooney
After updating today (the first time I updated in about a week) and
restarting, network-manager doesn't show any wireless networks at all
(and there are usually about 4-6 here). How interesting. I will try the
madwifi PPA later tonight.

[Bug 267761] Re: Wireless on Atheros 5212/5213 drops often, is slow, and ath5k_pci consumes large amounts of CPU

2008-09-23 Thread Mike Rooney
I am still experiencing this after upgrading to the Linux 27-4 packages;
is the PPA still useful for me to test?

My wireless seems to lag around 10-45kB whereas in Hardy on the same
network speeds are closer to 500kB, and I am still noticing periods of
ath5k_pci usage around 85% that make the computer unusable for a short
period of time.

[Bug 267761] Re: Wireless on Atheros 5213A drops often, is slow, and ath5k_pci consumes large amounts of CPU

2008-09-23 Thread Mike Rooney
** Summary changed:

- Wireless on Atheros 5212/5213 drops often, is slow, and ath5k_pci consumes
large amounts of CPU
+ Wireless on Atheros 5213A drops often, is slow, and ath5k_pci consumes large
amounts of CPU

** Description changed:

Using Intrepid Alpha 5 with an Atheros 5212/5213 (as identified by
Hardware Test / lspci) and connecting to a WPA 2 Personal wireless
network, the connection drops every 5-10 minutes, and when it is
connected, the connection is very slow (bitwise, typically 10-100x
slower than with Hardy). Often when reconnecting after dropping it will
ask for the WPA key again, which is already saved, and will work after
one or two times of just pressing Okay. The process ath5k_pci also
consumes around 40-85% CPU during the connection process and also
intermittently while the connection exists, making the computer unusable
during this time (mouse is not very responsive).

This card worked fine on Gutsy and Hardy and did not experience these
problems. This problem is easy to duplicate; I can boot into Hardy and
have fast and stable wireless, and then boot again into Intrepid and
have the experience described above on the same network. Note that I
  don't know that this issue is restricted to WPA 2 Personal networks;
that is just my home network that I have to test.

Strangely enough this bug existed in Alpha 4, and I say strangely
because that was Linux 2.6.26 which should have been using a different
driver. Originally after doing a fresh install of Alpha 5, I didn't
notice this bug, but now after a restart it seems to be back. I wonder
if it is possible that it is using the wrong (old, restricted) driver,
somehow? I have attached a screenshot of the Hardware Drivers
application, which seems to display conflicting messages in the title
  and body.

- Please let me know what further information is necessary.
+ Towards the bottom of dmesg (attached) there is all sorts of repetitive

Re: [Bug 263566] Re: Firefox 3: Edit Preferences Advanced Update options disabled

2008-09-20 Thread Mike Rooney
What is confusing is that the settings are set in one way, you change
them and it's no way to revert back...if it's difficult to remove them,
isn't it possible to at least have them disabled by default?

Can you clarify what can be changed and then later not changed back? I
am not aware of such an aspect. Can you change the Firefox update
setting at one point? Something like that could be considered a bug.

[Bug 269901] Re: one click on the places sidebar to show volume

2008-09-19 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi Jarlath! This bug was rated as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance, specifically the first and last
bullet points. While I understand your concern, the actual portion of
the Ubuntu community which actively develops is rather small and
limited, so issues like non-booting systems, program crashes, and
improper configurations are more deserving of higher priorities.

Regardless, this bug is an upstream bug in nautilus and the developers
there don't work based on Ubuntu's importance, they consider it within
the scope of their own project. However one of the core developers of
nautilus picked up on it and discovered the precise cause so I think we
are in good hands :)

Thanks for your input.

[Bug 263566] Re: Firefox 3: Edit Preferences Advanced Update options disabled

2008-09-19 Thread Mike Rooney
Hi clovepower, thanks for using Ubuntu and thanks for your bug report!
However, this is expected behavior. All Ubuntu updates are routed
through Ubuntu's own update manager, and for good reason. It isn't the
job of Firefox developers to ensure their updates don't break in Ubuntu
and in the case that they did and Firefox could update itself, our
entire userbase would suffer this failure. Updates are pushed out by
Ubuntu only after they have been tested, to ensure there is no breakage.
This paradigm is overall a huge win for Ubuntu users IMO, and something
important in the open-source world where developers aren't necessarily
writing code just for a particular OS.

It might be nice to not have these options at all but that would require
a non-trivial change to the Firefox package and require maintenance.

2008-09-13 Thread Mike Rooney
Yes, I'll mark as gnome-panel. I see what you mean partially, as the
application icons have a sort of fade to them which makes it harder to
spot them quickly.

However in general once you get used to a something you prefer more such

compositing in metacity?

[Bug 117578] Re: filename not changed to the standard when adding a song to ipod

2008-09-10 Thread Mike Rooney
Yes, this is a nasty one since files with fat32 chars can't be
transferred, and rhythmbox just gives a generic error not explaining
why. The files must then be manually renamed and transferred again.

At the very least rhythmbox should sanitize filenames by removing or
replacing such characters, otherwise it can lead to an incredibly
confusing and frustrating user experience. Many users with large
libraries are bound to have a few of these characters such as a quote or
colon. Perhaps this deserves a separate bug specific just to
sanitization, as a new naming scheme isn't necessarily required?

[Bug 231130] Re: simple-ubuntu.png is really elephant-skin.jpg and is toooo big (was converted from jpg to png)

2008-09-10 Thread Mike Rooney
Okay, I can confirm that simple-ubuntu.png is the elephant wallpaper and
that it is 2.6MB while the two others are around 350-500KB. It doesn't
seem to compress so I assume this could save 2MB on the livecd as well,
though I may be wrong.

Is there any reason the original JPG can't be used? Or could the
original author export directly to PNG to prevent this lossless encoding
of a lossy format?

[Bug 268800] Re: Kubuntu Intrepid, kmenuedit has duplicate entries

2008-09-10 Thread Mike Rooney
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better! This bug did not have a package associated with it, which
is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper
developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this
bug as a bug in kdebase-workspace-bin (which I believe to be correct but
am not certain due to the KDE renaming scheme).

For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of
applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can
be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the
application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about
this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 267761] [NEW] Wireless on Atheros 5212/5213 drops often, is slow, and ath5k_pci consumes large amounts of CPU

2008-09-08 Thread Mike Rooney
Public bug reported:

Note that I
don't know that this issue is restricted to WPA 2 Personal networks;
that is just my home network that I have to test.

Strangely enough this bug existed in Alpha 4, and I say strangely
because that was Linux 2.6.26 which should have been using a different
driver. Originally after doing a fresh install of Alpha 5, I didn't
notice this bug, but now after a restart it seems to be back. I wonder
if it is possible that it is using the wrong (old, restricted) driver,
somehow? I have attached a screenshot of the Hardware Drivers
application, which seems to display conflicting messages in the title
and body.

Please let me know what further information is necessary.

same bug? Perhaps just as one Import Keys option, maybe containing a
sublist for key types found.

[Bug 220064] Re: Migration Assistant does not migrate firefox bookmarks

2008-08-20 Thread Mike Rooney
Potentially useful input from Prodoc in a duplicate: During the
installation of Ubuntu I got presented with the wonderful option to
import the Firefox stuff from the existing Windows XP installation.
After everything was completed and I was ready to use Firefox in Ubuntu,
nothing was imported at all. No bookmarks, no saved passwords, nothing.
Shouldn't this have been the case? Is there an option to import the
stuff again?

[Bug 220064] Re: Migration Assistant does not migrate firefox bookmarks

2008-08-20 Thread Mike Rooney
While this and the duplicates seem to be regarding XP migrations, I want
to add that I can confirm this with Intrepid Alpha 4, attempting to
migrate Firefox settings from Hardy 8.04.1. Nothing was imported as far
as I can tell. So this may be a generic Firefox migration issue and not
something specific to Windows. It also doesn't seem to be specific to
Firefox 2 or 3.

[Bug 243682] Re: [Intrepid] Usplash Screen Corruption

2008-08-20 Thread Mike Rooney
Now that bug 243682 is separated, I think this description needs some
cleanup to be more specific to just the red/white lines corruption and
not talk about the progress bar issue, as that is likely to confuse
people finding/following this bug report. The startup video probably
belongs in the other report.

I also wanted to confirm that both of these issues affect me, seemingly
random which one, at startup; shutdowns have not been affected as far as
I have noticed, though my experiments were far from scientific.

Re: [Bug 253405] Re: Bad quality of a png image when smooth images when zoom is active

2008-08-17 Thread Mike Rooney
So this is an hardware problem?

Not really, not with your specific hardware anyway, it is just How It
Works. I would recommend
http://webdesign.about.com/cs/antialiasing/a/aa051898.htm for a quick
read which might clear up any questions you have. Images on your
screen are made up of pixels, which are of a set size. Anti-aliasing
tries to work around this but a trade-off is that the image can become
blurred. You can't have smooth and sharp at the same time,
unfortunately. Also try
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ClearType#How_ClearType_works for more
interesting related information.

Re: [Bug 257901] Re: Suggestion: GUI frontend(s) for ecryptfs-utils

2008-08-16 Thread Mike Rooney
I agree about the use of mounting and unmounting being too technical
 for this application.

Yes, I must admit I too feel this way. Though we don't want to be
inaccurate in a way that confuses more knowledgable users, although I
am not convinced the current terminology of encrypt/decrypt does, so
we may be okay.

Of course this then raises the question of how to open such an options
screen - adding another button to the primary UI kind of defeats the
purpose. I would suggest a menu bar, with nothing more than FileQuit
 and EditPreferences on it. Thoughts?

Probably just make it tabbed and have a second tab for the
checkboxes/persistent options.

Re: [Bug 257901] Re: Suggestion: GUI frontend(s) for ecryptfs-utils

2008-08-16 Thread Mike Rooney
 Actually, strike this

I have talked to the upstream ecryptfs-utils maintainers and they are
quite willing an interested to integrate GUI into the main
 ecryptfs-utils project.

Hmm, well that is good in ways, but doesn't that change the scope of
this then? My idea was to have a simple GUI tailored to Intrepid's
implementation, that is, an encrypted ~/Private. If upstream wants a
GUI, I assume it would be completely different. What would a GUI look
like that is useful to ecryptfs-utils generically but also good for
Intrepid users? Maybe I am just confused... :)

Re: [Bug 253405] Re: Bad quality of a png image when smooth images when zoom is active

2008-08-16 Thread Mike Rooney
In my mind, the text of smooth.png image is fuzziness and the text of
 nosmooth.png picture is not.

Yes, it is going to be a bit fuzzy depending on size and potentially
subpixel hinting (you may want to play around with that on your
system). The whole point of smoothing is to unsharpen, it is a
trade-off, especially for a line with such a small width. Pixels are
only so small; it is a technological limitation of monitors. Maybe
some day we will have true floating point monitors.
