Re: [Bug 1904632] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Azure VM host kernel panic

2020-12-16 Thread Kaveh Moe
Yes, I am clear on this Dexuan. Had found the same info tonight,
including the table of causes of VM exit. The issue is not the VM exit
itself, it is that hyperv adversely affects the 32 bit programs state.
Please keep posting the progress on fixing the issue if you could as
this goes along.

Regards,K.

Thanks Dexuan. I realized later and clarified my Q on the thread,
suggesting the experiment I mentioned. I have not tried it, but anyway
you guys are now zeroing in on the issue.

VM Exit is a term in the Intel CPU's Virtualization support (VMX). It
means the execution of the guest CPU is interrupted and the execution
"jumps" to some function in the hypervisor; the hypervisor analyzes the
reason of the VM Exit, and handles the VM exit properly, and then the
execution "jumps" back to wherever the guest CPU was interrupted. Here
the issue is: when the Level-2 guest CPU's VM Exit happens, somehow the
hypervisor messes up the Level-1 guest's 32-bit related state (i.e. the
SYSENTER instruction related state), so later when the 32-bit progarm
starts to run, the Level-1 guest kernel crashes due to double-fault. The
investigation is still ongoing.

Re: [Bug 1904632] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Azure VM host kernel panic

2020-12-16 Thread Kaveh Moe
Hi Dexuan,

To clarify my question: What is the cause of the VMexit (ie. trap to the
hyperv) in this scenario?

It might be worth it to do an experiment and reverse the order of
operations i.e. first start the hello program in a loop and THEN start
the nested VM via KVM. Then it would be the nested KVM operation causing
an expected VMexit which is not handled properly due to the running 32
bit program.

Regards,K.

[Bug 1904632] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Azure VM host kernel panic

2020-12-14 Thread Kaveh Moe
Hi Marcelo,
This issue can also been seen on the latest Ubuntu 18.04 image. It is also seen
in the 5.10-rc7 Linux kernel as well as 5.4.

The issue can be reproduced 100% of the time using a more simple setup as
described below. A basic "hello world" C program compiled for 32 bit crashes
the Azure Linux host if a standard VM is first started as described below using
qemu-kvm.
// the Azure host kernel panic reproduction with 32 bit hello world. Includes
the kernel panic traceback at the end.
// Install a standard ubuntu image on the host like below (if the 11/25/20 is
no longer available, the current one will do).

[Bug 1904632] [NEW] Ubuntu 18.04 Azure VM host kernel panic

2020-11-17 Thread Kaveh Moe
Public bug reported:

Running a container on an DV3 Standard_D8_v3 Azure host, as the
container comes up, the Azure host VM kernel panics per the logs below.

Isolated the issue to a process in the container which uses the virtual
NICs available on the Azure host. The container also is running Ubuntu
18.04 based packages. The problem happens every single time the
container is started, unless its NIC access process is not started.

Has this sort of kernel panic on Azure been seen and what is the root
cause and remedy please.

Also the kernel logs on the Azure host show it vulnerable to the
following CVE. There are other VMs and containers that can run on the
Azure host without a kernel panic on it, but providing this info in case
there is some tie-in to the panic.

https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2018-3646

[Bug 1464321] Re: No sound output through docking station headphones jack for Dell Latitude E5450

2019-06-22 Thread Moe Zarella
Larry's solution works, but the downside is the laptop's internal
headphone/mic jacks and speaker is still muted when you undock it,
unless you switch back to Analog Stereo duplex manually. This was tested
with xubuntu 16.04 (x86) on a Dell D620 (Sigmatel Audio). Has anyone
found a solution to let the laptop switch between outputs automatically?
It even works with Win XP...

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1779827] Re: failure to boot with linux-image-4.15.0-24-generic

2018-07-24 Thread moe
@Joseph Salisbury: I am confused. Looking at USN-3718-1
(https://usn.ubuntu.com/3718-1/) and USN-3718-2
(https://usn.ubuntu.com/3718-2/) it seems like CVE-1108 is fixed in
Ubuntu 18.04 LTS for several linux kernel flavors (azure, gcp, hwe, kvm,
oem and stock) and a subset for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

However the table at https://people.canonical.com/~kernel/cve/pkg/ALL-
linux.html states 'pending applied'. The table
https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-
security/cve/2018/CVE-2018-1108.html states 'pending' and so on.

So my question is: is CVE-2018-1108 fixed in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and 16.04
LTS? And if so since which kernel version? Did the new kernel that led
to this bugreport fix the vulnerability. Did the fix you developed
reintroduce the vulnerability?

Regards and thank you for your efforts!

[Bug 1001579] Re: Incorrect file transfer progress bar

2017-09-12 Thread moe
Same problem here on Lubuntu and Xubuntu 16.04.
This needs to be taken more seriously, I've had this problem for years and like
someone said before, it should be a basic functionality.
I've lost a few files because of this.

[Bug 1335642] Re: mdadm runs into infinite loop and prevents initrd/initramfs phase to finish on boot

2016-03-30 Thread Moe
Hi,

as I see it, #1334699 is the bug producing the symptoms described in the
initial post. Because of that, the fixes seem somewhat arbitrary (due to
many causes showing the same symptoms). Nastily hides true problems.

In my case, the underlying issue also was that a device could not be
found (see https://serverfault.com/a/594833).

/boot/grub/grub.cfg showed in the cmdline root=/dev/md0p2 (the system
was set up in a live environment where in a script /dev/md0 was hard-
coded as raid device). Removing the quiet parameter allowed to glance
mentions of md127 prior to entering the infinite loop.

After changing that to the proper form of root=/dev/disk/by-id/yadda-
yadda, the system came up just fine. Is there an issue for trying to
reliably set the root parameter? I would expected it to be most useful
to always use UUIDs here.

PS: WTF. Tentative first post. Was unable to find any info on community
rules, best practices, etc. Hope this comment helps someone out there.

[Bug 1003309] Re: Boot fails after installing updates, error: “cryptsetup: evms_activate is not available

2012-06-22 Thread Jørn Moe
Hi, I have the same problem.

I found a temporary workaround:

at the initramfs prompt i type:

cryptsetup luksOpen /dev/sda5 VG Name

Then I'm asked for the key. After entering the corrct key I type exit
After that I ame asked for key three times again (*) before boot continues into
a fully working system with all encrypted partions mounted.

I would however like to fix this as it is annoying and takes several
minutes extra to boot every time. I suspect that somewhere there is a
missing or wrong configuration which result in the initramfs is not
buildt with correct modules.

My problem actually started when upgrading from 10.04 to 11.04. Several
upgrades later the problem is still the same. Now running on latest
build of 12.04 (LTS).

(*) just pressing enter each time works just fine as I get errors even
if i type the correct key. I have no idea why it asks for keys at this
stage as the encrypted partitions already are mounted... I think...:)

Problem persists even in daily build (using current), see attachment.
The next steps are alle using English, and not local language strings.

Ubiquity started as requested, but nothing happens when running the
'apport-collect' command. Should Ubiquity be exited before running
apport-collect?

Great. I added two more screenshots, as the faulty strings affected
other windows too - I don't know if you enabled specific strings or made
a complete update.

Also, the translation web site claims that both debian-installer and
uiquity-debconf have 'changed' translations. These updates were made a
long time ago, and I just want to make sure that also these are included
in the upcoming release. I would have expected that no changed
translations were visible prior to the release.

[Bug 652395] [NEW] Maverick RC, several wrong language strings

2010-09-30 Thread Kjetil Birkeland Moe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

As for the beta, the ubiquity installer does not provide translated
language strings for several of the most important installer steps.
Strings are missing and/or not updated from launchpad contributions,
though most of the strings were updated over a week ago. This is a
concern at least for Norsk (Bokmål) language, other languages not
checked.

For the first installer step, only 2 out of 9 strings are displayed in
correct language.

[Bug 384926] Re: slurm-llnl cannot execve scripts

2009-08-18 Thread moe jette
This problem is fixed in Slurm version 2.0.4 or you can apply the patch below.
The problem is caused by the sbatch command reading input from stdin and
failing to NULL terminate the argv argument to the execve() function. As a
work-around you can supply a batch script file as an argument to sbatch
rather than as stdin (e.g. sbatch my.script). Here's the patch:

[Bug 278471] Re: Screen flickers or blanks every 10 s with KDE4

2009-01-01 Thread Moe
Kde 4.1 I think this is a driver problem, so try this:
ApplicationsSystemHardware drivers; a hardware drivers window should
now appear. If one or more accelerated graphics drivers, which have not
been activated, appear, then activate the only one or the recommended
one. You need this driver for desktop effects. This should get rid of
the flicker.

[Bug 308002] [NEW] Prevent jack-applications from hanging when one of the connected applications crashes

2008-12-14 Thread Moe
Public bug reported:

Would it be possible for you to integrate some sort of exception
handling or security check into the flow of audio data in jack to
prevent jack-related applications from hanging when one of it's
(connected) applications is closed or crashes. For example if I connect
my mplayer to an equalizer app and the eq to the system speakers, i
cannot close the equalizer without mplayer hangs. Wouldn't it be nice if
jack simply reroutes the data to some null device until a new
application is conntected to it?

[Bug 299938] [NEW] Stopmotion fails to import images in alphabetical order

2008-11-19 Thread Moe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: stopmotion

1. When you select multiple files in the Add Files Dialog (by selecting the
first one, holding Shift and selecting the last one), the image names are added
in a order which i don't understand but which surely is not alphabetical or at
least in the order I selected it. So when I select images named 0001.jpg to
0010.jpg, the order the names appear in in the File name Textfield is
always, independent of the order I select the image files:
0008.jpg 0002.jpg 0005.jpg 0006.jpg 0007.jpg 0004.jpg 0010.jpg
0003.jpg 0009.jpg 0001.jpg

2.The images are imported in a random, changing order. I imported ten
Images three times and I got a different, random order every time

[Bug 298419] [NEW] winrules: Rule No Focus (no_focus_match) fails on shaded Windows

2008-11-15 Thread Moe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz-fusion-plugins-main

Easily Reproducable:
- set a No-Focus-Winrule
- move the window on which the rule applies
- the Focus remains on the previously focused window
- Set the Window to shaded state (Double-click on title-Bar by default?)
- the Window reduces itself to its title bar
- move the title bar
- the set rule seems to apply no longer, the shaded Window gains the focus

[Bug 271518] Re: slurm sbatch command fails

2008-10-14 Thread moe jette
The file is always created to have read/execute permission for the owner.
Here is an excerpt of the code from
_make_batch_script(batch_job_launch_msg_t *msg, char *path)
in src/slurmd/slurmstepd/mgr.c:

if (chown(script, (uid_t) msg-uid, (gid_t) -1)  0) {
error(chown(%s): %m, path);
goto error;
}

if (chmod(script, 0500)  0) {
error(chmod: %m);
}

Is your slurmd daemon running as user root or the person running the job?
Are your uid numbers consistent across the cluster?
Take a look in the slurmd log file (located at
scontrol show config | grep SlurmdLog).
