[Bug 1432194] Re: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500

2015-05-07 Thread Moritz Reiter
I have to agree with Bernd and John. The problems I'm experiencing to my
understanding match the description of this report and the many
screenshots people attached here perfectly. And they persist with the
most current packages in the official repositories. It may be due to a
lack of technical understanding on my side, but I don't understand how
this issue could be regarded as resolved.

People already reported that the rendering and font issues don't occur
in 15.04. But I'm using LTS for a reason. And it's not like Intel's HD
5500 would be some obscure, negligible piece of hardware.

But if for whatever reason this issue should not be regarded as
important enough to get further investigation, it would be nice to know,
just to make an informed decision. Because in that case I would probably
prefer switching to 15.04.

[Bug 1432194] Re: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500

2015-05-07 Thread Moritz Reiter
Had time to experiment a little bit more. Turns out I can now only
reproduce the rendering and font issues when the T450s is attached to
the Ultra Dock docking station (which is how I most of the time use it).

When I remove the laptop from the Ultra Dock and reboot, everything
seems fine. As soon as I attach it to the Dock again, rendering and font
errors start to occur and seem to gradually get worse the longer I keep
closing and opening apps.

When booting with the laptop attached to the Dock it's worst and the
system is utterly unusable right from the start.

[Bug 1449401] Re: After 14.10 updates to kernel 3.16.0-36, system is not booting, resulting in black screen due to NULL pointer in intel_ring_init_seqno

2015-05-06 Thread Moritz Reiter
I have to correct my last comment:

3.16.0-37.51 does boot.

I had to install the linux-image-extra package, too, which I didn't in
the first try.

[Bug 1449401] Re: After 14.10 updates to kernel 3.16.0-36, system is not booting, resulting in black screen due to NULL pointer in intel_ring_init_seqno

2015-05-06 Thread Moritz Reiter
Thanks for the hint, Timo!

3.16.0-37.51 also doesn't boot on my T450s.

Boot process gets stuck displaying:

Loading Linux 3.16.0-37-generic
Loading initial ramdisk

I installed the .deb from the link you provided, Timo, and aptitude
tells me the -51 version is installed:

$ sudo aptitude show linux-image-3.16.0-37-generic
[...]
Package: linux-image-3.16.0-37-generic
New: yes
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 3.16.0-37.51

3.16.0-34.47 is still the last kernel that works for me, although not
perfectly (rendering issues when using SNA, fallback to UXA makes system
usable but with partially very bad 2D graphics performance).

I still get the missing characters and rendering issues in Trusty with

[Bug 661711] Re: Hibernate fails on Thinkpads

2010-10-31 Thread Moritz Reiter
Eli, let's be precise: suspend to disk (hibernate) fails, but suspend
to RAM (suspend) works fine. Or is it different in your case?

I wonder what it takes to get the attention of someone who knows how to
tackle this problem. I know that Ubuntu is for free and it's great but
still I would think that this is a rather serious regression issue for a
release that is meant to be stable considering that it seems to affect
many recent Thinkpad series and even other laptop brands according to
the comments here.

Like I said in the bug descreption: I would be glad to do anything I
could to help fixing this, but I just don't have the knowledge and
experience to know how to approach this.

[Bug 661711] Re: Hibernate fails on Thinkpads

2010-10-29 Thread Moritz Reiter
** Description changed:

Since the upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (stable release) hibernate
mostly fails on my Thinkpad X60s.

The screen fades black and the harddisk LED turns on like it normally
does when the memory image gets written to the disk. But then the sleep
LED (the half-moon) starts blinking and never stops. The laptop does not
turn itself off but stays in this undefined state forever. Resuming from
this state is impossible. I have to press the power button for a few
seconds to turn it off the hard way and just then I am able to boot it
  again.

  Suspend does work normally.

In Ubuntu 10.04 I had no problems at all with hibernate.

Interestingly hibernate seems to fail only when activated after the
laptop was running for a little while. When I boot the laptop and then
activate hibernate immediately, it works fine.

I tried an upstream kernel (2.6.35-02063504-generic, from this location:
  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.35.4-maverick/)
according to the instructions in the wiki
  (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds). Initially I was not
able to reproduce the bug but by now it occurred with this kernel too.
+ It seems to happen with this kernel less often though, but that might be
+ fluke.

If any developer or some other expert could tell me which log files or
the like would be helpful to resolve this issue, please let me know and
I would be glad to provide them.

[Bug 661711] Re: Hibernate fails on Thinkpad X60

2010-10-24 Thread Moritz Reiter

- I also tried the upstream kernel according to these instructions:
- https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds and wasn't able to
- reproduce the bug. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's fixed there
- because I just tried to hibernate just after booting with this kernel,
- which works with the regular maverick kernel too as written above.
+ I tried an upstream kernel (2.6.35-02063504-generic, from this location:
+ according to the instructions is the wiki
+ (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds) and was not able to
+ reproduce the bug. So it seems that the issue is fixed there.

If any developer or some other expert could tell me which log files or
the like would be helpful to resolve this issue, please let me know and
I would be glad to provide them.

[Bug 661711] [NEW] Hibernate fails on Thinkpad X60

2010-10-16 Thread Moritz Reiter
Public bug reported:

Since the upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (stable release) hibernate
fails on my Thinkpad X60 in roughly 8 out of 10 times. After pressing
the Fn-key for hibernate, the screen fades black and the harddisk LED
starts blinking. But then the Sleep LED (the half-moon) starts blinking
and never stops. The laptop does not turn itself off, it just stays in
this undefined state forever. Resuming from this state is impossible. I
have to press the power for a few seconds to turn it off the hard way
and just then I am able to boot it again.

Again: In Ubuntu 10.04 I had no problems at all with hibernate.

[Bug 285999] Re: gnome-terminal tabs switch is slow when maximized

2008-10-23 Thread Moritz Reiter
I tried it with and without compiz now and it makes no difference.

But after looking more closely I have to specify: There's not any delay
in switching the terminal content itself but only in switching the
focused tab into the foreground which gives the false impression that
there would be a delay in switching the whole terminal content. So it's
really just a matter of beauty and the bug probably shouldn't be
regarded as very important (on the other hand for many users especially
these little unimportant things decide whether the user finds the system
slick and smooth or not).

[Bug 98605] Re: Sound problems on hibernate, IBM T41

2007-04-30 Thread Moritz Reiter
I can confirm this bug on a Thinpad T30.

Sound works after cold start.
Sound stops working after (warm) reboot and after resuming from hibernation.
Sound is working again after resuming from suspend.

This problem definitely appeared only after I upgraded from 6.10 to
7.04. To make it really clear: I had _no_ sound problems with 6.10.

Probably this bug is related to #57141.

I will attach output requested on
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems.
