[Bug 343714] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty KDE 4.2 very high memory usage

2009-06-12 Thread Musthafa Meeran
I think this problem has something to do with the xorg intel drivers only.
I don't have these issues now, after reverting to older intel 2.4 driver and
with the MTRR fix. BTW, I am currently using Ubuntu 9.04 with gnome desktop.

[Bug 314928] Re: [i915GM] MTRR entry gets removed when restarting xorg - causes corruption on ttys

2009-06-07 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Thanks for fixmtrr.sh !!.. it solved the slow performance problems in my
Intel 945GM running Ubuntu/Kubuntu 9.04.

BTW, I am using the older xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4.
If I use the default xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.6.3, then fixmtrr.sh fixes the
performance issues, but causes screen corruption, which can be clearly noticed
when switching windows using Alt+Tab !!

2009-05-04 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Hi, I am sorry to say that I am currently not using Jaunty due to some
graphics performance issues of the newer xorg/intel drivers and I am
using Intrepid now. So I couldn't get the required data now. I ll do
it once I have upgraded to Jaunty. Can we keep this bug open till
then?

Thanks a lot...

  Option ModeDebug true
Then you log out and in again (this starts a new session and new logs) and
then on the command line, run the command:
 apport-collect 342904
This should automatically upload more information than what we already got
from you, most important is Xorg.0.log which now gets more information due to
the ModeDebug setting and, and the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `xrandr

You say that this is happening when you're using a docking station. Does
it also happen when you have the external monitor connected without the
docking station? If there is a difference, please run the apport-collect
command in this configuration as well.

2009-04-29 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Zack, many thanks for the heads-up. I have already reinstalled
Intrepid and I am not currently thinking of upgrading to Jaunty until
it becomes stable for my everyday use.

If there is any way to test it without installing, I would be very
glad to do it.
Also, I can provide any info needed from my Intrepid installation,
where everything is working great.

 @Musthafa:
GLXgears is not a benchmark and is misleading in this case for a number of
reasons. What sort of framerates do you get in PPracer?

I didn't try the same in Jaunty, but in Intrepid, I am getting 25-45
FPS in ppracer.

 @Musthafa,Xavier,Alvin,noisymime,Gnorou,Ace Suares regarding EXA:
You've all said that EXA is too sluggish. The only way it is acceptable for
me is if I have put in the Greedy fix and ensured that MTRR is set up
correctly - have you all done both of those things, because I now find EXA +
Greedy + working MTRR acceptable and I get a smoothish 19FPS in ppracer.

No, I have tried only the EXA+Greedy and not the MTRR one, which I
didn't know at that time.

2009-04-17 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Since RC is already released and the issue is still there, I think
there is almost no chance of getting it fixed before the final release
!!!

So, I have reverted back to Intrepid and I am happy now !

Users having these intel chipsets should be strongly discouraged from
upgrading/installing Jaunty 9.04, until there is a fix.
The known issues section of the release notes should mention this
problem (and possible temporary solutions like UXA, EXA etc).

I would suggest warning the intel chipset users by means of a 'Warning
Dialog' before the installation stage. I guess it would be prevent the
users from wasting their time, unless they want to experience the
problem for themselves !!

UXA is not going to be enabled by default in Jaunty, since it is not stable.
In my case, I am experiencing frequent X freezes.
So, to stress the point, using UXA is out of question, atleast for now.

If this bug can't be fixed before the final release, I would suggest going
back to the older versions of the driver packages where it was working fine
!!

It is very important that the desktop should be usable, by the time the
release happens. Otherwise, users would be forced to switch back to older
versions like Intrepid !!

Is there any way we can make this bug get better attention?

Re: [Bug 342923] Re: (Needs UXA) Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance in Kate text, etc.

2009-04-13 Thread Musthafa Meeran
 1. Disable desktop effects or

Doesn't help much, still KDE is very slow compared to Intrepid, (like
slow refresh during application switch). Also, has issues with poor
screen refresh and overlay of parts of plasma-widgets/applications
over other applications like Kate, Kmail (comment #2) etc, which are
still not resolved.

 2. Enable UXA and see if UXA is stable in your scenarios.

Seems to solve the performance/screen refresh problems mentioned
above. But performance is not as good as in Intrepid. Mainly, it has
stability issues (Bug #342675) which prevent me from enabling it.

So, both these workarounds doesn't help in my case !!

I am not sure if this bug is a duplicate of bug #339555. The below
points might be of help.

* I just tried Gnome Jaunty and found it to be usable faster
compared to KDE. Gnome compiz effects are slower but acceptable,
except for the application switch show desktop, which are horribly
slow !!
* Disabling desktop effects in Gnome has the same problems as I
mentioned for (1) like poor screen refresh etc.
* So, I was wrong in comment #8 to say that gnome was working fine,
but it is noticeably faster compared to Kwin, even though not as fast
as in Intrepid.

Looks like the latest intel driver is in very poor unusable state for
my chipset Intel 945 GM !!!

Please let me any information you need from me regarding this and I
will provide them as soon as I can.

Thanks a lot...

Thanks Harald for the update.

Currently in my system, 'top' as well as 'free' commands show 1.5GB real

I am confused as to which one should be relied upon for the real memory

Could you please tell me which one can I rely upon for the memory usage?
All these years, I have been using 'top' 'free' in the server machines and
thats why I thought 'System Monitor' is showing wrong values.

I still feel that the usage values should be consistent across different
tools/utilities.

[Bug 342923] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance on HP/Compaq nc6400 laptop

2009-04-02 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Below are some of the links where Intel graphics users complain about the same
problem.
Since Intel graphics cards are the default in majority of the chipsets, this
problem would affect a wide variety of users. I will change the subject to make
it generic, by removing my laptop model.

So, I think this bug should be taken on priority and fixed as soon as possible.
I would be very very happy to see a fix before the final release !!

[Bug 343714] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty KDE 4.2 very high memory usage

2009-04-02 Thread Musthafa Meeran
The first screenshot was to show the memory usage, immediately after
reboot/login, without opening any applications.

So, this probably looks like two separate issues.

Please let me know what other information is needed to investigate, and
I ll provide them as soon as I can.

Thanks a lot..

[Bug 354042] [NEW] Kubuntu Jaunty network management widget not fully visible and not remembering positions

2009-04-02 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: plasma-widget-network-manager

1) The network management widget is not fully visible. Especially for
wireless networks, the portion which shows the list of available
networks is partially hidden.

Only after the 'Unlock Widgets' and manually adjusting the different
portions of the widget, I am able to get it to show my wireless network
!!

2) Also, it doesn't remember the position that I have selected and
always defaults to the partially hidden view (first attachment below)

3) One more problem is that, by default, it doesn't show the entire text
inside the widget (as you can see in the second attachment below). If I
try to expand it manually, I am able to get it to show the full font,
but it doesn't last as it doesn't remember the position/size - problem
(2) above

Could you please have a look into these issues and fix them before the
final release?

Thanks a lot...

[Bug 343714] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty KDE 4.2 very high memory usage

2009-03-26 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Unless I restart every day, I find the system very sluggish in terms of
performance. Looks like some memory leak or something, but I don't know
how to find out what applications are causing the same.

Currently I have only firefox/dolphin/konsole/kate opened, but the usage
shows that the entire 2 GB main memory and nearly 1 GB of swap is used
!! and I find even typing this comment itself slightly unresponsive
sometimes.

Could you please help me find out which applications are causing this problem?
I don't how much memory each application is supposed to take.

[Bug 342923] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance on HP/Compaq nc6400 laptop

2009-03-21 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Just tried out the latest gnome in Kubuntu Jaunty.
All the issues that I have mentioned are not present in gnome !! The compiz
window manager is lightning fast and I didn't notice any kind of sluggishness
or poor performance.

So this looks like an issue with the KWin window manager/desktop effects
and I am not sure whether this is related to my video driver, since it
is working fine in gnome.

Please note that I tried both gnome/kde without using UXA.
KWin problems seem to be solved only when UXA is enabled. But as I mentioned
before, there are some critical issues with UXA which cause system freezes
frequently.

Could you please look into this problem also considering the above
points ?

Thanks a lot...

[Bug 314212] Re: Apport unable to report crash - urlopen error timed out

2009-03-20 Thread Musthafa Meeran
I still get this error in Kubuntu Jaunty alpha 6 !! But it occurs randomly,

So, I don't think it is fixed completely yet. This is preventing some of the

I am getting in even when firefox is open and the network connecting is
active !!

Is there a way I can submit the crash bug after I get this error?

[Bug 345525] [NEW] ubuntu jaunty bash completion for sudo not enabled by default

2009-03-19 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash-completion

I did a fresh install of Kubuntu Jaunty today and noticed that bash
completion doesn't work with sudo, by default.

Web search found me this page -
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6923243

which says that the following code in /etc/bash.bashrc should not be
commented.

if [ -f /etc/bash_completion ]; then

But this is commented in a fresh install !!!

Could you please enable bash completion for sudo, by default ?

[Bug 342923] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance on HP/Compaq nc6400 laptop

2009-03-18 Thread Musthafa Meeran
I have xserver-xorg-video-intel/jaunty uptodate 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu1
installed today, but still it doesn't seem to fix the slow performance
issues with my Intel 945 GM.

So, I have to re-enable UXA again to make my Kubuntu Jaunty usable.

I just noticed that glxgears with UXA gives around 250 FPS.
If I don't use UXA (i.e using default configuration), I get around 1100 FPS !!
So, I doubt know why there slow performance issues with the default
configuration.

This seems very strange to me, because enabling UXA fixes the slow
performance issues with my desktop effects (like slow window switch,
minimize/maximize effects etc) !!

Thanks a lot...

[Bug 343588] [NEW] Kubuntu Jaunty - System Monitor (ksysguard) showing different memory/cpu values and graphs than top

2009-03-16 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ksysguard

Hi,
KDE 4 System monitor is showing wrong values of memory/cpu utilization in
graphs under System Load tab.

For the memory and swap usage, 'top' command shows very high usage
values, whereas ksysguard shows very less values.

For the cpu usage, the values shown in Process Table and System Load
never match (even after multiplying the Process Table cpu % values by 2,
to consider dual core) !

The wrong values in ksysguard are misleading to the user, since 'top'
shows the correct usage.

[Bug 343714] [NEW] Kubuntu Jaunty KDE 4.2 very high memory usage

2009-03-16 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

Hi,
After upgrading to Jaunty from Intrepid, the general memory usage of KDE became
very high and the memory usage keeps on growing with the the continuous run. I
don't know why all the base applications occupy so high memory.

Opening kmail, konsole, firefox and eclipse alone causes memory swapping and
the system becomes very slow.
It never happened in Intrepid with KDE 4.2.

[Bug 342923] [NEW] Kubuntu Jaunty Intel 945 GM - Poor sluggish graphics performance on HP/Compaq nc6400 laptop

2009-03-14 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After upgrading from Intrepid to Jaunty recently, I found that the
general graphics performance is poor.

* With desktop effects on, window switching minimize/maximize are horribly
slow and sluggish. Switching off desktop effects help a bit, but still the
following problems remain.
* The screen refresh is very poor and sometimes leaves the traces of other
windows in the current windows !
* Selecting text in Kate seems to cause a late refresh and the texts realign
themselves after selecting - again screen refresh

None of this used to happen in Intrepid with KDE 4.2. Unfortunately,
since I have upgraded, I couldn't get the log files from Intrepid, where
it was working fine !

Through ubuntuforums I learnt about UXA. After enabling UXA ('Option
AccelMethod uxa' in xorg.conf 'Device' section), all the above
problems were gone and it worked just fine as in Intrepid !! But there
are other problems like frequent system freezes and all
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/342675) with UXA.

[Bug 342748] [NEW] Kubuntu Jaunty - ksysguard smaller quick search box

2009-03-14 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Public bug reported:

In the attached screenshot, it can be seen that the quick search box is
relatively smaller and text typed there is not fully visible.

But it was relatively bigger in Kubuntu Intrepid with KDE 4.2 to show
the complete text (i don't have the screeshot since I have upgraded from
Intrepid to Jaunty a day back)

Attaching the Xorg log file when the freeze happened.

It happened when I just clicked on the 'K' menu and did nothing special,
so looks like it happens randomly.

During the freeze, mouse moves, but no clicks are possible, and Keyboard
is completely froze. So the only way out is to do a hard reboot !!

[Bug 342438] [NEW] Kubuntu Jaunty - laptop docking station problem - wrong screen resolution and plasma crashes always during login

2009-03-13 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Public bug reported:

Yesterday I updated from Intrepid to Jaunty, since I very much like KDE
4.2. It was working smoothly in Intrepid, but after upgrading to Jaunty,
I encountered the following problems.

Reporting a new bug, since the bug raised by apport (plasma crashed with
SIGSEGV https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/342223) was closed automatically
!!

When my laptop is mounted in the docking station, the laptop screen resolution
is wrongly detected as 1152x864 instead of the original 1440x900 (in kdm as
well as after login). When not mounted in docking station, it is correctly
identified.
This was working fine in Intrepid with KDE 4.2.

And KDE always starts with no plasma and black blank screen. When I try to
start plasma using krunner or konsole, it crashes. But it starts without any
problem, when not mounted in docking station.
Again, this was working fine in Intrepid with KDE 4.2.

So, it looks like a problem with the new kernel or the xorg video
driver, which I am not sure.

[Bug 273837] Re: USB mouse acceleration reset when plugged in

2009-03-13 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Problem is still there in Kubuntu Intrepid/Jaunty using Logitech USB Laser
mouse.
As mentioned in comment 1, Even though the selected value is still shown in the
mouse configuration page, I have to adjust the mouse pointer threshold
every-time I login, by increasing/decreasing it a bit, to get back the normal
acceleration set.
Also, in my laptop, whenever there is a power change (ac mode/battery mode),
mouse speed increases again and I have to repeat the procedure mentioned above.

Could you please have a look at this?
Please let me know what details are needed to debug and fix this problem and I
ll provide them.

Thanks a lot

2009-03-12 Thread Musthafa Meeran
I am also having very slow video/graphics performance using Alpha5 in my
HP nc6400 laptop with Intel 945 GM !!

All the times, xorg is running with more than 50% of cpu and I can
clearly hear my laptop fan sound !!!

The sluggishness can be clearly seen even when typing in a konsole and
it is very slow.

This was not the case with Kubuntu Intrepid with KDE 4.2.

Could you please help me in resolving this before the final release ??

Thanks a lot...

[Bug 337908] Re: ubuntu /var/log/messages not getting updated

2009-03-05 Thread Musthafa Meeran
hey sry for the incomplete information.
Btw, i just figured out that sysklogd package is not installed in my machine
(I didn't know the package name which writes logs to /var/log/messages) !!!
I just installed it and I am able to find some process id in
/var/run/syslogd.pid

I hope that this would solve the problem. But still I am not sure how
that package got removed in first place. Also one more strange thing is
that the Services window shows that service as running (with checked
box), but that package itself was not there !!

Thanks a lot...

Re: [Bug 337908] Re: ubuntu /var/log/messages not getting updated

2009-03-04 Thread Musthafa Meeran
In the Services window, the checkbox corresponding to sysklogd is checked, I
even tried unchecking checking the box again. I am not sure how to see if
that service is running.

I checked the process list 'ps aux | grep sysklogd', but it doesn't show
anything. So I guess the service is not getting started !!

Could you please let me know what additional checks I can do to figure out
the problem?

 Thanks, CaptainInsaino! :)

P.S.: It still sucks, that 70% of the the webdesigners don't care about
providing clean stylesheets (Yes, Canonical. You too). You can't just
assume that all browsers will have the same default colors. So if you
want a color in your site - specify it, damnit.

[Bug 240395] Re: HP/Compaq nc6400: Resume fails after suspend to RAM

2008-11-17 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Hi,
I confirm that this is fixed in Intrepid.
I have been using it since its release and I am really happy for this :)

Also, Intrepid is more stable in my system compared to Hardy. Hardy used
to hang a lot and I had to do a hard reboot. So far, I haven't had such
a problem in Intrepid and it is pretty rock solid in my system.

Thanks a lot to the ubuntu team for a such great release and I would
like to congratulate each one of the team for your continuous
contribution to make ubuntu a great linux that I have ever used.

Thanks Regards,

[Bug 240395] [NEW] HP/Compaq nc6400: Resume fails after suspend to RAM

2008-06-16 Thread Musthafa Meeran
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Resume from Suspend is not working on my HP/Compaq nc6400 laptop. On
resume, it shows a blank screen and no keyboard or mouse will work. The
only way to bring the system back is through hard reboot by continuously
pressing the power button.

I tried various methods given in various bugs as follows, but none of
them worked !!

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/+source/linux/+bug/226279
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/215577
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpi-support/+bug/23497
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/215577/comments/5

I also followed the guide given in
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend and got errors in the
dmesg.out as shown below:

Magic number: 0:968:373
hash matches /build/buildd/linux-2.6.24/drivers/base/power/main.c:112

Since I tried various bugs and nothing worked, I am raising a new bug
for my specific laptop model nc6400.

Could you please help me in getting this resolved?

Thanks a lot in advance.
