[Bug 2067354] [NEW] package context 2021.03.05.20220211-1 failed to install/upgrade: »installiertes context-Skript des Paketes post-installation«-Unterprozess wurde durch Signal (Beendet) getötet

2024-05-28 Thread Nils Jannik Schulze-Clewing
Public bug reported:

sudo apt install texlive-full

Fortschritt: [ 99%] [.]
Running mtxrun --generate. This may take some time... done.
Pregenerating ConTeXt MarkIV format. This may take some time...

From here on, it usually hangs up. Restarting with "sudo dpkg
--configure -a" unfortunately does not solve the problem

used sudo kill because ctrl + c doesn't worked

[Bug 2034715] Re: install failed crashed with ReadTimeout

2024-05-12 Thread Nils Mittler
Hi all,
what is the current status of this issue? I am experiencing this problem with
the official (stable, released) Ubuntu 24.04 installer. Is there any further
work on this?
If this issue is being continued under another ticket, can that be linked
please?

[Bug 2051999] Re: Grub2 2.06 has upstream bug that results in Non-booting with ZFS after snapshot of bpool.

2024-03-21 Thread Nils Herde
I've had two systems taken down by what seems to be this bug now in the
last few weeks. This, together with the mismatched kernel and userspace
version of the ZFS tooling is really, really bad.

I do get that a ZFS root and the HWE kernel together is a rather
esoteric setup but it's all out-of-the-box available to setup from the
installer and repos.

At this point any roll out of the 6.5 kernel should not be offered to
users with a ZFS root and some sort of official documentation for how to
recover should probably be posted somewhere.

[Bug 1966066] Re: audio from external sound card is distorted

2022-03-29 Thread Nils Ackermann
Same Problem here with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and 5.13.0-37.

The test kernel works for me: uname -a gives 'Linux
5.13.0-37-generic #42~20.04.1+lp1966066 SMP Tue Mar 29 06:12:21 UTC 2022
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux' and sound is ok again.

Thanks for resolving this so fast!

I had the same issue as described when installing fresh 20.04.

I fixed it by adding `~/.config/openbox/autostart` and adding the line:
`feh --bg-scale "path/to/image"`

After that I could login to the openbox session as normal.

[Bug 1875114] Re: freeipa-server package missing on Ubuntu 20.04

2022-03-13 Thread Nils K
Since december last year the freeipa-server package is in the debian
experimental distribution
(https://packages.debian.org/experimental/freeipa-server). Sadly it
seems like it will not be included in 22.04 LTS - maybe as a backport if
one might hope once it lands in debian.

[Bug 1962740] [NEW] Out-of-bounds read during processing 7zip archive

2022-03-02 Thread Nils
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Out-of-bounds read during processing 7zip archive

# Description
During extraction of the attached 7zip archive via
```
/usr/libexec/p7zip/7za e -so -y /testcase
```
a out-of-bounds read is triggered and causes a segmentation fault (SIGSEGV).

This bug allows an attacker to perform a denial of service and possibly opens up
other attack vectors.

To reproduce the crash, we provide scripts alongside the crashing input:
- ./reproduce-ubuntu.sh: Reproduce crash via a Ubuntu 20.04 docker container

If you need further details, we are happy to assist where possible.

Apologies for the mismatch between this report's title and description

clamscan throws the warning I mentioned in the title when scanning an
exim4 binary from Debian 11:

[Bug 1940927] [NEW] LibClamAV Warning: Unsupported message format `global-headers'

2021-08-24 Thread Nils Toedtmann
Public bug reported:

clamscan throws "LibClamAV Warning: Unsupported message format `global-
headers'" when scanning e.g. the exim4 binary from recent releases.

When running clamscan as cronjob, such STDERR warnings produce
disruptive rootmail noise.

For example on my current Ubuntu Focal:

$ apt download exim4-daemon-light

exim4-daemon-light amd64  4.93-13ubuntu1.5 [534 kB]

$ ar x exim4-daemon-light_4.93-13ubuntu1.5_amd64.deb
$ tar xf data.tar.xz
$ clamscan ./usr/sbin/exim4

[Bug 1940851] Re: False positive: "running_procs" incorrectly reports libkeyutils.so.1.9 as "Spam tool component"

2021-08-23 Thread Nils Toedtmann
According to some reports, this ought to help:

RTKT_FILE_WHITELIST=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkeyutils.so.1.9

However, in our use case the file in question does not exist on the host
system, only inside the containers, so this yields me "Invalid
RTKT_FILE_WHITELIST configuration option: Non-existent pathname:
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libkeyutils.so.1.9"

The only workaround I have found so far is far from ideal:

DISABLE_TESTS=running_procs

[Bug 1940851] [NEW] False positive: "running_procs" incorrectly reports libkeyutils.so.1.9 as "Spam tool component"

2021-08-23 Thread Nils Toedtmann
Public bug reported:

rkhunter incorrectly reports libkeyutils.so.1.9 as "Sniffer component"
or (running_procs) as "Spam tool component".

Unfortunately, the libkeyutils1 package that recent releases of Debian
(>=11) and Ubuntu (>=20.10) ship contains /lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/libkeyutils.so.1.9, see e.g.
https://packages.ubuntu.com/hirsute/amd64/libkeyutils1/filelist

This is a known issue, see https://sourceforge.net/p/rkhunter/bugs/170/.
There's a patch in the 'develop' branch, see
https://sourceforge.net/p/rkhunter/rkh_code/ci/6c0675385cafe64ba218b53202b031f616046fe6/
. But the fix doesn't seem to have been released yet.

I am using rkhunter 1.4.6-2~ubuntu18.04.1 on Ubuntu 18.04.5, scanning
docker images that are based on Debian 11 and recent Ubuntu releases.

[Bug 1934781] [NEW] TCP socket backlog set too low ("request_sock_TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port ...")

2021-07-06 Thread Nils Toedtmann
Public bug reported:

See upstream bug reports:
- https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=968942
- https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/ticket/1208

Openvpn < 2.4.8 opens the TCP port with a too small backlog, and on kernels >
4.3 that leads to incoming connections being dropped. This kernel message is a
symptom:

  TCP: request_sock_TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 1194. Dropping
request. Check SNMP counters.

I experienced this on a Bionic 18.04.5 (after having upgraded from Xenial) with
openvpn 2.4.4-2ubuntu1.5

Fixed upstream.

[Bug 1815407] Re: nsca-ng fails under TLS 1.3 / openssl 1.1.1: "Cannot retrieve client identity" error

2021-04-28 Thread Nils Toedtmann
This also affects Bionic's nsca-ng-client=1.5-2build2. Oddly, the
server-side seems to work fine with older clients:

This works:  nsca-ng-client=1.4-2  ->  nsca-ng-server=1.5-2build2
This fails:  nsca-ng-client=1.5-2build2  ->  nsca-ng-server=1.5-2build2

... with error message "Cannot retrieve client identity".

On my Bionic, I have to downgrade nsca-ng-client to Xenial's version to
make it work. Which will be EoL in a few days.

Please fix

[Bug 1922898] Re: SEGFAULT on upgrade to 0.102-0ubuntu1~20.04.1

2021-04-13 Thread Nils Toedtmann
Same here:
Many machines with unattended-upgrade (UU). Some Focals upgraded both
netplan.io & libnetplan0 in tandem to 0.102, others left both packages at
0.101, probably depending on when they ran UU and what state the APT mirrors
where at at that time. All those machines were fine.

One machine however upgraded only libnetplan0 to 0.102 and left
netplan.io at 0.101, which broke netplan (segfault) and rendered the
machine offline. Installing netplan.io 0.102 manually from focal-
proposed fixed it.

I wonder whether retracting 0.102 from focal-updates might have actually
worsened the situation and left even more machines with different
versions of netplan.io & libnetplan0. It definitely made it harder to
rectify.

Is it adviced to use

   Unattended-Upgrade::MinimalSteps "false";

or would that have its own pitfalls?

[Bug 1857552] Re: [81NX, Realtek ALC285, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all

2021-01-08 Thread Nils Hondong
I have the same bug with a HP Spectre X360 15-eb0024ng

Already tried to change options in alsa-config:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

options snd-hda-intel model=auto
and
options snd-hda-intel model=alc295-hp-x360

Still no sound at the speaker. Headset and internal micro working

I think it is "just" an error setting the correct output device.

Can confirm and reproduce using the method described by mr. Kaufmann on
Ubuntu, Debian and Centos, so this should probably be pushed upstream.

[Bug 1895294] Re: Fix Raccoon vulnerability (CVE-2020-1968)

2020-09-16 Thread Nils Toedtmann
Thank you very much for fixing swiftly!

Please forgive me for pointing this out though:

I note that rather than stopping the affected cipher suites from re-
using secrets across connections, you chose to declare the suites as
weak and disabled them altogether.

I appreciate that this is an elegant way to close this vulnerability, in
particular in the absence of an upstream patch.

However, this solution introduces the risk that when trying to establish
a connection with some legacy client or server, they can no longer agree
on a shared cipher, and the TLS handshake fails. That is not in the
spirit of a LTS, which is often elected and used precisely because it
makes it easier to to support legacy products reliably.

Is this an official recommendation from Ubuntu, that users shall migrate
off Xenial now, because of a security issue in a core library?

I am also seeing exactly this bug on older hardware (Lenovo G560) using up to
date kernel, so this can not be a duplicate of #1861837.
Workaround as proposed does also not work.
Can I provide any more information or does anybody have another idea?

I posted to the alsa-user list... here is the link to the archive thread:

The only answer I got so far was that the Rodecaster was apparently not
completely class compliant. Hopefully someone can find more info.

[Bug 1877726] Re: [HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic, playback] USB sound with Rodecaster Pro not working

2020-05-13 Thread nils
It works out-of-the-box on a windows 10 machine (both as input and
output for MS teams, Skype, etc.) on which I have no admin access, so it
seems to work there without extra drivers.

https://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/articles/getting-started-with-the-rodecaster-pro/
claims that it is class compliant on a MAC at least: "Before you can use the
Rodecaster Pro, you first need to download and install the Rodecaster Pro app,
as well as the firmware. The Rodecaster Pro is considered class-compliant on
Mac, which means it doesn’t need third-party audio drivers. PC users will need
to download ASIO4All for proper connectivity. Follow the
steps below to get started."

On a Macbook Pro (15inch, 2011) with High Sierra 10.13.6 (won't run
Mojave) using Garageband it shows up as a RODECaster Pro Stereo, and
works (recording, playback) without a problem. I see two channels
(theoretically I should see 14 in a DAW I think?), but it works.

deleted from askubuntu (This post is hidden. It was deleted 12 hours ago

why, I would appreciate it. I gave the answer (Rodecaster appears not to
be supported) and showed a lot of debugging effort leading to that
conclusion.]

I have the same issue... I tried many things, but could not get the
Rodecaster working. I did learn quite a bit and got the Scarlett 2i2
working though.

  - editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to add options snd

  - blacklisting snd_hda_intel in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-sound.conf by
adding blacklist snd_hda_intel to that file (create it if necessary) and
rebooting disabled it, but did not help with the USB sound for the Rodecaster
  - pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload after the changes (instead of a
reboot) doesn't change anything either. Note: pulseaudio restarts itself and
does not need to be manually restarted (Is there another way to restart the
sound system if pulseaudio/ALSA don't work?)

The Answer (as it appears to me at least):

  - The Rodecaster is recognized as a USB device, but somehow not recognized by
Alsa
  - I grabbed a Scarlett 2i2 gen3
(https://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/hardware_support)
  - edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to comment out #options snd-usb-audio
index=-2 to allow snd-usb-audio to be the first device
  - edited /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to add options snd

HDA Intel

Then the Scarlett showed up. Leaving the HDA Intel first did not let the
Scarlett show up.

[Bug 1877726] Re: [HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic, playback] USB sound with Rodecaster Pro not working

2020-05-09 Thread nils
** Description changed:

- Please see https://askubuntu.com/posts/1236257 for most background.
+ Please see
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1229085/ubuntu-with-rodecaster-pro-usb-soundcard/1236257#1236257
 for most background.
  tl;dr:
  - The Rodecaster Pro is a USB audio standard compliant device
  - lsusb sees it, but alsa cannot use it
  - trying the exact same setup with a Scarlett 2i2 USB device works (with some
caveats, see the mentioned post)

  Somehow the Rodecaster is ignored by Alsa. I am more than happy to help debug.

[Bug 1856246] [NEW] gitk's "Markup words" and "Color words" modes incorrectly display patches that contains angle brackets

2019-12-12 Thread Nils Schimmelmann

How to reproduce the bug, first create a patch with the following "git diff
--word-diff=plain" diff.

Use gitk and switch into "Markup words" or "Color words" mode (e.g.
"gitk --color-words -- bug.txt"), and then select one of the radio
buttons. You will see:

  * "Diff" shows bogus removal on 1st line and bogus addition on 2nd line.
  * "Old version" cuts off at right angle bracket.

[Bug 1853273] Re: --force-dark-mode flag in init file does not get recognized

2019-11-21 Thread Nils K
Just to clarify, the --force-dark-mode flag works different from the
#enable-force-dark flag.

--force-dark-mode should instruct the browser to use a dark UI layout,
i.e. menus, omnibar etc.

#enable-force-dark instructs chrome to force a dark mode for websites
using different color inversion algorithms etc.

And --enable-features=WebUIDarkMode should instruct chrome to use a dark
mode on internal pages like chrome://settings and chrome://extensions

  What happened instead:

2019-11-19 Thread Nils K
When I however add in the init file it gets sourced and shows up in
chrome://version but does not work as prefers-color-scheme is still
light. If I supply it at the command line it correctly works but shows
up twice on chrome://version. Should I report this in a seperate bug or
in the chromium bug tracker?

Okay and theoretically I should be able to remount the /usr/share folder
as a loopback in media, right? But that would be a needlessly
complicated solution. Would reinstalling the snap in classic mode fix
the problem?

2019-11-19 Thread Nils K
Yes it probably was. I did not thought about snap overwriting that file.
Thanks for the tip, I will do so.

I am curious though - is the init file generally looked for by the
default chromium build or the snap?

[Bug 1851895] [NEW] No access to local files outside /home

2019-11-08 Thread Nils K
Public bug reported:

Due to the fact that snaps are very restricted one is unable to open local
files outside of ones own home directory.
An example where such an access is common are files from *-doc packages like
`/usr/share/doc/python3-doc/html/index.html`.
I don't know if this is fixable with the current interfaces or if this requires
a classic confinement mode but I miss this feature as sometimes running a
webserver is not an option...

Might not be related, but check if you have a high file descriptor limit
configured (1048576). In my case that caused a delay in the pkexec cmd

[Bug 1838002] [NEW] Wrong default location for the mysql socket

2019-07-26 Thread Nils Rennebarth
Public bug reported:

The sources are built with the configure command:

override_dh_auto_configure:
dh_auto_configure -O--buildsystem=cmake -- \
-DINSTALL_LAYOUT:STRING=DEB \
-DPLUGINDIR_DEB=mariadb3 \
-DWITH_MYSQLCOMPAT=ON \
-DWITH_EXTERNAL_ZLIB:BOOL=ON \
-DMYSQL_UNIX_ADDR:STRING=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock

However in the sources in mariadb_config/mariadb_config.c.in,
there is the line
#define SOCKET  "@MARIADB_UNIX_ADDR@"

In include/mariadb_version.h.in:
#define MARIADB_UNIX_ADDR "@MARIADB_UNIX_ADDR@"

And in libmariadb/mariadb_lib.c:
mysql_unix_port = (char*)MARIADB_UNIX_ADDR;

So the sources must be built with
-DMARIADB_UNIX_ADDR:STRING=/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
to have the desired effect. Otherwise the ages old default from CMakeLists.txt,
i.e. /tmp/mysql.sock
is used, which is of course different from what the ubuntu mariadb-10.3 package
uses.

Same error on HP zBook 15 G5, with a discharge rate between 300-400 mW.
Running arch linux though. Would the log files still help?

[Bug 1832884] [NEW] libsparsehash-dev homepage link broken

2019-06-14 Thread nils mccarthy
Public bug reported:

"apt show libsparsehash-dev" shows "Homepage: http://code.google.com/p
/google-sparsehash".

Going to this URL gives a redirect page to
https://code.google.com/archive/sparsehash, which doesn't exist.

Going to http://code.google.com/p/sparsehash instead redirects to
https://github.com/sparsehash/sparsehash; this might be the correct
homepage to list?

1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
-> About Ubuntu

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.6 LTS
Release:16.04

2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

$ apt-cache policy libsparsehash-dev
libsparsehash-dev:
  Installed: 2.0.2-1
  Candidate: 2.0.2-1
  Version table:
 *** 2.0.2-1 500
500 http://azure.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/universe amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3) What you expected to happen

I expected to be able to go to sparsehash's homepage via the URL listed
in the "Homepage:" field.

4) What happened instead

I got a redirect page with a broken link.

[Bug 1785171] Re: Intel I219-V Ethernet Interface on Ubuntu Linux Using e1000e Driver keeps Dropping Internet Connection

2019-05-22 Thread nils
Kai-Heng,

I tested it with 4.20 from Ubuntu mainline at the time and it still had the
issue. I think all ubuntu 4.x kernels ship with 3.2.6-k version of the e1000e
module.
I haven't tested the 5.0 release yet though.

As an addition, my lenovo ThinkCentre M720q hasn't had any issues since
I've updated to 3.4.2.1-NAPI.

[Bug 1785171] Re: Intel I219-V Ethernet Interface on Ubuntu Linux Using e1000e Driver keeps Dropping Internet Connection

2019-05-06 Thread nils
I had the same symptoms as in #58 on my Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q but
running 18.04.2 desktop.

Built the latest Intel driver, signed and installed it and updated initramfs.
I've been running for half a day now without problems, when previously the
symptoms would arise very quickly after boot.

[Bug 1820614] [NEW] Mail notification's headlines do not mention autoremovals

2019-03-18 Thread Nils Toedtmann
Public bug reported:

We run unattended-upgrades happily with 'Unattended-Upgrade::Mail'
active and 'Unattended-Upgrade::Remove-Unused-Dependencies'

Sometimes a UU run would not install nor hold anything, but only
autoremove packages that have become obsolete, typically old kernels. In
such cases, UU's mail notification reads:

"""
 Unattended upgrade returned: True

 Warning: A reboot is required to complete this upgrade.

 Packages that were upgraded:

 Package installation log:
 [...]
"""

Which is quite irritating.

It would be very helpful if it also contained a line "Packages that were
(auto-)removed:"
