[Bug 1788320] [NEW] After upgrading from 4.4.0 to 4.15.0 system doesn't boot - ACPI issue
Public bug reported: I'm using Xubuntu in an old system, I'm concerned because other users looking for a light OS for their old PC wouldn't be able to install or boot the 18.04 version and above. With kernel 4.4.0 the system boots without problem (xubuntu 16.04), after upgrading to kernel 4.15 the system doesn't boot anymore (18.04). This issue was present when testing kernel 4.13 too. The install crashes with an error: BIOS bug:8254 timer not connected to io-apic error on. Adding any of these commands to the boot allows the system to load properly: -acpi=off -pci=noacpi -acpi=noirq I attach the info related. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "files.tar.gz" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1788320/+attachment/5178960/+files/files.tar.gz -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1788320 Title: After upgrading from 4.4.0 to 4.15.0 system doesn't boot - ACPI issue To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1788320/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1735024] Re: Cannot boot without acpi=off
I have the same issue with an old DELL Dimension C521, after a little debugging I've found that the problematic component is the PCI, it booted using: pci=noacpi This system in particular doesn't has ACPI-based fan control so there isn't risk turning the acpi off. [Bug 998329] [NEW] Since I have updated to the latest version of Ubuntu 12.04 my system crashes whenever I use Firefox or Chrome.
Public bug reported: Since I have updated to the latest version of Ubuntu 12.04 my system crashes whenever I use Firefox or Chrome. I am unable to pinpoint any particular action that causes this crash. I let the system try to recover on its own, but it never does. When I am surfing the web the entire system will simply lockup and the cooling fans will go to full RPM's. I am able to move the mouse on the screen, but it doesn't do anything and at this point I need to hard-boot. I have used other programs and the lock-up does not occur. It only happens when using the browsers. I know this probably isn't enough information to properly diagnose my problem. Let me know what else would help. I'm a bit of a novice. Thanks. [Bug 334707] Re: Ubuntu 8.10 freezes, hard shutdown, Superblock and filesystem corrupted
I think I might have made a minor breakthrough... I was using VNC to access this machine from another room. I had OpenProj, Firefox and Kmail running. Firefox had a number of tabs open. The minute I clicked on Synaptic Package Manager to install PartEd (ironically) I noticed a spike in the CPU usage. That old sinking feeling hit me and before I could kill the process the VNC window seemed to freeze. I came to this machine to find the screen blank with the Caps Lock key flashing. None of the methods worked to get access to a shell to reboot (no SSH/Telnet, no Webmin, etc). I did a hard shutdown, booted a LiveCD and used PartEd to check the filesystem. Luckily there wasn't as much damage as there had been with the previous crashes. After fixing a couple of corrupted inodes I was able to boot and run everything with no problem. Again, I've grabbed the logs to include with this report. ** Attachment added: dmesg.log http://launchpadlibrarian.net/23178005/dmesg.log -- Ubuntu 8.10 freezes, hard shutdown, Superblock and filesystem corrupted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/334707 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 334707] [NEW] Ubuntu 8.10 freezes, hard shutdown, Superblock and filesystem corrupted
Public bug reported: Greetings, all, Long story short: Avid Linux head for years, set up Ubuntu 7.x on this laptop back in May. Never had a single problem or crash until upgrading to 8.10. Now sure what the cause was but I was using VNC to access the machine from remote, noticed the desktop locked up, and it forced me to do a hard shutdown. The first couple of times it happened I got an Error 17 with Grub loader; the superblock was hosed. Used a LiveCD to fsck check the drive, still ended up with weird errors and then yesterday I finally formatted everything and built it from the ground up. Everything was looking great until a few hours ago when the crash happened again. Per the support policy, I've attached the logs and a couple of results files from PartEd (in a .tar.gz file). ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Ubuntu 8.10 freezes, hard shutdown, Superblock and filesystem corrupted https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/334707 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
