[Bug 1726159] Re: PCIe BUS Error causing really slow laptop performance

2018-06-01 Thread Osama Abbas
I face the same issue on my HP ProBook 440 G4. And my laptop has the
same crappy RTL8723BE WiFi chip. But the PCIe Bus Error and Wifi
problems you might be facing are separate issues. The PCI bus errors can
be cured by adding pci=noaer to the kernel args as mentioned by many
users in the thread above. AER spams this error so much that it
overwhelms your disk and so logging in becomes near impossible. Easiest
option for you would be adding this kernel arg when you hit grub during
boot.

If you have Wifi signal issues on Linux then that's due to a quirk with
this 8723 chip. Don't want to sidetrack this bug thread so I'll just ask
you to search for the "RTL8723BE ant_sel" fix.

[Bug 1164280] Re: GPU lockup Errors on 12.10 64-bit, this past week after dis-upgrade

+ This past week I've been getting frequent GPU lockup errors. Ubuntu has
detected an error related to apport-gpu-error-intel.py. I often experience a
long lag in display refresh when browsing during this error report, but not

The only major change that I can think of is a recent dist-upgrade that I did
before the locks reports started showing up, but not sure how tight a
correlation it is time-wise.

+ The machine has not completely locked up so far ... maybe once, Ubuntu
lockups are not very rare so it could've been something else. The most annoying
part of this error is the apport messages. They're more disrubtive than the
error itself.
+ One more thing that might be related is that in the past few months since
12.10 installed, compiz commonly spikes the CPU 1-4 times a week making the
machine slow enough that I often prefer to reboot than to wait it out.

[Bug 1123479] [NEW] conversion from svg to png causes mogrify to consume all memory available in the system

2013-02-12 Thread Ahmed Osama
Public bug reported:

conversion from svg to png causes mogrify to consume all memory
available in the system

in kubuntu version 12.1

i dot imagemagick via apt-get install inkscape which also i think
installs imagemagick with it

using command mogrify -format png *.svg

what happens is mogrify consumes all memory in the system including the
swap space and goes into a freeze and stays like that until i kill the
process manually

the specific svg file that causes this is attached to this bug

it can also be downloaded via this link http://www.clipshrine.com/Metal-
pot-cover-14107-medium.html through the svg link

however inkscape can open the file and display it

I confirm the same issue with a Lenovo W510.
A similar problem exists with Mavrick 10.10. But with Mavrick I can switch to a
console (using Ctrl+Alt+f5) and reduce the brightness using the function keys
then. Whereas this trick doesn't work with Natty.

[Bug 775060] Re: Random GUI freezes in Natty (can only move the cursor)

2011-05-04 Thread Osama I. Al-Dosary
I confirm this bug. Running a clean install of Ubuntu Natty 11.04 on
Lenovo w510. Freezing seems random. And mouse motion continues to work
when machine frozen.

[Bug 607004] [NEW] no alsa sound on 2.6.35-8

2010-07-18 Thread Osama Dengler
Public bug reported:

After the recent kernel upgrade to 2.6.35-8 ALSA sound has completely been
dropped.
None of the ALSA modules are anywhere in /lib/2.6.35-8.
/proc/asound doesn't exist and dmesg doesn't show any ALSA related messages.

I reinstalled all relevant packages but nothing changed.
Tried to recompile the ALSA modules from scratch but got some compile errors.

This has been working flawlessly with 2.6.35-7 and before.

[Bug 16161] Re: Newly added repositories don't show up in the repositories dialog

2010-05-15 Thread Osama Abbas
I'm facing the same issue in Lucid.

1) Added a repository under Other Software tab in settings window for
update-manager.
(deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-backports main universe multiverse
restricted)
2) The window did not refresh to reflect the newly added item.
3) Tried closing and launching update-manager but no success.
4) Opened /etc/apt/sources.list and the newly added repository is present at
the end of the file.

The issue has been resolved.

Well, I have removed libpam-abl.prerm from the pre/post install scripts
that are stored in /var/lib/dpkg/info. Then trying to un-install it once
again. It works.

dpkg -C shows that everything is Ok.

Thank you.

[Bug 420193] [NEW] Untranslatable message in Akregator

2009-08-27 Thread Osama
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

I reported this but in the upstream
(https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205350), but there seems
something wrong with Ubuntu build of Akregator.

There is a button labeled Cancel Fetches in the main toolbar. The
button name does not exist in the 'original' package, so it's not
included in the gettext file (akregator.pot:
http://websvn.kde.org/branches/stable/l10n-
kde4/templates/messages/kdepim/akregator.pot?revision=1014841view=markup).
Its name in the upstream KDE 4.3.0 is 'Abort Fetches'.

stick, created a folder on the desktop (and setted the wireless password
and copied some files into my Home folder), rebooted (again) using the
usb stick and finally found nothing, just a plain newly-installed Ubuntu
9.04 with no settings customized or files stored.

I repeated these steps on the other USB, same problem happened.

[Bug 351665] [NEW] Three messages should be in a singular/plural form

[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-13 Thread Osama
I reported that 'Linux' is confusing and used wrongly. I suggested

[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-13 Thread Osama
GNU/Linux isn't confusing, because it is already used in Ubuntu
documentations and the term explained in about-ubuntu. It is even used
twice in basic-commands, the aim is to use it instead of the incorrect
current one. The user who finds the term 'GNU/Linux', will google for it
and find out the whole 'story'.

[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-12 Thread Osama
Bash is a part of GNU project and it isn't the correct alternative
always. In number one, the whole operating system is case sensitive, not
only Bash (filenames, most of programming language, and so on). In
number two, you can see clearly that the whole system is meant so as in
number three and four. We don't have to 'explain' the GNU/Linux story,
we shall only name it correctly when we mean the entire operating
system.

Anyways, I think the issue is simple enough. Replacing the few terms
will mention the operating system correctly and will cause no problems,
as we always do in Ubuntu Documentation.

[Bug 341377] [NEW] Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-11 Thread Osama
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

In basic-commands document, there must be a clear difference between GNU/Linux,
the whole system (or we can just call it 'Ubuntu') and the kernel Linux.
These messages must be change as they aren't talking about the kernel itself:

1.
emphasis role=\strong\Note that Linux is case sensitive./emphasis
User, user, and USER are all different to Linux.

2.
Every command and nearly every application in Linux will have a man (manual)
file, so finding them is as simple as typing commandman command/command
to bring up a longer manual entry for the specified command. For example,
screenman mv/screen will bring up the commandmv/command (move)
manual.

3.
screenman intro/screen is especially useful - it displays the
\Introduction to user commands\ which is a well-written, fairly brief
introduction to the Linux command line.

4.
For more detailed tutorials on the Linux command line, please see:

[Bug 341377] Re: Confusing on the kernel Linux and whole system GNU/Linux in basic-commands

2009-03-11 Thread Osama
I would agree with you if Bash isn't a GNU software. Here, we don't
explain the 'kernel' *at all*, we explain the GNU shell tool which has
no relative to the 'kernel'. I think you can also use the Bash package
under any UNIX-like operating system, e.g. BSD. which means it has
nothing to do with the kernel.

If it's wrong, it is wrong--no matter how many use the wrong term. When
we use the correct term, we help users understanding the story of our
system.

[Bug 335279] [NEW] 'Logout' and 'Standby' described wrongly

2009-02-26 Thread Osama
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

In If you have been using Windows document, there is two wrong descriptions
on how to logout and standby. In the Glossary of Windows Terms section, there
is:
Log Off
To close all your programs and leave the computer ready for someone else
to log in, choose System ▸ Quit..., then Log Out.

in fact, there is no 'Quit' dialog anymore, a user can directly logout
by choosing 'System ▸ Logout xxx...', where xxx is the user name.

Same issue with 'Standby' in the same section, there is:
'Standby
To put your computer into a power-saving mode until you resume using it,
choose System ▸ Quit..., then Suspend or Hibernate. (Hibernate requires no
power at all, but is slower, and is not available on some types of computer.)
