[Bug 1925392] Re: firefox remote on wayland/dbus does not work

2021-04-21 Thread Paul Collins
I dropped the following into /etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.bin.firefox and
after running `sudo apparmor_parser -r <
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox` and restarting Firefox (so that it can
bind to the name) it seems to work.

  dbus send
   bus=session
   path=/org/freedesktop/DBus
   interface=org.freedesktop.DBus
   member=RequestName
   peer=(name=org.freedesktop.DBus),

  dbus bind
   bus=session
   name=org.mozilla.firefox.*,

  dbus (send, receive)
   bus=session
   path=/org/mozilla/firefox/Remote
   interface=org.mozilla.firefox
   member=OpenURL
   peer=(label=firefox),

[Bug 1925392] [NEW] firefox remote on wayland/dbus does not work

2021-04-21 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

Attempting to open links with `firefox $URL` times out and gives me the
old familiar profile-locked error dialog.

As far as I can tell, all of the ducks are lined up correctly (thanks to
the fix for LP:1921931)

And, indeed, firefox is not listening on that name (which is correct for

[Bug 1894006] [NEW] firefox crashes with MOZ_WAYLAND_ENABLE=1

2020-09-02 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

Recently I decided to try running firefox 80 directly via Wayland,
instead of via X11. It crashed. (I haven't tried any previous
versions.)

I found the following in /var/log/audit/audit.log:

type=AVC msg=audit(1599023168.948:3997869): apparmor="DENIED"
operation="mknod" profile="firefox"
name="/dev/shm/wayland.mozilla.ipc.0" pid=1042373 comm="Compositor"
requested_mask="c" denied_mask="c" fsuid=1000 ouid=1000

I added the following to /etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.bin.firefox:

  /dev/shm/wayland.mozilla.* rw,

reloaded the profile:

sudo apparmor_parser -r < /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox

and now it works.

One last correction: openvswitch-dbg is in 16.04 LTS as well. But for
some reason these also exist:

[Bug 1886360] Re: please build debug symbols

2020-07-05 Thread Paul Collins
It looks like there are debug symbols being build, but the situation is
a bit confusing. For 16.04 LTS, there's *-dbgsym on ddebs.ubuntu.com.
For later releases, there's openvswitch-dbg in the regular Ubuntu
archive.

[Bug 1886360] [NEW] please build debug symbols

2020-07-05 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

I have some problem machines where a backtrace of ovs-vwitchd would be
helpful.

Unfortunately it seems that this package does not produce debug symbols.

Please consider updating it to do so.

The problem machines are running 16.04 LTS, so a backport to that
release would also be very useful.

[Bug 1726155] Re: openvpn doesn't automatically connect

2020-07-02 Thread Paul Collins
The bug linked in #3 seems to be about regular connections, not VPNs.

It's possible to configure VPNs to connect automatically as follows, via
the terminal:

First, find the UUID of the VPN connection:

nmcli connection | grep vpn

Then, modify the relevant primary connection(s) to add the VPN as a
secondary:

nmcli connection modify NAME-OF-CONNECTION connection.secondaries
UUID-OF-VPN-CONNECTION

[Bug 1879231] Re: avahi dbus permissions for Ping method need updating

2020-05-17 Thread Paul Collins
Ah, but the denied message is a send, not a receive, so that's not it
(tested locally with a hacked snapd).

I took a look at the generated profile and it expanded to this:

 692 dbus (send)
 693 bus=system
 694 path=/
 695 interface=org.freedesktop.DBus.Peer
 696 member=Ping
 697
peer=(name=org.freedesktop.Avahi,label="{unconfined,/usr/sbin/avahi-daemon}"),

but in the logging I'm seeing peer_label="avahi-daemon".

[Bug 1879229] [NEW] pulseaudio/audio-playback are difficult to use

2020-05-17 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

In order for a snap to successfully connect to PulseAudio, the following
needs to be done:

1) request and connect one of pulseaudio or audio-playback (mentioned for
completeness)
2) add ${SNAP}/usr/lib/$SNAPCRAFT_ARCH_TRIPLET/pulseaudio to LD_LIBRARY_PATH
3) point libpulse at the pulseaudio socket, e.g., in a wrapper:

papath="$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/../pulse/native"
if [ ! -e "$papath" ]; then
echo "Cannot not find '$papath'"
exit 1
fi
export PULSE_SERVER="unix:$papath"

(I got this from tests/lib/snaps/test-snapd-pulseaudio/files/bin/pawrap
in the snapd source, which seems to imply this is how it's designed to
work.)

Steps 2 and 3 seem like they should be handled by some part of the
system, if not necessarily snapd, and not left to the snapper to
discover for themselves.

[Bug 1869261] Re: popups move to top left of window when opened

2020-03-26 Thread Paul Collins
On a second machine also running current focal (it's not convenient to
do it on this one right now) I disabled extensions via the Extensions
pref panel, deleted my user extensions, and removed gnome-shell-
extensions.

There were a handful of extensions still on disk whose packages have a
lot of reverse dependencies, which I didn't remove.

Then I rebooted and logged back and and reproduced the problem
successfully as per example 1 above.

[Bug 1869281] [NEW] btrfs-convert of ext4 yields unmountable FS

2020-03-26 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

This is with btrfs-progs 5.4.1-2 in focal. Similar result with
5.2.1-1ubuntu1 in eoan.

Following conversion, both mount and btrfs check report an extent that
reached beyond the end of the device:

ERROR: dev extent devid 1 physical offset 126701535232 len 33554432 is
beyond device boudnary 126726701056

I was doing this booted from a live USB image, so I only have pictures
of the screen, which I will attach.

I used -d to speed up creation of the ext2 image, but it also happens
without -d.

Same here; that's the version this bug report is against.

[Bug 1869261] [NEW] popups move to top left of window when opened

2020-03-26 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

When I open a popup selection menu or a drop-down menu from a legacy
menu bar, it behaves oddly.

First, it appears in about the right place. Then it jumps to the top-
left of the owning window, and the items scroll off. I can navigate it
with the keyboard and mouse and it's almost usable. When the popup is
closed and I try to open it again, it refuses to appear until I quit the
appliation and reopen it.

Example 1:

 * open Settings
 * select Default Applications
 * click one of the options to pop up its menu
 * it may open in the right place, or immediately jump to the top left of the
window
 * if it opened in place, attempts to interact cause it to jump to the top left
of the window
 * close the popup, and it can't be opened again (at least not visibly)
 * close the app, reopen it, and the process can be repeated

Example 2:

 * some apps with legacy embedded menu bars also behave weirdly, e.g.
Quod Libet's menus will jump around similarly quite often, but not
entirely consistently

I assumed gnome-shell is responsible for positioning and rendering
popups, but maybe this is a GTK+3 bug?

[Bug 1868911] Re: exiting overview on empty workspace causes windows from other workspaces to be visible

2020-03-24 Thread Paul Collins
That bug sounds like a different problem to this one. Also, it was
reported against 3.35.91. I did not observe this behaviour with gnome-
shell 3.35.91-1ubuntu2.

** Changed in: gnome-shell (Ubuntu)

  When I toggle in and out of the overview on an empty workspace, windows from
other workspaces appear. They are not interactable, so this seems more like a
rendering bug than the windows really being teleported to another workspace.
Switching back to another workspace that has windows causes the ghost windows
to disappear. Opening a window in the empty workspace makes it appear on top
of the ghost windows, and I have to switch to another workspace and back again
to make only the new window be visible.

  I am using the vanilla "GNOME" session type. I did not observe this

[Bug 1860500] [NEW] consider disabling apt-secure's Label check in Ubuntu

2020-01-21 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

As of 1.5 (per apt-secure(8)) apt checks and warns if a repository's
Label value changes.

This probably makes sense for Debian, where folks may be tracking stable
instead of buster, and will want to be warned when stable starts
pointing somewhere else.

However, Ubuntu doesn't have such repository aliases and, furthermore,
for PPAs, the Label value is populated from the "display name" of the
PPA. This means that a PPA owner, fixing what they may assume is a
simple typo, will require their users to take action before they
receive further updates from the PPA, which is less than ideal.

Please consider disabling this check by default in Ubuntu, if only for
PPAs.

[Bug 1848902] Re: haproxy in bionic can get stuck

2019-10-31 Thread Paul Collins
To reproduce:

   apt install haproxy
   for x in {1..100}; do pkill -TERM -x haproxy ; sleep 0.1 ; done
   systemctl status haproxy

Observe that the unit has failed due to exit-code: "Active: failed (Result:
exit-code)"

To test the fix:

Repeat the steps above with the fixed package installed.

Observe that although the unit may still have failed, it is not due to
exit-code, e.g.: "Active: failed (Result: start-limit-hit)".

If you perform upgrade testing, note that simply installing the fixed
package seems to revive haproxy without needing systemctl reset-failed
haproxy. Confirm this by checking systemctl status haproxy for "Active:
active (running)" after the upgrade.

[Bug 1831483] [NEW] metrics on pushed routes not applied

2019-06-03 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

We have a couple of VPN endpoints located in different places. These
each provide access to a bunch of things located in both places. We
decided that it would be a good idea to let people connect to both
endpoints so that by adjusting the metrics on the pushed routes (we used
500 and 1000) our users would always use the shortest available path.

This works great with vanilla openvpn, but when using network-manager-
openvpn, the metrics are lost and instead "50" is used, which means that
only one gateway is used. Ideally network-manager-openvpn would use the
supplied metrics so that traffic is routed as intended.

This seems to affect network-manager-openvpn in releases of Ubuntu up to
18.04 LTS, and possibly beyond.

[Bug 1815910] Re: Apparmor blocks access to /dev/vhost-net

2019-03-25 Thread Paul Collins
I tripped over this problem recently with an instance that needed its
neutron port recreated.

At some point the apparmor profile was regenerated while the instance
lacked a network interface and so the permission required to reattach it
was lost.

I ended up editing and reloading the profile manually, although re-
running virt-aa-helper in a suitable manner would probably have been
simpler and safer -- had I known it existed.

[Bug 180184] Re: keyserver.ubuntu.com does not seem to synchronize with other important keyservers (MIT in particular)

2019-02-06 Thread Paul Collins
Correction (that's what I get for not checking the configs first!): it
was classified as "safe" and therefore sent an internal peer.

[Bug 180184] Re: keyserver.ubuntu.com does not seem to synchronize with other important keyservers (MIT in particular)

2019-02-06 Thread Paul Collins
We're currently running a somewhat complex split architecture in order
to mitigate the SKS "key of death" problem.

The request above was probably classified as "unsafe" and sent to one of
our internal peers (we're using a whitelist rather than a blacklist).

I've forwarded the email you sent me directly to our ticketing system
(r...@admin.canonical.com).

[Bug 1813086] [NEW] packaged gem binaries cannot be located

2019-01-23 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

As noted in https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=710814
packaged gem binaries cannot be located via .bin_file/.bin_dir and will
cause other ruby code that attempts to execute binaries via these
methods to fail.

Note that in 2015 bundler stated placing gem binaries in a directory
named "exe", but although the error may differ slightly the cause is the
same. https://bundler.io/blog/2015/03/20/moving-bins-to-exe.html

This is a particular problem for gems that attempt to execute rake via
this method. Since the ruby packages depend on the rake package, gems
end up with a version of rake that they cannot run via
.bin_dir/.bin_file.

And also, because of bug 1405108, installing a newer version of rake via
"gem install" doesn't solve the problem.

[Bug 1802212] [NEW] typo in uwsgi.ini

2018-11-07 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

Package: mailman3-web
Version: 0+20170523-14

/etc/mailman3-web/uwsgi.ini has the following:

ubuntu@neat-satyr:~$ grep process\ \\\|master\  /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini
master = true
process = 2
ubuntu@neat-satyr:~$ _

There should be 3 processes (the master + 2), but there are only 2:

ubuntu@neat-satyr:~$ ps uf -C uwsgi
USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
www-data  5099  0.0  0.3 242632 60076 ?Ss   Nov07   0:01 /usr/bin/uwsgi
--ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini
www-data  5102  0.0  0.3 316364 53656 ?Sl   Nov07   0:00  \_
/usr/bin/uwsgi --ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini
ubuntu@neat-satyr:~$ _

Changing "process" to "processes", which is what the uwsgi documentation
says to use, yields the expected number:

ubuntu@neat-satyr:~$ grep processes\ \\\|master\  /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini
# Setup default number of processes and threads per process.
master = true
processes = 2
ubuntu@neat-satyr:~$ ps uf -C uwsgi
USER PID %CPU %MEMVSZ RSS TTY STAT START TIME COMMAND
www-data  9345  0.0  0.3 242776 62228 ?Ss   01:45   0:00 /usr/bin/uwsgi
--ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini
www-data  9347  0.0  0.3 316508 55160 ?Sl   01:45   0:00  \_
/usr/bin/uwsgi --ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini
www-data  9349  0.0  0.3 316508 55160 ?Sl   01:45   0:00  \_
/usr/bin/uwsgi --ini /etc/mailman3/uwsgi.ini
ubuntu@neat-satyr:~$ _

Please consider changing the config file in the package to use the
correct key.

[Bug 1802036] [NEW] postinst's parsing of mailman3-web.py is brittle

2018-11-06 Thread Paul Collins
Public bug reported:

The postinst script parses mailman3-web.py with sed, and relies on the
"ADMIN" value looking like this:

ADMINS = (
 ('Mailman Suite Admin', 'r...@lists.admin.staging.canonical.com'),
)

i.e. a) "Mailman Suite Admin" must be present and b) the closing paren
must be left-aligned.

The mailman3-web charm writes the file in the following perfectly valid
Python:

ADMINS = (
('Mailman Web Admin', 'r...@lists.staging.canonical.com'),
)

but which violates a) (wrong text) and b) (closing paren is indented).

We can fix this particular point in the charm but ideally the package
would be able to cope with any valid Python syntax.

2018-11-05 Thread Paul Collins
** Description changed:

  We noticed recently that MAAS apparently no longer marks MBR OS

[Bug 1791572] Re: upcoming certificate expiry

Unless pollinate used to use --pinnedpubkey as well, it seems that
including the server certificate would have had no effect, so
entropy.ubuntu.com.pem was merely confusing not only in name but also in
its contents, before r319 landed.

I could have sworn that pollinate pinned the entropy.ubuntu.com
certificate itself, hence this bug, but it's clearly not currently
included in the source package. Thanks for looking into this, and sorry
for the noise!
