[Bug 1248878] [NEW] nm-connection-editor goes into infinite loop when trying to change 'Password with Certificates (TLS)' VPN connection

2013-11-07 Thread Paul Koerbitz
Public bug reported:

To reproduce:

$ nm-connection-editor

Douple click an existing VPN connection

Authentication Type - Password with Certificates

User Certificate - click on file chooser - select a .p12 file

Expected result:

new certificate file is accepted

What happens instead:

nm-connection-manager CPU usage goes to 100% and becomes inresponsive.

This is what I see in the shell:

** (nm-connection-editor:4559): WARNING **: Invalid setting VPN: ca

** (nm-connection-editor:4559): WARNING **: Invalid setting VPN: ca

** (nm-connection-editor:4559): WARNING **: Invalid setting VPN: cert

** (nm-connection-editor:4559): WARNING **: Invalid setting VPN: cert

** (nm-connection-editor:4559): WARNING **: Invalid setting VPN: cert

** (nm-connection-editor:4559): WARNING **: Invalid setting VPN: ca

(nm-connection-editor:4559): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_file_chooser_select_filename:
assertion 'filename != NULL' failed
^C
(nm-connection-editor:4559): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_file_chooser_select_filename:
assertion 'filename != NULL' failed

This loops over and over suggesting there is some infinite loop.

A possible work around is to export an existing VPN setting, to change
the filename in the exported config file and then to import it again.

2011-05-23 Thread Paul Koerbitz
+1 for release notes.

I think this is a very severe bug. Had I not been able to recover from
it relatively quickly then I might have given up on Ubuntu. I really do
love Ubuntu but this bug was quite a shock.

2011-05-03 Thread Paul Koerbitz
Doug,

I don't know anything about this really, but I would be wary -- maybe
check the internet if anyone has tried this or ask Apple, with the
information provided here? Maybe they can tell you 'sure, the efi for
that model is the same as...' Maybe they can't. But I can imagine that
by flashing the wrong firmware you can really brick your machine, so
it's high risk.

best of luck

Who,

just a short question: How long will this logic board replacement take
in your case? I am still under warranty and so will probably go to the
apple store tomorrow, but if this is taking longer than a few days it
will be a serious show-stopper for me.

2011-05-01 Thread Paul Koerbitz
I am happy to report that the reflash reported by sirblackheart in #17
worked for me too! I pretty much followed the instructions in the post,
after I shutdown the mbp and start again, the grey update screen
appears, progress bar runs through then the computer resarts and things
seem to work (this is the first restart ... but it worked right away).

@Garbriel: If I can assist with any additional information, please let
me know. I used the same image as you. The 'bless' command described in
the blogpost returned without any error message. I then shutdown the
computer, powered on again, waited about 10s, then the grey screen that
you posted appeared, the progressbar ran through (about 5s I would say),
then the computer resarted and now everything seems to work again.

This is on a macbook pro 5,5.

@sirblackheart Thank you very much for digging out that post, you were
very helpful!!

I think we should go to the blog poster and thank him too!

2011-05-01 Thread Paul Koerbitz
Hello,

is Fix Released the appropriate status here?

As I see it we now know how to recover from a messed up situation -- but
we still don't know why this situation was caused nor do we now how to
prevent it from happening in the first place. My understanding of 'fix
released' would be that we know how to keep it from happening in the
first place (like we have a patch that fixes the code that caused this).
But my understanding of 'fix released' could be wrong.

I would try to install again and get some logs, unfortunately I will
most likely not have time to do it until the week-end...

[Bug 774089] [NEW] Booting fails 3 times, works every fourth time after new install of Natty Narwhal amd64 on Macbook Pro

2011-04-30 Thread Paul Koerbitz
Public bug reported:

Dear all,

I am experiencing a severe problem after a new install of Natty Narwhal
on my Macbook Pro last night:

The install worked fine, but after reboot nothing came up except fo a black
screen.
After forcing the machine off and on multiple times I was able to bring up the
rEFIt boot menu by pressing and holding the 'Alt' (or Option) key and I can
then boot into MacOSX or Ubuntu without a problem.

After restarting / powering off I then have to turn the computer on /
off the same number of times (3 or 4, I don't remember exactly) where
nothing happens until it works again.

I am using a MacbookPro 5,5 (13.3 Inch). My harddisk is setup as follows:
200MB Partition for EFI
20GB Partition for OSX
18.6 GB Partition for / (ext4)
108.49 GB Partition for /home (ext4)
1.86 GB Partition for swap

Other people also seem to experience the same issue:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=10743955posted=1#post10743955

This is a pretty big problem for me, so your help is very much
appreciated.

[Bug 774089] Re: Booting fails 3 times, works every fourth time after new install of Natty Narwhal amd64 on Macbook Pro

2011-04-30 Thread Paul Koerbitz
Hello all,

First of all Who thank you for the extensive information. I was a little
sloppy in describing the condition but can confirm that I have the same
symptons as you (first power on: flashing 'sleep' light, then loud beep,
then a couple of power-ons where nothing happens, then booting seems to
work fine.

* I have also tried wiping the hard disk clean and to freshly install
MacOS X which __does not__ resolve this issue. So it seems that it is
not limited to the hard disk.

@Colin: I am afraid this rules out getting any install logs from me,
sorry I only read your post when my reinstall was already under way. I
think that Canonical should maybe put a warning out somewhere
prominently, if I had not performed the upgrade / install and was a
Macbook Pro user, then I most certainly would appreciate being warned of
this issue.

* I could also not find a firmware restore cd for the Macbook Pro 5,5.
These two threads
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2751759?threadID=2751759tstart=45
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2221986?threadID=2221986
discuss that topic, nobody seems to be able to find the appropriate cd.

* I will try to do the PRAM (Command-Alt/Option-P-R) and SMC
(http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964) reset, but have little hopes that
this will solve the issues as Who described it wasn't working in the
Apple store.

* Will then investigate firmware updates further - it seems really off
that installing ubuntu would prompt something like a logic board
replacement...

[Bug 688135] [NEW] Vim: No highlight for selected area in visual mode

2010-12-09 Thread Paul Koerbitz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vim

Hello,

is there no highlighting of the selected area in the terminal-based
version of vim anymore?

1) Release: Ubuntu 10.10 amd64
2) Package-Version: 2:7.2.330-1ubuntu4 (package 'vim')

To reproduce:
Open gnome-terminal.
open any file in vim, e.g. type $vim fubar.txt
use visual mode (v) to select some text

3) I expect to get a visual indication of some sort of the area highlighted
4) The text is selected (I can copy it or delete it) but there is no visual
indication of the area selected

This problem does not occur in other editors (like nano). If I select
text in the terminal I also get a visual indication (selected part has
white background in 'default' theme).

[Bug 688146] [NEW] Maverick: Very slow and unstable wireless connection with BCM4322 on 5, 5 Macbook pro

2010-12-09 Thread Paul Koerbitz
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Ever since installing Maverick (Ubuntu 10.10 amd64) the wireless
connection has been very bad. It is unstable (looses the connection or
is unable to connect to an access point with full signal) and very slow
when connected. I am positive that this is not due to the access point,
as I have tried with several APs and my current workaround is to use the
USB-tethering of my phone with the same AP.

EDIT: package version: 5.60.48.36+bdcom-0ubuntu5

There is also a thread on ubuntuforums with quite a few people reporting this
issue:

I'll be glad to provide more info.

[Bug 569418] Re: deja-dup fails on backup to external drive with g_file_get_uri: assertion `G_IS_FILE (file)' failed

2010-10-13 Thread Paul Koerbitz
