[Bug 993086] [NEW] Installer crashes at transferring settings for Alternate and Live installs

2012-05-02 Thread Peter Cooper
Public bug reported:

The machine has no O/S installed and is a basic ASUS F1A 55-M LE
motherboard, nothing else installed except 4GB of memory.

We tried to install 12.04 (64 bit) using flash drives and also a CD.

Initially we could get nothing but a blank screen, but using 'nomodeset'
in the grub command line allowed the Live CD to run OK.

Trying to install resulted in an installer crash - every time about 3/4
of the way through (during a section talking about transferring
settings).

This also occurred on the Alternate text based installer.

[Bug 776157] [NEW] Update Manager accepted admin password in non-admin account

2011-05-03 Thread Peter Cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

Not sure how this happened however . I have a machine I use as a
media centre. It logs in automatically to a non privileged account. This
morning - forgetting I was in this account I ran Update Manager. It
asked for my password, without thinking I gave it my privileged account
password. It accepted and performed the update/upgrade. At no time was I
asked for my user id.

[Bug 708712] Re: Wireless Card RTL819Xe on a Samsung N150 netbook

2011-01-31 Thread Peter Cooper
Latest updates seem to have solved the 'device not ready' problem on
first boot (although this still happens on resume from suspend). However
I am still getting problems with not connecting properly, see attached
file.

[Bug 703979] [NEW] UbuntuOne continually faults leaving system unusable

2011-01-17 Thread Peter Cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntuone-client

On startup the system runs for 30 seconds or so after login, then
becomes extremely busy and multiple instances of a minimized filemanger
are opened. These instances will not maximize. Nautilus becomes
unusable. The following error is produced in the .xsession-errors log.

Removing UbuntuOne was the only solution.

[Bug 349397] Re: [TOSHIBA Satellite Pro M40] suspend/resume failure

2009-04-01 Thread Peter Cooper
This error occurs during a resume. Having shut the lid on the laptop for
suspend, I then attempt a resume. There is really no response from the
machine, the power button which is slowly flashing orange turns to green
but no other response, the machine fan does start but then stops. At
this point the machine has a black screen.

An interesting point is that I am unable to turn the machine off.
Holding the power button results in a momentary power-off followed by an
immediate restart (power-up) into the fault mode. There appears to be no
'boot' process here, no loss of power to the machine, its all immediate.
The only way to recover the machine is to remove the battery.

This is a repeatable event.

This is an almost Vanilla Jaunty install, I use this laptop as a test
bed for development testing. However note that I believe this bug to
have existed in Intrepid as well. I have looked in the BIOS in an
attempt to prevent the 'nonpower-off' problem but there appears to be no
options that may be relevant.

[Bug 164398] Re: Sony Vaio TZ11M/N suspend and hibernate problems

2008-06-24 Thread Peter Cooper
Small breakthrough, suspend worked for a few weeks with a recent Hardy
kernel release after I changed the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file's line
referring to the Intel sound driver:

options snd-hda-intel

to

options snd-hda-intel model=hippo probe_mask=1

according to part of the thread in
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=514292page=15

And so long as I had the wireless switch to off (!).

But then it stopped working after I accepted a kernel update, from
memory 2.6.24-16 going to -17. Gah. This time, suspend attempts
sometimes dropped crud onto the display, before the hard lock, with one
error referring to the iwl4965 module already having a zero count or
something.

On an off-chance, next reboot I decided to try and pre-emptively unload
the module before suspend, which I did manually. Ahah! It worked.

So I added the following line to /etc/default/acpi-support

MODULES=iwl4965

And voila! I get reliable suspends now. I AM REALLY REALLY HAPPY ABOUT
THIS :-)

Removing the line from the file results in failure during suspend of the
flashing underscore with hard lock type, so I'm pretty sure something
about this module is problematic.

Hibernates (or sleep-to-disk) still fails with endless console
references to count=0 for a USB reference.

[Bug 164398] Re: Sony Vaio TZ11M/N suspend and hibernate problems

2008-03-08 Thread Peter Cooper
I burned a CD with today's Hardy Heron Alpha (i386) live-cd.

The shutdown dialog in Gnome did not present a hibernate button as
Leanne suggested. I clicked the suspend button, but the laptop continued
to operate with full-fan, power light on, no disc activity for ten
minutes with no sign of suspend activity, and the system had to be hard
rebooted (holding power button for 10 seconds) before any response to
keyboard or touchpad occurred.

Looking at Ubuntu forums, I see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4469268 where there was much
earlier discussion about interrupts and audio modules (now talk about
hippo) to resolve suspend problems. Unfortunately the suggestions didn't
work for me.

Can I provide any additional dumps from the live-cd? The lspci stuff
again?

Thanks!

[Bug 199887] [NEW] Bandrich C100 HSPDA modem failure due to udev or hald actions

2008-03-08 Thread Peter Cooper
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: udev

I'm unsure which group to associate this bug with; first off my
apologies if this needs to be rerouted. I have associated it with udev
since that was the subsystem I used to resolve the issue.

The Bandrich C100 is an expresscard or USB wireless broadband modem. It
contains an additional flash storage subsystem containing (windows)
drivers.

When the device is attached to the system, the USB tty ports are
identified but as soon as the storage subsystem in Ubuntu 7.10 or
today's alpha of Hardy Heron kicks off, a device reset disconnects the
USB tty ports. This occurs every second, making the card unusable.

My fix was to add the following text into
/etc/udev/rules.d/51-bandrich-c100.rules containing

SUBSYSTEM==block, \
ACTION==add, \
SYSFS{idVendor}==1a8d, \
SYSFS{idProduct}==1002, \
OPTIONS=ignore_device

which blocks the filesystem scan/mount attempt.

Perhaps a better solution is needed for this kind of issue?

Public bug reported:

While booting Hardy Alpha2 (openChrome graphics) the machine finally
ends up with a black screen which cannot be recovered using control-
alt-f1 or control-alt-backspace. The O/S appears to be running because
when shutting down it appears to go through a shutdown sequence. This
occurs when booting with safe graphics mode as well.

[Bug 164398] Sony Vaio TZ11M/N suspend and hibernate problems

2007-11-21 Thread Peter Cooper
Public bug reported:

This is using Gutsy.

Suspend always results in a failure to resume. Black screen, no hard
drive activity, no response to caps lock key etc.

Hibernate seems to only work once after a reboot. All subsequent
attempts to hibernate result in one of the following situations:

1. A screen lock dialog after a few seconds (ie no hibernate action, but
no hard lock either!)

2. Appears to successfully hibernate, but subsequently a failure to
resume with disk activity visible, but otherwise a black screen with
blinking underscore cursor, no response to caps lock key etc.

3. A weird hard lock with either a black screen or blinking underscore
cursor, no response to caps lock key, power light and disk light
permanently on. Appears to stress the system, as the cooling fan spins
up and doesn't spin down.

This behaviour is fairly consistent, but doesn't quite match any of the
other bug reports I've seen.

Thanks!
