I burned a CD with today's Hardy Heron Alpha (i386) live-cd. The shutdown dialog in Gnome did not present a hibernate button as Leanne suggested. I clicked the suspend button, but the laptop continued to operate with full-fan, power light on, no disc activity for ten minutes with no sign of suspend activity, and the system had to be hard rebooted (holding power button for 10 seconds) before any response to keyboard or touchpad occurred.
Looking at Ubuntu forums, I see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4469268 where there was much earlier discussion about interrupts and audio modules (now talk about hippo) to resolve suspend problems. Unfortunately the suggestions didn't work for me. Can I provide any additional dumps from the live-cd? The lspci stuff again?
