[Bug 1610361] Re: /usr/bin/deb-systemd-helper: error: systemctl preset failed on samba-ad-dc.service: No such file or directory
I just received the same error message upgrading from 2:4.5.8+dfsg- 0ubuntu0.17.04.3 on Ubuntu 17.04: Setting up samba (2:4.5.8+dfsg-0ubuntu0.17.04.4) ... Failed to preset unit: Unit file /etc/systemd/system/samba-ad-dc.service is masked. /usr/bin/deb-systemd-helper: error: systemctl preset failed on samba-ad-dc.service: No such file or directory To someone that isn't a "samba installation process expert", but who understands plain English, this message is very clear: The installer attempted to do something but it failed and as a result an error occurred. Thus, even if Samba appears superficially to be working, it may not be. It might have caused some subtle problem that will come back to bite later. So, irrespective of exit status; if, as described above, this message does NOT actually indicate an error condition (because some other action intended to achieve the same thing succeeded), then the fact that it is displayed at all is a bug. For as long as it's there, people like me will keep spending time investigating and reporting it in places like this. It should be fixed so as not to waste everyone's time; even if that does just involve outputting a message like "About to try something as a fallback in case a previous step failed. A 'systemctl preset failed message' is expected so please ignore it." first. In post #7 Nish mentions that the installer is attempting "two ways that the package is using to ensure the specific service is masked". What the installer should really be doing is testing whether each of these attempts succeeded and only outputting an error message if both fail (and probably also, only trying the second method if the first failed). Perhaps this is technically difficult or even impossible to achieve, I don't know, but it seems that ought to be the solution. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1610361 Title: /usr/bin/deb-systemd-helper: error: systemctl preset failed on samba- ad-dc.service: No such file or directory To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/1610361/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1485080] Re: package linux-image-3.19.0-25-generic 3.19.0-25.26 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
I've got this too. The crash reporter told me so and opened up this web- page for me, asking me to comment. This doesn't appear to be a hardware problem to me. Why has my computer been running fine for years with all kernels up to an including 3.19.0.22 then? It feels more like Ubuntu is choosing not to support my hardware any more, and rather than telling me that and ensuring that I don't get given updates that would break my computer, it has chosen to simply apply updates in a way that brick it. Thanks! This bug caused the install of kernel 3.19.0.25 to complete but with errors like so: depmod: ../libkmod/libkmod-elf.c:207: elf_get_mem: Assertion `offset elf-size' failed. Failed to run depmod ... dpkg: error processing package linux-image-generic (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured in such a way that when my computer reboots it goes straight into initramfs claiming it can't find a disk... and yet it runs fine when I choose kernel 3.19.0.22 from the grub menu. I've run a full disk-check and memory check from the bios and it didn't identify any problems. In my opinion, this should be classed as Importance - High, Confirmed - Valid. [Bug 1364630] Re: init: Error while reading from descriptor: Broken pipe
I have got this problem upgrading three machines from Ubuntu 14.04 to 14.10, two nVidia, one AMD. It's now not possible to log into the AMD one - the desktop is missing and the system is frozen not responding to anything. I have switched to XFCE on that machine and its working fine. The nVidia machines freeze after about 10 mins on standard graphics. They are almost usable if I use the nVidia drivers, but then after 10 minutes the background will stop updating so that moving any windows around leaves an annoying trail, and when minimizing a window it appears as if it is still there. I don't if any of that is related to this bug or not. I'm also suffering from bug 1359439. Yep. Likewise. Uninstalled sendmail on Ubuntu 14.04. Upgraded to 14.10. Subsequently had waiting for network configuration during boot, and no network conection and no network manager after boot. [Bug 1385709] Re: network-manager service doesn't start at boot time
Oh.. I should add: It wasn't just that the network manager wasn't there on boot, as in the bug title. If the network-manager service was started, the network manager would appear, but pretty much every entry in the drop-down would be greyed out, so no connections could be established, such as wireless/VPN etc. The only way I could get an internet connection was to first start the network-manager service and then plug in a cable. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1385709 Title: network-manager service doesn't start at boot time To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1385709/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1193858] [NEW] autoremove after uninstalling libgv-php5 makes system unbootable
Public bug reported: I'm reporting this bug against libgv-php5, since I believe this its dependencies may be the culprit... but I can't be 100% sure. I am running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit. After doing apt-get purge libgv-php5 to remove the PHP graphviz package, libgv-php5:amd64 (2.26.3-14ubuntu1), I started receiving prompts to do an autoremove when installing/uninstalling other packages. When I finally did this, my system crashed and became unbootable; not even into a recovery mode or with old kernels. [Bug 1160471] Re: BCM4313 wl driver 6.20.155.1 not working in raring, but 5.100.82.112 does
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1097519 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1097519 Hi Adam. According to lspci, I've got a Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01). When I had problems with the v6 bcmwl drivers, one of the first things I tried was the brcmsmac ones to see if there had been an improvement since the last time I tried a few years ago. Unfortunately, the brcmsmac driver was unusable. The signal was showing as extremely weak, even when I was stood right next to the wireless router, and even then the connection was regularly cutting out. The bcmwl v5 drivers that come with Quantal work pretty much perfectly so I'll stick with those. I followed the instructions on ask ubuntu here http://askubuntu.com/questions/286734/how-to-downgrade-broadcom- wireless-drivers-bcmwl-kernel-source and have placed Package: bcmwl-kernel-source Pin: version 5.100.82.112+bdcom* Pin-Priority: 1001 within /etc/apt/preferences.d/bcmwl-kernel-source to ensure that ubuntu doesn't keep trying to upgrade them back to v6. I think this is what Ubuntu should be doing as a matter of course for all people with 'older' wireless cards that don't work with the newer broadcom drivers. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1160471 Title: BCM4313 wl driver 6.20.155.1 not working in raring, but 5.100.82.112 does To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1160471/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1097519] Re: Wrong driver used for older Broadcom chipsets
I agree with Bernado in comment #26. If this bug is campaign to get brcmsmac installed by default, then a) Bug #1160471 should not have been marked as a duplicate. Bug #1160471 is about v6.20.155.1 of the bcmwl drivers that was automatically installed with Raring not working (causing kernel panic on some machines like mine) whereas the previous version, v5.100.82.112, worked extremely well (I am using them now). b) I don't agree. I tried the brcmsmac drivers when I had problems with the broadcom ones and they don't work. The signal strength is so weak that I have to be stood next to the router and even then it frequently drops out. [Bug 1162008] Re: /usr/share/ibus/ui/gtk/main.py blocks at 100% when applications are minimised
I've just upgraded to Raring and noticed that the problem appears to be even worse now. It happens whenever I try to close or minimise Thunderbird. If I go to the ibus keyboard icon in the system tray and click on it, the drop down menu is in a state of constant flickering. I did some experiments and noticed that killing the usr/share/ibus/ui/gtk/main.py python script process doesn't help. Thunderbird keeps using 100% cpu. Also, taking it one step further and killing the ibus process also doesn't help. Thunderbird keeps using 100% cpu. I conclude from this that ibus is probably not the root cause of this problem. It's probably a Thunderbird/compiz incompatibility that is somehow causing ibus to refresh itself continuously. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1162008 Title: /usr/share/ibus/ui/gtk/main.py blocks at 100% when applications are minimised To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/thunderbird/+bug/1162008/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 927515] Re: Thunderbird stuck at 100% CPU
From the comments above it looks like there could be several distinct causes of Thunderbird running at 100%. In my case, I have just upgraded to Raring and the situation has got worse. It now happens pretty much every time I try to minimise or close Thunderbird. Thunderbird will just sit there for hours running at 100%. For me it's worse than that because I use ibus to switch languages and it causes ibus to refresh itself continuously too (see bug #1162008), thus making the computer practically unusable. My key observations are that: - Now I have upgraded to Raring, this 100% cpu usage is (sometimes) happening when I minimise Nautilus or Firefox too. When this happens, compiz is also near the top of top. - I have tried using the default xorg graphics drivers and the proprietary nvidia ones, and the issue is the same. - My colleagues that have similar setups to me (same graphics card, 64bit, similar processors) don't have the same problem. However, I am the only one that has an encrypted home directory. So, to me this implies that the root cause is some incompatibility between an encrypted home and compiz/Unity, which Thunderbird also happens to be a victim of too. It may just be that Thunderbird tries to write more configuration/database stuff to the (encrypted) home directory when it is minimised than Nautilus or Firefox and so it's a lot more noticeable for Thunderbird than for the others. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/927515 Title: Thunderbird stuck at 100% CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/thunderbird/+bug/927515/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1160471] Re: BCM4313 wl driver 6.20.155.1 not working in raring, but 5.100.82.112 does
I made sure my system was purged of all STA stuff sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta- source and then tried to install again with the latest kernel (3.8.0-21-generic x86_64) via sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source My system didn't go into kernel panic on boot this time, but it still crashed on login. After purging the STA drivers, I decided to try the brcmsmac ones. They don't work properly. This signal strength is stuck at a very low level when I'm sat a meter from the router. So I purged them too. So, I tried to compile from source. I downloaded the STA source (64bit) from http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php I tried following the compilation instructions in the readme provided, but I encountered a few problems which I was able to resolve. First one: I got fatal error: asm/system.h: No such file or directory. I was able to correct this by changing #include asm/system.h to #if LINUX_VERSION_CODE KERNEL_VERSION(3, 4, 0) #include asm/system.h #endif in src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c (following https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics- drivers/+bug/993506/comments/6) Second one: error: unknown field ‘ndo_set_multicast_list’ specified in initialiser. I was able to correct this by changing .ndo_set_multicast_list = wl_set_multicast_list, to .ndo_set_rx_mode = wl_set_multicast_list, in src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c (following http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/compiling-broadcom- driver-947294/#post4689850). The compilation was then successful. I am still getting WARNING: modpost: missing MODULE_LICENSE() in /home/laputopu/Downloads/hybrid-portsrc_x86_64-v5_100_82_112/wl.o, but it doesn't seem to matter. Finally, I had to do sudo modprobe lib80211_crypt_tkip before doing sudo insmod wl.ko and finally I have wireless back. I've attached a patch for the changes to wl_linux.c. [Bug 1160471] Re: BCM4313 wl driver 6.20.155.1 not working in raring, but 5.100.82.112 does
I have a Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Controller. The Broadcom Linux STA drivers were working fine under Quantal. After upgrading to Raring my machine went straight into kernel panic. On further investigation, I can avoid kernel panic on boot if I first disable wireless\wireless networking. My machine will go into kernel panic if I turn on the wireless with the the 3.8.0-19 kernel under Raring however. If I boot Raring, but use the old 3.5.0 kernel, the machine doesn't go into kernel panic, but wireless doesn't work properly. Keeps dropping the connection, sometimes the connection is very week, occasionally it just works fine for a while. If I uninstall the broadcom drivers via Software Updates then I don't get any kernel panic with either kernel - but I don't have any wireless either...

[Bug 927515] Re: Thunderbird stuck at 100% CPU
I have also been experiencing thunderbird sometimes consuming 100% cpu. In my case I have a suspicion that it may be related to what appears to be a bug in ibus that I have reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+bug/1162008 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/927515 Title: Thunderbird stuck at 100% CPU To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-power-consumption/+bug/927515/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1162008] [NEW] /usr/share/ibus/ui/gtk/main.py blocks at 100% when applications are minimised
Public bug reported: When I minimise applications such as thunderbird and firefox, they frequently sit in the unity launcher with the application icon and arrow flickering and my computer becomes frozen for up to 5 mins. Checking top shows me that compiz and a python script are both having a fight with python at 100%. Investigating further shows me that the python script causing the problem is /usr/share/ibus/ui/gtk/main.py This is most annoying, and I have now encountered the same problem on two separate computers running Quantal with different graphics cards. I have ibus and ibus-anthy installed on both of them. In case it is useful, I found an old thread reporting a similar problem in 2010 with Ubuntu 10.10 [1]. Then the solution appears to have been to upgrade to the latest version of ibus (1.3 at the time). I don't know if upgrading to the latest development release would solve the problem. If a launchpad PPA for a bleeding edge version of ibus was available for Quantal, I'd be happy to test it. Cheers. [Bug 1047944] Re: compiz crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message() (ibus_config_get_value)
I've been getting this crash when I log in too. Could it also be related to the fact that at the roughly the same time as this crash started occuring, thunderbird started occasionally hammering the CPU at 100% for long periods of time with the unity sidebar icon flickering? When it does so, there is often also a python script hammering another core at 100%, running this script: /usr/share/ibus/gtk/main.py. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1047944 Title: compiz crashed with SIGABRT in g_assertion_message() (ibus_config_get_value) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/nux/+bug/1047944/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1045661] Re: High CPU usage
With TB 17.0, and default setup on Quantal, when thunderbird maxes out at 100% it also causes compiz to max out at 100% cpu - which freezes my other applications too. Especially on my dual-core netbook that's a real pain! I found that blocking of compiz can be avoided by turning off the animations and fading windows effects via the compizconfig settings manager however. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1045661 Title: High CPU usage To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1045661/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 702957] Re: libgv-php5 gv::render() function does not output to browser
As far as I understand, the attached code, which uses gv::renderresult (graph_handle, string format, string outdata); should render to the outdata string. Since I have not echo'd the string, the attached example should not output anything. However, this code appears to render flawlessly for the following versions of graphviz: 2.26.3-5ubuntu4 (current detfault libgv-php5 package on Ubuntu 11.10 64bit) 2.28.0 (latest stable, custom built from source) 2.29.201206013.0446 (latest development, custom built from source) which suggests that the renderresult function is not behaving as it is supposed to. It is behaving more like the gv::render function should behave. This example fails to work at all for v2.20.2 - even if the output string is echoed manually. In summary it looks like the php bindings have been broken since at least v2.20.2 and it would be good if this could be fixed because graphviz without the ability to render is pretty useless. Thanks. ** Attachment added: This test case renders output for versions greater than 2.20.2 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/graphviz/+bug/702957/+attachment/3187620/+files/gv-test.works.gt.2.20.2.php -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/702957 Title: libgv-php5 gv::render() function does not output to browser To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/graphviz/+bug/702957/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
