[Bug 1309462] Re: 8086:0166 [Aspire V5-571P] Backlight not adjustable
Hi Christopher, Having Windows 8 on dual boot, I decided to pass via Windows to upgrade the BIOS with the exe downloaded from ACER. Boy do I regret that... It did the upgrade but subsequently I could not boot the system anymore! I managed to get into the BIOS with F2 and switch the SecureBoot option back off (apparently switched on during the upgrade) by switching off UEFI, saving the options and rebooting. Then back into BIOS again and switching UEFI on again made SecureBoot remain off (strange!)... But then I only made it to a grub rescue prompt with a message about Unknown filesystem. Lots of reading on the net on how to 'fix' this, I still could not resolve it from the prompt each attempt failing with some message about reaching end of file unexpectedly when trying to assign vmlinuz-3.13.0-24 to linux. Finally created a Live USB and followed instructions for BootRepair (took the one for saucy as there is no trusty repo for it yet) which got the system back up. Amazing software that! Back in Ubuntu, booted with only quiet splash boot parameters, I find that the backlight control is failing again as it was before I added video.use_native_backlight=1 to the kernel boot switches. dmidecode -s bios-version dmidecode -s bios-release-date V2.18 06/21/2013 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1309462 Title: 8086:0166 [Aspire V5-571P] Backlight not adjustable To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1309462/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1309462] [NEW] Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable
Public bug reported: On an Acer Aspire V5 with Intel Graphics, backlight control is not working. Both on Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 and 14.04 neither hotkeys or adjusting the applet slider has any effect. Note that the hotkeys Fn+Left and Fn+Right DO result in a moving slider indicator (this will change after testing with kernel parameters!) but no actual backlight change. Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight Testing for a workaround here are my findings. More debugging info will be attached later. TESTING FOR A WORK AROUND Reboot with only the kernel parameter acpi_backlight=vendor : Make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a brightness applet. No / Yes * sudo su echo 8 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness Please comment on if the brightness changes. Yes Reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a brightness applet. No / Yes * If using a v3.13.x+ series kernel, reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_native_backlight=1 and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a brightness applet. No / Yes * If your backlight hotkeys are Fn+Left and Fn+Right, add kernel parameter atkbd.softraw=0 to /boot/grub/menu.lst They are so I did (not /boot/grub/menu.lst but /etc/default/grub though...) and I rebooted even though it is not written I should... Then, switch to any console, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1, login by root account and execute: showkey -s I did (after reboot mentioned above) and found that the hotkeys do not give any output at all anymore... Strange. So I reverted all changed above and rebooted with only quiet splash boot parameters but still the hotkeys remain dead. Not even the faux brightness slider change anymore. Very strange! * please note that there is no brightness applet in Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 but going to the Settings Screen Brightness Lock the brightness can now be controlled BASIC DEBUGGING INFORMATION (all files will be attached later) $ ls /sys/class/backlight intel_backlight Note that this used to list video0_backlight (as I remember it) too but after testing and reverting (!) that entry remains gone. [Bug 1309462] Re: Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable
** Description changed: On an Acer Aspire V5 with Intel Graphics, backlight control is not working. Yes - Reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 + Reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0 and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a brightness applet. - No / Yes * + No / No If using a v3.13.x+ series kernel, reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_native_backlight=1 and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a brightness applet. [Bug 1153661] Re: The disk drive for /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 is not ready yet or not present
On 14.04 I tried all suggested solutions: Puny Geeks step-by-step (see http://punygeek.blogspot.com/2012/10/ubuntu-1204-how-to-solve-disk- drive-for.html), then again but using /dev/sda8 (swap partition in my case) instead of UUID, then the approach with noauto parameter in fstab and the 5 second delay in rc.local (both see http://askubuntu.com/questions/289858/disk-drive-for-dev-mapper- cryptswap-1-is-not-ready) but none worked cross reboots. One thing I find striking is that now: ~$ sudo swapoff -a ~$ sudo swapon /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 swapon: /dev/mapper/cryptswap1: lezen van kop van wisselgeheugen is mislukt: Ongeldig argument ... which means something like reading of swap header failed: Invalid argument... And it turns out after all this I cannot even reformat or recreate the swap partition in gparted. I get some kind of warning about being unable to inform the kernel of the changes made... [Bug 956530] Re: Midnight Mysteries game aborts startup with Failed to create OpenGL texture
Hi Michael, that's excellent news... Another improvement would be to add clear info on where to turn to for support (or even refund) when paid software fails. In the case of this package, mm3, it did not include a readme and the link that was sent to me via e-mail after purchase did not give me any useful info. And since I could not even file this bug against the package (even though it is listed in the options when choosing a package) here on Launchpad, it would be great if any such info could be made a minimal requirement for all paid software available in the USC. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/956530 Title: Midnight Mysteries game aborts startup with Failed to create OpenGL texture To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/956530/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 956530] Re: Midnight Mysteries game aborts startup with Failed to create OpenGL texture
After installing the proprietary nvidia driver on one of the machines (replacing the nouveau driver) the game does start without errors. Apart from the fact that it starts in a hidden window and I need to use Alt+Tab to switch to it, the game is perfectly playable. On the Intel machine, there is probably no fix? And why this issue with these open drivers? I really prefer the nouveau driver over the nvidia one since that makes my PC crash when connecting a second monitor :( -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/956530 Title: Midnight Mysteries game aborts startup with Failed to create OpenGL texture To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/956530/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 956530] [NEW] Midnight Mysteries game aborts startup with Failed to create OpenGL texture

One with Nvidia graphics using the open nouveau driver, one with Intel graphics and the i915 driver. It does not matter if I log in with Gnome Shell or Unity. I tried $ ubuntu-bug mm3 but that results in a message that no info can be collected since it's not a native Ubuntu package.
