2020-05-19 Thread RavanH
OK, 7 years after the original report, this issue still seems relevant
on Ubuntu 20.04.

So how to know if a machine needs mtrr_cleanup at all?

[Bug 1505409] Re: gnome-shell crashed with signal 5 in _XIOError()

2016-12-27 Thread RavanH
Seems to occur both on Wayland and on Xorg just the same... Strange
thing is that after upgrading two laptops to 16.10, one laptop started
showing this error right away while the other did not. But now, about
two months later, the second laptop has started too. A setting (like
lock screen background image) I changed? An update? No idea what...

That other bug does not seem to exist, or it's private... In any case:
the issue seems to only happen when a second monitor is attached (hdmi).
Furthermore it needs to be attached during boot, while attaching a
second monitor after log in does not seem to create the issue...

2014-04-21 Thread RavanH
By the way, I just noticed a (probably) related bug which exists in all
kernels and is NOT resolved with video.use_native_backlight=1

The option in the config screen Screen brightness and lock (this is a
translation, I have Dutch version so not sure how it is called in
English) where it says something like dim screen to save power...
checked or not... power cable connected or not... it does not have any
effect.

[Bug 1309462] Re: 8086:0166 [Aspire V5-571P] Backlight not adjustable

2014-04-20 Thread RavanH
Hi Christopher,

Having Windows 8 on dual boot, I decided to pass via Windows to upgrade
the BIOS with the exe downloaded from ACER. Boy do I regret that... It
did the upgrade but subsequently I could not boot the system anymore! I
managed to get into the BIOS with F2 and switch the SecureBoot option
back off (apparently switched on during the upgrade) by switching off
UEFI, saving the options and rebooting. Then back into BIOS again and
switching UEFI on again made SecureBoot remain off (strange!)... But
then I only made it to a grub rescue prompt with a message about Unknown
filesystem.

Lots of reading on the net on how to 'fix' this, I still could not
resolve it from the prompt each attempt failing with some message about
reaching end of file unexpectedly when trying to assign
vmlinuz-3.13.0-24 to linux.

Finally created a Live USB and followed instructions for BootRepair
(took the one for saucy as there is no trusty repo for it yet) which got
the system back up. Amazing software that!

Back in Ubuntu, booted with only quiet splash boot parameters, I find
that the backlight control is failing again as it was before I added
video.use_native_backlight=1 to the kernel boot switches.

[Bug 1309462] [NEW] Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable

2014-04-18 Thread RavanH
Public bug reported:

On an Acer Aspire V5 with Intel Graphics, backlight control is not
working. Both on Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 and 14.04 neither hotkeys or
adjusting the applet slider has any effect. Note that the hotkeys
Fn+Left and Fn+Right DO result in a moving slider indicator (this will
change after testing with kernel parameters!) but no actual backlight
change.

Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight Testing
for a workaround here are my findings. More debugging info will be
attached later.

TESTING FOR A WORK AROUND

Reboot with only the kernel parameter acpi_backlight=vendor :
Make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
 brightness applet.

No / Yes *

 sudo su
 echo 8 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
Please comment on if the brightness changes.

Yes

Reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0
and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
 brightness applet.

No / Yes *

If using a v3.13.x+ series kernel, reboot with just kernel parameter
 video.use_native_backlight=1
and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
 brightness applet.

No / Yes *

If your backlight hotkeys are Fn+Left and Fn+Right, add kernel
parameter atkbd.softraw=0 to /boot/grub/menu.lst

They are so I did (not /boot/grub/menu.lst but /etc/default/grub
though...) and I rebooted even though it is not written I should...

Then, switch to any console, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1, login by root account
and execute: showkey -s

I did (after reboot mentioned above) and found that the hotkeys do not
give any output at all anymore... Strange. So I reverted all changed
above and rebooted with only quiet splash boot parameters but still
the hotkeys remain dead. Not even the faux brightness slider change
anymore. Very strange!

* please note that there is no brightness applet in Ubuntu GNOME 14.04
but going to the Settings Screen Brightness Lock the brightness can
now be controlled

BASIC DEBUGGING INFORMATION (all files will be attached later)

$ ls /sys/class/backlight
intel_backlight

Note that this used to list video0_backlight (as I remember it) too but
after testing and reverting (!) that entry remains gone. Strange.

[Bug 1309462] Re: Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable

2014-04-18 Thread RavanH
My appoligies:

It turns out I forgot an update-grub after reverting the kernel
parameters. Can/should the attached debug files be removed or replaced?
Please let me know :)

And please ignore all remarks about the default interface remaining
gone. It's back and called acpi_video0 ... Also the hotkeys are working
again and the showkey output is:

Fn+Left:
0xe0 0x4c 0xe0 0xcc

Fn+Right:
0xe0 0x54 0xe0 0xd4

[Bug 1309462] Re: Intel Ivybridge Mobile graphics backlight not adjustable

2014-04-18 Thread RavanH
** Description changed:

On an Acer Aspire V5 with Intel Graphics, backlight control is not
working. Both on Ubuntu GNOME 13.10 and 14.04 neither hotkeys or
adjusting the applet slider has any effect. Note that the hotkeys
Fn+Left and Fn+Right DO result in a moving slider indicator (this will
change after testing with kernel parameters!) but no actual backlight
  change.

  Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/Debugging/Backlight Testing
for a workaround here are my findings. More debugging info will be
  attached later.

  TESTING FOR A WORK AROUND

Reboot with only the kernel parameter acpi_backlight=vendor :
Make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

  No / Yes *

   sudo su
   echo 8 /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
Please comment on if the brightness changes.

  Yes

- Reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0
+ Reboot with just kernel parameter video.use_bios_initial_backlight=0
and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

- No / Yes *
+ No / No

If using a v3.13.x+ series kernel, reboot with just kernel parameter
video.use_native_backlight=1
and make a comment on if you can now alter the backlight with hotkeys or a
brightness applet.

  No / Yes *

If your backlight hotkeys are Fn+Left and Fn+Right, add kernel
  parameter atkbd.softraw=0 to /boot/grub/menu.lst

They are so I did (not /boot/grub/menu.lst but /etc/default/grub
though...) and I rebooted even though it is not written I should...

Then, switch to any console, e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1, login by root account
  and execute: showkey -s

I did (after reboot mentioned above) and found that the hotkeys do not
give any output at all anymore... Strange. So I reverted all changed
above and rebooted with only quiet splash boot parameters but still
the hotkeys remain dead. Not even the faux brightness slider change
  anymore. Very strange!

  * please note that there is no brightness applet in Ubuntu GNOME 14.04
but going to the Settings Screen Brightness Lock the brightness can
  now be controlled
-

BASIC DEBUGGING INFORMATION (all files will be attached later)

  $ ls /sys/class/backlight
  intel_backlight

Note that this used to list video0_backlight (as I remember it) too but
after testing and reverting (!) that entry remains gone. Strange.

[Bug 1153661] Re: The disk drive for /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 is not ready yet or not present

2014-04-17 Thread RavanH
On 14.04 I tried all suggested solutions: Puny Geeks step-by-step (see
http://punygeek.blogspot.com/2012/10/ubuntu-1204-how-to-solve-disk-
drive-for.html), then again but using /dev/sda8 (swap partition in my
case) instead of UUID, then the approach with noauto parameter in fstab
and the 5 second delay in rc.local (both see
http://askubuntu.com/questions/289858/disk-drive-for-dev-mapper-
cryptswap-1-is-not-ready) but none worked cross reboots.

One thing I find striking is that now:

~$ sudo swapoff -a
~$ sudo swapon /dev/mapper/cryptswap1
swapon: /dev/mapper/cryptswap1: lezen van kop van wisselgeheugen is mislukt:
Ongeldig argument

... which means something like reading of swap header failed: Invalid
argument...

And it turns out after all this I cannot even reformat or recreate the
swap partition in gparted. I get some kind of warning about being unable
to inform the kernel of the changes made...

Starting to regret my choice to encrypt the home partition during
install :(

I noticed the tray icon not working at all in Gnome Shell unless I
change the command in the session startup list to:

bash -c sleep 10 hp-systray

Don't know if that affected anything regarding this issue though...

[Bug 956530] Re: Midnight Mysteries game aborts startup with Failed to create OpenGL texture

2012-03-19 Thread RavanH
Hi Michael, that's excellent news...

Another improvement would be to add clear info on where to turn to for
support (or even refund) when paid software fails. In the case of this
package, mm3, it did not include a readme and the link that was sent to
me via e-mail after purchase did not give me any useful info. And since
I could not even file this bug against the package (even though it is
listed in the options when choosing a package) here on Launchpad, it
would be great if any such info could be made a minimal requirement for
all paid software available in the USC.

[Bug 956530] Re: Midnight Mysteries game aborts startup with Failed to create OpenGL texture

2012-03-16 Thread RavanH
After installing the proprietary nvidia driver on one of the machines
(replacing the nouveau driver) the game does start without errors. Apart
from the fact that it starts in a hidden window and I need to use
Alt+Tab to switch to it, the game is perfectly playable.

On the Intel machine, there is probably no fix? And why this issue with
these open drivers? I really prefer the nouveau driver over the nvidia
one since that makes my PC crash when connecting a second monitor :(

2012-03-16 Thread RavanH
As far as I understand from discussions like on
http://askubuntu.com/questions/82281/help-with-chainz-galaxy it simply
won't work on intel :(

Bad Ubuntu !! For not mentioning this in the Software Center before you
buy this, I mean...

But I also read you can get a refund via
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Pay/FAQs/Refunds ... If there is no outlook on
any fix, obviously ;)

[Bug 956530] [NEW] Midnight Mysteries game aborts startup with Failed to create OpenGL texture

2012-03-15 Thread RavanH
Public bug reported:

The paid game Midnight Mysteries: Devil on the Mississippi CE as
provided by the package mm3 (I tried filing this bug against it but that
results in the error: mm3 does not exist in Ubuntu. Please choose a
different package... but when choosing a different package, I see mm3
listed again but that results in the same error) in Ubuntu Software
Center, does not start.

When calling it from command line, this error is printed:

$ /opt/MM3/MM3
Lua script executedPanic error in file
/home/ubuntu/Shared/HotSource_v5/HotEngine/Common/OpenGL/OpenGLTexture.cpp,
line 687:
Failed to create OpenGL texture (error code: 0x500, size: 500x256 - 512x256,
format: 7)
Aborted

I'm getting the same error on two different machines both running Ubuntu
11.10 64bit but with different hardware. One with Nvidia graphics using
the open nouveau driver, one with Intel graphics and the i915 driver. It
does not matter if I log in with Gnome Shell or Unity.

I tried $ ubuntu-bug mm3 but that results in a message that no info
can be collected since it's not a native Ubuntu package. Please tell me
how, if more info is needed.

[Bug 734490] Re: networkmanager docklet doesn't work with NetworkManager-0.8.4

2012-02-05 Thread RavanH
So... is this being worked on or is there no outlook on a fix? As it
seems to affect the Weather Docklet as well: It does not fetch weather
data even though it can connect to the Wunderground API to get location
data. Strange.

I was hoping to see Docky's Weather do its wonderful things again on
Ubuntu 11.10 running network-manager-gnome version 0.9.1.90-0ubuntu6 but
sadly, no :(

[Bug 856884] Re: Unity sets the wrong metacity keyboard shortcut defaults

2011-10-25 Thread RavanH
I can confirm that removing the metacity config directory solved the
issue (after a reboot because alt+f2 then r and enter to reload shell
does not work at that point)

rm -R ~/.gconf/apps/metacity
