[Bug 953547] Re: Genius iSlim 300X webcam displays ugly and upside down image

2012-03-13 Thread Santiago Roland
Upstream Kernel tested, although i had different illumination now, the
colors seemed to be a little better, but when i turned on mi desk lamp
it's like the camera driver cannot handle color saturation and
overexposure. The image is essentially the same, upside down. The hernel
tested is linux-
image-3.3.0-030300rc7-generic_3.3.0-030300rc7.201203101735_amd64. See
the screenshot

[Bug 953248] Re: cannot click on links in html messages, mouse toogles select mode in Evolution

2012-03-13 Thread Santiago Roland
A screenshot of the bug, in the mail you see that some text appears to
be selected, in fact the only thing i did was clicking on the ACTIVATE
button inside this example email after clicking in activate button,
no browser is launched but the above text is selected somehow. I just
wanted to give a more clear picture of the bug.

Another fact: The browser with the link is not launched the first click,
BUT making a double click it launches the browser.

This is affecting all HTML messages, not plain text links.

Regards,

[Bug 936946] Re: System freezed

2012-02-22 Thread roland
actually, i didn't do anything by myself.
so, i don't know how to reproduce the failure.

the system was nearly idle while i was away from the computer.
running applications: KDE 4.7, Thunderbird, Firefox.

I locked the screen and went away.
coming back after ~40 minutes, the screen was in standby mode (as expected) but
the system itself did not respond any longer.
i had to do a hard reset (pressing off btn some secs - turn on again).
there are no auto standby settings active.

expected behavior: the system should not hang?

I attached the corresponding syslog output and hope its helpful, because there
are some kernel errors...

Public bug reported:

Hello,

some times my laptop (Macbook Air 4,2) freezes while its idle.
I don't know how.

Before the latest freeze I've used HFS+ on a data partition and thought is
might be related to the HFS+ code.
But I've moved away from HFS+ and now i'm using ext3 for my data. So, it might
not be in relationship to HFS.

[Bug 423616] Re: casper boot doesn't work with some boot options

2012-02-15 Thread Roland Kwee
If this is the same problem I had, I have a fix.

My old pc cannot boot from USB. I put kernel and initrd on a spare hard
disk partition, and the root filesystem.squashfs on the usb stick
/dev/sdb1. This works with boot option: live-media=/dev/sdb1. This boot
option is documented in:
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/karmic/man7/casper7.html , but
ubuntu 11.10 does not support it. I could easily fix this, and/or do not
understand why the missing code disappeared. See attached patch.

[Bug 932219] [NEW] Launching Expo is broken if Blender3D is running under compiz (until the system is restarted)

2012-02-14 Thread Roland (Rolandixor) Taylor
Public bug reported:

If I enter expo mode (or switch virtual Desktops) with Blender3D
running, compiz becomes unusable. I have not tried with any other 3D
programs, or with the Cube. It remains unusable until I quit blender and
start compiz again - but entering expo (even after blender is closed and
compiz restarted) causes the same problem until the system is restarted.

The bug is definitely reproducable.

Even if kill X with ctrl+alt+backspace (I enabled this on the system for issues
like this) - it still happens when I log in again.
I've lost files because of it - because there is no way to recover (and my
laptop screen is broken, so I'm using an external monitor with proprietary
nvidia drivers, which means ttys don't show on it).

[Bug 528432] Re: [gm45] X crashes and restarts with *ERROR* Failed to pin buffer 4 of 17

2012-02-04 Thread Roland Hieber
I was getting this error in dmesg too on my Lenovo ThinkPad SL510, with
linux-image-2.6.32-38-generic_2.6.32-38.83. However, i915_error_state
and Xorg.0.log were both free of error messages, although X crashed
restarted. When I tried to debug the X server, gdb said that the program
exited with code 1.

In my case, it was the picture
http://stratum0.org/images/8/8e/20120204-Pony.jpg that caused Xorg to
crash when opened in Firefox, but it seems that the error is gone in
linux-image-3.2.0-997-generic_3.2.0-997.201201050433 from the drm-intel-
next mainline builds. When I open that link in Firefox, all I get now
is:

[drm:i915_gem_mmap_gtt] *ERROR* Attempting to mmap a purgeable buffer

I tried to do a git bisect of v2.6.32.52.21 to 3.2.0, but have not yet
been successful compiling the kernel from Git... :-| I will keep on
trying though.

[Bug 921533] [NEW] vtun server is not accepting client connections because of missing /var/lock/vtund at startup

2012-01-25 Thread Roland
Public bug reported:

If vtun has to accept client connections (thus you're using it as a
server), vtund fails to accept connections.

It wants to create a semaphore in /var/lock/vtund/tunnelname and fails
because /var/lock is a ramdrive and the directory is not created in any
script during startup.

Inserting mkdir -p /var/lock/vtund in /etc/init.d/vtun during start
fixes the issue.

[Bug 720446] Re: memory leak in compiz when using places, dashboard, and exposing launcher icons with multiple quicklists

2012-01-23 Thread Roland
The bad thing about this isn't necessarily that compiz leaks memory, but
you can basically watch your desktop getting slower and slower. If I
reboot Ubuntu/Unity after a week, this feels like a new machine for me.

The next day compiz seems to iterate over more objects than it needs to
already. This gets worse every day. First I thought the lagginess is
due to swapping activity, but it isn't. This is pure userspace CPU load
by compiz, slowing down all activities regarding the desktop and its
windowing.

If you keep your actions within a window, everything is fine.

I guess we should create a new bug regarding this, .. it doesn't look
like this is being reopened.

Sorry for not replying earlier. I restarted the system a few times

suspended just fine. I'm not sure what changed that allowed this.

[Bug 918457] [NEW] System does not suspend correctly

2012-01-18 Thread Roland (Rolandixor) Taylor
Public bug reported:

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 (early tester :) - and when I put the system to
suspend after applying the latest updates, the system appears to turn
off as expected (fan turns off and all that), but after a second or two
it turns back on, and returns to the lock screen.

It did not have this problem in 11.10 with Kernel 3.0.xx so I think it
is a problem with 3.2, but I could be wrong.

[Bug 720446] Re: memory leak in compiz when using places, dashboard, and exposing launcher icons with multiple quicklists

2012-01-16 Thread Roland
Please re-open this bug. It is not fixed as of today. I need to do
compiz --replace every 5 to 7 days to keep my workstation usable.

Just a few mins ago my compiz was at 2,2GB and unity was unusable. The
window content (app) itself is doing fine (unless you move/switch to
another or do anything else with them).

[Bug 912387] Re: Intel graphics stack regression (oneiric-precise) with external displayport monitor

2012-01-06 Thread Roland Dreier
So xdiagnose doesn't work for me (I seem to hit bug #903484) but I added
drm.debug=0xe to my kernel command line by hand, and got the following
output.

This is not exactly the scenario described above -- I actually booted up at
home away from my dock, suspended the laptop, came to work, and resumed in the
dock. I had exactly the same situation that my external monitor wouldn't light
up though, and I went through my (now-standard) workaround dance of:
 - log into text kernel and do xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto to turn on the
laptop screen
 - light up the DP monitor at 1024x768
 - switch the DP monitor to 2560x1440 at the same time as I turn off the laptop
screen

and I now have my X session working at native resolution on my external
monitor.

[Bug 903484] Re: xdiagnose crashed with KeyError in run(): 'nopat'

2012-01-06 Thread Roland Dreier
Actually the code in question is

if self.__disable_pat:
cmdline_default_params['nopat'] = None
else:
del cmdline_default_params['nopat']

and presumably __disable_pat is not set and cmdline_default_params
doesn't have a 'nopat' entry, so we're trying to delete an entry that
doesn't exist?

[Bug 912387] [NEW] Intel graphics stack regression (oneiric-precise) with external displayport monitor

2012-01-05 Thread Roland Dreier
Public bug reported:

I have a Lenovo t410s laptop (Arrandale graphics) that I use with a
docking station that is connected to an external monitor via
displayport. I just updated from Oneiric to the latest Precise daily,
and I've seen big regressions using this setup. I went into the display
control panel and set my monitors to be non-mirrored and set my DP
monitor to its native (2560x1440) resolution.

Now, after a cold reboot, the login screen comes up fine (in its bad
fallback resolution -- this I think is a known lightdm issue, where a
laptop+external monitor ends up with lightdm using some non-native
resolution). But then when I log in, X tries to change the mode of the
DP monitor to the correct one, and at that point the monitor just goes
black. If I do alt-f1 I can get back to a text console, but alt-f7 just
goes back to the black screen.

I am able to open my laptop and bring up the LVDS1 output, but I have
not been able to figure out how to light up the DP output.

Oneiric was able to handle this pretty well -- if I booted docked, the
external monitor was used at its native resolution, and if I booted
undocked the internal LVDS was used at its native resolution. And even
suspend/resume and docking/undocking usually worked.

I see messages like:

[ 382.963872] [drm:intel_dp_complete_link_train] *ERROR* failed to
train DP, aborting

in the kernel log, which are presumably related to the failure to light
up the DP monitor.

[Bug 912387] Re: Intel graphics stack regression (oneiric-precise) with external displayport monitor

2012-01-05 Thread Roland Dreier
Actually, just went into the display control panel and I am able to get
the external monitor to light up now at 1024x768, but native 2560x1440
still fails.

Note that sometimes I am able to get the external monitor working at the
native resolution with precise -- but I don't know what the difference
between the working and non-working sessions is.

[Bug 912387] Re: Intel graphics stack regression (oneiric-precise) with external displayport monitor

2012-01-05 Thread Roland Dreier
OK, going into the display settings control panel and making sure the
laptop LVDS is _off_ and the DP is at native resolution worked. But if
I reboot there is a good chance the DP monitor won't come up and I'll
have to go through the whole dance of going to the console, running
DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --output LVDS1 --auto, using the laptop screen to
run the monitor control panel, and transitioning back to using the DP
monitor.

[Bug 912405] [NEW] arrandale/5 series intel graphics on lenovo t410s requires intel_iommu=igfx_off with precise/3.2 kernel

2012-01-05 Thread Roland Dreier
Public bug reported:

Using the latest default precise kernel on my Lenovo T410s laptop with
Intel integrated graphics ends up with a bunch of messages like

[ 98.467011] DRHD: handling fault status reg 2
[ 98.467014] DMAR:[DMA Write] Request device [00:02.0] fault addr 40002
[ 98.467038] DMAR:[fault reason 05] PTE Write access is not set

in the kernel log, and graphics seem pretty choppy. Booting with
intel_iommu=igfx_off makes this go away.

I see that I have the calpella device that the quirk in drivers/iommu
/intel-iommu.c keys off of:

$ lspci -nn -d 8086:0044
00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller
[8086:0044] (rev 02)

but in that quirk:

static void __devinit quirk_calpella_no_shadow_gtt(struct pci_dev *dev)
{
unsigned short ggc;

if (pci_read_config_word(dev, GGC, ggc))
return;

if (!(ggc  GGC_MEMORY_VT_ENABLED)) {
printk(KERN_INFO DMAR: BIOS has allocated no shadow GTT;
disabling IOMMU for graphics\n);
dmar_map_gfx = 0;
} else if (dmar_map_gfx) {
/* we have to ensure the gfx device is idle before we flush */
printk(KERN_INFO DMAR: Disabling batched IOTLB flush on
Ironlake\n);
intel_iommu_strict = 1;
   }
}

the first test apparently ends up as false, and I just see

[0.808010] DMAR: Disabling batched IOTLB flush on Ironlake

in my kernel log, which is apparently not sufficient to make things
actually work.

[Bug 912134] [NEW] [arrandale] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x01840000

2012-01-04 Thread Roland Dreier
Public bug reported:

Problem seems to be related to the fact that I suspended my laptop while
it was docked and attached to an external monitor (displayport attached
to output DP3), and then undocked and resumed with the monitor
disconnected.

(By the way, in case it matters, with this laptop and the precise
kernel, I found I had to boot with intel_iommu=igfx_off or else I see
a bunch of messages like

[ 98.467011] DRHD: handling fault status reg 2
[ 98.467014] DMAR:[DMA Write] Request device [00:02.0] fault addr 40002
[ 98.467038] DMAR:[fault reason 05] PTE Write access is not set

where 02.0 is the graphics device; so this report is running with
igfx_off and hence a not-totally-default precise install)

[Bug 887677] Re: Possible Memory Leak using 3Finger with Ubuntu 11.10

2011-11-18 Thread Roland
Is it better if you

compiz --replace

?
I'm trying to drill down a similar problem that seems to happen with Ubuntu
11.10, Unity and Compiz. After some days of a working X session compiz is
growing and hogging more and more memory/cpu.

There is a leak somewhere.

I have several apps open all the time (VMware player, Firefox, Opera,
Gnome Terminal, ...).

$ ps aux | grep compiz
roland2424 0.0 0.0 4264 388 ?Ss Nov08 0:00 /bin/sh -c
/usr/bin/compiz-decorator
roland 17026 10.3 9.1 1373904 745044 pts/0 Rl Nov14 575:40 compiz
--replace

As you can see, it is running for 10 days (used for 8 hours a day, it
is my workstation) and already grow up to 750MB. Even if nothing happens
at the desktop at all, it consumes 10% cpu time (Core2 Duo).

This is getting worse with bigger uptimes.

If I restart compiz like mentioned, the whole desktop instantly feels
faster and more fluid (not because of the memory, I'm not swapping).

How can I help pinning this one down?

[Bug 890057] [NEW] cannot explore picture with mouse dragging when click (1:1) zoom size button

2011-11-13 Thread Santiago Roland
Public bug reported:

1) open a big picture with gpicview
2) click the 1:1 zoom button in the lower icon toolbar
3) try to explore the picture by dragging it with the mouse (pressing and
holding left click)
Result in image always displaying the initial upper left area (not refreshing
image dragging) not consistent with the scrollbars that are indicating
successful dragging.

This bug does not occur if (+) zoom button is pressed until the image
size reaches 1:1 approx, the image is dragged fine.

[Bug 659258] Re: Infiniband/RDMA rules absent

2011-11-07 Thread Roland Dreier
FWIW, on my Oneiric system, I did modprobe rdma_ucm and I see:

$ ls -l /dev/infiniband/
total 0
crw-rw-rw- 1 root root 10, 57 2011-11-07 10:34 rdma_cm

so with kernel 3.0 or newer, things work as expected.

(You can try this with a system that doesn't have any RDMA hardware)

As far as I know, this bug is only an issue on Natty and older.

[Bug 875632] Re: When http_proxy is unreachable, banshee spins 200% cpu (and may lock entire system if unlucky, requiring unclean reboot)

2011-11-06 Thread Erik Roland van der Meer
It would seem that the update does not fix the problem, but widens its scope
instead.
Before the update, having an Internet connection but not having an Ubuntu One
account was fine.
According to Bart (above), after the update, that scenario is now broken too.

[Bug 849110] Re: Regression: keyboard backlight hotkeys no longer work

2011-11-06 Thread Roland-pastorino
I have also a Macbook Pro 3.1 with Ubuntu 11.10. I can control the
brightness using the 3 keys (up/down/toggle) but the behavior is not the
right one. The up key works properly. The down key decreases the
brightness as expected but when the brightness is set to 0%, there is no
backlight (as expected) and the screen indicator says that the
brightness is 100% (this is not correct). The toggle key has exactly the
same behavior as the down key instead of toggling the brightness.

[Bug 885559] [NEW] unity session crashed when browsing pictures in pendrive with Image Viewer

2011-11-02 Thread Santiago Roland
Public bug reported:

plugged a pendrive and went through nautilus to folder where are JPEG
and AVI files taken with a PentaxOptio 12MP. Double clicked in photo and
opened with Image Viewer. started to browse pictures with next arrow
button, and suddenly the whole session crashed and lightDM prompts
again. Start session again and did the same steps... suddenly the
session crashed. I suspect that the crash was when the Image Viewer
reaches an AVI file, but i can't tell. Maybe ther eis something in the
logs attached.

[Bug 884528] [NEW] odd nautilus beahavior when browsing files by pressing letter keys

2011-10-31 Thread Santiago Roland
Public bug reported:

Start nautilus and start browsing some files. The you may press, say the
E key in the keyboard for nautilus go and select the first E file in
the list. Then press another letter, and start writing a word, like
EXPLORE because yo know there is a file called explorer.txt that you
want to find. Now if you miss type a letter you cannot delete or correct
using the BACKSPACE key because it will go back in folder level and put
you in the previous level. If you want to correct the mistake and find
your file, you must double click somewhere and start to write again.
This nautilus feature is very useful and it is not working.

[Bug 454220] Re: Nvidia fail with DKMS on linux-generic-pae - needs depends on -pae kernel header file package

2011-10-28 Thread Roland Meier
This is still an issue.
Since the default kernel was automatically changed to a -pae variant some time
this year, every time the kernel is updated the matching -pae header is not
updated along with it even though the installed proprietary nvidia driver's
kernel module depends on it.
After the next reboot the X server fails to start (which was a major nuisance
for me at the beginning since the text mode couldn't be displayed on the
attached TV and I had to attach a monitor for debugging) failing to load
nvidia.ko.
So now I have to check after every update whether the kernel image was updated
and in this case to manually install the matching -pae header package,
otherwise I would get a black screen after reboot again (at least now I have a
textmode my TV can handle...).

Today the kernel image was updated from 3.0.0-12-generic-pae to
3.0.0-13-generic-pae, linux-headers-3.0.0-13-generic-pae was again not
installed automatically. After installing it manually run-parts automatically
created
/lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic-pae/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia
/lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic-pae/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia/nvidiafb.ko
/lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic-pae/updates/dkms/nvidia_current_updates.ko
/lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic-pae/updates/dkms/nvidia_current.ko
/lib/modules/3.0.0-13-generic-pae/updates/dkms/nvidia_173.ko

So yes, this is still a VERY annoying issue until today in Oneiric.
There should be a dependency making sure that the matching kernel header is
installed after an update of the kernel image if the nvidia X-server is
installed.

RE: [Bug 879025] Re: Ubuntu 11.10 upgrade overwrites MBR

2011-10-27 Thread Roland Vossen
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 882252 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/882252

Hello Phil,

I do not agree that this bug is a duplicate of bug 882252. The situation
is different: the presence of ClearCrypt / PGP WGE is critical. My
theory is that the installer tries to find other OS'es on the HDD, the
installer will not recognize the encrypted Windows partition, and the
installer will (wrongly) conclude that it is OK to overwrite the MBR.

Master Boot Record was overwritten without notifying the user when
