[Bug 157988] no official Swedish time server mentioned in list of available time servers in "settings for time and date" setup
Public bug reported: this report is (probably) for either the ntp or the ntpdate package (since those are the only two ntp related packages installed on my system). this problem has been around for several iterations of ubuntu and is still present in the Gutsy incarnation. when using "settings for time and date" (Swedish: "Inställningar för tid och datum") setup in the control panel. There is only one Swedish entry present, and any single one of our official servers. The official servers are well funded as our government firmly believes that it is a fundamental part of a modern it infrastructure and a modern society. The Swedish government is running, a network of time servers strategically placed at larger network nodes in our country, so it would make very much sense for any Swedish user to connect to the closest (network wise) server of those. In Stockholm we have: ntp1.sth.netnod.se ntp2.sth.netnod.se In Gothenburg: ntp1.gbg.netnod.se ntp2.gbg.netnod.se Malmö: ntp1.mmo.netnod.se ntp2.mmo.netnod.se For those who are anxious to get right to the source of the official Swedish time, they can connect to Statens Provnings och Forsknings- institut (SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden). They are running the official Swedish time keeping facilities in Borås. ntp1.sp.se ntp2.sp.se ntp3.sp.se With the above mentioned list, all Swedish (and probably many foreign users) would be able to connect to a set of well managed stratum 1 servers. time1.stupi.se is of course Swedish but it is run by a private company, that (at least) have had problems with one of the larger Swedish ISP:s which made them less than eager to help requests from that ISP. Therefore it is important to provide alternatives that can be used by all Swedish citizens with good result. For historical reasons, it may still make sense to keep the server at stupi.se, they where in fact first with providing this kind of service in Sweden and they have invested both time and money in this for years so they ought to get credit for their efforts. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- no official Swedish time server mentioned in list of available time servers in "settings for time and date" setup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/157988 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have a similar problem that has buggered me for the last few weeks which I have now investigated a little bit more: ubuntu-desktop, kubuntu-desktop, and xubuntu-desktop all depends on slocate. ubuntu-minimal is depending on findutils. as a normal user probably likes to have one of the above mentioned desktop packages installed, they are flagged for slocate regardless of the fact that ubuntu-minimal, which is required to make a bootable system in a clean ubuntu fashion, rather uses findutils. It may well be that I may be able to uninstall findutils without any problems, but as I am using my Gutsy system as my main computer I do not want to try. -- As to my configuration: I did install a gutsy ubuntu server in July and then I added usefull packages (including ubuntu-desktop). [Bug 133422] Re: After update display is shifted to the left
As far as the description goes, this is probably not a bug. Different operating systems, video adapters, and video drivers all comes with their unique set of timing caracteristics. To releive end users from constantly having to fiddle the controls of their video monitors, the leading manufacturers has been trying to sell us monitors with automatic control. Unfortunately this is rarely 100% automatic so most people will sometimes, when upgrading or when changing video settings, have to go into the menus for controlling their video monitor. So if you if you go into the monitor menu on your video screen you will have plenty of oportunity to adjust your screen to suit even the latest update of your desktop. [Bug 140010] Re: cursor disappears frequently in latest Gutsy build
thank you Scott for your suggestions regarding LDM. Actually I have submitted logfiles and error messages for this problem in another bug report; unfortunately I am not friendly enough with the launchpad to figure out where, at least it is nowhere to be seen on my page with bugs that i have reported upon right now. As I am not feeling well and since this day will turn out very busy, I will not be able to figure out where until tonight. Anyway, from the helpful comments and suggestions from Oliver on that case, I figured that there was not much I could do beside setting up a development environment and start figuring out what was happening myself; which could be a splendid idea ;-) So, yes, there should be reports and information on that case somewhere deep inside the stomach of Launchpad and I am to tired to figure out where right now. i have tried ldm with several of my thin clients with no luck, with Gutsy, ldm on feisty worked like charm :-) i shall try to run more without kvm and report back, but beware: as the computers are more or less unused while I am out working, they may be "behind" screen saver all day. my personal theory is that this problem happens either around when the screensaver kicks in or when the screen gets put into power save mode. during weekdays that will only happen a few times every day, during weekends it will happen all the time. so is there anybody brave or knowledgeable enough to have any suggestion on some tests that i can do to find information needed for turning this into something that can be used to improve the quality of both xorg and ubuntu? [Bug 131983] Re: [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io
regardless if you run out of batteries or not, it is, at least in most cases, stupid to let a background daemon take most of the computers internal bandwidth. I am running this on my desktop machine and it is almost useless for several hours after logging into the system. As I sure am a geek and I know how to kick my way around my system with a few well deserved kill commands this is certainly not a big issue for me. But for any of those ordinary people that Ubuntu is supposed to serve, this is a big put of. hence this should not be considered a laptop only issue but a general usability issue for ubuntu regardless if you are running it in a server room, on a desktop or on the go. -- [gutsy] trackerd kills disk io https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/131983 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 132320 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132320 no matter if it is beneficial or not having this trackerd track down every single bit in every file fast or not, it is definitely not good for anybody if your systems feels like you have upgraded to an 1 MHz 6502 CPU instead of that multi GHz monster that is actually juggling all your computrons. On top of that, not everybody has their systems designed for extended period extreme CPU-loads. That can become a cooling disaster regardless if you are on batteries or not. if we want to stay competitive with other systems, we must provide an user experience where the system is responsive for interactive use, and then it is very much counter productive having daemons munching up every last cycle. on my computer the trackerd blasts on at full cpu load for hours. having a work tool that is not ready or usable for any work until it is time for the user to go home is not clever :-( btw has anybody heard about the efforts of reducing the over all power consumption of the computers on this planet? that effort has obviously not been part of the design considerations of this greedy little power-tool. -- trackerd eating CPU and memory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/130817 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

the best solution would be an inconsistent solution: If and only if the user had selected any text, copy that text, if no text is selected, pretend it is a normal console app and abort. [Bug 140010] cursor disappears frequently in latest Gutsy build
Public bug reported: after doing the latest upgrade (to v 5.0.30 of ltsp-client) I have been forced to reboot my primary workstation (a hp 5x00 running ltsp) due to the fact that when I leave the terminal the cursor disappears without comming back when I start moving about with the mouse. Since I am running usb keyboard and mice through a kvm- switch I have observed that the problem seems easier to reproduce if I switch to another computer long enough for the screen saver to kick in (blank screen, nothing fancy) and then switch back to the ltsp client box. [Bug 138200] Re: ltsp ldm does not start properly
As you might have already seen from my eager writings on defect #138089, I do use "ltsp-build-client" from a clean startingpoint. Thanks for mentioning the documentation for ltsp without nfs. So I have 4 question: 1. will it help you in any way if I use the CONFIGURE_X=False and send you the messages from running that? 2. is there anything that I did not mention in my latest postings on #138089 that could help you figuring out what is going wrong. 3. could this be something hardware related? I am doing most of my testing on an Hp 5x00 something with a Crusoe inside, but we have other thin machines as well. since I got the message of using CONFIGURE_X=True I finally to the plunge and went looking for some problems again. [Bug 37350] Re: Pressing power button unlocks locked screensaver
still, if somebody for administrative reasons, needs to shut down a computer, reasons ranging from planned power interruptions to office relocations, it still is nice being able to let somebody shut down the computer in an orderly fashion. Hence, the problem was not that a shutdown option was presented when pressing the power button, the problem was that flicking the power switch could give somebody full access to the locked desktop. It may be that I grew up when power buttons actually had something to do with the power supply of the device at hand, but Ubuntu is for "ordinary people" and many such people still think that the reason for the power switch is switching the power in a similar way as their light switch is working. To cater for this conservative mindset, a good workaround would be skipping the questions about if logout etc and instead present a simple shutdown yes/no question. OK, that adds complexity compared to silently bring the machine to a halt, but it may still save some trouble when the button is pressed by accident. -- Pressing power button unlocks locked screensaver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/37350 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 65010] Re: Xubuntu desktop manager not LTSP aware
Hi Jani, no I am not running kiosk mode, I am running a small office. But since I found this bug report while looking for something else I figured that somebody might be interested in some information 8-) Anyway, when running either gnome or kde, without any special config, they both figure out that they are running out of a thin client and refuses to provide options that could close down the server for the whole network. With xubuntu it is a different game, any user can shut down the server. Since we do not have anybody evil (or stupid) enough to shut down our server in a bad way around my place that is not a problem for me, but still it irritates me a little bit every time I log out, to have this abundance of options to chose from when I only want to log out. A slightly unrelated idea for a new feature is having shutdown and reboot buttons that works on the client after you log out. Now you will have to wait for the log out to be accomplished before you can switch of your terminal. So I did not write my previous message because of personal problems but rather because that Jérôme asked for some more input. BTW, since xfce seems to be quite easy to configure, I doubt it would be a great trouble for a manager of a kiosk setup to disable the "evil" logout options. Though I have not tried setting up this particular thing so I may be wrong, at least there are settings in the control panel ("sessions and startup") for this purpose and there should be config files for the same features as well. [Bug 138089] Re: ltsp startx option does not work since X.org is not configured
Well, to be able to use the startx option I actually have to edit my lts.conf, otherwise I would never have come to the point where the starting of X.org fails because there is no valid configuration. Accordingly, I am enclosing my config file. Another point of interest, is that if I do log on manually, or using one of the shells opened by statements like: 'SCREEN_02=shell', then I can run configure-x.sh manually before running the startx script and everything works like charm. Dear Olivier, as I am a very happy end user of the result of your effort making LTSP a viable option for everyday usage, I have taken the step upgrading to gutsy. If you need help in testing things I am more than willing, but, as per how things are right now, ltsp is in an unusable state on our machines right now. My first generation iMac has 160 MB of RAM which may be on the narrow end of the scale. It also happens to have an 80 GB disc which on the other hand probably is on the larger end. 1. the live CD will not both into "live mode", you will see the splash screens jump by for a long time but then nothing happens. I have not tried all alternatives at the boot prompt, but I can not figure out why something labeled "powerpc64" would work so those alternatives has not been tested. 2. the alternate cd works much better. For some strange reason it will not get the ip-address by DHCP, if that means that networking is not working or if it is only something minor I do not know. Regardless if I chose Swedish (my native language) or English the installation runs smoth until it is time to boot from the hard drive. Either it is some partitioning problem regarded to open firmware, or something is not working as it should. Allthough I have used boot programs from a large set of hardware vendors since the early 1980s, I do not feel at home in the Apple version. Not that it is worse than anything else, but still it is appalling that a manufacturer with such a high self esteem regarding user friendliness is unable to come up with something where you at least can list the possible boot-devices. So if anybody, better suited to configure mac:s can tell me what to do I will test whatever is suggested to me; otherwise I would suggest that this is not working. As far as I can see the bug is still there, and zip is showing the exact same behaviour as unzip so maybe we should file yet another bug or stick to killing 2 birds with one stone. [Bug 35611] Re: Installer detects Finnish keyboard instead of Swedish
Having Ubuntu autodetect the "Finnish" layout when using a Swedish keyboard may be good if you consider the Finnish origin of Linux. On the other hand, Linus Torvalds himself is speaking Swedish as his mother tounge and there are twice as many people speaking Swedish as those who speak Finnish. Hence it is most likely that the user who wants his Swedish/Finnish keyboard autodetected also is speaking Swedish rather than Finnish. >From a technical perspective it would not only make sense but also make life easier if we merged the two layouts into one and explained the reason for the end user whenever the keyboard layout issue is configured or displayed. -- Installer detects Finnish keyboard instead of Swedish https://launchpad.net/bugs/35611 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 15104] Re: Keyboard layout problems
Modern Linux distros, like Ubuntu, tend to prefer UTF-8 character endcoding and legacy operating systems like Windows and Palm OS tend to go for ISO 8859-1 character encoding when using a Swedish locale. Some Ubuntu applications convert well (Open Office.Org, and some usually do not, like Abi Word). Unfortunately this is not a keyboard problem. Otherwise it would be an easy fix changing the layout file. Unfortunately there are many applications to be tested for character encoding awareness and conversion. Regarding the comment above on the Finnish layout: the keyboards shipped to both Sweden and Finnland do share the exact same physical layout and when using Windows, the keyboard driver works the same as well. Unfortunately, Linux distros has not usually picked this up and they comonly provide 2 different layouts for, respectively, Finnland and Sweden where the later variant usually do not support any easy way for entering common UNIX control characters like | and \ which makes life at the command prompt painfull when doing things in Swedish. -- Keyboard layout problems https://launchpad.net/bugs/15104 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 35611] Re: Installer detects Finnish keyboard instead of Swedish
Well physically, Swedish and Finnish keyboards are exactly the same. Many vendors do label their keyboards for the Swedish market as "Swe/Fi", "Swedish/Finnish" or something similar. Other do have different labels even though the actual keyboards do not differ. Look at IBM for instance, a well reputed hardware vendor: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/globalization/topics/keyboards/KBD285.jsp http://www-306.ibm.com/software/globalization/topics/keyboards/KBD153.jsp Actually Swedish is one of the official languages of Finnland and Sweden and Finnland have historical bonds that may not remind all of a happy past but that still may make sense for keeping the same physical layout for those two countries. And since many memories are quite bad having two names also is a sensible solution, even if it stirs up confusion for computer users. -- Installer detects Finnish keyboard instead of Swedish https://launchpad.net/bugs/35611 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Well I get a crash report from the xfce4-panel but, actually my thin client locks up; mouse pointer gets stuck, keyboard does not work etc; though I can log on through SSH so at least the Linux kernel is working. With earlier versions (and some specific options in lts.conf) somtimes the desktop got stuck on either logging on or out. But then replugging the keyboard and mouse solved the problem. Then the permanent fix was hacking the lts.conf. This new problem has appeared after the upgrade to Edgy. Even though I have been fiddling my lts.conf vigorously I have not been able to find another fix than avoiding logging out. Once this logout missfeature was so powerful that it wiped my entire XFCE configuration so that I was not able to log on again. So I am quite happily using my terminal without logging out since then. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: language-pack-sv please forgive me, I may be barking at the wrong three (package): language-pack-sv and language-pack-sv-base looks like the obvious choices to me; but this may be something hidden deep in the soul of linux: Due to national pride all common operating systems has chosen to have two different keyboard layouts for respectively Sweden and Finland even though there are no difference in the physical layout of the keyboards delivered to this two different countries. With Linux, regardless of distribution, for at least the last 10 years, the Swedish layout has not been working properly, neither on the console or in X. The easy workaround has been chosing "Finnish" instead. But since Ubuntu is labeled "for human beings" I tried being human yesterday (when installing edgy eft on the third machine using edgy in my home) and chosed Swedish, and it still does not work properly. On Swedish keyboards (and Finnish since they are the same), the alt key on the right side of the space-bar is labeled "Alt Gr" and is used to get "special characters" like: < > | Unfortunately, the Swedish layout is lacking this facility which renders it useless when interacting with a comman prompt, or for doing programming in most programming languages. I do not have the slightest clue how normal persons do to solve this problem, most people I know of are either using the Finnish layout or the US; in the later case they are of course suffering problem with entering our national characters ÅÄÖ. I am willing to help out describing exactly what is expected from a Swedish keyboard, but the obvious fix is to copy the finnish layout files for the console and for X and get rid of the problem without any work. [Bug 67387] Re: Client keymap doesn't match server's one
Yes, in most cases we got the same keyboard layout on all workstations at the same site. Hence that should be a reasonable default. My first post was only to point out the fact that all documentation that I have found on this issue (regardless of LTSP version) has stated that us keyboard should be default. Since neither ltsp on dapper or edgy has been working right out of the box for me, I am very much in favour of providing a lts.conf file with -if not all, at least most- settings that has been chosen as default values. Most distros try to provide well commented config.- files with most applications even in the cases when all the default values are already built in; this is really makes linux system administration much more user friendly than windows, where most everything interesting is hidden in a hay-stack called the registry. -- Client keymap doesn't match server's one https://launchpad.net/bugs/67387 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This keymap problem may be cumbersome to work out for many users, but it still is an intended behaviour and not a bug. When setting up the clients (/opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf if you are running on an x86 processor), you are supposed to declare which keyboard layout you want on the clients. Since this baby is a mac using a G3 Power PC, I am using a PPC edition of UBUNTU, no doubt about that. 1. put CD in tray 2. push C key and start system 3. the mac then tries to load something from the CD and continues to spin the drive for 20-30 seconds after that the system stops, no text, no image - just a blank screen. If I instead chose to boot into Open Firmware and tries to boot from the CD manually, the system dies the same way as when using the C-key. I did not report this problem at first because I thought that this 8-9 year old cd-drive is not so compatible with modern CD-R media which is a common problem with older drives. But now Canonical has been as kind as to provide me with factory made CD:s which unfortunately shows the same problem. With the old factory made Warty CD:s the system started nicely, but something went wrong during the installation and the system died on the first boot from the hard disk. But at that time at least the CD did boot nicely into the setup program. Unfortunately, my four year old son had a go on the old CD which is no longer operational so I can not use that if you want me to test something with that one. I can download a warty .iso if you want me to. Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions or make me suggestions on how to solve this problem. I am also willing to try different procedures and softwares and report back if that can help anyone better figure out how to fix this problem. There are loads of cute imac:s with a much higher potential than beeing only used for land-fills :-) /rolle ** Affects: Ubuntu Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- install CD does not boot on tray loading rev-a imac 233MHz https://launchpad.net/bugs/54122 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
