[Bug 676351] Re: Unable to burn data DVD

2011-01-10 Thread Ron_
Jeremy,
Please do not close this bug. I have been watching the notices, and it was not
supposed to expire for another couple of weeks. In the past few days, I posted
notices in other places, hoping to drive others to this location.

[Bug 581925] Re: cdrom_id: Does not recognize reblanked DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM

2011-01-09 Thread Ron_
If there are any Karmic users still subscribed to this bug, I could use
some help over at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/676351 . As far
as I can tell, it differs from this bug only by Ubuntu release. Karmic
is supposed to be supported for another 10 months.

[Bug 676351] Re: Unable to burn data DVD

2010-12-01 Thread Ron_
Hi, Jeremy. Thanks for responding.

I am a rank amateur using a single mission-critical machine, so forgive
me if I am a bit nervous about this. Since this bug was already fixed
in Lucid (#405544) and reported in Maverick (#669286), don't we already
know the answer to whether it exists upstream?

[Bug 346289] Re: Choppy Flash playback in full screen.

2010-11-21 Thread Ron_
This bug has been present on my Karmic amd_64 setup from the start. It
seems to affect most NYTimes videos, though most YouTube videos come out
clean.

I have tried all of the above fixes without success. I like some of the
features of Compiz (e.g., Place Windows), and since disablng it does not
improve my videos, I left it on.

This is probably an underpowered machine (e.g., GeForce 6150SE nForce
430, nVidia drivers), but since I use Compiz, I apparently can't take
advantage of better hardware acceleration anyway.

I developed a crude workaround using Greasemonkey that enlarges the
NYTimes' embedded Flash player by about 250%. (Find it at
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/90955 .) This gives me flicker-
free, high quality video at an acceptable size.

Comparing the results from my work-around to full-screen, I notice that
I get the most flickering not during the fastest motion, but during the
most sound. Perhaps this will suggest a possible solution strategy.

[Bug 676351] Re: Unable to burn data DVD

2010-11-16 Thread Ron_
As reported 12/17/2009:
Add me to the list of folks who have trashed media trying up-to-date versions
of both Brasero and GnomeBaker on Ubuntu 9.10. I have a new low-end HP desktop
with a 16x DVD-/+RW drive, and I am using DVD-R media. I am just trying to burn
1 large (4GB) file to a data DVD. I have tried 16x and 4x. The message I get
from both apps is:

:-[ wr...@lba=e0h failed with SK=5h/INVALID ADDRESS FOR WRITE]: Invalid argument
:-[ write failed: Invalid argument

btw... As a newbie, I had no idea before now that the information in the
Bug Description is generated by a simple command called apport (also
known as ubuntu-bug.) Now I guess I wonder why each of us was not
prompted to submit this level of detail when we clicked Does this bug
affect you? Also, a link to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/HowToTriage
might reduce the opacity of the Triage process (and hence the
frustration) of beginners.

Thanks.

[Bug 581925] Re: cdrom_id: Does not recognize reblanked DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM

2010-10-29 Thread Ron_
Now that a fix has been released for Lucid, please consider issuing a
release for those of us still using Karmic. This bug was first reported
over a year ago. That is the amount of time that I have been soldiering
on with a crippled system. I hope you can understand that, for a
beginner, upgrading from a crippled OS seems to be just an opportunity
to exchange one set of problems for another. Karmic is supposedly
still supprted, but the amount of time that has elapsed since this
problem was reported has caused me to mistrust the level of commitment
to that support -- or for that matter, to the support of subsequent
releases. I've got to have a stable, fully functional system before I
can consider an upgrade.

It looks like there might be a solution for this problem over at

of who are less technically proficient, could someone please provide a
cookbook to applying this patch to Ubuntu 9.10 (amd64)?

[Bug 562831] Re: clamav blocked by apparmor in firefox (using fireclam plugin)

2010-09-21 Thread Ron_
Following #1, I did:
  sudo gedit /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox

adding the line (including the comma):
  /usr/bin/clamscan Ux,

This did solve it for me. Thanks.

[Bug 562831] Re: clamav blocked by apparmor in firefox (using fireclam plugin)

2010-09-20 Thread Ron_
From https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/642008 ...

I am using Firefox 3.6.10 with Fireclam0.6.5 add-on under Ubuntu 9.10
(64 bit) . I've got ClamAV Antivirus engine 0.96.1, GUI version 4.15,
and my Virus definitions are up-to-date.

In the past month, Synaptic has upgraded my Firefox twice -- first to
3.6.9, then to 3.6.10. Following the most recent upgrade, it seems that
every download using Firefox produces a message that the file is
infected.

Running sudo aa-complain /etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.firefox , I get the
following in my messages log:

[Bug 351528] Re: notify-osd won't start (notify-osd:15956): GConf-CRITICAL error

2010-08-31 Thread Ron_
@Mirco,

I'm running Karmic. Following your instructions in #12, I got the patch.
At the terminal, I issued the command patch -p2 16_use-
synchronous_notifications.patch from ~/gnome-settings-
daemon-2.28.1/debian/patches. The command failed because it didn't
know which file to patch.

My greater concern is that I don't want to screw up my other sound
settings. (My webcam microphone required a patch of its own.) I don't
see gnome-settings-daemon-2.28 anywhere else on my system. It is all
gnome-settings-daemon-2.0.

Have you any advice?

[Bug 400485] Re: Empathy sounds not in default ubuntu theme

2010-08-31 Thread Ron_
No sounds in Karmic. Same as #37 and #44, I installed freedesktop and
activated Default preference.

Re: #43. Karmic was my first (and last) Ubuntu install. Since mid-2009, a
pattern has emerged:
a) Release software filled with regressive bugs.
b) Trivialize complaints.
c) Mark bugs as too old to matter.
Theoretically, this could go on indefinitely, without ever adequately
prioritizing users' concerns. This is no way to build market share, and the
market is noticing.

[Bug 551155] Re: Beagle no longer indexes browser history

2010-04-30 Thread Ron_
The Beagle community (including Novell) seems unable to offer any
further support. Also, I found no evidence that Canonical has changed
its support for desktop search apps since introducing Ubuntu 10.04
yesterday. So after reviewing all of the information i could find
comparing strengths and weaknesses, I shut down the Beagle daemon and
installed Recoll.

So far, I am very pleased. Documentation is good. Installation was a
snap. Minor customization (e.g., setting a parm to enable Recoll to
work with the Firefox Beagle add-on) was easy. The whole conversion was
very uneventful. Creation of the initial index was reasonably fast
(under an hour for about 250,000 files.) The GUI is clean and clear.
All of the stuff that Beagle caught was there. And all of the stuff
that Beagle missed -- like Thunderbird message content -- showed up.

Compare Recoll news...

[Bug 221073] Re: Beagle does not index Thunderbird mails

2010-01-04 Thread Ron_
I've done a little more digging, in case anyone else cares to jump in.
Source code for the Beagle Thunderbird backend is here:
http://vbox4.gnome.org/browse/beagle/tree/beagled/ThunderbirdQueryable/ThunderbirdQueryable.cs?h
=beagle-tbird-soc07 . The action seems to be around lines 343-347
(called from lines 381-383 and carried forward at line 398.) A partial
explanation of what is going on can be found here: http://beagle-
project.org/Filter_Tutorial . (See the section DoOpen() and
DoClose().) As I understand it, the file is just a big buffer. Mail
messages are laid end-to-end in the file, so the only way to retrieve a
particular message is to specify its offset postion and its size. This
stream is handed off to parser.ConstructMessage, etc.

I hoping that some reader will have enough experience to spot a
potential weakness with respect to Ubuntu 9.X, AMD64, etc.

[Bug 221073] Re: Beagle does not index Thunderbird mails

2009-12-29 Thread Ron_
I've recently tried a couple of things, unsuccessfully, to fix the problem on
my own. Make no mistake, this is flailing. I have little understanding of what
I am doing, but in the absence of expert support
1) I downloaded an older copy of the Thunderbird-Beagle add-on, version 0.1.2 .
Same problem. Reinstall thunderbird-beagle 0.1.3.
2) I edited the contents of
/usr/lib/thunderbird/extensions/{b656ef18-fd76-45e6-95cc-8043f26361e7}/chrome/beagle.jar
 in the following way:
a) sudo file-roller
b) open the file
c) gedit beagleIndexer.js
d) Based on a discussion I read (
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=530632 ), describing a possible fix
to the extension for Thunderbird 3 [Note: I am still using TB 2], I replaced 3
instances of path.unixStyleFilePath with nativePath . Save. Okay to update
the jar. Close.
e) This produced Exceptions in the Beagle Log that I did not used to have.
Basically, it broke the Beagle backend. Reinstall thunderbird-beagle to undo
the changes to beagleIndexer.js .
f) What we learn from this experience is that Beagle's Index Helper process
apparently runs Mono to re-open Thunderbird's folders and read the contents. If
this is so, the locus of the main problem (i.e., not indexing e-mail content)
is the Beagle backend rather than the Thunderbird add-on. That is a body of
code that I dare not touch. It's too bad, though, that the add-on does not just
dump the e-mail content while it has the chance.

[Bug 221073] Re: Beagle does not index Thunderbird mails

2009-12-18 Thread Ron_
I've still got a fairly serious problem with Beagle indexing only email
headers and not content. I've got Thunderbird 2.0.0.23, Beagle 0.3.9
and Beagle-Indexer (TB Addon) 0.1.3. Please help.

[Bug 405544] Re: Unable to burn CD or DVD with 2.6.31 kernel

2009-12-17 Thread Ron_
I agree that fixing this bug should be of high importance, since it is
currently impossibly to burn backup DVDs. See a parallel thread here:
http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1327809page=2 .

Add me to the list of folks who have trashed media trying up-to-date
versions of both Brasero and GnomeBaker on Ubuntu 9.10. I have a new
low-end HP desktop with a 16x DVD-/+RW drive, and I am using DVD-R
media. I am just trying to burn 1 large (4GB) file to a data DVD. I have
tried 16x and 4x. The message I get from both apps is:

:-[ wr...@lba=e0h failed with SK=5h/INVALID ADDRESS FOR WRITE]: Invalid argument
:-[ write failed: Invalid argument

[Bug 221073] Re: Beagle does not index Thunderbird mails

2009-12-09 Thread Ron_
Izzy, when you say set it to index aggressively, do you mean Indexing
Speed = very fast or very slow?

My TB backend does seem to be indexing my emails, but very little
content -- possibly only header information.
