[Bug 892551] Re: Trackpad mouse pointer freezes shortly after login; requires module unload/reload

2013-08-18 Thread Ryan Reich
Thanks for following up on this. Actually, it seemed to stop being a
problem in the next release, so you may as well mark it fixed.

[Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops

2012-09-27 Thread Ryan Reich
I am not using Ubuntu but I suffer this problem with my Asus Zenbook
Prime (wireless is Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6235 (rev 24)). In short,
either of the following two actions fix the network slowness.

1. Disable 11n capability via `modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1` or the
kernel boot option `iwlwifi.11n_disable=1`, depending on whether iwlwifi
is a module or not. Everything else works great but you have to use
11g.

2. Disable power management via `iwconfig wlan0 power off` or the
appropriate setting in a power management tool, laptop-mode tools, etc.
With this option there are still many Tx excessive retries but 11n works
otherwise.

2012-09-27 Thread Ryan Reich
In response to Georg's above comment, I also tested the options he
gives; neither bt_coex_active=0 nor sw_ctypto=1 does anything to help
the slow connection. However, `iwconfig wlan0 power off/on` is
effectively a work/don't work switch for 11n capability.

[Bug 943625] Re: [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id

2012-05-01 Thread Ryan Reich
I also get this bug (Asus EeePC 1005HA) in 12.04 when resuming from
suspend. I also have a related problem: I usually have an enlarged
(1024x768) framebuffer and panning enabled through xrandr, and these
disappear after resuming. This message is the only video-related error
reported in syslog, so I assume they are connected. I also see the
redraw that reply #3 describes; in fact, if I try (through a script in
/etc/pm/sleep.d) to re-enable panning, if it runs before the redraw,
then the panning is negated again; I have to sleep for a few seconds
until it passes. This makes me think that the redraw is actually the
framebuffer being restarted, if unsuccessfully.

[Bug 892551] Re: Trackpad mouse pointer freezes shortly after login; requires module unload/reload

2011-12-08 Thread Ryan Reich
This is an xorg driver issue: I have downgraded to the version of
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics used in Natty, where I did not have this
problem, and it has gone away. (That version is 1.3.99+git20110116
.0e27ce3a-0ubuntu12; presumably I was using 1.4.1-1ubuntu2 before.)
Therefore, the bug is in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics-1.4.1, not the
kernel.

What I mean by shading is that the window title is hidden, the title
bar itself vanishes and is replaced with the wallpaper pattern, and all
the items in the system tray are muted. This is a partial instance of
the correct Win button behavior, which I can get by pressing that key
when the desktop is visible. See attached.

[Bug 362075] Re: session logout after suspend

2011-11-22 Thread Ryan Reich
I am attaching a portion of my kernel log from a recent desktop crash
during resume. I want to point out particularly the events at the
following times: [33221.164300] [33221.269629] [33222.874647],
reflecting segfaults in bamfdaemon, compiz, and gnome-settings, all of
them leading back to a location in libgdk-3.so.0.200.0. These are the
only errors that show up in the course of the resume (in the kernel log,
which is the only place I know where to look), so I assume they are
relevant. They do *not* show up in a normal resume (next attachment).

[Bug 892551] Re: Trackpad mouse pointer freezes shortly after login; requires module unload/reload

2011-11-21 Thread Ryan Reich
I tested this with the kernel 3.2.0-030200rc2-generic, and I got the
pointer freeze just the same. So either it's still broken upstream, or
it's not a kernel bug. (You will have to decide which; I can't.)

[Bug 362075] Re: session logout after suspend

2011-11-19 Thread Ryan Reich
I get this bug in Oneiric. It is not triggered by *any* running
application; in fact, I can reproduce it with excellent probability by:

1. Logging in.
2. Once login is complete, closing my laptop lid (which suspends).
3. Immediately waking up the laptop.
4. If that didn't cause the bug, suspend and try again.

The result is that when the screen lights up, I will see my desktop
background (not the application switcher or title bar/system tray) for a
moment, then the desktop will crash and I will end up back at the login
screen in a second or two. It is not a *logout* so much as a *desktop
crash*; all programs are terminated instantly.

[Bug 892551] [NEW] Trackpad mouse pointer freezes shortly after login; requires module unload/reload

2011-11-19 Thread Ryan Reich
Public bug reported:

I have an Asus EeePC 1005-HA and am running Oneiric. Shortly after
every login, my mouse stops responding entirely, and can only be revived
either by logging out and back in (which is futile) or
unloading/reloading the psmouse kernel module. Steps to reproduce:

1. Log in
2. Perform normal activities for maybe five minutes, possibly only thirty
seconds.
3. The mouse will stop responding. This seems to be slightly correlated with
switching windows or Firefox tabs.

After the workaround, the mouse never freezes again until I log out and
back in. Sometimes, though, the tapping or drag-scrolling feature stops
working without the pad itself freezing, and this requires another
module cycle.

Looking at `dmesg` tells me that there are a number of diagnostics:

psmouse.c: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1

that seem to be produced at that time. I don't know if this is a kernel
bug or not; I am attaching the appropriate logs.

[Bug 892553] [NEW] Alt+tab switcher is hidden after login

2011-11-19 Thread Ryan Reich
Public bug reported:

When I first log in, if I open the wrong application first, then the
alt+tab switcher doesn't appear when I press alt+tab. It *does* switch,
however, but I can't see the list of running applications so I don't
know where it will go. Steps to reproduce:

1. Log in
2. Open firefox, terminal, or the file manager
3. Press alt+tab; it will not show anything.
4. Also, switching to the show desktop item won't necessarily show the
desktop, but simply shade the open window.
5. Also, pressing the Win (or Super) key that normally raises the application
bar will not work; it will simply shade the screen as though it had.

This can be fixed by closing everything and opening a right program.
I have found that Kile is one such (I don't know if this is KDE
related).

[Bug 809060] Re: Windows stretched after setting virtual screen resolution

2011-10-27 Thread Ryan Reich
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and now this bug has a different form:
xrandr does not work _at all_. The command

xrandr --output LVDS1 --fb 1024x768 --panning 1024x768

(on my 1024x600 netbook screen) does not create a larger desktop or
enable panning. The only effect is that, when my mouse pushes the
bottom edge of the screen, it pans infinitesimally -- maybe a few
pixels. (Pushing the top edge will pan back.) This is not affected
by making any changes in autodetection, explicit specification of
output, or preferred outputs, under General options in the Compiz
configuration tool.

[Bug 809060] Re: Windows stretched after setting virtual screen resolution

2011-10-14 Thread Ryan Reich
Jonathan, have you tried adding a --fb directive to the xrandr command?
For example,

xrandr --output LVDS1 --fb 1024x768 --panning 0x768

(note the 0, as I commented in my report). If you don't, then the
virtual screen size should be too small to pan. Could you try that and
post again whether you experience the bug I reported?
