[Bug 1952001] [NEW] cloud-init 21.3-1-g6803368d-0ubuntu1~18.04.4 recreated SSH host keys on Azure VMs

2021-11-23 Thread Scott Talbert
Public bug reported:

On multiple Azure VMs running Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS, when cloud-init
21.3-1-g6803368d-0ubuntu1~18.04.4 was installed, it re-created the SSH
host keys. This caused an obvious security scare that our machines had
been hacked.

2021-09-21 Thread Scott Talbert
This error message is reporting that the wx3.0-i18n and wx3.1-i18n
packages both contain the file
/usr/share/locale/ca/LC_MESSAGES/wxstd.mo. The wx3.1-i18n package is
not part of Ubuntu, so you'll need to report this problem to wherever
you obtained that package (perhaps a PPA?).

2019-09-13 Thread Scott Talbert
So, I messed up the bisection earlier, probably due to not being careful
with the kernel configuration. The actual bad commit is
475fb4e8b2fd1d7b406ff3a7d21bc89a1e6f which makes a lot more sense.
I reported the problem upstream and a fix is in-process.

[Bug 1842965] Re: Unable to boot kernel 4.15 on MacPro5,1 (mid 2012)

2019-09-10 Thread Scott Talbert
OK, so I bisected the kernel versions by using the mainline builds. The
first kernel where this breaks is v4.8-rc1 (v4.7.x works fine).

I think did a git bisection and found that this commit is the bad one:
27b79027bc112a63ad4004eb83c6acacae08a0de

This seems a bit strange to me, though, as this is a merge commit and
both of the two parent commits work. Investigating further.

[Bug 1834765] Re: wxwidgets3.0-3.0.4.orig does not make

2019-07-29 Thread Scott Talbert
That isn't how to build wxWidgets from source. You have to configure it
first. If you really want to build it from source, you should probably
follow the upstream instructions:

https://github.com/wxWidgets/wxWidgets/blob/master/docs/gtk/install.md

2018-11-12 Thread Scott Talbert
You are using a third-party repository to install another version of
wxWidgets. You will have to get help from the maintainers of that
repository. This doesn't appear to be a bug in the Ubuntu wxWidgets
package.

[Bug 1770742] Re: Cannot find -lGL

2018-06-29 Thread Scott Talbert
@Timo - it isn't completely clear, but it sounds like the original
reporter had libglvnd-dev installed. My suspicion on this is that the
proprietary driver wiped out the link somehow, but I couldn't reproduce
that when I tried.

Setting this to fix released as wxwidgets3.0 3.0.4+dfsg-3 with the

seem to have stopped in March so this seems to confirm it.

[Bug 1755025] Re: add libgtk-3-dev to python-wxgtk-media3.0 build-deps

2018-03-27 Thread Scott Talbert
python-wxgtk-media3.0 is wxPython Classic, not Phoenix and is built
against GTK+ 2, not GTK+ 3 in Debian/Ubuntu. That's why libgtk-3-dev is
not a build dependency.

BTW, wxPython Phoenix will be included in Bionic.

[Bug 1636333] [NEW] Squirrelmail - missing Subject/Body on some messages in 16.04

2016-10-24 Thread Scott Talbert
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 16.04, Squirrelmail has a regression from 14.04. Certain
messages are missing the subject or message body. Investigation reveals
that this is due to the removal of the /e modifier in preg_replace in
PHP 7. The server logs show numerous error messages similar to the
following:

[Mon Oct 24 19:40:36.248894 2016] [:error] [pid 4699] [client
AAA.BBB.CCC.DDD:12345] PHP Warning: preg_replace(): The /e modifier is
no longer supported, use preg_replace_callback instead in
/usr/share/squirrelmail/functions/decode/utf_8.php on line 87, referer:
xyz

Upstream has resolved this issue:
https://sourceforge.net/p/squirrelmail/code/14359/

After applying the patch in 14359 (plus the trivial 14347 which is
necessary to make 14359 apply cleanly), the problems go away.

PPA with the patches applied: https://launchpad.net/~swt-
techie/+archive/ubuntu/squirrelmail

[Bug 1545586] Re: regression: python3-pytest doesn't contain pytest module

2016-02-16 Thread Scott Talbert
I got bit by this too - a package I maintain in Debian failed to build
in Xenial.

Now that pytest has been fixed, is there a way to force the Ubuntu
builders to try rebuilding my package for Xenial, or is the only way to
bump the package revision?

[Bug 1544396] [NEW] python3-pytest in xenial appears to be missing files

2016-02-10 Thread Scott Talbert
Public bug reported:

I was initially looking at why a recently synced version of the suds
package from Debian failed to build in Xenial [1]. It appears to be a
problem with running the Python 3 tests with pytest:

I: pybuild base:184: cd '/«PKGBUILDDIR»/.pybuild/pythonX.Y_3.5/build';
python3.5 -m pytest tests
/usr/bin/python3.5: No module named pytest

Looking further, I grabbed the python3-pytest deb from Xenial, this is the
entire contents:
talbert@bear:~$ dpkg --contents python3-pytest_2.8.7-1_all.deb

It looks like the package is missing a lot of files.

[Bug 1068884] Re: ddclient unusable with FreeDNS due to missing libdigest-sha1-perl

2014-12-08 Thread Scott Talbert
** Description changed:

- When I tried to set up ddclient to access an afraid.org host in quantal,
- I got an error: it says it needs libdigest-sha1-perl; this package has
- not been shipped since oneiric.
+ [Impact]
+ The current ddclient package found in Trusty and Utopic is unusable with
FreeDNS (one of the popular free dynamic DNS sites) due to a missing dependency
(libdigest-sha1-perl). The patch (cherry-picked from upstream) enables
ddclient to correctly locate this dependency.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ - Install the ddclient package on Trusty or Utopic
+ - Use a ddclient.conf with content similar to the following:
+ daemon=1h
+ ssl=yes
+ protocol=freedns
+ use=web
+ server=freedns.afraid.org
+ login=username
+ password='password'
+ hostname
+ - Observe that ddclient successfully connects up to FreeDNS and updates the
IP address.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Generally limited as the patch only touches code that is used for FreeDNS.
+
+ [Original description]
+ When I tried to set up ddclient to access an afraid.org host in quantal, I
got an error: it says it needs libdigest-sha1-perl; this package has not been
shipped since oneiric.

Re: [Bug 1372004] Re: Update to Concordance 1.1

2014-09-22 Thread Scott Talbert
On Mon, 22 Sep 2014, Roland McIntosh wrote:

Yes, sorry, this was my first LaunchPad upgrade request, and I found a
lot of conflicting information about how to file package update
requests. Thank you for the link about StableReleaseUpdates, I
understand now the guidelines for package updates after release. A PPA
for Ubuntu 14 would be great but not necessary. I just wanted to ensure
that the update was/would be available _somewhere_ soon. So, if Ubuntu
14.10 Utopic Unicorn makes this updated package available, then I would
expect this bug to be closed as fixed in 14.10 or some such.

If I made a PPA, would you use it? If no one will use it, I probably
won't bother.

It turns out that Concordance 1.1 is already in Utopic, see:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/concordance

For this particular issue, it looks like I shall have to be patient for
when Concordance 1.1 enters a Debian stable release, after which Ubuntu
will automatically include it at some point.

Actually, Ubuntu pulls in packages from Debian *unstable* - and that is
why it is already in Utopic.

We still need to get it into Debian testing so that it will go into
Jessie, though. :) I'll have to keep pestering Matt about that.

[Bug 1372004] Re: Update to Concordance 1.1

2014-09-21 Thread Scott Talbert
Hi Roland,

Thanks for reporting! As best as I can tell, this probably doesn't meet the
requirements for a SRU (ie, they generally don't upgrade to new versions of
packages after a release has been made):
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates

Would you be interested in a PPA instead?

[Bug 1328549] [NEW] 04-merge-schema.patch causes namespace regression

2014-06-10 Thread Scott Talbert
Public bug reported:

The 04-merge-schema.patch that was introduced in Debian in 0.4.1-10
causes a regression in the handling of namespaces. As a result of this,
applications such as mhgui (part of congruity package) are broken. In
Debian, the patch was reverted in 0.4.1-13 per Debian bug:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=743415

An example of the regression (from the Debian bug report):

 url = 'http://service.gis.irisnet.be/urbis/Localization?wsdl'
 from suds.client import Client
 connexion = Client(url)
 print connexion

Result in 0.4.1-9:
Service ( Localization ) tns=http://localize;
   Prefixes (2)
 ns0 = http://localize/faults;
 ns1 = http://localize/xsd;
[...]
 Types (5):
ns1:AddressType
ns1:ExtensionType
ns0:InputMessageValidationFaultType
ns1:PointType
ns1:StreetType

i.e. two namespaces detected properly and types correctly affected to
these namespaces

Result in 0.4.1-10:

Service ( Localization ) tns=http://localize;
   Prefixes (1)
 ns0 = http://localize;
[...]
 Types (5):
AddressType
ExtensionType
InputMessageValidationFaultType
PointType
StreetType

i.e. namespaces not detected correctly, and types not affected to any
namespaces.

Please revert this patch in Trusty. Other releases appear to be non-
affected.

I think it should still be there. Did you do a 'sudo apt-get update'

When will the new version enter standard repositories?

My guess would be probably in a day or two.

They do make bug fixes in LTS releases, too, but I'm not sure if this will

[Bug 1317518] [NEW] UI Permission Problems After Upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04

2014-05-08 Thread Scott Talbert
Public bug reported:

I upgraded a machine from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04 using update-manager
-d. After upgrading, rebooting, and logging back in, I had various
user permission problems: I could not change anything in Network
Manager, update-manager told me Not authorized to perform operation
when I launched it, sound did not work, Synaptic would not launch from
Dash, etc. Looking for existing bug reports, I found bug 1240336 which
suggested to me that this might be a PAM-related problem. I then
compared the contents of /etc/pam.d to a machine that was freshly
installed with 14.04. Running pam-auth-update --force eliminated most
of the differences. Additionally, I removed the libpam-ck-connector
package (which seems to not be needed?). After this, this /etc/pam.d
matched the freshly installed system. After logging out and back in,
the problems were resolved.

Did you keep a copy of the original files, for comparison?

Unfortunately not. In my haste to make the two /etc/pam.d directories
match, I deleted the .orig files. I should have moved them. I'll build
another 12.04 machine and see if I can replicate this.

If you had modified your /etc/pam.d/common-* files locally, then there's
not really anything the pam package could do to prevent this.

To my knowledge, I hadn't modified them. I can't think of a reason why I
would have.

Additionally, I removed the libpam-ck-connector package
(which seems to not be needed?).

It's not needed on 14.04, but also should not have harmed anything. Did
you test after running pam-auth-update --force, and before removing this
 package?

Unfortunately again, no, I didn't test between the two actions.

[Bug 1193398] Re: Window Becomes Transparent When Minimizing Other Windows

2013-08-02 Thread Scott Talbert
This generally seems to happen if compiz has been running for a while,
like at least a week or so.

@chrisccoulson any chance you can verify this bug (and also #1103050) is
fixed in Precise so the SRU can be pushed out?

[Bug 1193398] [NEW] Window Becomes Transparent When Minimizing Other Windows

2013-06-21 Thread Scott Talbert
Public bug reported:

I have observed this with Ubuntu 12.04, compiz 1:0.9.7.12-0ubuntu1,
Intel graphics.

If I have several windows visible and then start minimizing some of
them, sometimes one of the still visible windows will become transparent
(ie, the title bar of the window is drawn correctly, but the contents
show what is behind the window). Clicking on the transparent window
(title bar or inside the window itself) causes it to be drawn correctly.
This doesn't happen every time, but if I have about 5-6 terminal windows
visible and then start minimizing them, the weird behavior will often
happen to one of the terminal windows.

In a slightly different variation, sometimes the misbehaving window will
shift its position down by about a title bar's height of pixels.

** Affects: compiz (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1111956] Re: BCM4313 ignores ARP broadcast packets

2013-04-10 Thread Scott Talbert
It seems that this may be related to the wireless encryption. If I
connect to an open (unencrypted) network, I can receive broadcast ARPs.
On a WPA2 network, I cannot.

@Mathieu - have these debug logs provided any useful information for
resolving this bug, or do you still need additional logs?

[Bug 1065490] Re: total system freeze

2013-03-22 Thread Scott Talbert
I am seeing a similar issue - total system freezes anywhere from once
every couple of weeks to a couple times a day. Haven't figured out any
specific way to cause the freeze, unfortunately. I have similar
hardware to you (Intel Ivy Bridge chipset and graphics [8086:0166]). I
can't recall having any freezes during February, but maybe that was just
lucky. Or, maybe the problem(s) came back with 3.2.0-39? Not sure.
Are you still seeing this issue and if so, have you found a way to cause
it?

[Bug 1065490] Re: total system freeze

2013-03-22 Thread Scott Talbert
How long have you been running 3.6 without any freezes?

As for the software I was running, I don't remember 100% for sure, but
probably at least Firefox and a bunch of gnome-terminals. Possibly also
Emacs.

Well, I just updated to 3.5 (it's in the Precise repo as 12.04.2 hardware

[Bug 1107109] Re: the last upgrade broke WiFi

2013-03-08 Thread Scott Talbert
If you have downgraded to the older version and you want to stop Update
Manager from reminding you about the newer version, you can put the
attached file in /etc/apt/preferences.d and it will pin the driver to
the older version.

[Bug 1107109] Re: the last upgrade broke WiFi

2013-03-07 Thread Scott Talbert
To get this to downgrade successfully, after doing:

sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source=5.100.82.38+bdcom-0ubuntu6

I also had to add blacklist brcmsmac to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-
bcm43.conf. Otherwise, it was using the brcmsmac driver. I'm not sure
how this worked before, maybe Jockey did something when I originally
installed bcmwl.

[Bug 1107109] Re: the last upgrade broke WiFi

2013-03-06 Thread Scott Talbert
Daniel,

Unfortunately, this driver is closed source so there is nothing Ubuntu
can do to fix it, other than rolling back the version. Only Broadcom
can fix it.

Hopefully, the open source driver is getting better so we will be able
to use that some day.
