[Bug 1958591] Re: [amdgpu] Random noise 'static' display after internal display turned off/on
Hi, I have been experiencing the same problem for several days. I have to press escape when I launch my laptop, to display its screen correctly. [Bug 1647523] Re: convert command cannot create labels
OK, I found the culprit. I first re-upgraded ghostscript. Then I downgrading imagemagick and imagemagick-common to 3.1, but it was not enough to make it work again. Then I tried downgrading libmagickwand5, libmagickcore5, libmagick++5 to 3.1, and it works! Then I re-upgraded, one package at a time, and found out that libmagickcore5 is the problem. Downgrading only libmagickcore5_6.7.7.10-6ubuntu3.3_amd64.deb to libmagickcore5_6.7.7.10-6ubuntu3.1_amd64.deb makes it work again. No shame in using Windows. Luckily for my job I get to use Linux a lot. Your .log is pretty much the same as mine. The only difference is my battery sends a message every second, while yours sends a message every 3-4 seconds. This matches with your observation that the memory leaks about 4kB every 3-4 seconds. Since our logs are so similar, I can't understand why you still have a leak and I don't anymore. Unfortunately I am not near the laptop at the moment, so I can't do a close comparison. [Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager
You are definitely running the latest libdbusmenu. Based on what you are saying, there could be another leak somewhere. Does it go away if you pull out the battery? If you look at comment #43, there are some commands you can run to get a better idea of what is going on. The sequence is: battery -> kernel -> upowerd -> dbus -> gnome-power- manager -> appindicator (Also by the way I am not the bug fixer, or a full time Ubuntu developer. Just another affected user.) -- memory leak in gnome-power-manager https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569273 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager
I can confirm this is now fixed for me in Maverick. I tested it by upgrading to Maverick Beta and the leak is gone. I did find that gnome-power-manager did not work, since it was looking for libappindicator.so.0. The workaround was: sudo ln -sf /usr/lib/libappindicator.so /usr/lib/libappindicator.so.0 but that is a different bug to this one. -- memory leak in gnome-power-manager https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569273 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid
I have made some progress. It looks like the problem is a combination of an upstream bug, and the addition of application indicators to the Ubuntu version of GPM (gnome-power-manager). First of all this bug is in gnome-power-manager, and should be moved back to that package. Upstream: I built and installed a fresh upstream copy of GPM (2.30.0), and could reproduce the issue by repeatedly right/left clicking on the battery icon. Every time I click on the ICON and extra 4kB of memory is used. It looks like the leak has been upstream for quite a while, but nobody probably noticed it because you would need to click the battery icon thousands of times for it to be a problem. Ubuntu: Ubuntu version of GPM suffers badly from this leak, because it installs a callback that regenerates the battery status every time there is a change in the battery state. Effectively meaning the left/right click happens automatically on Ubuntu systems. On my hardware this means every second the menu is regenerated with a new battery % value, leaking the old menu. So I think this could be fixed upstream. Alternatively I think I know enough now to generate a patch which would fix this on Ubuntu (albeit in a slightly hacky way). -- memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569273 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid
Hi Toby. What you are seeing is consistent with what I am seeing. I would bet that 'upowerd' is transmitting a dbus message every 20 seconds. As an experiment kill the gnome-power-manager 'killall gnome-power-manager'. Then run 'gnome-power-manager --verbose'. You will get a detailed log of activity on the command line. Every 20 seconds or so you should get some output which shows what the power manager is doing. If you are really adventurous, you can do the same on upowerd. 'sudo killall upowerd' Then sudo upowerd -v. upowerd is the program that monitors the hardware for changes, and gnome-power-manager is the one that reacts to the changes. What we need now is someone to figure out why the memory is not being freed... any volunteers ;-) -- memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569273 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid
Hi Sebastien, I use the command in comment #1: watch -n1 'grep heap -A11 /proc/$( pidof gnome-power-manager )/smaps' The heap of gnome-power-manager grows by 4kB every second (in my case). If I take out the battery from my laptop, the memory leak stops. On my machine upowerd is sending some sort of battery message over dbus roughly once per second. gnome-power-manager is calling app_indicator_set_menu() every second which uses more heap memory each time. I am not sure why the heap is not freed since I have not had time to figure how application indicators work. I suspect that gnome-power-manager has not been patched correctly to use application indicators but have no proof. [Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid
I have some new information (however I do need some help from developers, please). The chain of events is this: 1. upowerd - wakes while monitoring kernel drivers (sysfs/procfs). This can be very infrequent or very often depending on the h/w 2. upowerd - sends resulting message via dbus 3. gnome-power-manager - regenerates the app indicator menu every when it gets certain dbus messages, using up more heap memory each time. How I verified this: 1. upowerd - sudo strace -p `pidof upowerd` 2. monitored dbus messages using 3. used gdb and set breakpoints (after installing -dbgsym packages) I am still a little unsure that the events getting from upowerd to gnome-power-manager are the same; but I can tell they happen at the same frequency. Also if i remove my battery the events stop. Summary: gnome-power-manager should be 'freeing' the menu, or not creating a new one every time. Many users will not see the problem because of a variable frequency of messages from upowerd (depending on their hardware). -- memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569273 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 569273] Re: memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid
Yes, in my case it is battery related. Jason, I wonder if you have a UPS, or some other power related device like that? I did some more debugging. When I insert the battery, this subroutine is run continually: Breakpoint 1, gpm_tray_icon_devices_changed_cb (engine=0x80a3238, icon=0x80d90e0) at gpm-tray-icon.c:338 338 in gpm-tray-icon.c About once every second this routine is called and 4kB extra is used on the heap. I don't know enough about the code yet, but maybe the heap usage is never freed? -- memory leak in gnome-power-manager on lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/569273 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I used Compholio's script and it is showing 4kB every second (roughly). After three days I am at 670 MB. Possibly related to this is the battery in the laptop I am using does not hold any charge anymore.
