2019-03-07 Thread Simon Davis
Please do not forget that this bug is present at least since 15.10 while
we are going to see 19.04 released next month. Hey you, Ubuntu devs, can
I buy a beer someone for copying the original Debian version over
finally? If one of you do it once, thousands of users will not have to
on every update.

Yes, as you can read I have managed to get it working but it is far
beyond capabilities of many users. They expect something different than
a regular update process unexpectedly bricking their devices.

[Bug 1663991] Re: Unable to Connect Third HDD via USB Hub

2017-04-13 Thread Simon Davis
Hello, I tested the patch using a testing kernel from Joseph Salisbury
and it completely fixed the bug. Later, I was unable to boot to 4.8.0-42
which came with updates. I do not know why. I have never before
experienced such a problem.

What can I do to try it again better?

[Bug 1652270] Re: Could not boot into RPi3 with kernel 4.4.0-1038-raspi2

2017-04-06 Thread Simon Davis
I consider this a dead distro. They SHOULD take it off the web
completely and save people a lot of time. Basically, it's a trap.
Someone, typically an Ubuntu user, is googling for a Raspberry distro
and this comes up in the results. Being a Ubuntu distro, it looks
trustworthy and familiar to the user. And then? Installed, time spent,
upgrade, doh! Just causing troubles and making a bad name to the Ubuntu
as whole.

If you follow the steps described above, starting with a fresh install,
it works. You must make the changes before upgrading. The question is,
do you really want to invest your time and effort to a distribution with
literally no support and more than questionable future?

You can probably also try another distribution like DietPi.

[Bug 1663991] Re: Unable to Connect Third HDD via USB Hub

2017-03-16 Thread Simon Davis
Hello again, the gods must definitely hate me.

Your testing kernel got replaced immediately. Automatically. I do not
understand it. I have never used any automatic updater and I always do
all updates by hand. Anyway, the original kernel had been back with next
reboot. OK, no problem I told to myself. I will wait for official
update. I also didn't write it to you because I was extremely happy that
the problem was fixed and did not want to disturb anyone with something
what was going to be fixed with standard update schedule.

Well, the 4.8.0-42 kernel showed up today along with some other updates.
Great! I updated my system with the most recent packages as I always did
for years and years. But it was different this time. The system did not
boot with the new kernel. I have never experienced this. I must say that
my system is pretty clean and perfectly stable. I usually keep from
doing anything potentially hazardous or dirty.

The good thing is that I still can boot the older 4.8.0-41 kernel. So I
am definitely cursed and sentenced to stay with the bug forever. :) No,
really, I was not expecting this.

Why am I writing this most probably off topic information here? At
first, I wanted to share my complete bad luck situation with someone.
Second, I want to ask you if there is any possibility that it can be
caused by the previous kernel switching back and forth for the test. I
do not think so but who knows.

I searched the net, checked ubuntuforums.org and I could not find anyone
else with these symptoms. Maybe it is too early. I was checking the logs
and failed to identify the problem. I will try harder later because I
have to work now.

[Bug 1663991] Re: Unable to Connect Third HDD via USB Hub

2017-03-10 Thread Simon Davis
In fact, it already offers me to "update" to the previous kernel because
the system understands this new one as a downgrade. No problem at all, I
will not let the system to update the kernel until the new release is
out.

In the end, I tested six USB HDD drives plus two flash disks connected
all at once and everything was perfect.

Thank you once more. It helped me a lot and I believe it will save other
users from having hard time, too. I cannot say how much happy you have
made me.

[Bug 1663991] Re: Unable to Connect Third HDD via USB Hub

2017-03-10 Thread Simon Davis
Joseph, I have installed the patched kernel. As of now, I have a USB hub
connected with four drives attached to it. It is twice as much as I
could connect before. The syslog seems to be perfectly clear and kswapd
does not hang with 100% CPU consumption. I am stressing the drives a bit
and everything is working fine so far. The problem looks completely
fixed.

Thank you very much!

Two more questions please, ...

The kernel from you updated (removed) my only kernel installed. When a
new kernel is released, will the update process take care automatically
or should I execute some pre/post update procedures to keep my system
working and clean?

Can I expect the patch to be included in the next kernel update? I do
not want to make my system unstable again.

Thank you once more, Joseph and Vej ...

Is this what you are talking about?

Sorry, I am not a kernel developer in any way. I do not make patches nor
I know how to submit them. I did not know that reporting a bug has such
requirements.

Please forget it and, if you want, close this bug. I will install
another distribution which has this bug already fixed. At least, that is
what I know how to do it.

Thank you all for your time, I am very sorry for the disturbance.

Vej, Thank you very much for posting the links.

"What sort of updates are allowed for post-release kernels?"

"It fixes a critical issue (data-loss, OOPs, crashes) or is security
related. Security related issues might be covered by security releases
which are special in handling and publication."

...

"2. When"

"Stable release updates will, in general, only be issued in order to fix
high-impact bugs. Examples of such bugs include:"

"Bugs which may, under realistic circumstances, directly cause a loss of
user data"

This is exactly the case but Ubuntu probably does not care until a massive data
loss happens to thousands of people. I encountered serious data loss yesterday.
Fortunately, I managed to recover the important part of data from backups.

Even my main disk, SATA connected SSD (!), was left stuck as a result of
this bug. The USB connected drives hung first, the rest of the system
hung after I tried to unplug them. They were not mounted at the moment,
the SATA SSD was, of course.

USB is a very important part of computers and using USB connected
storage devices is critically important functionality as well. I really
do not understand how such a serious bug can be left unfixed.

[Bug 1663991] Re: Unable to Connect Third HDD via USB Hub

2017-03-08 Thread Simon Davis
Can someone please explain me the Ubuntu update process? My systems are
two kernel updates older now and the bug is still present.

Today, it made the system disk unresponsive on my server, damaging its
filesystem and dpkg database in the process. I think that such a bug is
critical and should be fixed and pushed to updates immediately.

Why is Ubuntu always late with fixing serious bugs which e.g. Debian has
fixed a long time ago? I really love Ubuntu but it looks like it is time
to move over.

Since this bug is really ruining my life I have been checking for a
kernel update every day. I updated to 4.8.0-38-generic today but, sadly,
the bug is still present. May I ask when the bug gets fixed and patched
kernel is released as update? Thank you in advance.

[Bug 1663991] Re: Unable to Connect Third HDD via USB Hub

2017-02-13 Thread Simon Davis
Amazing, thank you very much.

I do not know about any workaround. Plugging the third HDD into another
USB port brings the same result. On the other hand, it is possible to
use USB flash drives. Probably because they are not UAS devices.

I had been running a three USB HDDs setup to the day the bug hit me. The
setup was 2x USB 3 HDD plus 1x HDD in a USB 2 enclosure case. Everything
was working.

I bought a USB hub and new USB 3 case enclosure. With this setup, I
tried to plug all three HDDs into the hub and also two of them into the
hub and one to another USB port. I ended up with 100% failure
probability.

The presence of the hub or all three HDDs being USB 3, something could
have triggered the bug. In such a case, using USB 2 or removing a hub
could be an extremely ugly work around.

If there is not a serious work around, and I have not found any yet, I
will wait for the kernel update.

[Bug 1663991] [NEW] Unable to Connect Third HDD via USB Hub

2017-02-12 Thread Simon Davis
Public bug reported:

Hello, I am running:

(K)Ubuntu 16.10
4.8.0-37-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jan 26 02:27:07 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux

There has been found a bug in 4.8, which causes kernel call trace when I
connect third USB HDD to a USB hub. After the trace, kswapd0 process
uses 100% of CPU.

The bug has been fixed in 4.10. Is it possible to roll out new kernel
packages, please?

2017-01-31 Thread Simon Davis
I can confirm that editing the config.txt file BEFORE proceeding the
upgrade process solves it all. Very good job, sirs!

Unfortunately, one question remains. Is it really wise to invest time
into building and taking care of a system based on a distro that will
let you down and keep without any help, or even a word? Bricked for
months? This is a very bitter experience for me.

[Bug 1652270] Re: Could not boot into RPi3 with kernel 4.4.0-1038-raspi2

2017-01-23 Thread Simon Davis
I understand your point and I generally agree. On the other hand, such
an effort can be counterproductive and easily can cause more problems
than benefits.

People install a distro in a good faith that it will work and that the
maintainer will maintain it. At least, keep it in a working not bricked
state. A developer of a distribution is not the only one who invests
time in the project. The users do as well. And if you let a wide
userbase install your distribution you are taking a bit of
responsibility of the people. Giving out even a community built distro
under a well recognized brand name makes people think they can trust it.
It makes them think they can invest their time to installing and setting
up their systems. It makes them think they will not end up with auto-
bricked devices without any help or even reply after all the effort on
their side.

I think that letting people know that the problem will be fixed tomorrow
/ by next month / never does take that much time. So, can someone inform
users at least?

Look, this is not a minor one, we have bricked devices and it happened

[Bug 1652270] Re: Could not boot into RPi3 with kernel 4.4.0-1038-raspi2

2017-01-06 Thread Simon Davis
I did not have to issue apt install linux-*. In my case, apt update &&
apt dist-upgrade was enough to break the system as a new kernel had been
installed automatically. Some people reported that apt update followed
with apt upgrade break it too. This makes a big difference as the impact
of the bug will be much higher in the near future.

It is a nasty bug when you break the system in the process of taking
care of it using distribution's fundamental tools. Moreover, if you are
successful hot-fixing it, the system cannot be subjected to updates /
upgrades since then.

Does anybody know of a better fix than copying the backed up files over
the new ones?

Completely breaking a working system via its own update process is a

Yes, I am sure the problem is KDE related on my desktop. I gave up on

Sorry for stealing your bug report. I do not know how this bug whole

Even the related bug was reported on 2011-09-12 and still is Undecided /

[Bug 865193] Re: Windows keep losing focus in Ubuntu 11.10

2012-01-16 Thread Simon Davis
I have just had the chance to examine the problem because my window lost
its focus again. One thing I see interesting ... the window which has
lost its focus stays highlighted (e.g. the title bar, opacity ...) as if
it were still having focus. It is harder to notice that your active
working window lost its focus. It also makes me to think that it is not
just some application stealing focus but it is a general KDE problem. --
I am not sure, but if another application steals focus, the active
window should lose the decoration aspects of active window.

2012-01-09 Thread Simon Davis
Hello,

I am affected with exactly the same problem. I have EN (US) and one
national layout. The switching has stopped working after the mentioned
update. With the shortcut, I am only able to switch back to EN layout.
Trying to switch to the national layout does not work and creates the
-- - entry in the menu. Switching to the national layout using mouse
(not shortcut) still works.

Please fix the problem because this makes Kubuntu quite unusable for all
the people who need localized keyboard layout. Using mouse is really no
way to go, if you need to work seriously.

[Bug 865193] Re: Windows keep losing focus in Ubuntu 11.10

2011-11-10 Thread Simon Davis
This problem is not related to Unity. You also do not have to try any of the
reported tricks to lose focus.

I have experienced the bug under Kubuntu (KDE). All I have to do is to
type in Konsole. Time to time, the window lose focus and my actual
typing probably goes to nowhere. The top bar of the window still
indicates that the window is the one having focus but it is not true.
Since I use the Focus follows mouse setting, all I have to do to fix
the situation is to move my mouse to another window and back to actually
re-focus the window I was originally working in. I am also sure that my
mouse pointer still had been in the original window when it lost its
focus.

I have seen that some people reported using two displays. So if it
matters, I use two screen setup, too.

Please, set a proper importance level for this bug because working on
such a distro is real pain and some serious damages to your work/data
could be made.
