[Bug 1574120] Re: Notebook doesn't suspend when lid is closed after update to 16.04

The test #65 was with version v3.13-rc3. I repeated it with v3.13-rc5 with the same result. [Bug 1178131] Re: 14e4:16bc SD card slot not working on Acer Aspire One 756
The problem is caused by a combination of three bugs in the computer: 1) The card reader does not support L1 although this is a mandatory feature in the PCIe specification (see http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Documentation/ASPM). 2) The BIOS enables L1 although the hardware does not support it. 3) The BIOS dictates that ASPM must be disabled but it does not support _OSC control, so the Linux Kernel cannot disable ASPM during boot. 14e4:16bc SD card slot not working on Acer Aspire One 756 The memory card read (Broadcaom BCM57765) does not work on Aver Aspire One 756 because Linux enabled ASPM L1 on the PCIe channel since a related change in Kernel 3.0.20. Until a solution is available, I use the following command as a workaround: sudo setpci -s 00:1c.2 0x50.B=0x41 Description of the change that introduced the problem: https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git/commit/?id=6cac12dfab9c57a4f76821412224b226a9b08dff The full problem description with log files and result of my bisecting can be found in the Ubuntu Bug L#1178131. Kernels before 3.0.20 are NOT affected by the problem. The first problematic Linux version is 3.0.20. Steps to reproduce: - Boot Linux with any Kernel after 3.0.19 (Using Gnome 3 Desktop) - Insert any memory card into the card reader - Problem: nothing happens - Problem: In dmesg, the mmc driver reports communication timeouts for the card reader - Remove the memory card - Enter sudo setpci -s 00:1c.2 0x50.B=0x41 (This disables ASPM L1) - Insert the memory card - Result: It gets detected immediately. Gnome pop-ups a related notification window. - Remove the memory card - Enter sudo setpci -s 00:1c.2 0x50.B=0x43 (this is the value that the Linux Kernel sets during boot) - Insert the memory card - Problem: The card is not detected -- Stefan Frings Markenstraße 12 40227 Düsseldorf -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1178131 Title: 14e4:16bc SD card slot not working on Acer Aspire One 756 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1178131/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1178131] Re: 14e4:16bc SD card slot not working on Acer Aspire One 756
The bisect of commits to Kernel 3.0.0-16.28 .. 30.0.0-16.29 produced the following result. I dont understand what that means but it will hopefully provide the informations you need to continue debugging or fix the bug: df89d48a8cbdc23578397c6e62d5c9c9e630c610 is the first bad commit commit df89d48a8cbdc23578397c6e62d5c9c9e630c610 Author: Matthew Garrett m...@redhat.com Date: Thu Nov 10 16:38:33 2011 -0500 PCI: Rework ASPM disable code BugLink: http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/927848 commit 3c076351c4027a56d5005a39a0b518a4ba393ce2 upstream. Right now we forcibly clear ASPM state on all devices if the BIOS indicates that the feature isn't supported. Based on the Microsoft presentation PCI Express In Depth for Windows Vista and Beyond, I'm starting to think that this may be an error. The implication is that unless the platform grants full control via _OSC, Windows will not touch any PCIe features - including ASPM. In that case clearing ASPM state would be an error unless the platform has granted us that control. This patch reworks the ASPM disabling code such that the actual clearing of state is triggered by a successful handoff of PCIe control to the OS. The general ASPM code undergoes some changes in order to ensure that the ability to clear the bits isn't overridden by ASPM having already been disabled. Further, this theoretically now allows for situations where only a subset of PCIe roots hand over control, leaving the others in the BIOS state. It's difficult to know for sure that this is the right thing to do - there's zero public documentation on the interaction between all of these components. But enough vendors enable ASPM on platforms and then set this bit that it seems likely that they're expecting the OS to leave them alone. Measured to save around 5W on an idle Thinkpad X220. [Bug 1178131] Re: 14e4:16bc SD card slot not working on Acer Aspire One 756
I'm unsure which kernel I shall download and test. Because I am using Ubuntu 12.04 I assume that I need to download a kernel which contains precise in its name. Is that correct? I tried to install these files with dpkg -i: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.10-rc1-precise/linux-headers-3.10.0-031000rc1-generic_3.10.0-031000rc1.201305112035_i386.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.10-rc1-precise/linux-image-3.10.0-031000rc1-generic_3.10.0-031000rc1.201305112035_i386.deb But installation of the headers failed with the error message: linux-headers-3.10.0-031000rc1-generic depends on linux- headers-3.10.0-031000rc1; but linux-headers-3.10.0-031000rc1 is not installed. [Bug 1178131] Re: 14e4:16bc SD card slot not working on Acer Aspire One 756
Thanks for the hint about the BIOS upgrade. That fixed another bug :-) However, the SD card reader still sucks. But something has changed. [Bug 1178131] Re: 14e4:16bc SD card slot not working on Acer Aspire One 756
I investigated the issue a little more. Whenever I put the computer into standby mode, I need to unload the tg3 module again. When the module was already unloaded before suspend, then I have to load the module after suspend to get the SD card reader working. So both actions awake the SD card reader: loading the tg3 module as well as unloading the module. Before the BIOS upgrade, I had to load the module, unloading had no effect. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1178131 Title: 14e4:16bc SD card slot not working on Acer Aspire One 756 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1178131/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hello pacrook, I tried to verify your suggestion but I was not able to restore any of my backups (file system images). Seems that I need to check my backup software. [Bug 573728] [NEW] Video playback fails due to missing xv support
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image The problem occured first after I upgraded from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04. I cannot play back Video anymore properly on my ATI Radeon Mobility M6. The XV driver is not available anymore..I found out that the problem is caused by KMS, which is now enabled by default. The graphic driver or chip does not support XV when KMS is enabled. Adding the boot parameter nomodeset to /etc/default/grub fixed the problem. Maybe the kernel should care the limitations of these affected old chipsets. [Bug 572914] [NEW] After upgrade 9.10-10.04 KDE desktop does not appear after KDE splash fades out
Public bug reported: After upgrade from Kubuntu 9.10 to 10.04, I cannot start KDE anymore. The KDM login works fine and the KDE splash appears. Then the KDE Desktop and start menu should appear, but they don't. But the mouse cursor looks fine and I can use Alt-F2 to start any program. Also the KDE startup music works fine. I have the same problem on two different notebooks. One notebook has an Nvidia graphic with nvidia driver. On this computer, the screen fades to black while the KDE splash screen displays the last two icons. The other notebook has an old ATI graphic chip without 3D acceleration. On this compiter, the KDE splash fades out, leaving me with the blue background image, no desktop and no KDE menu. After playing around a lot on both computers without success, I decided to wipe the Linux partitions and install Kubuntu from the CD which worked fine. The following attempts did not fix the problem but might contain useful hints to find the problem cause: - Changing the graphic driver or graphic mode and text resolution of Kernel, Grub and KDE - Trying with a new user that has a fresh empty home directory - Copy /etc/kdrmrc /etc/kde4 and /usr/share/kde4 from another computer that works fine - Disabling boot splash - Start KDE without KDM. - In addition I noticed that the computer does not detect USB memory sticks properly while KDE is hanging. Dmesg shows that the device has been detected but it does not assign a device (usually /dev/sdb) to it. When I stop KDM, I can access memory sticks. - The fact that my second computer with pretty old ATI chip is also affected lets me highly assume, that the problem ist not realted to the graphic driver or any of its settings. -The fact that the problem occurs also without using KDM might be interesting because most other similar bug reports that I found highlight that KDM could be the problem cause. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- After upgrade 9.10-10.04 KDE desktop does not appear after KDE splash fades out https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/572914 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 413665] Re: xorg nearly 80% CPU load since 9.0.4
I read both sites, but did not find any hint there that solved my problem. The problem occurs also when simply booting the Kubunty CD, therefore I thought that providing a list of running applications and daemons was not necessary. I also wrote that killed everything that I can kill, leaving only a minimum KDE desktop remaining. The reportbug command was not useful in my case because the computer was so slow that I was not able to get the internet connection working. Therefore I had to write the bug ticket manually on another computer with a working Ubuntu installation. [Bug 413665] [NEW] xorg nearly 80% CPU load since 9.0.4
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg On my older notebook, xorg.org uses 80% of CPU time when I open the KDE start menu, open windows, move windows, use scrollbars (any action that changes things on the screen). I used debian Lenny before, the problem started since Upgrade to Ubuntu 9.0.4. The problem occurs also when I simply boot the Kubuntu CD. All X programs are affected, even browsing through a manual page using the man command within a konsole window is terrible slow (1-3 seconds for each screen update). When I switch to text mode (Ctrl-F1) while KDE is running in background, the performance is absolutely normal and the idle CPU load is 1-5%. When I run top in a konsole window, the CPU load jumps up to 80% permanently. When I monitor the CPU load using KDE system monitor, the CPU load is permanently at 100%. When I stop all service taht I can stop and kill all programs that I can kill, the problem does not change. I also tried the xorg.conf from debian that is known to work fine. I created this file manually, so that no autodetection is used. But this did not make any difference to the default file which is reduced to the minimum required lines. This computer has a Pentium M processar at 1200 Mhz, 512MB Ram and an ATI Radeon chipset which is supported by the xorg radeon driver. I assume that debugging could be simple because the problem occurs also on the CD version with all of its default settings while not accessing the harddisk at all. But I have no idea what I can do. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- xorg nearly 80% CPU load since 9.0.4 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/413665 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
