[Bug 415466] Re: Error installing updates for azureus

2009-08-19 Thread Stefano Maioli
You were probably using the version from my ppa, which has a different
binary package breakdown. If you want to switch to Ubuntu's packaging
you should uninstall azureus, vuze, azureus-common and azureus-cli, then
remove my ppa from your sources.list.

If you want to stay with my version hold the update and add my new ppa
dedicated to azureus, where I will soon upload an updated version with a
greater version number than ubuntu:

[Bug 301189] Re: Vuze's updater will not upgrade to 4.0.0.4

2008-11-29 Thread Stefano Maioli
Ok, this is going to be a bit of a mess. The problem is that, if I
recall correctly, the update 3.1.1.0 - 4.0.0.0 did work even on the
packaged version. But maybe I'm mistaken.

Can anyone confirm that this actually happened:
- Installed 3.1.1.0 through package management.
- Updated to a newer version (e.g. 4.0.0.0) with the automatic updater.
- Verified that the update was successful and that azureus starts up as the new
version.

If this is true, the azureus updater will be disabled by default but if
the new version has already been downloaded we have to let the upgrade
complete successfully. Otherwise some users will find themselves
downgraded to 3.1.1.0 possibly losing settings and features. The
downside of this solution is that if a users wants to stick with the
ubuntu version (which should be the normal situation) he will have to
manually delete his ~/.azureus directory.

To sum it up, we would:
- Turn the auto-update feature off by default.
- If a new jar has already been downloaded in the home directory, then use it.

I'm afraid the damage has been done to many home directories, which we
cannot touch with package management. Blame debian for dropping the
autoupdate-disable patch some time ago. :)

I think this is the way we should go, even if it doesn't really fit
ubuntu's policy. I already implemented and tested this solution. If
someone has suggestions, this is the time.

[Bug 296880] Re: Vuze won't launch if default Java is not Java 6

2008-11-29 Thread Stefano Maioli
@John: I propose implementing your suggested fix only in the Intrepid
SRU, leaving the startup script in Jaunty the way it is. Otherwise when
new java versions will come out things will break (it will be the time
for jdk 7 sooner or later). After all, since we will depend on
java6-runtime, a java6 jre will be the default unless a user decided to
call update-alternatives himself.

[Bug 293491] Re: azureus/vuze totally broken after interpid upgrade

2008-11-29 Thread Stefano Maioli
About reserved ports:

I remember seeing notifications about the port being changed due to
reserved ranges. It's probably the new Vuze interfaces that's hiding all
notifications. Anyway, I think fiddling with UI code is a little too
risky for a SRU and this doesn't really sound like a good reason to
diverge from upstream to me.

In the new version I'm preparing I'm changing the reserved range to
65000, taking only about 500 ports. Let's hope most ppl won't remember
that 2^16-1=65535 :). I hope this is good enough.

Now the update manager starts when you start vuze for the first time. It
asks to update and when you agree, it asks to restart. After restart, it
asks again if you want to update and asks again to restart. It took me
three restarts to realise this is a loop.

Please remember that azureus is one of the most popular open source
programs on windows. For a lot of newbies it will be one of the first
things they try to install on ubuntu and this doesn't make a nice

A fix is ready and waiting to be committed. Please be patient, I'm kind

[Bug 291082] Re: Azureus java.lang.reflect.InvocationTargetException

2008-10-30 Thread Stefano Maioli
Thank you for reporting this issue.
It looks like that for some reason Azureus does not work with Java5.

Please try upgrading to a Java6 jre installing one of the following packages:
default-jre (wich will install openjdk-6-jre) or sun-java6-jre.

You can check that the correct jre is selected by running: sudo update-
alternatives --config java.

(I think I'll fix this by depending on java6-runtime instead of java-
runtime.)

The Azureus package you are using appears not to be an official Ubuntu
package, but a package downloaded from getdeb. The Ubuntu community does
not support 3rd party packages and recommends using packages from the
official Ubuntu repositories whenever possible. You can either try the
Ubuntu version of Azureus (which has been updated in Intrepid) or report
this bug to the getdeb community.

[Bug 283836] [NEW] Unable to load module fglrx: cannot allocate memory

2008-10-15 Thread Stefano Maioli
Public bug reported:

Tested the new fglrx 2:8.543-0ubuntu1 on Intrepid daily-live 10/15/2008.
Module fglrx fails to load on a Radeon 9500pro.

Steps to reproduce:
- Boot with text kernel option (to avoid loading the possibly conflicting
radeon module)
- Enable repositories, install xorg-driver-fglrx (no errors reported, dkms
module installed)
- Try aticonfig --initial that segfaults:
aticonfig[10483]: segfault at c ip 080539fd sp bf8e5910 error 6 in
aticonfig[8048000+34000]
- Edit xorg.conf adding Driver fglrx under Device (the rest of the file is
unmodified)
- Try modprobe fglrx that fails:
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx
(/lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic/updates/dkms/fglrx.ko): Cannot allocate memory

X does not start either complaining that there is no matching Device
section for my card, but that's a different bug (it looks like an
explicit BusID is now required by fglrx).

[Bug 211610] Re: [fglrx] fglrx freezes randomly : Soft lockup

2008-10-06 Thread Stefano Maioli
Same here, with a Radeon 9500pro and 8.9 drivers from ati. The problem
has always been present since hardy release. My dmesg is a little
different though. The open-source driver works fine.

It is known to affect _many_ ATI agp cards. It seems related to big
texture agp transfers, maybe because of some chipset/card
incompatibilities. However, I tried tweaking agp settings in every
possible way with no success.

Maybe Canonical can work with ATI on a solution, afaik they have very
good communication channels.

Also, bug 254763 might be a dupe of this one.

Thank you for reporting this issue.

Considering that:
1) The swing webui plugin is pure java,
2) The plugin is not shipped with the azureus package,
I think this is not an azureus bug but an openjdk one.

Could you please also try with sun-java6-jre on the remote machine

[Bug 264950] Re: Azureus doesn't allow ports above 49151

2008-09-05 Thread Stefano Maioli
This is a consequence of the patch that fixes bug 222630. What was port
6880 is now a dynamic port chosen in that range, see README.multiuser in
the installed docs for further informations.

The range shouldn't be used for your main (and static) listen ports, as
per IANA specification (http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers):
The Dynamic and/or Private Ports are those from 49152 through 65535.
If you use one of those ports, it might happen that one day you find it
not free because the OS decided to assign it to another service. Linux
actually has a bigger range (from 32768), but let's follow standards.

I'll leave this bug open for awhile to see if someone has other
objections, but it's, in fact, a feature.

didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

[Bug 260630] Re: Mouse disappears when moved over kstars star chart

2008-08-24 Thread Stefano Maioli
Jonathan: it's not 3d, but it can still use opengl for rendering. But
still, I was mistaken, opengl support is not there yet, it's a planned
feature.

I was unable to reproduce the issue, but it still sounds X related to me. I'm
not sure if changing cursor theme could fix it.
You could try falling back to XAA acceleration, some EXA implementations are
buggy, or turning off compiz (if you're using it).

Let's see if the Xorg crew can provide some insights. Assigning to xorg
intel driver.

[Bug 260607] Re: Problem with USB Headsets in Firefox

2008-08-23 Thread Stefano Maioli
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 260618] Re: asf support required

2008-08-23 Thread Stefano Maioli
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, , because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read How
to report bugs effectively
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 260615] Re: Grub Fatal Error on Install

2008-08-23 Thread Stefano Maioli
Thank you for reporting this issue.

However, to be able to fix bug we need some additional details:
- The exact version of the install CD you are using (e.g. Alpha 4 Live CD).
- The error message reported.
- A list of the hard drives installed in your system and their type (e.g. sata,
ide).
- The partition configuration used.
- If possible, the steps to reproduce the bug.

I guess this bug affects the Ubiquity installer, marking as such.

[Bug 260615] Re: Grub Fatal Error on Install

2008-08-23 Thread Stefano Maioli
Now that I think about it I experienced a similar bug some time ago. In my case
the problem was that after changing the filesystem the partition type was not
updated accordingly. So what may be happening to you is that after you changed
the partition from LVM to ext3 it was formatted correctly with ext3, but in the
partition table it was still marked as LVM, causing grub to fail to mount. You
could verify this by firing up fdisk during the installation and checking (with
p) that the partition type is still LVM.
In that case this would be a dupe of bug 128668, even though the description
there is a little mixed up.
This is a long standing bug that should be fixed!

2008-08-20 Thread Stefano Maioli
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Please try to obtain a backtrace following the instructions at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and upload the backtrace (as an

problem.
Please also indicate the versions of the packages you are using.

However, this bug may have been fixed in a later release of Ubuntu and
it's unlikely that the fix will be quickly ported to 7.10. It may be
easier for you to test azureus on Hardy or Intrepid. If testing on
Intrepid be sure to check this too:
