[Bug 1887490] Re: [FFe/SRU] Add/Backport EPYC-v3 and EPYC-Rome CPU model

2022-05-27 Thread Sven Kieske
> I am not sure I would still call it a regression and it is certainly
an annoying, but it can be workarounded.

it worked before, now it doesn't without manual intervention, that's the
basic definition of a regression, no?

after all, there are _always_ workarounds for regressions, so I would
not consider it appropriate to call a regression not-a-regression
because there is some workaround available.

we are currently affected by this and need to figure out if the
workaround is even an acceptable solution, because in a cloud
environment you can't/don't want to manually patch libvirt xml for
dozens of machines.

[Bug 1914774] Re: HWE kernels do not ship linux-tools packages

2022-04-06 Thread Sven Kieske
so, this is very weird.

We used to install binary "cpupower" from linux-tools via this package
for the hwe kernel:

linux-tools-generic-hwe-18.04

but this seems to have changed somewhere in between, the file list on
packages.ubuntu.com

only lists:

/usr/share/doc/linux-tools-generic-hwe-18.04/changelog.gz
/usr/share/doc/linux-tools-generic-hwe-18.04/copyright

see, e.g.:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic-updates/amd64/linux-tools-generic-hwe-18.04/filelist
linked from:
https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic-updates/linux-tools-generic-hwe-18.04

I believe this is, because it's a meta/virtual package?

nevertheless I found how to install "cpupower" it seems it moved to the
following package (adjust kernel subversion as needed):

https://packages.ubuntu.com/bionic-updates/linux-hwe-5.4-tools-5.4.0-80

but this is also strange for several reasons:

first, afaik you need to install the version for your specific installed
kernel, but the package name leads to bad sed-magic in install scripts
like:

apt install linux-hwe-5.4-tools-$(uname -r | sed 's#-generic$##')

this is obviously bad, but I could live with that.

what is really really weird though, is the installation path of the
cpupower binary:

root@server:~# /usr/lib/linux-hwe-5.4-tools-5.4.0-104/cpupower --help
Usage: cpupower [-d|--debug] [-c|--cpu cpulist ] []
Supported commands are:
frequency-info
frequency-set
idle-info
idle-set
set
info
monitor
help

Not all commands can make use of the -c cpulist option.

Use 'cpupower help ' for getting help for above commands.

root@server:~# type cpupower
-su: type: cpupower: not found

it is not installed in $PATH at all, which is really contracdicting the
upstream makefile, imho?

see:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/tree/tools/power/cpupower/Makefile

am I holding it wrong? is there another package which installs cpupower in the
correct path?

why was the packaging changed, mid release? This breaks every workflow
around the provided tools.

[Bug 1948044] Re: charon-systemd fails on raspberry pi systems under ubuntu 21.10

2021-10-23 Thread Sven Lütkemeier
It appears that some kernel modules required by charon/StrongSwan are no
longer part of the default raspi-kernel. They are now part of a separate
package "linux-modules-extra-raspi". Installing this package allowed my
installation of StrongSwan to work unter Ubuntu 21.10.

I found this out by taking a look on other bug reports concerning linux-
raspi, especially this one about docker:

[Bug 1948044] [NEW] charon-systemd fails on raspberry pi systems under ubuntu 21.10

2021-10-21 Thread Sven Lütkemeier
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 21.10 from Ubuntu 21.04 my Strongswan
installation fails. It seems that charon-systemd can´t be started. The
problem occurs also when using a fresh install of the offical Ubuntu
Server 21.10 image (from <https://ubuntu.com/download/raspberry-pi>).

The problem doesn't exist on a VM running on an AMD64 system.

I attach the output of journalctl -xeu strongswan.service (after
increasing charons loglevel to 2).

Kind regards
Sven

[Bug 1909159] Re: There should be a more prominent warning that files in /usr/share/games/dwarf-fortress/ should not be modified.

2021-08-02 Thread Sven Bartscher
0.47.05-1 has been uploaded to Debian experimental. In this version the
following changes have been made that affect this issue:

* Configuration files previously in
/usr/share/games/dwarf-fortress/gamedata/data/init is now installed to
/etc/xdg/dwarf-fortress.
* The search algorithm for data files has been improved to better deal with
configuration files, so all configuration files found in the appropriate XDG
configuration directories are automatically picked up.
* The logix that searches for configuration files to include has been improved
to pick up more changes introduced in higher-up directories such as
/etc/xdg/dwarf-fortress. New changes are now applied, as long as the user (or
possibly Dwarf Fortress itself) doesn't write their own configuration files to
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/dwarf-fortress (usually ~/.config/dwarf-fortress) in which
case those files will have precedence over those in other directories.

This new version should solve this bug, because changes to the config
files installed by the package are now supported. The user may modify
the files in /etc/xdg/dwarf-fortress and the game will still pick them
up (unless they are overridden elsewhere as described above) and
upgrades to the package will preserve changes to the files by the user
through dpkg's usual conffile mechanism.

Unfortunately users who upgrade from an older version of the package
won't benefit automatically from this new behavior, because the old
package version already copied older versions of the configuration to
their $XDG_CONFIG_HOME which will override the newer versions in
/etc/xdg/dwarf-fortress. However, those users can manually upgrade their
configuration directories to the new mechanism, by deleting all
configuration files they didn't intentionally modify from their
$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/dwarf-fortress.

** Changed in: dwarf-fortress (Debian)
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Committed

** Changed in: dwarf-fortress (Ubuntu)

[Bug 1918000] [NEW] Description of btrfsmaintenance-refresh.service wrong

2021-03-06 Thread Sven
Public bug reported:

The description of btrfsmaintenance-refresh.service is wrong. It says
---
# grep Description /lib/systemd/system/btrfsmaintenance-refresh.service
Description=Update cron periods from /etc/sysconfig/btrfsmaintenance

though its indeed using /etc/default/btrfsmaintenance

While this seems pretty pedantic, it gave me a minor headache trying to
figure out whats wrong and why "balance" is not run. This will surely
confuse others as well.

The log also shows the wrong path:

[Bug 1917157] Re: run-this-one is very slow

2021-03-01 Thread Sven Hartrumpf
There are many programming languages where some frequent programming
patterns (like non tail recursion) use more stack than the default of
8192. People normally increase the stack limit in such cases, e.g.

 # ulimit -S -s 80

The run time increase is linear in stack limit:

 # time run-this-one echo

real 3,763s user 3,012s syst 0,249s busy 86,65%
real 6,954s user 6,028s syst 0,425s busy 92,78% (with doubled stack limit)

Or even:

 # ulimit -S -s unlimited
 # time run-this-one echo
pgrep: cannot allocate 4611686018427387903 bytes

real 0,658s user 0,071s syst 0,076s busy 22,31%

[Bug 1917157] [NEW] run-this-one is very slow

2021-02-27 Thread Sven Hartrumpf
Public bug reported:

All invocations of run-this-one are slowed down massively (since Ubuntu
20.04, also in Ubuntu 20.10). Example:

time run-this-one echo

real 1,902s user 1,216s syst 0,182s busy 73,47%

The slow down depends on the stack size of your shell. So, this is
probably caused by the pgrep call for run-this-one (see Ubuntu bug
#1874824 ). As the 1y-old upstream fix for bug #1874824 is not applied
to the Ubuntu packages, could run-one avoid pgrep calls?

[Bug 1874824] Re: pgrep reports error "cannot allocate" when run without stack limit

2021-02-27 Thread Sven Hartrumpf
Can the bug fix be applied for Ubuntu 21.04? Please.

On slow machines like a Raspberry 4 with stack limit 50 (Ubuntu
20.10), a single pgrep call takes 17 seconds!

[Bug 1901582] Re: 'Switch user' not available in application launcher after upgrade to 20.10

2021-01-05 Thread Sven N.
Downgrading systemd to 245 helped. Of course that's only a temporary
solution.

This is definitely a MAJOR bug that should be resolved ASAP. It makes my
system almost unusable as I'm permanently switching between two
accounts. It's also not the best argument to convince other colleagues
to switch from Windows.

There's even more broken. I tried logging on into tty2 with the second

makes the first session unusable. Switching back to screen 1 just shows
a black screen.

This way, the system is completely unusable.

[Bug 1909159] Re: init.txt changes ignored on launch

2020-12-29 Thread Sven Bartscher
Hi,

As far as you describe it, this is working as intended. Specifically you
should not modify any files in /usr/share/games/dwarf-fortress, as
changes there will in some cases not be picked up by the game and always
be overwritten on the next update of the package.

Instead you should look into /usr/share/doc/dwarf-fortress/README.Debian
for instructions on how to make local modifications to your game files.
For the spicific case of configuration files, you should find the proper
set of configuration files in ~/.config/dwarf-fortress. Changes to these
files should be picked up by the game just as expected.

However, I think there should be a more prominent warning telling people
to not modify files in /usr/share/ganmes/dwarf-fortress. I'm just not
sure *where* to place that warning. I'm leaving this issue open until I
have added such a warning to keep people from stumbling over this
problem.

** Summary changed:

- init.txt changes ignored on launch
+ There should be a more prominent warning that files in
/usr/share/games/dwarf-fortress/ should not be modified.

[Bug 1894422] Re: EAC3 passthrough doesn't work after suspend

2020-09-07 Thread Sven N.
I now managed to unload / load all alsa modules properly and sound is
working afterwards but sill no change to EAC3 passthrough (AC3/DTS still
working). I used:

pulseaudio -k
sudo alsa force-reload
pulseaudio --start

There is a workaround: Unplug the HDMI cable, plug it in again and and
switch the output to HDMI again.

I think this is an ALSA, Pulseaudio or driver bug, not VLC.

Also if I unplug the HDMI cable while audio output is set to HDMI and
plug it back in, I'd expect the audio output to be automatically
switched back to HDMI instead of being left on internal speakers.

[Bug 1894422] Re: EAC3 passthrough doesn't work after suspend

2020-09-06 Thread Sven Neuz
I just rechecked the output of alsa reload

(failed: modules still loaded: snd-hda-intel snd-intel-dspcfg snd-hda-
codec-hdmi snd-hda-codec-realtek snd-hda-codec-generic snd-hda-codec
snd-hda-core snd-hwdep snd-pcm snd-timer)

It seems there was still a pulseaudio running. I now managed to unload
all modules but after reloading them there is no sound at all. So reboot
it is...

[Bug 1894422] [NEW] EAC3 passthrough doesn't work after suspend

2020-09-06 Thread Sven Neuz
Public bug reported:

I set up everything for passthrough to hdmi. I enabled all the options
in pulseaudio config and it works after a reboot. Once I put my notebook
to sleep and wake it up again, EAC3 passthrough is gone even though the
options are still checked. DTS and regular AC3 passthrough still works,
just EAC3 is gone.

I also tried
$ systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.socket
$ systemctl --user stop pulseaudio.service
$ pulseaudio -k
# alsa force-reload
$ pulseaudio --start

The only thing that helps is a reboot which is kinda not Linux-like...

[Bug 1881444] [NEW] hgsvn - package does not contain binaries / python-code

2020-05-30 Thread Sven Roederer
Public bug reported:

I installed hgsvn to transform a svn repo. Installation went well, but I
found no binaries of "hgimportsvn", "hgpullsvn" or "hgpushsvn". I found
only the man pages.

"dpkg -L hgsvn" shows missing binaries too:

sven@strike:/tmp/svn$ dpkg -L hgsvn
/.
/usr
/usr/share
/usr/share/doc
/usr/share/doc/hgsvn
/usr/share/doc/hgsvn/copyright
/usr/share/doc/hgsvn/changelog.Debian.gz

/usr/share/man/man1/hgimportsvn.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/hgpullsvn.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/hgpushsvn.1.gz
/usr/bin

So looks like the packaging is broken.

[Bug 1880443] [NEW] targetcli fails iscsi setup after upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04

2020-05-24 Thread Sven Roederer
Public bug reported:

I manually updated from 18.04 to 20.04.
The system was also configured to be a iSCSI-target for 5 devices. The
configuration was done with targetcli-fb under 18.04. The system had also the
"open-iscsi" package installed.

after upgrading to 20.04 the whole configuration was gone. Also after manually
resetup the configuration disappeared again after some reboots. This happened
several times.
Finally I uninstalled the "open-iscsi" package and now this was not happening
any more after some reboots. this was inspired by
https://github.com/Datera/targetcli#migrating-away-from-a-targetcli--30-setup .

Also the network setup failed and the system was not reachable remotely.
Not sure if thi is related.

[Bug 1776873] Re: Whitelisted allowedURLschemes breaks some desktop apps

2020-04-27 Thread Sven Meyer
(I just wrote an article about this issue. Feel free to comment before I
publish it.)

# Ubutu 20.04 was just released and is broken right from the start (as
is 19.10)

Millions of people have started working from home and may have even done
a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04, but as they use Chromium (the pre-
installed open source version of the Google Chrome browser) and want to
join an online video conference with zoom .. it does not work! Joining
slack from a link ... does not work! What's going on ???

TDLR : The team responsible for the snap (Snappy) software manager at
Ubuntu messed it up. They do not understand the implications and
severity of this bug since almost 2 years, and there is no easy fix at
the moment.

Your options:
1) Use Firefox instead of Chromium browser, although Firefox (still) has
(sometimes ?) an issue with opening a zoom link. When prompted to run
`xdg-open` it does not work the first time, you have to do it a 2nd time,
(only) then it works.

# Background story (skip if you are not interested):

Working in IT for many years, I have praised Ubuntu as a free, stable,
non-intrusive, great alternative to Windows in recent years, which (now) works
out of the box on most hardware. I regarded it now as a great replacement (even
from a usability point of view) for the average (non technical) user.
My partner is a totally (!) non-technical person, working as an online language
teacher for her living, but I was able to convince her to get rid of Windows
just after she bought a new laptop and let me replace it with Ubuntu 18.04 MATE.
Everything worked fine, which is good because otherwise she would blame me that
she looses her income because I replaced Windows with Ubuntu. It's also good me
for, as every hour I have to spend on administrating her computer is one paid
hour less on my side.

A few months ago, I upgraded to 19.04, which is not supported with new
updates any more, so now that Ubuntu 20.04 came out on 24 April 2020, I
thought it would be a good idea to anyhow wipe the whole setup and do a
fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 MATE.

# END - Background story

# The problem : Ubuntu 19.10 & 20.04 + Chromium + zoom, Telegram, slack ...
(many desktop apps)

Starting with a fresh install of Ubuntu 20.04 MATE, suddenly it was not
possible any more to launch zoom from the online learning platform, and
for the heck I could not get it to work quickly (had to give my Arch
Linux / Manjaro Laptop to my partner so that she could in time conduct
her online teaching).

Some google research surfaced the following facts which I will try to
summarize here :

* Since Ubuntu 19.10, Chromium is installed by default using the snap
(Snappy) package management system [https://snapcraft.io]

* For some reason ("security" ? - to be filled in)
"snapd has a hard-coded list of allowed URL schemes. Currently that is limited
to "http", "https", "mailto", "snap".
which break a lot of desktop apps, not limited to zoom, but also many other
important widely used ones as well (Telegram, github, slack, ... looks like
"every polular app")

This bug has already been reported 2018-06-14 !

Reading through the discussion, I could not believe that this bug is already
that old (almost 2 years as of 28 April 2020) and has not been fixed by now !
I think this is a major issue !! Maybe I have overlooked a great solution, but
if we aim for making Ubuntu a great platform for everybody !!, it should work
(at least) with most commonly used software and scenarios out of the box.

Especially these days, as many people started working from home, and
many people trying to use zoom for the first time (zoom's security and
privacy issues left aside for the moment) or slack, or ... With a recent
(19.10 or 20.04) Ubuntu install and it simply does not work ! .. and
there is no easy fix?

How will that affect the adoption and reputation of Ubuntu, if the same setup
works perfectly fine on Windows and Apple, but is very hard to fix on Ubuntu ?
If I would be into conspiracy theories, I would even consider that it is a
(paid) attack against the Ubuntu ecoystem - that's how severe I see it, and to
my surprise the snap developers just don't get it.

If Ubuntu / snap team does not want to limit Ubuntu adoption to developers who
are forced to compile a patch by themselves, leaving out millions of users who
just want to have a trustworthy, free and stable platform, than any "solution"
which requires more than 1 click to confirm that Chromium is (this time /
always) allowed to open a certain app, is just useless.
I totally agree with ...

Christopher Barrington-Leigh (cpbl) wrote on 2020-03-23: "If the approach so
far is to individually whitelist classes of links, surely can't this be better
dealt with by doing something similar to how Chromium responds to me clicking
on a downloaded file: it asks me if it's okay to have

[Bug 1874824] [NEW] pgrep reports error "cannot allocate" when run without stack limit

2020-04-24 Thread Sven Hartrumpf
Public bug reported:

If you have no stack limit (ulimit -S -s unlimited), any pgrep call will
fail with an error:

If you have a high stack limit (e.g. ulimit -S -s 50), pgrep is very
slow:

[Bug 1796602] Re: Sending SIGINT to dwarf-fortress startup script wreaks major fun on user's local configurations

2020-01-27 Thread Sven Bartscher
This issue has been fixed in 0.44.12-2. The problem was, that on SIGTERM
the dwarf-fortress wrapper script tried to unmount the temporary
unionfs-fuse mount point and then recursively delete it. When the
unmounting step failed the script would still try to delete the
directory afterwards and the unionfs-fuse mount propagated all deletes
into the user run directory. The new version doesn't use unionfs-fuse
anymore, so the problem doesn't occur anymore.

[Bug 1860031] [NEW] Chosing manual partition changes keyboard-layout

2020-01-16 Thread Sven Koch
Public bug reported:

Hi,

sorry, I'm pretty sure, I'm posting this under the wrong section, but it
is late and I'm just not fit enough, to understand all the infos on bug-
reporting.

It's not a security-issue, but it can be annoying.

I installed Ubuntu 18.04.3 and I checked it several times:

If you chose german keyboard-layout and let Ubuntu do automatic
partitioning, the keyboard-layout stays german.

If you chose german keyboard-layout and create partitions yourself ("do
something else"), the keyboad-layout changes to english-US.

After the installation, you cannot login if you are using special
characters, because the actual login uses german keyboard layout, but
the setting of the password used english keyboard-layout.

Best regards,
Sven

[Bug 1860026] [NEW] Privacy options corrupt profile

2020-01-16 Thread Sven Koch
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I compiled qTox on Ubuntu 18.04.3 LTS using the description on
https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Tox/

That is

sudo apt-get install build-essential cmake libavcodec-dev
libavdevice-dev libavfilter-dev libavutil-dev libexif-dev
libgdk-pixbuf2.0-dev libglib2.0-dev libgtk2.0-dev libopenal-
dev libopus-dev libqrencode-dev libqt5opengl5-dev
libqt5svg5-dev libsodium-dev libsqlcipher-dev libswresample-
dev libswscale-dev libvpx-dev libxss-dev qrencode
qt5-default qttools5-dev-tools qttools5-dev

git clone https://github.com/qTox/qTox.git qTox
cd /home/$USER/qTox
sudo ./simple_make.sh
sudo ./bootstrap.sh
sudo cmake .
sudo make -j$(nproc)

Works fine. I created a desktop-starter (exec=./qtox).

Now here is the bug:

I imported a qTox-profile from a windows-computer. Works fine. I can
start qTox anytime using auto-profile-loading.

The moment I change the privacy-settings (don't keep
chatprotocol/chathistory [I am using german GUI, so I don't know the
exact english description]), qTox cannot load the profile anymore. I
have to delete the profile-files an create or re-import the profile.

I tried this several times. As long as I keep the
chatprotocols/chathistory, everything works fine. If I change this
option, the profile is getting corrupt.

Best regards,
Sven

Can somebody interpret this error message and give me a hint where to search
further.
Or is this a known (and maybe fixed) error?

Sorry, but I cannot give the other information (as stated in the reporting
guidlines) on
the Ubuntu Rasperry Version, because they are not available...

[Bug 1848892] Re: "error: Unknown TPM error." after upgrading to grub 2.04

2019-10-23 Thread Sven Hartrumpf
My affected system is an ASUS Zenbook UX305FA with Secure Boot turned off.
Thanks for all the hints, especially comment #10. My workaround was easy:
1. In grub menu, choose an entry and edit it (key press: e).
2. Add rmmod tpm in a line before the first insmod.
3. Boot with the modified entry (key press: F10).
4. The system might ask for a confirmation, but then it boots into 19.10.

[Bug 1815064] [NEW] udev 237 incorrectly reporting serials for scsi devices

2019-02-07 Thread Sven Wiltink
Public bug reported:

system info:
Kernel: Ubuntu 4.15.0-29.31-generic 4.15.18
Package: udev 237-3ubuntu10.3
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

We've been running into the issue where lblk -O outputs the wwn instead
of the serial for scsi devices. After some debugging I've come to the
conclusing that /lib/udev/scsi_id is the underlying cause. It outputs
the wwn of a disk in the ID_SERIAL_SHORT field, but does also export the
actual serial in a separate field (ID_SCSI_SERIAL).

sample output during udevadm test:
IMPORT 'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'
/lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules:50
starting 'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out) 'ID_SCSI=1'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out) 'ID_VENDOR=HGST'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out)
'ID_VENDOR_ENC=HGST\x20\x20\x20\x20'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out) 'ID_MODEL=HUS726060ALS640'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out)
'ID_MODEL_ENC=HUS726060ALS640\x20'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out) 'ID_REVISION=A280'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out) 'ID_TYPE=disk'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out) 'ID_SERIAL=35000cca232ab84ac'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out)

'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out) 'ID_WWN=0x5000cca232ab84ac'
'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out)

'scsi_id --export --whitelisted -d /dev/sdas'(out) 'ID_SCSI_SERIAL=

ata devices to not have this issue because they use ata_id:
IMPORT 'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'
/lib/udev/rules.d/60-persistent-storage.rules:38
starting 'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_ATA=1'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_TYPE=disk'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_BUS=ata'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_MODEL=HGST_HDN726060ALE614'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out)
'ID_MODEL_ENC=HGST\x20HDN726060ALE614\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20\x20'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_REVISION=APGNW7JH'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_SERIAL=HGST_HDN726060ALE614_NAHTWX0X'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_SERIAL_SHORT=NAHTWX0X'

'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_WWN=0x5000cca242d96928'
'ata_id --export /dev/sdad'(out) 'ID_WWN_WITH_EXTENSION=0x5000cca242d96928'

I am unsure if the fix should be in udev or lsblk, but I wanted to bring
it up for discussion because the serial not being displayed properly.

Kind regards,
Sven Wiltink
