[Bug 1161985] Re: Error sending ATA command IDENTIFY DEVICE

2013-12-20 Thread Tor Sjowall
I too can confirm this problem on two different installations of Ubuntu
13.10.

lsusb -vd 14cd:6116
...
  idVendor 0x14cd Super Top
  idProduct 0x6116 M6116 SATA Bridge
  bcdDevice1.50
...
bmAttributes 0xc0
  Self Powered
MaxPower2mA
...

Note that the device reports 'self powered' and 2mA but it is in fact using
power from the USB hub. The device works with Windows XP on a the same PC (dual
boot).

I did make an unsuccessful attemp at downgrading udisks2 as described above. I
didn't dare to force the downgrade considering the number of dependencies.

tor@maxlap:~/Downloads$ sudo dpkg -i udisks2_2.0.0-1_i386.deb

[Bug 1244529] [NEW] no repaint of unity at end of fullscreen chromium

2013-10-25 Thread Tor Sjowall
Public bug reported:

I use the full screen mode of the Chromium browser and toggle between
maximized and full screen with F11.

When leaving full screen mode the unity areas of the screen does not
repaint properly until after a delay of up to tens of seconds.

I've only seen this behavior with Chromium, not with Firefox or Google
Chrome or other programs in full screen mode.

This behavior is new with Ubuntu release 13.10.

To reproduce:
- start Chromium Browser
- maximize Chromium window (Alt+' ' X)
- enter full screen mode (F11)
- leave full screen mode (F11)
At this point there is garbage above and to the left of the Chromium window.
See the attached screendump.

[Bug 1244529] Re: no repaint of unity at end of fullscreen chromium

2013-10-25 Thread Tor Sjowall
With xeyes and chromium both running I get the same unpainted unity
areas after shrinking chromium. But the moment I move the cursor the
unity areas are repainted. This happens even if xeyes is hidden behind
chromium. It seems that xeyes triggers a repaint.

Also, if I click where I know the icons are at the top right of the
screen, the entire unity areas repaint.

Also, if I leave everything alone for a few 10's of seconds, the unity
areas repaint.

[Bug 1009373] [NEW] font rendering error in chromium and firefox

2012-06-06 Thread Tor Sjowall
Public bug reported:

Chromium has a font rendering problem on www.aftenposten.no

The width of the characters is wrong on the initial rendering. It is
possible that it is the spacing between the characters that is wrong.
Scrolling the page or a mouseover will give a correct rendering.

Small fonts are not affected, but large fonts are affected most of the
time. The problem is fully reproducable. Also, it seems to be associated
with the pages of aftenposten.no.

A screenshot is attached: BADimage.xcf

The same problem is also present in Firefox.
This has been a problem since at least Ubuntu 1104 and corresponding versions
of Chromium and Firefox.
I've not observed the problem in any other context.

Ubuntu version 12.04 LTS, fully updated as per june 5.

I currently use Chromium 18.0.1025.151 (Developer Build 130497 Linux) Ubuntu
12.04
chromium-browser 18.0.1025.151~r130497-0ubuntu1

The PC is a Samsung N145 plus netbook. I've also seen the problem on an
ASUS Eee R101.

[Bug 1009373] Re: font rendering error in chromium and firefox

2012-06-06 Thread Tor Sjowall
I suspect it is a local bug because the simple action of just moving the
mouse across the text will redraw and cure the problem. The source of
the area in question seems to be 'plain' html. Also, the problem is not
present when I run chromium, chrome or firefox on windows 7.

It looks to me like there is an error in computing the whitespace between the
characters in the text. Possibly only the first time a letter is rendered. The
second and subsequent times a glyph is rendered the spacing is OK. I was
thinking maybe the problem is in the font engine, and that it is revealed
because of the way chromium and firefox use the font engine.

OTOH, I know from experience that a user's theory about the cause of a
problem is at best ridiculous...

Of course, it is possible that the site itself is the problem, they have lots
of javascript and css and whatnot. I'll try to file a complaint with them too.

[Bug 270395] Re: cannot resolve windows host name

2012-05-13 Thread Tor Sjowall
This problem is still unsolved.

The host names of windows PCs are not visible to Linux programs with a regular
installation of Samba,
i.e. from Linux 'ping win_pc' does not work, but from windows 'ping linux_pc'
does work.

Also, 'nmblookup win_pc' works, while 'nslookup win_pc' does not work.

Installing winbind and changing the nsswitch.conf's host: definition to 'host:
files dns wins' fix the problem.
This is not obvious to a naive user.

I suggest changing the host definition in nsswitch.conf on installation of
winbind
I also suggest installing winbind together with Samba

This would improve the user experience when working in a mixed Ubuntu/Windows
network environment.
The whole point of the Samba package is to make it possible to work in such a
mixed environment.
