Interesting, I do not recall ever changing mirrors. Would the current mirror
used have changed post upgrade? Or does the installation media already point to
that mirror?
Thanks for the assistance. android-platform-tools was still available.

[Bug 1852911] Re: CriticalPowerAction=Suspend should be supported

2022-04-15 Thread Travis Downs
I would like to add my voice here and say that a patch, either to
upstream UPower or to Ubuntu's version would be much appreciated. I've
lost work several times as neither HybridSleep nor Hibernate work on my
laptop so it simply shuts down, and due to a quirk of the batter
management the delay between the notification of low % and then the
critical threshold and shutdown is often only mere seconds.

[Bug 1961619] [NEW] Installlation conflict occurs between puppet-master-passenger and puppdb.

2022-02-21 Thread Travis Bean
Public bug reported:

The installation of puppet-master-passenger fails when installed at the
same time puppetdb is installed. I found a workaround by installing
puppetdb first, followed by puppet-master-passenger. This installation
conflict never occurred in the past when I installed puppetmaster-
passenger and puppetdb at the same time on Ubuntu 16.04. The software
mirror I used for successful installation was obtained from
apt.puppetlabs.com/puppetlabs-release-pc1-xenial.deb. This installation
conflict started with the new puppet-master-passenger package obtained
from apt.puppetlabs.com/puppet6-release-bionic.deb, therefore this
conflict started after puppet-master-passenger was updated for Ubuntu
18.04 as denoted in the changelog.

I tried to contact nish.aravamu...@canonical.com who is the last
developer to patch puppet-master-passenger according to the changelog,
and the email bounced since this email address no longer exists.

Hi, Andreas.

The Debian/Ubuntu "upgrade-system" package automates updating the APT
package list, installing updated packages and removing 'orphaned'
packages. It is very convenient for unattended upgrades of multiple
computers because it can either be run interactively, or without a
controlling terminal.

The "upgrade-system" config file is:

   /etc/upgrade-system.conf

By default, "upgrade-system" allows "deborphan to 'guess' which packages
to remove:

   ORPHANOPTS="--guess-all --libdevel"

This removes too many packages that are installed by "med-bio-dev' in
particular, so I edited the config file to stop "deborphan" guessing:

   ORPHANOPTS="--no-guess-all --libdevel"

It appears that a recent upgrade unconditionally overwrote my edited
"upgrade-system.conf", which resulted in most of the packages installed
by "med-bio-dev" being removed from five of my bioinformatics servers.

Yes, it is a user's responsibility to check but I was caught out by it
recently so I posted a bug report because I thought other people might
also have the same problem when using "upgrade-system" with defaults.

The "upgrade-system" package is very convenient, but the default
settings allow "deborphan" to guess what to remove. In my experience,
that often results in "deborphan" removing packages that are needed.

Happy New Year :-)

   Tony.

Hi, Marin.

I *have* edited the configuration file, but the "deborphan" default has
just caused a lot of damage on multiple systems where I use
"upgrade-system" it appears to have overwritten my edited config files
during a recent upgrade and, as I reported, "deborphan" removed a large
number of packages from five of my servers where I have installed
"med-bio" and "med-bio-dev" from the Debian-Med project. I edited the
config file after initially running "upgrade-system" precisely because
of this.

I'm surprised that nobody else has been bitten by this bug!

Bye,

   Tony.

[Bug 1951596] [NEW] rmlint --gui (aka "Shredder") does not find any files

2021-11-19 Thread Tony Travis
Public bug reported:

There is a bug in the default max file size of 16 Petabytes in
"Shredder" being interpreted as a negative number and causing an error
exit when "rmlint" is run by the GUI when the selected folder is
scanned. In addition, simply changing the Units from e.g. Petabyte to
Gigabyte does not enable the "Apply" button, which is only enabled by
changing the default value of 16 to e.g. 1.

Another error occurs because the /tmp/app.log file is not removed on
exit from the "Shredder" GUI. If a previous user created this log file
it can't be overwritten or removed if the s't'icky-bit is set on the
/tmp directory. Including the PID in the app.log filename would avoid
the problem and allow concurrent instances of "Shredder" to write to
"$$app.log".

The following logs captured from a CLI invocation of "Shredder"
illustrate how the negative max size problem can be fixed by changing
the default values, but the /tmp/app.log problem remains:

ajt@pilot:~$ rmlint --gui

[Bug 1921064] [NEW] wget 1.19.4 corrupts large downloaded files

2021-03-23 Thread Tony Travis
Public bug reported:

In normal use, downloading small files, "wget" 1.19.4 works correctly
under Ubuntu-MATE 18.04 LTS. The length and md5sums of downloaded files
are correct. However, when attempting to download a larger 16GB .tar.gz
file the length of the original file on the server is 16336802611 bytes,
but the downloaded file is 16463139667 bytes and the computed md5sum of
the file does not match the stored md5sum of the file on the server:

The linked duplicate:

has additional log files from the same machine (obtained from running
apport again with sudo).

  #!/bin/bash

  /bin/echo "zzz running cloud init"
  /bin/echo hello > /tmp/hello

- /tmp/hello file is not created. The /var/log/cloud-init-output.log does
- not indicate the script has run (the "zzz running..." output does not
- appear). The cloud-init.log indicates that many parts of the init that
- run on other AMIs are not being run: it stops at init-network:

[Bug 1885973] [NEW] user-data not being run on 20.04 ARM Graviton 2 instances

2020-07-01 Thread Travis Downs
Public bug reported:

Start a 20.04 ARM instance using the Canonical provided 20.04 AMI
(ubuntu-focal-20.04-arm64-server-20200609 (ami-091fa45b154a839b0)), and
provide any script as user-data in Instance Details.

For example, this script:

#!/bin/bash

/bin/echo "zzz running cloud init"
/bin/echo hello > /tmp/hello
/bin/echo hello > ~/hello

Start the instances. The script should run, but it does not. The
/tmp/hello file is not created. The /var/log/cloud-init-output.log does
not indicate the script has run (the "zzz running..." output does not
appear). The cloud-init.log indicates that many parts of the init that
run on other AMIs are not being run: it stops at init-network:

This problem does not occur on 20.04 x86 AMI, or 18.04 ARM AMI, it seems
to be specific to 20.04 ARM.

2020-06-17 Thread Travis
@daniel: I have 2 extra DVI to HDMI adapters that I would be happy to ship
to you if it would help in solving this issue. My DMs are open on Twitter
(@travisdieckmann) if you’d like to let me know where I can ship them.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1873052 ***

I was able to get rid of this by changing the display scaling back to
100% and than I resumed the display scale that I had wanted.

[Bug 1877735] Re: Video playback is choppy [Haswell 1080p]

2020-05-14 Thread Travis
Found it!!!
A long time ago I installed an app called indicator-multiload that runs in the
top right of the menu bar. I happened to turn it off and the video started
running better. I have now uninstalled it and videos are playing normally
again.

I'm not sure the process, but this bug can be closed!

Thank you so much for your help,
Travis Keenan

[Bug 1877735] Re: Video playback is choppy

2020-05-12 Thread Travis
Sorry I should have included some of that information.

Watching You-Tube in the browser (Chrome, Brave, Firefox) is the where I
notice it most. However I have used VLC with local videos (from the
hard-drive) and it also has the same problem.

It happens with full screen and windowed.

I am not using fractional scaling.

[Bug 1875274] Re: usrmerge breaks perf symbol lookup

2020-04-26 Thread Travis Downs
This is the same issue as:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/valgrind/+bug/1808508

... where the fix was to manually path the Valgrind debug info lookup
path, but this doesn't seem feasible for every application that might
care about symbols. Better to put the symbols in the right place or set
up symlinks to ensure that is the case?

[Bug 1808508] Re: Valgrind doesn't work in disco [Fatal error at startup: a function redirection which is mandatory for this platform-tool combination cannot be set up.]

2020-04-26 Thread Travis Downs
> we can't think of anything besides gdb, valgrind, and libunwind that
uses /usr/lib/debug

That seems like quite an incredible statement! I can imagine that many
debugging and profiling tools will want symbols.

For example, this change is breaking perf right now, as it looks for say
libc symbols in /usr/lib/debug/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/, but the
symbols are actually in /usr/lib/debug/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/.

[Bug 1875213] [NEW] Internal NVMe SSD fails after soft reboot

2020-04-26 Thread Travis Downs
Public bug reported:

I have a Dell 3000-series Insprion, with the stock 128 GB NVMe SSD. On a
cold boot, it boots fine, but any restart gives me errors in grub
("error: command not found") or drops me immediately to grub command
line where the SSD is not accessible.

Manual power off (or choosing shutdown rather than restart) and power on
and it works fine.

I believe this is a problem with NVMe power management. If I add:

nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0

to the boot parameters, the problem stops.

I have tried other Inspirons of the same model and the same problem
occurs. There are a series of similar problems with other Dell models
going back to 2015 at least, so perhaps there is a common cause.

[Bug 1863532] Re: Invoking "python" brings inappropriate response from command-not-found when python3 installed

2020-02-17 Thread Tony Travis
Confirming this bug: "python3" installed, but "python" command not found
after I upgraded my Ubuntu-MATE 18.04 to 20.04. I realise that Python 2
is being deprecated in 20.04, but there should be a default "python"
command, so I added a Debian alternative:

update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/python python-interpreter
/usr/bin/python3 90

[Bug 1860109] Re: default /etc/ncbi/.ncbirc not read

2020-01-17 Thread Tony Travis
The BUG appears to be caused when the NCBI environment variable is
undefined. Setting NCBI to the installed location of the default config
file under Ubuntu fixes the problem:

> ajt@beluga:~$ export NCBI=/etc/ncbi
> ajt@beluga:~$ strace blastn |& fgrep .ncbirc
> stat("./.ncbirc", 0x7ffc01d0e2c0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
> directory)
> stat("/home/ajt/.ncbirc", 0x7ffc01d0e2c0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
> directory)
> stat("/etc/ncbi/.ncbirc", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1229, ...}) = 0
> stat("/etc/ncbi/.ncbirc", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1229, ...}) = 0
> stat("/etc/ncbi/.ncbirc", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1229, ...}) = 0
> lstat("/etc/ncbi/.ncbirc", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1229, ...}) = 0
> openat(AT_FDCWD, "/etc/ncbi/.ncbirc", O_RDONLY) = 3
> stat("./.ncbirc", 0x7ffc01d0eae0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
> directory)
> stat("/home/ajt/.ncbirc", 0x7ffc01d0eae0) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
> directory)
> stat("/etc/ncbi/.ncbirc", {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=1229, ...}) = 0
This behaviour is consistent to what NCBI describe:

If the NCBI variable is unset, "blastn" looks for "/etc/.ncbirc".
However, the default location the config file is installed to under
Ubuntu is "/etc/ncbi/.ncbirc".

[Bug 1860109] [NEW] default /etc/ncbi/.ncbirc not read

2020-01-17 Thread Tony Travis
Public bug reported:

While attempting to use NCBI "blastn" from behind a proxy, I traced the
execution of "blastn" to check if it was reading the default
"/etc/ncbi/.ncbirc" config file where I put my proxy config because it
wasn't working.

In fact, the default config file is never stat'ed or read:

> ajt@beluga:~$ strace blastn |& fgrep .ncbirc
> stat("./.ncbirc", 0x7fff8bbc0200) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
> directory)
> stat("/home/ajt/.ncbirc", 0x7fff8bbc0200) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
> directory)
> stat("/etc/.ncbirc", 0x7fff8bbc0200)= -1 ENOENT (No such file or
> directory)
> stat("/usr/bin/.ncbirc", 0x7fff8bbc0200) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
> directory)

I created a "~/.ncbirc" file, which is read correctly, so I'm using that
instead.

[Bug 1573561] Re: /etc/default/varnish is ignored (fixed values in systemd service)

2018-10-24 Thread Pete Travis
So, as noted, I disagree with Stig's assertions. I think it's better
for the distribution to provide the service in a way that includes
discoverable ways to adjust common commandline parameters. Varnish
doesn't really give us a file like /etc/varnish.conf for things like
listen port parameters so the sysconfig EnvironmentFile method gives us
the next best thing. Your approach requires a deliberate override of
the packaged service unit which could have potentially undesirable
effects in the future. As a qualified and experienced RPM maintainer I
do not understand your aversion to using EnvironmentFile for it's
intended purpose, or your desire for a more troublesome user experience
inherent to the alternative. We shouldn't need such dramatic and
[subjectively] non-intuitive workarounds to effect routine configuration
of your package.

[Bug 1797819] Re: fails to launch (unable to find libraries)

2018-10-15 Thread Tony Travis
Same problem running with Java 1.8.0_181 under Ubuntu-MATE 18.04 LTS,
but the stand-alone IGV_2.4.14 works correctly. However, the required
classes are in the igv.jar file in the stand-alone version.

The class is installed:

ls -l /usr/share/java/commons-io.jar
 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 214351 Feb 5 2018 /usr/share/java/commons-io.jar

However, adding "/usr/share/java/commons-io.jar" and
"/usr/share/java/gson.jar", which is also needed, to the -cp (class
path) argument of /usr/bin/igv appears to solve the problem:

[Bug 1573561] Re: /etc/default/varnish is ignored (fixed values in systemd service)

2018-10-11 Thread Pete Travis
I disagree with this approach. A given daemon will have command line options
that are imperative for proper operation as a daemon, and it will have command
line options for behavior of the service once daemonized. If you have to
invoke the daemon with ie `--daemonize` then it makes sense to have that
"hardcoded" in ExecStart. If the options affect runtime behavior but can be
changed without breaking the way the service is instantiated, they should be
declared in an environment file. The cited github issue is going in the wrong
direction, this kind of thing is what EnvironmentFile is for. I am very
skeptical that upstream systemd discourages the use of EnvironmentFile in this
way...

Please take a look at
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/varnish/blob/master/f/varnish.service and
https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/varnish/blob/master/f/varnish.params for
some guidance on using EnvironmentFile for this use case. I really do not like
the idea of overriding packaged configuration files to ie change the listening
or allocate more memory ( read: routine administration of the software ).

If the X-axis is %time for the benchmark read/write then why does it typically

Surely the X-axis is the read/write speed at different positions 0-100% across

[Bug 1308105]

2018-06-08 Thread Travis-o
Similarly I keep losing my configured resolution of 1280x720, with the
system defaulting back to 1920x1080 every time (which looks rubbish on
my crappy monitor).

Manually running "xfsettingsd --replace" is a workaround, but not ideal.
All progress though, it's still much better than rebooting every time.
Thanks a ton for getting us this far.

[Bug 1729680] Re: 4.10 Linux HWE kernel does not support nVidia GTX 1060 on Tyan S3992-E motherboard

2017-12-02 Thread Tony Travis
The Tyan S3992-E hardware issue I encountered attempting to use an
nVidia GTX1060 is that this motherboard only supports PCI Express x16
Gen1 but the GTX1060 requires Gen2/3 and is not detected by the nVidia
or Nouveau kernel drivers. However, a GTX460 graphics card and a Tesla
C2050 GPGPU are both detected and supported by the proprietary nVidia
384.90 driver on the same Tyan S3992-E motherboard..

[Bug 1729680] Re: Tyan S3992-E does not support nVidia GTX 1060

2017-11-22 Thread Tony Travis
I've updated the bug description because this appears to be a Tyan
S3992-E motherboard hardware issue. The product info for the S3992-E
motherboard says it doesn't support PCI-e graphics cards:

  http://www.tyan.com/Motherboards_S3992-E_S3992G3NR-E

However, I've been using nVidia C2050 GPGPU cards in these motherboards
without any problems...

The nVidia GTX 1060 graphic card that I tried does not work properly and
is not detected by either the "nouveau" or "nvidia" driver with the
S3992-E motherboard, but the same GTX 1060 graphics card works properly
in a Tyan S2927-E motherboard using the 4.10 HWE Linux kernel.

- I've just upgraded from Ubuntu-MATE 14.04 to 16.04 and my nVidia GTX

-
- The Ubuntu 4.10 HWE kernel does not support the nVidia GTX 1060 display,

Hi, Philip.

I've used the same method of installing to a partitioned "md" RAID for
many years on non-EFI 'legacy' systems, or on systems with EFI disabled
and I've not had any problems doing the steps manually. The problem was
that the installer crashed when it tried to install GRUB to multiple
disks that were RAID members. After the installer crashed, I just did
the GRUB installation manually without any problems.

All "md" RAIDs are partitionable since the 2.6 Linux kernel. The Debian
installer and Ubuntu 'alternative' installer both insist on creating
separate RAIDs for each filesystem, when installing to RAID. However,
this makes subsequent management of an instance much more complicated
because all of the RAIDs need to be stopped etc. before a drive can be
removed/replaced. This is a single operation using a partitioned RAID.

I don't believe it's at all unusual to partition "md" RAIDs, and it
might be awkward to boot off a disk unless the RAID is created from
partitions anyway. Indeed, you are warned about this when creating an
"md" RAID, but I'll give it a try and let you know how I get on :-)

Bye,

  Tony.

[Bug 1728760] Re: 17.04 to 17.10 dist upgrade automatically switched me to lowlatency kernel

2017-11-06 Thread Travis
This is exactly what happened to me as well. Computer is rather
powerful, so not necessarily an obvious candidate for ll kernel: 16GB,
core i7, NVMe M.2 SSD.

There is nothing that I can ascertain as to why the system switched to
the low-latency kernel after the upgrade to 17.10.

[Bug 1730213] [NEW] Mouse cursor flickers with box when external Display Link monitor is connected

2017-11-05 Thread Travis Brace
Public bug reported:

I'm having the same issue as well. With three screens the mouse has a
glitch where it's like part of the screen makes a box around it. It
almost seems to happen on interactions.. It's very noticable moving over
tabs on a browser window.

I'm not sure if the same effect would happen with two video cards two
monitors share the 1050ti with the Nvidia drivers installed. I did get
the latest display link drivers installed.

Thanks again for the help

[Bug 1723636] Re: package shim-signed 1.32~16.04.1+0.9+1474479173.6c180c6-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-10-18 Thread Tony Travis
Hi, Steve.

The 64-bit Ubuntu-MATE system that I installed to "md" RAID1 is working
fine.

I filed a bug report in response to the automatic invitation from the
crash handler.

Please let me know where I could find anything else that might explain
the crash?

Thanks,

  Tony.

[Bug 1123272] Re: high cpu usage on download (not optimised SHA256, SHA512, SHA1)

2017-07-18 Thread Travis Johnson
This seems to be a bit of a bikeshed on specific implementation options.
The problem here is downloads pin the CPU, and in my personal experience
I can download the same files via curl with nothing close to a CPU
bottleneck.

I do not know how you benchmarked APT but this may be a case of a micro
benchmark not properly representing the problem.

[Bug 1123272] Re: high cpu usage on download (not optimised SHA256, SHA512, SHA1)

2017-07-18 Thread Travis Johnson
I am not satisfied with this response: I experience CPU bottlenecking on
ec2 server instances. Gigabit networking with CPUs sub-3ghz is
incredibly common place (read: entirety of server ecosystem), so I'm not
sure what you mean by "usual" network bandwidths.

[Bug 1622571] Re: NetworkManager crashed with SIGSEGV in nm_dns_manager_end_updates()

I believe I'm also having this problem. I've uploaded the whoopsie dump

This started happening when I commented out the dns=dnsmasq line in my
NetworkManager.conf and indeed the crash happens in DNS related code.

The often occurs after resuming from suspend, but not always - it may
also just occur while using the host.

Here's a link to the whoopise upload - I don't have perms to see it, but
perhaps someone who does can associate it with this bug?

[Bug 1588428] Re: PCI bus error on startup while booting into login screen (Kubuntu 16.04)

2017-03-25 Thread Travis Runyard
This isn't a bug. If everyone here has a common PCIe bus (Asus K501UW
laptop), then it's an internal hardware issue with the Intel PCIe bus. I
get the same hardware error messages in Windows as well. Multiple
laptops of the same model had this issue. Reported the issue to Amazon
where I received the laptop and was refunded $50 for my troubleshooting
efforts.

ValueError: need more than 0 values to unpack

It is failing to substitute `distro-id` and `distro-codename`, and so
the for loop just gets: `['', '', "-security'", "-updates'",

Replacing the variable placeholders with the correct literal values
fixes it as a workaround.
