[Bug 1961619] [NEW] Installlation conflict occurs between puppet-master-passenger and puppdb.
Public bug reported: The installation of puppet-master-passenger fails when installed at the same time puppetdb is installed. I found a workaround by installing puppetdb first, followed by puppet-master-passenger. This installation conflict never occurred in the past when I installed puppetmaster- passenger and puppetdb at the same time on Ubuntu 16.04. The software mirror I used for successful installation was obtained from apt.puppetlabs.com/puppetlabs-release-pc1-xenial.deb. This installation conflict started with the new puppet-master-passenger package obtained from apt.puppetlabs.com/puppet6-release-bionic.deb, therefore this conflict started after puppet-master-passenger was updated for Ubuntu 18.04 as denoted in the changelog. I tried to contact nish.aravamu...@canonical.com who is the last developer to patch puppet-master-passenger according to the changelog, and the email bounced since this email address no longer exists. ** Affects: puppet (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1961619 Title: Installlation conflict occurs between puppet-master-passenger and puppdb. The Debian/Ubuntu "upgrade-system" package automates updating the APT package list, installing updated packages and removing 'orphaned' packages. It is very convenient for unattended upgrades of multiple computers because it can either be run interactively, or without a controlling terminal. The "upgrade-system" config file is: /etc/upgrade-system.conf By default, "upgrade-system" allows "deborphan to 'guess' which packages to remove: ORPHANOPTS="--guess-all --libdevel" This removes too many packages that are installed by "med-bio-dev' in particular, so I edited the config file to stop "deborphan" guessing: ORPHANOPTS="--no-guess-all --libdevel" It appears that a recent upgrade unconditionally overwrote my edited "upgrade-system.conf", which resulted in most of the packages installed by "med-bio-dev" being removed from five of my bioinformatics servers. Yes, it is a user's responsibility to check but I was caught out by it recently so I posted a bug report because I thought other people might also have the same problem when using "upgrade-system" with defaults. The "upgrade-system" package is very convenient, but the default settings allow "deborphan" to guess what to remove. In my experience, that often results in "deborphan" removing packages that are needed. I *have* edited the configuration file, but the "deborphan" default has just caused a lot of damage on multiple systems where I use "upgrade-system" it appears to have overwritten my edited config files during a recent upgrade and, as I reported, "deborphan" removed a large number of packages from five of my servers where I have installed "med-bio" and "med-bio-dev" from the Debian-Med project. I edited the config file after initially running "upgrade-system" precisely because of this. I'm surprised that nobody else has been bitten by this bug! [Bug 1951596] [NEW] rmlint --gui (aka "Shredder") does not find any files
Public bug reported: There is a bug in the default max file size of 16 Petabytes in "Shredder" being interpreted as a negative number and causing an error exit when "rmlint" is run by the GUI when the selected folder is scanned. In addition, simply changing the Units from e.g. Petabyte to Gigabyte does not enable the "Apply" button, which is only enabled by changing the default value of 16 to e.g. 1. Another error occurs because the /tmp/app.log file is not removed on exit from the "Shredder" GUI. If a previous user created this log file it can't be overwritten or removed if the s't'icky-bit is set on the /tmp directory. Including the PID in the app.log filename would avoid the problem and allow concurrent instances of "Shredder" to write to "$$app.log". The following logs captured from a CLI invocation of "Shredder" illustrate how the negative max size problem can be fixed by changing the default values, but the /tmp/app.log problem remains: ajt@pilot:~$ rmlint --gui --- Logging error --- Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/lib/python3.8/logging/handlers.py", line 69, in emit if self.shouldRollover(record): File "/usr/lib/python3.8/logging/handlers.py", line 183, in shouldRollover self.stream = self._open() File "/usr/lib/python3.8/logging/__init__.py", line 1176, in _open return open(self.baseFilename, self.mode, encoding=self.encoding) PermissionError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/tmp/app.log' Call stack: File "/tmp/.shredder-bootstrap.py.EE1CD1", line 19, in File "/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/shredder/__init__.py", line 42, in run_gui ROOT_LOGGER.info('Starting up.') However, when attempting to download a larger 16GB .tar.gz file the length of the original file on the server is 16336802611 bytes, but the downloaded file is 16463139667 bytes and the computed md5sum of the file does not match the stored md5sum of the file on the server: ionice -c idle wget --no-check-certificate ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/snp/organisms/human_9606_b151_GRCh38p7/VCF/All_20180418.vcf.gz --2021-03-23 16:22:12-- ftp://ftp.ncbi.nih.gov/snp/organisms/human_9606_b151_GRCh38p7/VCF/All_20180418.vcf.gz => ‘All_20180418.vcf.gz’ Resolving ftp.ncbi.nih.gov (ftp.ncbi.nih.gov)... 130.14.250.11, 130.14.250.13, 2607:f220:41e:250::11, ... Sorry I should have included some of that information. Watching You-Tube in the browser (Chrome, Brave, Firefox) is the where I notice it most. However I have used VLC with local videos (from the hard-drive) and it also has the same problem. It happens with full screen and windowed. [Bug 1875213] [NEW] Internal NVMe SSD fails after soft reboot
Public bug reported: I have a Dell 3000-series Insprion, with the stock 128 GB NVMe SSD. On a cold boot, it boots fine, but any restart gives me errors in grub ("error: command not found") or drops me immediately to grub command line where the SSD is not accessible. Manual power off (or choosing shutdown rather than restart) and power on and it works fine. I believe this is a problem with NVMe power management. If I add: nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0 to the boot parameters, the problem stops. I have tried other Inspirons of the same model and the same problem occurs. There are a series of similar problems with other Dell models going back to 2015 at least, so perhaps there is a common cause. [Bug 1573561] Re: /etc/default/varnish is ignored (fixed values in systemd service)
So, as noted, I disagree with Stig's assertions. I think it's better for the distribution to provide the service in a way that includes discoverable ways to adjust common commandline parameters. Varnish doesn't really give us a file like /etc/varnish.conf for things like listen port parameters so the sysconfig EnvironmentFile method gives us the next best thing. Your approach requires a deliberate override of the packaged service unit which could have potentially undesirable effects in the future. As a qualified and experienced RPM maintainer I do not understand your aversion to using EnvironmentFile for it's intended purpose, or your desire for a more troublesome user experience inherent to the alternative. We shouldn't need such dramatic and [subjectively] non-intuitive workarounds to effect routine configuration of your package. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1573561 Title: /etc/default/varnish is ignored (fixed values in systemd service) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/hundredpapercuts/+bug/1573561/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1573561] Re: /etc/default/varnish is ignored (fixed values in systemd service)
I disagree with this approach. A given daemon will have command line options that are imperative for proper operation as a daemon, and it will have command line options for behavior of the service once daemonized. If you have to invoke the daemon with ie `--daemonize` then it makes sense to have that "hardcoded" in ExecStart. If the options affect runtime behavior but can be changed without breaking the way the service is instantiated, they should be declared in an environment file. The cited github issue is going in the wrong direction, this kind of thing is what EnvironmentFile is for. I am very skeptical that upstream systemd discourages the use of EnvironmentFile in this way... Please take a look at https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/varnish/blob/master/f/varnish.service and https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/varnish/blob/master/f/varnish.params for some guidance on using EnvironmentFile for this use case. I really do not like the idea of overriding packaged configuration files to ie change the listening or allocate more memory ( read: routine administration of the software ).

[Bug 1729680] Re: 4.10 Linux HWE kernel does not support nVidia GTX 1060 on Tyan S3992-E motherboard
The Tyan S3992-E hardware issue I encountered attempting to use an nVidia GTX1060 is that this motherboard only supports PCI Express x16 Gen1 but the GTX1060 requires Gen2/3 and is not detected by the nVidia or Nouveau kernel drivers. [Bug 1729680] Re: Tyan S3992-E does not support nVidia GTX 1060
I've updated the bug description because this appears to be a Tyan S3992-E motherboard hardware issue. The product info for the S3992-E motherboard says it doesn't support PCI-e graphics cards: http://www.tyan.com/Motherboards_S3992-E_S3992G3NR-E However, I've been using nVidia C2050 GPGPU cards in these motherboards without any problems... The nVidia GTX 1060 graphic card that I tried does not work properly and is not detected by either the "nouveau" or "nvidia" driver with the S3992-E motherboard, but the same GTX 1060 graphics card works properly in a Tyan S2927-E motherboard using the 4.10 HWE Linux kernel. ** Summary changed: - 4.10 HWE kernel does not support nVidia GTX 1060 + Tyan S3992-E does not support nVidia GTX 1060 ** Summary changed: - Tyan S3992-E does not support nVidia GTX 1060 + 4.10 HWE kernel does not support nVidia GTX 1060 on Tyan S3992-E motherboard ** Summary changed: - 4.10 HWE kernel does not support nVidia GTX 1060 on Tyan S3992-E motherboard + 4.10 Linux HWE kernel does not support nVidia GTX 1060 on Tyan S3992-E motherboard -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1729680 Title: 4.10 Linux HWE kernel does not support nVidia GTX 1060 on Tyan S3992-E motherboard To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-hwe/+bug/1729680/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

On 13/11/17 17:32, Phillip Susi wrote: > I noticed that you have partitioned the raid array, which is unusual. > Can you try using just /dev/md0 for / with no partition table on it? Hi, Philip. I've used the same method of installing to a partitioned "md" RAID for many years on non-EFI 'legacy' systems, or on systems with EFI disabled and I've not had any problems doing the steps manually. The problem was that the installer crashed when it tried to install GRUB to multiple disks that were RAID members. After the installer crashed, I just did the GRUB installation manually without any problems. All "md" RAIDs are partitionable since the 2.6 Linux kernel. The Debian installer and Ubuntu 'alternative' installer both insist on creating separate RAIDs for each filesystem, when installing to RAID. However, this makes subsequent management of an instance much more complicated because all of the RAIDs need to be stopped etc. before a drive can be removed/replaced. This is a single operation using a partitioned RAID. I don't believe it's at all unusual to partition "md" RAIDs, and it might be awkward to boot off a disk unless the RAID is created from partitions anyway. Indeed, you are warned about this when creating an "md" RAID, but I'll give it a try and let you know how I get on :-) Bye, Tony. -- Minke Informatics Limited, Registered in Scotland - Company No. SC419028 Registered Office: 3 Donview, Bridge of Alford, AB33 8QJ, Scotland (UK) tel. +44(0)19755 63548http://minke-informatics.co.uk mob. +44(0)7985 078324mailto:tony.tra...@minke-informatics.co.uk -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1723633 Title: Can't install to md RAID1 in EFI mode To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-installer/+bug/1723633/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1123272] Re: high cpu usage on download (not optimised SHA256, SHA512, SHA1)
This seems to be a bit of a bikeshed on specific implementation options. [Bug 1123272] Re: high cpu usage on download (not optimised SHA256, SHA512, SHA1)
I am not satisfied with this response: I experience CPU bottlenecking on ec2 server instances.
