[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2016-01-22 Thread Usama Akkad
Tested on Ubuntu Xenial Xerus (development branch) 16.04 Gnome
Terminal Ubuntu 3.18.2-1ubuntu2.

See also: bug #1537064

A related bug is bug #1537064 to fix the situation when apt and possibly
other software show garbled translated scripts in terminal.

Example when running: "apt-cache policy gnome-terminal" will returned
garbled text from translated script on RTL local

[Bug 1537064] [NEW] Using a RTL language interface should prevent APT translation from showing in terminal

2016-01-22 Thread Usama Akkad
Public bug reported:

The output of APT command is in Arabic. This is problematic because
gnome-terminal does not support RTL text, bug #263822

The suggested solution is to prevent translation from being shown in
terminal for apt or other command line apps.

This have been tested on Lubuntu and with lxtermianl and on gnome
terminal and xterm.

Lubuntu version: 16.04

We hope that 16.04 will get out in perfect shape for all users.

Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Hebrew are unusable in gnome-terminal and

[Bug 1532519] [NEW] Language support installed because of keyboard choice but not checked in installed languages

2016-01-09 Thread Usama Akkad
Public bug reported:

When I was installing Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 I chose English as my
installation language and Turkish keyboard was selected and time zone to
Istanbul

When I open language selector I see Turkish is in the list of "language
for menus and windows:" and language selector suggest installing some
Turkish language support packages like language-pack-tr

However, I do not see Turkish selected in "Installed Languages" window
which I open by clicking "Install/remove languages" button in the main
window.

The problem:
Language support partly installed without me asking for and it's not showing in
"Installed Languages" so I can not remove it.

I think this issue might happen with many other languages. For example
If you chose a French keyboard during an English language installation I
could have this installed but not showing situation.

What I expected:
Just English language support installed.

What happened:
Turkish language support partially installed and not being able to remove it
easily

I brought the issue to #ubuntu+1 channel on freenode and it was suggested that
I open a bug

Public bug reported:

When ever I open nautilus in a folder with files that could have
thumbnail it does not show thumbnails and it consume so much CPU power

thumbnail and it keep using about 10% without me even using it. When I
close Nautilus I see no problem. I'm using PCManFM and I don't see
thumbnail there but I do not notice any change in CPU usage.

When I go to a folder without file to preview CPU usage drop. I noticed
that mostly in folders with many files to preview and after about 2
minutes of leaving it open.

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-09-28 Thread Usama Akkad
There is a new ALPHA (testing) workaround for this bug using MLterm API,

To test get the latest build of MLterm from sf.net, here are some
instructions:

you will need this packages build-essential, mercurial (to pull source
code), libvte-dev and libfribidi-dev

Start by getting the latest build:
$ hg clone  http://mlterm.hg.sourceforge.net:8000/hgroot/mlterm/mlterm

Then building:
$ cd mlterm
$./configure --with-type-engines=xcore,xft --enable-fribidi
$make
$cd gtk/
$make

ATTENTION: don't forget to backup libvte.so.9 (you might use locate to
find it) before continue.

Using the library from our build and linking,

$ cp mlterm/gtk/.libs/libvte.so.9.0.0 [where official libvte is installed]
$ ln -sf libvte.so.9.0.0 [where official libvte is installed]/libvte.so.9

http://mlterm.sf.net/gnome-terminal.JPG

Known issues:
* Gnome-terminal dose not start with compiz enabled
* Synaptic crashes when it should display terminal output

Please test ,report and help patching if possible. MLterm mail-list is:
https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/mlterm-dev-en

no this is not about Mlterm as long as VTE does not support RTL.

at least there should be a warning or suggestion or message inside the
terminal stating that gnome-terminal does not support RTL and you should
install something else, like Mlterm. that is only when a user installs
RTL language Local.

that will be a great help for users before they start wondering why
their texts is flipped and chopped

[Bug 603022] Re: [MIR] mlterm

2010-07-28 Thread Usama Akkad
many terminal application are being translated and that is good news for
many language user but for RTL users this mean problem.

as I mentioned in my video comparison between Mlterm and Vte you will
see unreadable messages from many APT related programs (apt-get ,apt-
cache etc...) because they were translated into Arabic. and at
TranslationProject.org there are many terminal software being
translated. RTL user will have to read (package like egakcap)

some says why bother using terminal, will at least half of the help out
there is using terminal commands. do you want to try the ls command
and check how does VTE show your folders? سطح المكتب (desktop) will look
like بتكملا حطس (potksed)

and the same with cd cat and nano. you can't use terminal apps dealing
with RTL text probably.

in short every action with RTL text in your system using terminal will
need a RTL capable terminal. so every time you need a terminal we need a
RTL terminal

as I can see there is too many opposition to having RTL enabled terminal
for RTL users. could we please have at least a suggestion when a
localized system user try to open gnome-terminal that it has a known bug
with RTL text and to suggest some thing else?

here is a simple comparison video

[Bug 603022] Re: [MIR] mlterm

it could be an additional choice in Language Selector next to
Translation Additional fonts input methods and spell checkers

it could be RTL enabled terminal (Mlterm) but this is just an idea.

many RTL user will already know that Mlterm is better for RTL text, and
it could be the default terminal without replacing gnome-terminal and it
could have the name RTL enabled terminal in program menu

I don't think the people will have a problem to figure it out.

[Bug 603974] [NEW] should have check boxs to enable/disable all the updates under each section

2010-07-10 Thread Usama Akkad
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

from time to time Ubuntu present you with update manager suggesting
updating. updates are separated by importance. I think having a check
box to enable/disable all the updates under each section would be a good
idea.

Currently:
update manager separates updates by importance but does not allow you to
check/un check all the updates under each section.

Suggested:
their should be a check box next to every section title
[[check box]] security updates:
  * package 1

[[check box]] other updates:
  * package 3
  * package 4

those check boxes will check/un check all packages under the respective
section

[Bug 577916] Re: lucid regression: does not resume from hibernation

2010-06-10 Thread Usama Akkad
replacing the uuid in /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
with the actual swap partition uuid fixed my problem

maybe that happened because I've had 9.10 with 10.04 and then I removed
9.10 and it seems that the swap was not enabled on Lucid and I enabled
it manually. I don't remember what happened exactly but I usually told
the second system to use the same swap of the first one.

[Bug 562130] Re: Selecting an RTL language should install and RTL capable terminal emulator

2010-04-21 Thread Usama Akkad
MLTerm is not a Gnome app, it looks ugly and doesn't fit well with the
Gnome desktop.

ugly? no. you looked at outdated pictures here are some fresh ones:
http://img405.imageshack.us/img405/5046/mlterm.png
http://uppix.net/6/2/6/ad60d642745d645d0390d78d41d95.png
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2027572/linuxac/various/Screenshot-Untitled%20Window-1.png
http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/910/mltermkarmic.png

and there is even a youtube comparison shows that the gnome terminal is
the one ugly for right to left

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H_HYkyD7wc

Konsole is using a workaround similar to bicon which could be used for
vte but it has many bugs and not maintained any more and his maintainer
is the same vte maintainer so he could have used it him self. and
Konsole has its owen issues with rtl. mlterm is simply the best for rtl
users.

[Bug 305286] Re: fails to playback ogv produced by recordmydesktop

2010-04-19 Thread Usama Akkad
I've tried this guide
http://verb3k.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/how-to-do-proper-screencasts-on-linux/

this gave the same problem:
ffmpeg -f alsa -i pulse -f x11grab -r 30 -s 1024x768 -i :0.0 -acodec pcm_s16le
-vcodec libx264 -vpre lossless_ultrafast -threads 0 output.mkv

but converting to avi solved it:
ffmpeg -i output.mkv output.avi

[Bug 305286] Re: fails to playback ogv produced by recordmydesktop

2010-04-18 Thread Usama Akkad
I wonder if this is related.

OGV files not transcoded properly
http://www.google.pl/support/forum/p/youtube/thread?tid=7b9148c46c6b6f90hl=en

I tried a record form recordmydesktop with this command
$ ffmpeg -i video.ogv video.avi

and got similar to this result:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joAzMsP_2Zs

I tried it my self actually so I figured this staff

any way using the guide here fixed my problem as suggested in #ffmpeg
@freenode

HOWTO: Install and use the latest FFmpeg and x264
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=786095

and I was able to convert video again and upload it successfully and the
same file with corrupted output worked after converting

if this isn't related please tell me so I can copy this report to a new bug
thanks

please, if RTL isn't you issue then do as I did. go to #ubuntu-devel or

you think if some one was using a system with RTL language support
installed he must go to English speakers to get help!? how they can help
him if it require some interaction with the *translated* GUI

I think he will prefer to ask his language speakers

[Bug 562130] Re: Selecting an RTL language should install and RTL capable terminal emulator

2010-04-14 Thread Usama Akkad
@persia  Ddorda

1. are you saying if you can't save all the issue don't save any? simply mlterm
works vte doesn't for RTL
2. about embedding: were vte is embedded you can't input. were vte is embedded
you don't get questions asking to press yes or no like with apt-get. embedding
is a fancy feature. not vital (I think)
3. adding mlterm will solve most of the problems
4. do you think people should install packages to solve problems of installing
RTL support?
5. it's not trivial to install a package to help user instead of throwing them
to search in the web for fix
6. a look in TranslationProject.org tells that many terminal application is
ready to be translated
7. terminal is vital. and some times easier than the GUI. most of the
documents, wikis, forums are using Terminal in their howto's , guides and
fixes. (I don't know why should I explain that to GNU/Linux user)
8. not only translated software is the problem. but also the command line text
editors ,listing folder(ls), cat and any other command that deal with text
will fail to display RTL correctly.

CLI is for professionals, that will have to know English anyway, so the
translation of the CLI is just pointless.

!!!, I'll just say read above.

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-04-07 Thread Usama Akkad
@#26 the vte developer says that he need to rewrite vte code to fix it.
and he won't.

to all others, did you hear about mlterm? why we don't support replacing
vte by mlterm? it will fix 90% of the problem I guess

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-04-05 Thread Usama Akkad
I think pushing mlterm will fix most of the problems

vte is not going to be fixed any time soon and the developer will not change
the LANG in terminal
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=321490#c17

so I think we should go with mlterm

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-04-04 Thread Usama Akkad
I've got this respond:

Hi,

uahello I wonder if mlterm support embedding and if it can replace vte.

I think the simplest way to substitute mlterm for vte is

to support XEmbed protocol and wrap embedded mlterm screen

in a GTK+ widget which provides vte compatible API functions.

It looks interesting, but not so easy. At present I don't

have a plan to try it.

[Bug 263822] Re: RTL (right to left) support in terminal (BiDi)

2010-04-02 Thread Usama Akkad
@Yaron I agree on having the calender based on your location,
for example if some one chosen Jerusalem (Palestine) as a city he should have
the Hijri and Gregorian calender installed.
(in the Islamic Hijri calender Friday is a holiday )
but this is not the subject of this bug. we might open another bug for that.

I'm thinking of writing to all RTL locale teams to get their opinion on
having mlterm installed by default for the RTL locales

I've heard that bahdad the developer of vte is working on solution named
harf-buzz that will allow RTL text in terminal. we should investigate
this in the upstream bug.

what do you think of mlterm, could it be used as the default for RTL languages?
it can show Japanese even.
