There is a new ALPHA (testing) workaround for this bug using MLterm API, To test get the latest build of MLterm from sf.net, here are some instructions: you will need this packages build-essential, mercurial (to pull source code), libvte-dev and libfribidi-dev Start by getting the latest build: $ hg clone http://mlterm.hg.sourceforge.net:8000/hgroot/mlterm/mlterm Then building: $ cd mlterm $./configure --with-type-engines=xcore,xft --enable-fribidi $make $cd gtk/ $make ATTENTION: don't forget to backup libvte.so.9 (you might use locate to find it) before continue. Using the library from our build and linking, $ cp mlterm/gtk/.libs/libvte.so.9.0.0 [where official libvte is installed] $ ln -sf libvte.so.9.0.0 [where official libvte is installed]/libvte.so.9 http://mlterm.sf.net/gnome-terminal.JPG Known issues: * Gnome-terminal dose not start with compiz enabled * Synaptic crashes when it should display terminal output Please test ,report and help patching if possible. [Bug 603022] Re: [MIR] mlterm
many terminal application are being translated and that is good news for many language user but for RTL users this mean problem. as I mentioned in my video comparison between Mlterm and Vte you will see unreadable messages from many APT related programs (apt-get ,apt- cache etc...) because they were translated into Arabic. and at TranslationProject.org there are many terminal software being translated. RTL user will have to read (package like egakcap) some says why bother using terminal, will at least half of the help out there is using terminal commands. do you want to try the ls command and check how does VTE show your folders? سطح المكتب (desktop) will look like بتكملا حطس (potksed) and the same with cd cat and nano. you can't use terminal apps dealing with RTL text probably. in short every action with RTL text in your system using terminal will need a RTL capable terminal. so every time you need a terminal we need a RTL terminal as I can see there is too many opposition to having RTL enabled terminal for RTL users. could we please have at least a suggestion when a localized system user try to open gnome-terminal that it has a known bug with RTL text and to suggest some thing else? here is a simple comparison video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H_HYkyD7wc and there more here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Mlterm -- [MIR] mlterm https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603022 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

it could be an additional choice in Language Selector next to Translation Additional fonts input methods and spell checkers it could be RTL enabled terminal (Mlterm) but this is just an idea. many RTL user will already know that Mlterm is better for RTL text, and it could be the default terminal without replacing gnome-terminal and it could have the name RTL enabled terminal in program menu I don't think the people will have a problem to figure it out. -- [MIR] mlterm https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603022 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 562130] Re: Selecting an RTL language should install and RTL capable terminal emulator
@persia Ddorda 1. are you saying if you can't save all the issue don't save any? simply mlterm works vte doesn't for RTL 2. about embedding: were vte is embedded you can't input. were vte is embedded you don't get questions asking to press yes or no like with apt-get. embedding is a fancy feature. not vital (I think) 3. adding mlterm will solve most of the problems 4. do you think people should install packages to solve problems of installing RTL support? 5. it's not trivial to install a package to help user instead of throwing them to search in the web for fix 6. a look in TranslationProject.org tells that many terminal application is ready to be translated 7. terminal is vital. and some times easier than the GUI. most of the documents, wikis, forums are using Terminal in their howto's , guides and fixes. (I don't know why should I explain that to GNU/Linux user) 8. not only translated software is the problem. but also the command line text editors ,listing folder(ls), cat and any other command that deal with text will fail to display RTL correctly. CLI is for professionals, that will have to know English anyway, so the translation of the CLI is just pointless. !!!, I'll just say read above. -- Selecting an RTL language should install and RTL capable terminal emulator https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562130 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
