[Bug 488553] [NEW] System rendered unusable after enabling Compiz Reflection plugin

2009-11-25 Thread Vajra Vrtti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

Karmic desktop completely frozen (mouse and keyboard) after enabling
Compiz Reflection plug-in in a Dell Inspiron 1525 notebook with an Intel
965 GM video controller. The problem persisted (no mouse, no keyboard)
after turning the computer off and rebooting. The problem could not be
fixed even uninstalling (apt-get purge) Compiz in a recovery mode boot.
System rendered unusable.

Steps to reproduce:

1- Boot the Karmic Live CD.
2- Open System - Administration - Software Sources.
3- Enable the Universe repository and reload package information.
4- Install Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (cssm) in Ubuntu Software Center.
5- Open System - Preferences - CompizConfig Settings Manager
6- Enable the Reflection plug-in and the destop immediately freezes.

[Bug 407862] [NEW] [karmic] Messages not being sent to system logs

2009-08-01 Thread Vajra Vrtti
Public bug reported:

rsyslogd: [origin software=rsyslogd swVersion=4.2.0 x-pid=2296
x-info=http://www.rsyslog.com;] rsyslogd was HUPed, type 'lightweight'.

After the above message in syslog no more messages are sent to any
system logs. Plugging and unplugging an usb device produce no messages,
although the device is mounted an works fine. Also, nothing is produced
by the logger command.

The problem occurs in a desktop and in a VirtualBox virtual machine. It
occurred soon after karmic alpha 3 installation and persisted after
installing all available updates in both environments.

2007-12-03 Thread Vajra Vrtti
It may not be necessary anymore but I found out why I couldn't start

/sbin/klogd read access to /proc/kmsg. After disabling the profile I

[Bug 160238] Re: Corrupted AppArmor audit log messages

2007-11-10 Thread Vajra Vrtti
If this is a reoccurring problem we can track down where it is happening by
cutting out parts of the auditing chain.
Basically try sending the dd output straight to disk, if that is corrupt then
its either kernel audit or dd, to rule out
dd we would remove dd and have ksyslogd read the ring buffer directly, etc.

I'm afraid this is beyond my technical skill.

2007-11-09 Thread Vajra Vrtti
Before each of the following tests I deleted
/etc/apparmor.d/usr.bin.skype and reloaded all apparmor profiles.

First, I ran “aa-genprof skype”. This time there was only one corrupted
message in /var/log/messages (attachment). Although it issued some error
messages, the process did not crash, and the profile was correctly
created.

Second, I installed the auditd package, as suggested, and then “aa-
genprof skype” ran perfectly using /var/log/audit/audit.log.

I will try to profile more complex applications, such as Firefox, and
post the results here.

ATTENTION!
A system using kernel 2.6.20-16 will hang during installation of package
'hddtemp'. In such case, a hardware reset will be required. The next boot will
hang while loading the X server. If there was no previous kernel to fall back
the system will be unusable, unless the user is skilled enough to boot in
recovery mode, run a 'dpkg --configure -a', and then remove 'hddtemp' from the

[Bug 117621] X server hangs at boot after latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update

2007-05-29 Thread Vajra Vrtti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

After updating to kernel 2.6.20-16.28 the boot process hangs, apparently
while starting the X server. Usually the system hangs with a black
screen at the point it should display the GDM (login) screen. Less
frequently a frozen X shaped cursor is visible in the center of the
black screen. The keyboard is inactive: 'caps lock' or 'num lock' do not
work. The HD led blinks every 2 seconds. A hardware reset is required.

The problem occurs with both 'nvidia-glx' and 'nv' drivers (standard
install from Ubuntu repositories).

The system works fine with the previous 2.6.20-15 kernel.

Otherwise, I was able to boot kernel 2.6.20-16.28 in recovery mode and
and successfully start the X server (startx) from the command line. That
gave me a desktop in root mode. I manually started GDM and restarted the
X server (ctrl+alt+back) and that gave me my usual GDM login screen,
from which I was able to login to my personal account. After an initial
error message saying 'failed to initialize HAL' the system was quite
functional, including Beryl. Although /dev/sda and /dev/sdb were changed
to /dev/hde/ and /dev/hdg/ I could access all partitions, including NTFS
read/write. The only problem was that I could not mount neither my cdrom
nor my USB pendrive. Trying to access the cdrom from Nautilus gave an
error message saying '/dev/sdc0 does not exist'.

[Bug 117621] Re: X server hangs at boot after latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update

2007-05-29 Thread Vajra Vrtti
I think Beryl is definitely not involved. I have never have Beryl
started automatically. I always begin with a Metacity desktop and start
Beryl manually from System Tools-Beryl Manager. Anyway, for the test
I explicitly set the desktop manager to Matacity in Beryl Manager and
then rebooted using the 'nv' driver and kernel 2.6.20-16.28. It made no
difference. I got the black screen exactly as before.

After a successful boot with 2.6.20-15 Xorg.0.log seems the same, with the
following lines added at the end:
(II) Configured Mouse: ps2EnableDataReporting: succeeded
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc, removing from
list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic, removing from
list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1, removing from
list!

In the syslog, the message apm: disabled - APM is not SMP safe is
followed by the start of the Bluetooth daemon. Since I don't use
Bluetooth, I tried to uninstall the package bluez-utils, because other
people were reporting network problems. But that also made no
difference.

[Bug 117621] Re: X server hangs at boot after latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update

2007-05-29 Thread Vajra Vrtti
I decided to test a fresh installation on a different partition. I
installed Feisty from the same CD I used before. After rebooting the new
installation, and without making any customization, I let Update
Manager apply all available updates. Surprisingly, the new kernel
2.6.20-16.28 booted without any problem. Not only that, but my cdrom and
my USB pendrive also worked fine.

We may conclude that the problems were unrelated to anything in my
hardware and must have been caused by some other installed software. As
time permit, I will continue to install all the packages I have in my
normal system, as well as replicate its configurations.

[Bug 117314] Re: latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update gives boot problems

2007-05-28 Thread Vajra Vrtti
In my case, kernel hangs during boot with a X cursor frozen in a black screen.
Uninstalling nvidia-glx and falling back to the 'nv' driver did not solve the
problem.
2.6.20-15 works fine.

[Bug 117314] Re: latest kernel(2.6.20-16.28) update gives boot problems

2007-05-28 Thread Vajra Vrtti
@Gorgonzola
Besides that particular problem, there are people reporting issues with third
party drivers, X server not loading and wireless cards failing to work. Please
bear in mind that these issues are all related to modified kernel modules, and
DO NOT apply to the kernel itself.
My system hangs apparently while loading X server. Since I have installed
everything from the Ubuntu repositories that should be correctly handled by the
'linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic' package. It was NOT.
