I used to have this problem on earlier versions of Ubuntu. On a 64-bit Natty system, the touchpad mostly works as expected but stops responding after waking up from standby. I have the same problem, with xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Jaunty. It looks a lot better, but not great. When I run it in a window without compiz activated, it is just fine - smoth animation, CPU consumtion around 30%. With compiz, the planet disappears after a few seconds and only the stars are seen. I have found that the effects of this bug are a lot less severe if driconf is used to turn on vertical blanking synchronization. It's kind of a half-workaround. Well... with stars it's up above ninety percent, without them it's around fifty. I'm not sure what's acceptable in these circumstances. By the way, if I leave it running for a while with the stars, contrary to what I wrote before it will actually give some warnings. It is reproducible by opening google, pressing Ctrl+F (getting the cursor out of the input area of course) and entering the number 2. It will not be found. Now enter any other character, and delete this character. The number 2 in 2008 will be found. Entering the number 0 will find nothing, entering another 0 will find 00 in 2008. This problem is a lot less severe for me since I upgraded to Hardy. The hacks don't lock up the system for nearly as long time at a time, so after 5-10 seconds or something like that it's possible to terminate them. Braid is actually still present on my system after the upgrade. I've had Compiz disabled as a workaround, so I didn't notice. Now I tried it with the screensavers Mauro Torrez mentions, a sure enough - it leads to the same bitter end. I think I may have made a mistake. I saw these fonts looking weird when used to display western text in the fontglide screensaver, and then also in gnome-font-viewer. I checked in fontforge to see the that the encoding was correct and at the time somehow it looked as though the glyphs were in the wrong places. Now when I look at it today they seem to be in the right places, so I honestly don't know what happened last time. Latin script isn't covered, of course, but that's ok and it's the screensavers problem if it tries to use a font that doesn't cover the glyphs it needs. [Bug 101943] Re: braid screensaver crashes system with compiz activated
If I understand this correctly, the problem is that when Compiz is some
applications crash, among them braid and some other screensavers. So far
it has only been reported with the proprietary NVIDIA driver ("nvidia")
and the Intel driver ("intel"). Does anyone have solid information that
this bug does not in fact manifest with other drivers? If so, then
concentrating on isolating and fixing some problem in these two drivers
seems like the right thing to do. If not, then it seems to me that
Compiz is a better suspect than the screensavers, since they've been
working just fine forever and ever. I guess it's possible that
previously unknown bugs in these hacks are exposed this way, but it
seems a bit far-fetched.

In my case it seems to have been a problem with waking up after sleep states, and not related to gnome-screensaver, since it only happens after going to sleep and waking up again. It seems like this may be a few different bugs that all have the same result, since it seems to manifest differently on different systems. My system is a freshly installed Gutsy, and gnome-screensaver worked just fine yesterday, but today it just blanks the screen. Previews work. Starting X without GNOME (through xinit), then starting gnome- screensaver and activating it through gnome-screensaver-command -a works. I hope this helps in fixing the bug.
