[Bug 1846665] Re: Please include 'fcitx-table-cangjie3' by default in Xubuntu and Ubuntu Studio

2019-10-09 Thread Walter Cheuk
When I install Xubuntu or Ubuntu Studio and select 'Chinese
(Traditional)' during installation, fcitx is installed automatically and
used as the default IME.

For a user looking for ready-to-use media production suite, Ubuntu
Studio is the most natural choice. (BTW, Ubuntu Kylin is targeted for
Mainland China which uses Simplified Chinese, instead of locales that
uses Traditional Chinese such as Hong Kong and Taiwan.)

And input method is the MOST BASIC feature of an OS; one shouldn't
REQUIRE an user to know the package name and run a command in a terminal
just to input his native language.

[Bug 1846665] Re: Please include 'fcitx-table-cangjie3' by default in Xubuntu and Ubuntu Studio

2019-10-03 Thread Walter Cheuk
In the list of https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fcitx , only
'cangjie' is listed as a package, but in fact it's a null package, and
'cangjie3' itself is a installable package. Please see the attached
picture.

[Bug 1846665] [NEW] Please include 'fcitx-table-cangjie3' by default in Xubuntu and Ubuntu Studio

2019-10-03 Thread Walter Cheuk
Public bug reported:

[needs-packaging] fcitx-table-cangjie3

URL: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fcitx

Please include 'fcitx-table-cangjie3' package by default in the Ubuntu
derivative that is using Fcitx as the default input method (i.e. Xubuntu
and Ubuntu Studio), or at least when the user select 'Chinese
(Traditional)' during installation.

Cangjie3 is the most used Chinese input method in Hong Kong (it's
similar to that provided in M$ windows). As Chinese in Hong Kong also
use Traditional Chinese, it should be included for their convenience
(There is no 'Chinese (Hong Kong)' option during installation, only
'Chinese (Traditional)' which is mainly biased for Taiwan).

[Bug 1535214] Re: zh_TW is not set as fallback locale when selecting Hong Kong as location

2016-01-21 Thread Walter Cheuk
I reinstall the whole system anew, and the said problem is gone. Both
zh_TW and zh_HK appear in the 'menu language' list. And output of
command line seems to fallback correctly.

However, the labels under system settings are still not translated, like
the attached picture. They are translated in 14.04.

The command completed with an error (see attached).

After a reboot, the 'language support' seems normal and I rearranged so
that zh_TW come next to zh_HK. Some commands output (apt-get) does
fallback to zh_TW, but the GUI such as the 'Personal', 'System' and
'Hardware' titles under system settings do not look perfectly as
expected (see attached).

In 15.10, when selecting Hong Kong as the user location during

- 'LANG=zh_HK:en' rather than 'zh_HK:zh_TW:en'). Worse still, there is no
- 'Chinese (Taiwan)' available in 'Menu language' in 'Language support'
+ 'LANGUAGE=zh_HK:en' rather than 'zh_HK:zh_TW:en'). Worse still, there is

like before (Both of them should be packed into one locale option
'Chinese (Traditional)'). This is a major issue as most Hong Kong users
rely on zh_TW locale as many software are not translated into zh_HK.

[Bug 1507245] [NEW] Not all language support files are installed even 'install updates' is selected during installation

2015-10-17 Thread Walter Cheuk
Public bug reported:

Not all language support files are installed even 'install updates' is
selected during installation. One have to wait for the installation to
complete, reboot, open 'language support' to install all necessary
files, logout and login, to enable very basic feature such as IMEs for
East Asian locales. Average users may not know that and will wonder why
even the basic features are not functional, even the correct language is
selected during installation. All language support files should be
installed if the users selected 'install updates', as the user already
prepared to download and install a large amount of data.

[Bug 1494378] [NEW] MythTV in Mythbuntu does not set UI language automatically

2015-09-10 Thread Walter Cheuk
Public bug reported:

In Mythbuntu (currently using 14.04.3), during installation, I selected
'Chinese (Traditional)' as the UI language and 'Hong Kong' as the
location, so the LANG env variable is zh_HK, but MythTV does not
automatically set its UI language according to the language settings of
the OS. MythTV should be able to detect the OS's language settings, so
maybe it is intialized before language info is available?

Also, as not all languages supported by Ubuntu are also supported by
MythTV, please setup a 'fallback' mechanism. For instance, please make
MythTV to use zh_TW if Ubuntu is set to, but fallback to use zh_HK if it
is not available.

[Bug 1071690] [NEW] zenity is required to run im-switch GUI, but zenity is not installed by default

2012-10-26 Thread Walter Cheuk
Public bug reported:

When installing Ubuntu into Chinese (perhaps all CJK?) locales, im-
switch is installed as a menu item by default. It requires zenity
package to run, but zenity is not installed by default! This leave
average users a strange place where the im-switch menu item can't run
for no reason.

[Bug 1042155] [NEW] Please add the string 'All %s' back to Software Center

2012-08-27 Thread Walter Cheuk
Public bug reported:

There was a string 'All %s' in Software Center to show the total number
of packages in a category, for example 'All 101' means there are 101
packages. In newer version of Ubuntu this is removed in flavor of a
single 'All' to translate. However, Chinese language requires a
classifier comes next to the number, i.e. 全部 101 個 where 全部 means 'All'
and 個 means 'pieces'. So please add the string back for translation.

[Bug 713950] Re: Improvement for zh-tw fontconfig settings of language-selector

2012-02-07 Thread Walter Cheuk
I would prefer keeping the Bitstream Vera and DejaVu entries, just move
them to a lower priority. It neither solve the problem nor make it
worse, but could leave a reference so that users can change the settings
back easier; also these two fonts may provide extra characters/glyphs as
they evolve.

2011-01-13 Thread Walter Cheuk
Public bug reported:

USB TV stick MyGica D689 is supported since kernel 2.6.33 and once
worked in alpha edition of Maverick but no longer works in release
version or with updates. It can see signal in radio channels but can't
tune the digital channels out. All tuning-related apps like mumudvb,
scan and mythtv show the same symptom. Tried the latest current kernel
but the problem is still there.

[Bug 350075] Re: Totem does not parse .asx file correctly

2010-07-06 Thread Walter Cheuk
In 10.10 alpha 2 (with most-recent updates, Totem 2.30.2), the problem
is still there. Totem still does not skill the start time parameter; the
only good news is that now I can scroll the time bar so I don't have to
wait for the time to elapse.

BTW, the option to install the required codec is gone now. Now it says
that there is no codec for the Microsoft Media Server (MMS) used in
the .asx file. I have to install gstreamer-plugins-bad manually, only
after that opening the same .asx file in question prompts me to install
gstreamer-plugins-ugly and gstreamer-ffmpeg, and the file can be played.

[Bug 493157] Re: RealPlayer Meta (.ram) files are not played correctly

2010-07-06 Thread Walter Cheuk
In 10.10 alpha 2 (with most-recent updates, Totem 2.30.2), the problems just
remain the same:
1. The start time parameter is not parsed.
2. The time bar is not scrollable, together with point 1, one have to wait for
the leading start time to elapse to start watching the actual show (the time
bar is scrollable while playing .asx file now, as I reported in bug #350075)
3. Cannot install required codec on double-clicking. The file can only be
played after install codecs for .asx file.
4. The icon of the file does not show it is a media file, though
double-clicking it will open it in Totem.

[Bug 43589] Re: [totem-gstreamer] wont play vcd for unknown reason

2010-02-20 Thread Walter Cheuk
Lucid alpha 2 with most-recent-updates tested. A VCD is detected and
played by Totem automatically, but only the license declaration (most
VCD comes with serveral .dat files under \MPEGAV, the first being the
license declaration, and the second or the last being the real movie
content).

Lucid alpha 1 tested. The disc is recognised as Video CD correctly upon
inserting, and a prompt will ask which application to open. The error
message is now 'No URI handler implemented for vcd.' within Totem.

[Bug 43589] Re: [totem-gstreamer] wont play vcd for unknown reason

2009-12-20 Thread Walter Cheuk
@Shahar,

totem vcd:// will play the first .dat only and stopped. However adding a
digit like vcd://1, vcd://2 will play each of them. Both vcd:/// and
totem /media/cdrom0/ gives 'Could not open location; you might not have
permisssion to open the file.'

@Onkar,

Software Center can't launch so can't check. However this is a fresh
setup I just install flash and some other web brower plugins.

[Bug 493157] Re: RealPlayer Meta (.ram) files are not played correctly

2009-12-14 Thread Walter Cheuk
A related problem is that the required codecs for playing cannot be
installed correctly for the first time opening a .ram file. One have to
install the codecs for .asx (Windows Media something) first, open a .ram
file, then a dialog box will pop up to let you install the required
codecs.

This is a regression since sounds work out of the box in 8.04 on my

[Bug 350075] Re: Totem does not parse .asx file correctly

2009-03-29 Thread Walter Cheuk
Hi, thank you for replying.

Yes, it is reproducible. Just open an asx file (either download from web
or open locally) with start time specified in it.

Attached is a file demotrating the problem. The actual show should start
at 12:37, which plays without problem in WMP11.

[Bug 326207] [NEW] Wrong glyph

2009-02-06 Thread Walter Cheuk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ttf-arphic-uming

I am using 8.10.

The glyph for U+965D is wrong. The right-hand-side part should be “㚒”(大
+ two “入”). Now it's “夾”(大 + two “人”), which is another character
encoded at U+965C.

One may test it here:

[Bug 43589] Re: [totem-gstreamer] wont play vcd for unknown reason

2009-01-20 Thread Walter Cheuk
I fixed the problem this way (I am using Xubuntu 8.10 upgraded from
8.04):

1. Remove 'totem-gstreamer' and install 'totem-xine'
2. Go to Menu - Applications - Settings Manager - File Manager - Advanced
- Volume Management - Configuire - Multimedia, under 'Video CDs/DVDs, change
'totem dvd:/' to 'totem vcd:/' (without the quote. I tried the gconf-editor but
can't find the volume_management tag)
3. Now insert a VCD, totem launches automatically and starts playing! The bad
news is that totem will complain when inserting DVD now. The two media type
should have different handler.

[Bug 121150] Wrong locale setting when choose Hong Kong as the location

2007-06-19 Thread Walter Cheuk
Public bug reported:

1. Get a 7.04 Ubuntu desktop CD.
2. Boot into English (i.e. change nothing and press enter to boot)
3. Run the desktop installer, choose Chinese (Traditional) as the language
4. Choose 'Hong Kong' as the location
5. The installer change to simplified Chinese. It should be traditional Chinese
6. Complete the installation, reboot. The login screen and all texts after
login use simplified Chinese, which should be Chinese (Hong Kong). Chinese
(Hong Kong) is a valid locale within Ubuntu.
7. Run a program with no native translation in Ubuntu, such as Firefox, the
texts use simplified Chinese, which should fallback to traditional Chinese.

This bug should have been reported before, but I can't find it. Thank
you.
