Also amd64.

I have noticed that although there is a crash and no updates are shown
in the application, new messages must be being received because they are
still shown via osd-notify.

[Bug 240107] Re: kernel upgrade 2.6.24-18-generic killed gspca

This camera still does not work under the new kernels.

I can get it recognised using this procedure:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5968151postcount=1

But I get green video now. But at least the camera is recognised by the
system.

Problem still exists with 2.6.27.

It appears that the module is correctly loaded, but that /dev/video0 is
not created. This is causing the problem.

[Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update

2007-05-08 Thread Warren Butler
The return to the login prompt is because Feisty changed the default to
not allow multiple logins for the same user. If you are running
Xubuntu, for example, go to Applications - Settings - Login Window and
there is an option on the General tab to disable multiple logins for a
single user. By default this is now checked, which prevents you
loggning in on :1 when you are already logged in with the same user on
:0.

[Bug 107870] Re: 7.04 screensaver freezes keyboard and mouse

2007-04-25 Thread Warren Butler
I am seeing similar behaviour, but I don't have AMD64. Mine started
soon after I added applets (weather applet) to the panel. Seems to have
gone once I removed the applet.

Anything similar in your problem?

[Bug 107870] Re: 7.04 screensaver freezes keyboard and mouse

2007-04-25 Thread Warren Butler
Yes, I am using the Nvidia restricted drivers to run Beryl. But I have
also had the freezes on the same system running compiz. Without
additional applets, I have been running for over a day now without
problems.

This is going to be fun to solve.

Cheers

[Bug 103400] Re: compiz freezes x server after screensaver kicks in

2007-04-24 Thread Warren Butler
AMD Athlon XP 1600+ processor and GeForce FX5200 showing similar
problems.

Currently, I am running beryl and I think I found a trend in my case.
See if you can replicate it.

If I add any more applets to the panel at the top, then I find that the
machine will go to blank screen and never come out again. I have the
exit applet, the date and time applet, the peaker applet, and the NM
applet (all standard form install). Also, I have the Beryl ruby icon
and an icon for Gaim (or Pidgin). See attachment.

After a fresh install, everything was fine. Until I added the weather
applet. It started freezing regularly. I removed the applet and it
went through the night no problem. An update came through and the
update icon seemed to trigger another freeze. Then fine since then.

I'll do some more testing to try and get more scientific about it.

seems to be too large for the screen, i.e. it appears shifted towards
the top of the screen.

[Bug 70562] [Edgy] Xubuntu Boot splash is barely visible and shifted up by third of screen

2006-11-06 Thread Warren Butler
Public bug reported:

Xubuntu Edgy boot splash screen is barely visible (dark and difficult to
make out) compared to different machines running the same Xubuntu Edgy.

It is also shifted up by about one third of the screen. I.e. the splash
image appears higher on the screen and there is a blank portion of about
one third of the screen at the bottom.

This is running on a Thinkpad 600E, which has a NeoMagic Corporation
NM2200 [MagicGraph 256AV] video adapter. Otherwise, GUI is fine after
the boot splash.

[Bug 68974] Re: latest flash from macromedia crashes firefox (www.nick.com)

2006-10-29 Thread Warren Butler
Same behaviour on two laptops (Thinkpad 600E and Latitude CPx) running
latest (up-to-date) Xubuntu Edgy.

If I install Macromedia Flash, gmail.google.com kills the browser. If I
delete files from plugins directory, the browser returns to normal
behaviour, but Flash items are not displayed.

[Bug 29296] Re: poor gxine performance due to poor stock settings

2006-10-29 Thread Warren Butler
I would second this as an issue.

I have a Thinkpad 600E (P2 400) running Xubunt Edgy. Thanks to this bug
and advice, I have had to increase the buffer for the audio engine to be
able to listen a CD. The CD would play but would drop out every 2
seconds for a second and then keep playing. Increasing the audio buffer
four-fold solved the problem.

On the other hand, my Dell Latitude CPx (P3 500) has the same settings
and plays CDs without the drop outs.

So, it does seem that the basic settings are only suitable for some
systems.

[Bug 51965] Re: Crystal soundcard CS4236 module not loaded on startup

2006-10-28 Thread Warren Butler
May be similar to bug #40116 - a well-known problem with the Thinkpad
600E, which also has this sound card. In this case it always
incorrectly detects it as a cd4610.

[Bug 61578] Re: [Edgy] Wrong boot disk parameter since 2.6.17-7

2006-10-25 Thread Warren Butler
This bug was originally found on a Knot 2 installation that was upgraded
until the kernel was reached 2.6.17-7.

However, I recently reinstalled the machine with Xubuntu Edgy Daily
24102006 and everything is as it should be.

Therefore, I suspect that this will not affect new installations and can
be closed from my perspective.

[Bug 61578] [Edgy] Wrong boot disk parameter since 2.6.17-7

2006-09-20 Thread Warren Butler
Public bug reported:

Since kernel 2.6.17-7, the boot parameter in /boot/grub/menu.lst is set
to /dev/sda1. Of four machines that are running latest Edgy, only one
will boot (it is SATA).

On the remaining machines, I have the manually change /dev/sda1 to
/dev/hda1 to get the machines to boot.

I believe that this is related to kernel changes around SATA/PATA from
2.6.17-7.

This bug is showing up in a lot of forum threads and is affecting a
number of Edgy testers. I suspect that there are a number of bugs
around the symptoms as well.

[Bug 59792] Re: Kernel 2.6.17-7-generic fails to boot, I get the BusyBox instead

2006-09-11 Thread Warren Butler
I can only get my 2.6.17-7 kernel to boot (same symptoms and 2.6.17-6
boots fine) by changing /dev/sda1 to /dev/hda1 in the kernel parameters.

I have 3 (older) machines that exhibit the same behaviour. A fourth
(more recent) machine boots fine, but it has a SATA disk.

[Bug 58721] Re: Matrox MGA200 doesn't work after upgrade from Dapper to Edgy

2006-09-08 Thread Warren Butler
I can also confirm this.

I can get the higher resolution, but only at low frequency.

Previously, I have been able to run the MGA200 at 1024x768 at 85Hz.
Now, if I try this the monitor shows a message saying not able to sync.

Dell Optiplex PC running Xubuntu Edgy with latest updates. Worked
without any problems in Dapper.

[Bug 40116] Re: Thinkpad 600e sound hardware not detected with Ubuntu Dapper Drake live CD (Flight 6)

2006-09-07 Thread Warren Butler
Known problem with the TP600E. The soundcard is incorrectly identified as
CS462x.

There are plenty of web pages out there describing solutions to this. But
here is the Reader's Digest version:

1. Blacklist the incorrect sound card in /etc/modprobe.dblacklist. Add lines
for

blacklist snd-cs46xx
blacklist cs46xx

as written above - with the xx's

2. Add the following lines into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias snd-card-0 snd-cs4236
options snd-cs4236 isapnp=0 cport=0x538 port=0x530 sb_port=0x220
fm_port=0x388 irq=5 dma1=1 dma2=0
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-slot-1 snd-card-1

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss

options snd cards_limit=1

NOTE: When copying and pasting the above, make sure that the line starting
with 'options...' is *one* line ending with '...dma2=0'.

3. Add the line

snd-cs4236

to the file /etc/modules

Reboot.

Also important: During power up, if you press F2 (I think), you get into
change the config. In this you need to make sure that the Fastboot option is
*disabled*.

If you are still having no success: try adding 'acpi=off pnpbois=off' at the
end of the kernel boot params. Press 'esc' during Grub countdown and select
'e' to edit the boot command and add these to the end. If need these to
allow my Xircom PCMCIA ether card to work.

One last thing: the default starting volume is very low, so make sure
that you set the volume to high using the keyboard Fn+PgUp key
combination.
