[Bug 1918924] [NEW] flashing sub menu when opening desktop properties

2021-03-12 Thread Willem Hobers
Public bug reported:

Testing Xubuntu 21.04.

When right-clicking on the desktop, the submenu for several actions appears.
If I choose "Desktop settings" the sub menu then disappears en reappears
several times before opening the desktop-settings dialogue.

I tried to record what I mean with Kazam (https://imgur.com/a/g78YH62)
but the recording does not show the flickering unfortunately.

I'm testing in VM in Boxes.

[Bug 1876613] Re: Wallpaper not retained between reboots

2020-05-13 Thread Willem Hobers
I have tried to see if the location of the wallpaper is relevant to
whether or not the wallpaper is retained. I moved the wallpaper from a
network mount to a local mount of the laptop. Unfortunately that does
not solve the problem, Is there any log I could have a look at to find
some more information?

Re: [Bug 1774646] Re: package shim-signed 1.35+13-0ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: installed shim-signed package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2018-06-01 Thread Willem Hobers
Hi Steve,

I really don't know.

I did a clean install of xubuntu 18.10 (for testing purposes) on an
existing partition on a laptop which also has 18.04 on another partition.
That 18.10 installation ended with an error at the very end (ubiquity
complained about not being able to install grub 2). Ubiquity seems to have
decided that it was installing on a uefi-machine.

Ever since then every update complains about shim-signed and
 grub-efi-amd64-signed.

You'll find more bugs reported by me about shim and grub-efi.

I'm just an end user, I did not knowingly do anything to install shim or
grub-efi. Don't know what they are, really.

Is there anything more I can provide to help?

[Bug 1774046] [NEW] Thunar should show up by name, if user searches the app by typing in 'thunar' in whiskermenu

2018-05-29 Thread Willem Hobers
Public bug reported:

On Xubuntu 18.04 when using whisker menu Thunar does not show up when the end
user types in "thunar".
Cheching with people over at xfce.org it was suggested that this is a
Xubuntu-specific phenomenon.
Please see here; https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14326

[Bug 1773849] Re: wifi connection to an protected EAP, MSCHAPv2 connection drops constantly

2018-05-28 Thread Willem Hobers
** Description changed:

  Hi all,

My wifi connection disconnects constantly when I am connected to an
eduroam/govroam access point (protected EAP, MSCHAPv2).

  The wifi driver is: rtl8812au-dkms.

  Linux Xubuntu-18-04 4.15.0-22-generic #24-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 16 12:15:17

02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8821AE
  802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter

Symptoms: the (eduroam) wifi-network is found, the wifi connection is
set up, it works for a bit and then the connection is dropped.

If I use my Android phone (which connects fine to the eduroam
connection), to tether my laptop, the connection is fine.

Also my laptop connects flawlessly to my home connection (WPA).

In kern.log I see messages like this (redacted the mac-address):

I have been using 18.04 without problems (and 16.04 before that) until
recently; so it seems the problem is recent.

If there is any more information I can provide please let me know.

  Edit: I came across a thread which seems to describe the same problem;
and people there have tried analyzing the problem. I don't understand
what people are saying there, so it may not be helpful, still:
  https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=230963

Edit 2: I'm also seeing this in 18.10 (the daily of which I am testing).

[Bug 1773849] [NEW] wifi connection to an protected EAP, MSCHAPv2 connection drops constantly

2018-05-28 Thread Willem Hobers
Public bug reported:

Hi all,

My wifi connection disconnects constantly when I am connected to an
eduroam/govroam access point (protected EAP, MSCHAPv2).

The wifi driver is: rtl8812au-dkms.

Linux Xubuntu-18-04 4.15.0-22-generic #24-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 16 12:15:17
UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8821AE
802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter

Symptoms: the (eduroam) wifi-network is found, the wifi connection is
set up, it works for a bit and then the connection is dropped.

If I use my Android phone (which connects fine to the eduroam
connection), to tether my laptop, the connection is fine.

Also my laptop connects flawlessly to my home connection (WPA).

In kern.log I see messages like this (redacted the mac-address):

[Bug 1772100] [NEW] Testing Xubuntu 18.10: there's a lag when opening whiskermenu

Testing Xubuntu 18.10:

Description:Ubuntu Cosmic Cuttlefish (development branch)
Release:18.10
willem@willem-Lenovo-ideapad-110-15ISK:~$ uname -a

willem@willem-Lenovo-ideapad-110-15ISK:~$

When I click the whiskermenu icon, or press the super-key (which I have
mapped to open whiskermenu) there is a definite lag (.5 sec?) before the
menu opens.

If there is more information I can provide, please let me know.

[Bug 1767847] [NEW] Xubuntu: clicking on network icon the network list shows up only after delay

2018-04-29 Thread Willem Hobers

2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

XFCE 4.12.

This is not always the case, but does happen: when I click the network
icon in the top panel, the network menu will open, but only show the
active network name; all other network names are not shown until after 4
or 5 seconds. : see here for what I mean:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGHx_TXsGw4=youtu.be

I don't know against which package I should report this.
Please advice; and if I should add more info, please let me know.

[Bug 1765978] [NEW] Xubuntu 18.04: key to switch monitors brings up whiskermenu; can't switch monitor

2018-04-21 Thread Willem Hobers
Public bug reported:

product: 80UD (LENOVO_MT_80UD_BU_idea_FM_Lenovo ideapad 110-15ISK)
vendor: LENOVO
version: Lenovo ideapad 110-15ISK

2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

When an extra monitor is connected (through HDMI) pressing fn+f10 should only
bring up a menu to switch monitors. But instead whiskermenu is opened before
the monitor-switching-menu.
No other fn+function key shows the same behaviour where it brings up anything
else before it does what it is supposed to do..
I have the super key mapped to open whiskermenu.

Please see: http://i.imgur.com/t0Jmzy6.png to see what I 'm seeing when
pressing fn+f10.

Actionparsnip suggests I report this as a bug against wayland.

If there's more information I can provide, please let me know.

Is this a bug? If so: which part of the system is likely to be doing
this?

[Bug 1754888] Re: Menulibre: invalid desktop files detected!

2018-03-17 Thread Willem Hobers
Sean, I can confirm that this fixes the issue for

  - usr/share/xubuntu/applications/Thunar-bulk-rename.desktop
  - usr/share/xubuntu/applications/Thunar.desktop
  - usr/share/xubuntu/applications/debian-uxterm.desktop
  - usr/share/xubuntu/applications/debian-xterm.desktop
  - usr/share/xubuntu/applications/thunar-settings.desktop
  - usr/share/xubuntu/applications/xfce4-terminal.desktop

Just the message about "vim" remains.

[Bug 1754935] Re: mate-calc crashed without a message

2018-03-14 Thread Willem Hobers
Perhaps it's helpful to mention: a shorter sequence of actions does also
lead to a crash:

- enter any digit (say 5)
- press enter (or click "=")
- press x2 (or the ctrl-2)
- press sqrt sign (or ctrl-r)
- press enter (or click "=")

The crash occurs without fail.

[Bug 1754986] Re: update-manager: WARNING:root:can not import unity GI Namespace Dbusmenu not available

2018-03-14 Thread Willem Hobers
Did an sudo update-manager from cli again; Whilst in the update-manager
I clicked on one of the links which referred me to the bug that was
being repaired by the update; firefox did not start immediately; then it
did. In cli I then had a load of messages. See attachtment.

Is this something different do you think?

[Bug 1754986] Re: update-manager: WARNING:root:can not import unity GI Namespace Dbusmenu not available

2018-03-11 Thread Willem Hobers
Just did another run of update-manager.
Started with sudo update-manager.
It ran without any messages in cli, then when the dialogue came up telling me
there were updates, I got this in cli:

willem@Xubuntu-18-04:~$ sudo update-manager
[sudo] wachtwoord voor willem:
WARNING:root:Error loading .desktop file
/usr/share/applications/gnome-sudoku.desktop: constructor returned NULL

(NO idea at all what sudoku is doing there, but there you go.)

I closed the dialogue and reran without sudo:

Then got this again:

willem@Xubuntu-18-04:~$ update-manager

** (update-manager:13604): WARNING **: 19:06:35.605: Couldn't register
with accessibility bus: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes
include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus
security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the
network connection was broken.

closed the dialogue telling me about the updates again and redid:

sudo update-manager

When the dialogue about the updates appeared cli again showed the
sudoku-message.

It seems there is still an issue?

I can reliably reproduce this by

- press enter
- crash

(tried starting with 10x10; also results in crash)

[Bug 1754935] [NEW] mate-calc crashed without a message

Public bug reported:

Using xubuntu 18.04 daily, updated.

Was not doing anything special. Did try out some wrong syntaxes, to test
the calculator. Then a crash. I assume because of the wrong syntax; but
I don't think it should have crashed. I expected a "wrong" syntax
message, or something like that.

[Bug 1490349] Re: 15:10 and 16.04: bluetoothd reports "Not enough handles to register service" at start

2017-02-11 Thread Willem Hobers
Just to -perhaps- add to any confusion: when I submit the command "sudo btmgmt
le off" in terminal, I expected the command to simply do its thing (switch off
le) and then return cli to the "waiting for input" status. Well, it doesn't:
when I submit the command and enter my password and press nothing
happens. To get back to "input mode" in terminal I have to press CTRL-C.
(I hope this description makes any sense.)

Is this normal behaviour?

[Bug 1606238] Re: gnome-software won't open

2016-09-23 Thread Willem Hobers
I am wondering whether I am seeing the same bug, or something else.
Please advice:

Running live session of Xubuntu Yakkety.
Linux xubuntu 4.8.0-11-generic #12-Ubuntu SMP Sat Sep 17 19:59:56 UTC 2016 i686
athlon i686 GNU/Linux

Starting gnome-software through the menu or through typing gnome-
software in a terminal, the gnome-software window appears, but freezes.
Then, after a few moments, I get an "Invalid error report" dialogue with
"No such file or directory".

In the terminal I see: Segmentation fault (core dumped).

In /var/crash/ there is this file _usr_bin_gnome-software.999.crash
Double clicking it gives the same "Invalid error report".

[Bug 1544480] [NEW] after upgrading to 16.04 (xubuntu) network drive not mounted

2016-02-11 Thread Willem Hobers
Public bug reported:

after upgrading to 16.04 (xubuntu) network drive not mounted
Asked by Willem Hobers on 2016-02-06

I upgraded from Xubuntu 14.04 to 16.04, because I would like to
attribute to the testing.

After the upgrade my network drive does not mount.

fstab
//192.168.178.73/Thuis /media/Thuis cifs
noserverino,guest,user=,nounix,_netdev,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777 0 0

This worked until the upgrade.

When trying to mount I get:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //192.168.178.73/Thuis,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
   need a /sbin/mount. helper program)

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so.

And if I do dmesg | tail, it gives:

[ 21.141585] cgroup: new mount options do not match the existing superblock,
will be ignored
[ 24.103109] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link is not ready

After a reboot, I tried another update && upgrade. Now I get messages

Re: [Bug 1544546] Re: after upgrade to 16.04 network drive not working; had to manually install cifs-util to get the drive to work

2016-02-11 Thread Willem Hobers
Brian,

I am sorry: after experiencing this mounting problem I experienced many
other problems as well. Therefore I decided to do a clean install, which is
running as I type this.
I realise now that this is not helpful for this particular issue.
In short: I can't provide the log files as requested.
Sorry.

[Bug 1540493] Re: package libutempter0:amd64 1.1.6-1ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2016-02-07 Thread Willem Hobers
I came accross the same error during the upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04.

Halfway during the upgrade the screen went black and nothing seemed to happen.
After some time I rebooted (reset button). The boot process did not finish.
I got a terminal working and tried "sudo apt-get install -f".
That seemed to work up to a point.

The process stopped with (sorry about the Dutch text):

Hey Tim

Thanks for your advice. I did not realize I have ppa packages installed.
But you are very likely right. Just one question, if I may: one of the
first messages the normal upgrade process gives is that it will block
the third party software sources before starting the upgrade process. In
this case that also happened. Should that not have made the upgrade
possible, just like purging the ppa's would? Just a n00b question...

Looks like you have some ppa packages installed. Upgrades with ppa's
installed are not supported, nor recommended. You should ppa-purge them
 before upgrading.

Public bug reported:

When I needed to install something through synaptic, there were a lot of
packages which needed an update. So I duly updated them. But then there
was a system error, which resulted in this report.

Before this I had wanted to upgrade to 14.10 (from 14.04) which failed
because ubuntu-desktop could not be installed/upgraded (see bug
#1387211). I did not realize the packages that needed to be updated,
according to synaptic, were probably the updates for the upgrade.
