[Bug 1875402] Re: Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 crashed my computer
Yes, it uses LVM, and no, it was not encrypted. I wanted it to be encrypted when I installed 16.04, but it turned out disk encryption is not compatible with a raid array. [Bug 1875402] Re: Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 crashed my computer
I could not reinstall ubuntu over the current installation. I ran fschk -y with a live cd (flash), it found one bit in one file that it fixed. Then I installed 20.04 replacing the already installed 20.04, which went well. Didn't lose data, had to reinstall some software. I realize I should have tried to boot the system after the fschck fix, I forgot. When the crash happened during the release-upgrade, I had a Chrome browser open and a file window. I may have done something at precisely the wrong moment, causing the crash. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1875402 Title: Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 crashed my computer To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1875402/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1875402] [NEW] Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 crashed my computer
Public bug reported: I was running 18.04, I recently upgraded from 16.04, on my desktop computer. I decided to upgrade to 20.04 not waiting for point release because my computer kept crashing on a kernel issue when I was running Intellij Idea. During the upgrade (do-release-upgrade) my computer crashed, after restart it said it couldn't read a disk. It wouldn't start, it wouldn't start with the previous kernel (4.15) nor with the pre-previous. I haven't done a complete reinstall yet, I'm first backing up files, to make sure the latest files are in the backup. Then I'll try some more to get the thing running. There is a bug nr 1874667 but I don't think that's the same: it says "upgrade keeps crashing", I can't run the upgrade again because my pc won't start at all, other than using an Ubuntu live disk (flash). Please advise what I can do to fix the system, or what to do to provide you with better info. I can't include files because I'm on another computer now. The computer was on 4.15, I downloaded a new 20.04 today, that is 5.03 or something? ** Affects: ubuntu-release-upgrader (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1875402 Title: Upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04 crashed my computer To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1875402/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I have a XPS 15 (7590), Intel® Core™ i9-9980HK (16 MB cache, tot 5,0 GHz, 8 cores). I installed Ubuntu 19.04, then upgraded when 19.10 became available. On Nov 18 there was a bios upgrade. [Bug 1787197] Re: Touchpad doesn't work well after upgrade to 18.04
I installed the linux-image-etc file for 4.18, then the linux-headers file installation says "no space left on device". Before, I had removed every file of previous kernels and installations, I only have 4.15.34 files in /boot. I wanted to increase the size of the boot partition because that's an issue on every linux update, but as my disk is encrypted, that's a lot of work. Sorry. On Ubuntu until 16.04, I could update by removing old kernels from /boot. [Bug 1787197] Re: Touchpad doesn't work well after upgrade to 18.04
Waiting to hear from Launchpad about your decision... Created new window in existing browser session. dpkg-query: no packages found matching linux I don't know what package the touchpad is in, so I didn't use ubuntu-bug. The apport-collect doesn't work now. What do I do? ** Description changed: I upgraded my laptop (Dell XPS 13, older version) to 18.04. Now the touchpad doesn't work, unless I hit it very hard. How do I increase the sensitivity of the touchpad so I can use it like I've always done? [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze
I have been working with no problems since Jan. 20. Today an Ubuntu update wanted me to reboot, then after reboot the computer froze when I started Android Studio. Rebooted again, same, and again. What seems to help is when I type IBUS_ENABLE_SYNC_MODE=1 ibus-daemon -xrd (from here: http://tools.android.com/knownissues/ibus) I'm not sure if this actually works, but now I disabled ibus and I have no freeze. [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze
Today I tried the daily build of Ubuntu 16.04, from a live cd usb. Nouveau worked fine, but I can't seem to run Android Studio on a live cd, so I couldn't test the freeze issue. There was a problem with java. Maybe I should create a live cd usb with a large disk space, so I can install java and as on that. [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze
I tested Nouveau with the standard iso from the ubuntu site. Should I test with the daily build? Currently, I don't have any issues, after rebooting after testing with Nouveau. I hesitate to test right now, I'd like to get some work done first, I"m afraid that rebooting will give me freezes again. [Bug 1531845] Re: Xorg freeze
Nouveau makes it worse. When I start Android Studio, Firefox immediately grays out, AS stops loading before it even opens a window. Then the computer remains frozen, until I stop java processes in a shell. Also, I don't see how a graphics issue can make CPU2 or CPU3 hang, but never one of the other CPUs. It can't be just a bug in Android Studio, because AS should not be capable of hanging up my computer. Also, it can't be just a bug in Ubuntu or in the bios or cpu, because it only happens with Android Studio (except once in gedit and once in a shell). I suspect AS does something other software doesn't do, which triggers a glitch elsewhere. Yesterday night, I ran Prime95 software to calculate Mersenne prime numbers. This kept my cpus at 500% with low priority processes. All software would still run normally, not slower, but AS wouldn't run. It pushed prime to using over 600%, which is weird, and it wouldn't start, just hang until killed. I tried Prime95 because they found a glitch in Intel Skylake cpus. My cpu is 5th generation, not Skylake. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1531845 Title: Xorg freeze To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1531845/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Oh, I'm sorry. A while ago I re-opened a bug, then I was told I should file a separate bug instead. Never mind. I haven't tried this particular bug with nouveau. The reason I use Nvidia drivers is that I couldn't get my system to work with nouveau. I used to use nouveau until about a year ago. If you want me to try, I can try. Fyi, the bug didn't occur between the first boot with the new bios, and the first reboot after that. I rebooted just to see if that wouldn't bring back the bug. I usually don't reboot that often. Public bug reported: 10 minutes after bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1531845 was closed, it happened again. I am still experiencing this issue. Not just with Android Studio, it also happened when loading a file in Gedit. CPU2 goes to 100% and stays there, while Gedit or AS stops responding. In the System Monitor "Processes" tab, no processes are taking more than 1 or 2% of a CPU. The process that froze has 0%, but >600Mb memory usage. The process unfreezes typically after 5 minutes. Downgrading solved part of the issue. Android Studio manages to keep one CPU busy for 100% for up to five minutes, during which tme other programs stop responding too.
