works with kernel 4.2.0-18-generic. In all other cases (e.g. for the
latest kernel), the following happens:

$ sudo modprobe -v --force 8812au
insmod /lib/modules/4.2.0-27-generic/updates/dkms/8812au.ko
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert '8812au': Exec format error

When I get this error, I also find the following line in dmesg:

[ 164.444534] 8812au: disagrees about version of symbol module_layout

I'm using the Ubuntu provided package for 8812au (that will be compiled
with dkms):

$ dkms status
rtl8812au, 4.3.8.12175.20140902+dfsg, 4.2.0-18-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl8812au, 4.3.8.12175.20140902+dfsg, 4.2.0-27-generic, x86_64: installed
rtl8812au, 4.3.8.12175.20140902+dfsg, 4.4.0-040400-generic, x86_64: installed
vboxhost, 5.0.14, 4.2.0-18-generic, x86_64: installed
vboxhost, 5.0.14, 4.2.0-27-generic, x86_64: installed
vboxhost, 5.0.14, 4.4.0-040400-generic, x86_64: installed

(As you can see from above, I also tried a vanilla 'mainline' kernel,
but with the same result.)

Instead of the error I expect the kernel module 8812au to work with (at
least) all 'official' wily kernel (e.g. 4.2.0-27-generic).

[Bug 1408275] Re: Unable to log in with lightdm

2015-01-18 Thread aanno
Sorry for being fuzzy. This is what happens:

# lightdm greeting screen comes up after boot as expected.
# trying to log in from the lightdm greeting screen (with whatever user to
whatever desktop environment)
# X11 is stopped, screen falls back to vt (black screen with a few white
characters on it) for half a second or so. There is some output (error message)
on vt, but there is no time for me to read it.
# lightdm greeting screen is started again. I'm still not logged-in (but I can
try over and over again).

Work-around:
As already mentioned, logging in is possible by:
# Cntrl-Alt-F2 (or some other combination) to get to a (non-graphical) vt.
# Log in (non-graphical, i.e. without X11, lightdm greeting screen) on the vt
# Starting the X11 user session, e.g. with 'startx /usr/bin/startkde -- :3'

[Bug 1385730] [NEW] Utopic: fglrx don't start on AMD e2-2000 (Radeon HD 7340)

2014-10-25 Thread aanno
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to utopic (14.10), neither fglrx (nor fglrx-update) works as
expected any more.
System starts in graphical mode (X11) but driver is fbdev.

This is a Asus E2KM1I based system (e2-2000/Radeon HD 7340). fglrx (and
fglrx-update) have worked before upgrading.

Work-around: Use open source ATI driver.

See attachments for more information (based on a fglrx try).

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2014-05-18 Thread aanno
Well, IMHO bluetooth is one big mess in ubuntu. I'm using a BT headset
for nearly 7 years now, and it has NEVER worked without some quirks.

Even this would be OK for me, but the quirks differ not only between
releases but also between updates. Hence you can never be sure if the
headset will work on any day... (BTW, why the hell we are STILL sitting
here with the legacy Bluez 4.x stack? I guess an upgrade to Bluez 5.x
could not make the state of affairs more encumbering.)

The one and only good news that I've got that I SUCCESSFULLY USED MY BT
HEADSET YESTERDAY (17.05.2014) on an up-to-date ubuntu 14.04/trusty.
This is trick/quirk that made things work:

 pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover

Given that, there are a couple of ticket out here that points into this
direction:

[Bug 1320498] Re: Using BT Headset (a2dp) is not possible: Bluetooth: re-auth of legacy device is not possible.

2014-05-18 Thread aanno
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1283003 ***

As I reported in bug #1283003, the problem could be circumvented with:

 pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover

However bug #1283003 does NOT mention 're-auth of legacy device is not
possible' in any way.

[Bug 1320498] [NEW] Using BT Headset (a2dp) is not possible: Bluetooth: re-auth of legacy device is not possible.

2014-05-17 Thread aanno
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 14.04/trusty the use of my BT headset (an old Motorola HT 820)
is not possible any more. Pairing is successful, however I always find
the following in /var/log/syslog when I trying to connect to the A2DP
service:

May 17 16:09:58 silberfisch2 kernel: [25385.859723] input: 00:07:A4:B5:F1:5E as
/devices/virtual/input/input22
May 17 16:12:18 silberfisch2 kernel: [25526.017139] Bluetooth: re-auth of
legacy device is not possible.

This is a regression i.r.t. older version of Ubuntu, for example I *was*
able to use the device with Ubuntu 13.10/saucy.

[Bug 1296112] [NEW] Failed to load module module-alsa-sink

2014-03-22 Thread aanno
Public bug reported:

In ubuntu 13.10/saucy I'm not able to create a sink for a bluetooth
headset (it has worked with ubuntu 13.04 without problems). When I do:

At present, I could only speak for kubuntu/kde. The problem is gone when
using 'Radiance' as 'GTK2 Theme'. However, if I understand the KDE guys
right, this simply means that libglib is NOT used. Per consequence the
error cannot occur...

[Bug 1251849] [NEW] [VX820] Regression: driver does not work on Samsung NC20

2013-11-16 Thread aanno
Public bug reported:

I'm using a Samsung NC20 since a couple of years now. It has never been

As I already mentioned on #1245468 I could not verify that changing
GTK_MODULES, UBUNTU_MENUPROXY, or GTK_IM_MODULE helps in any way.

However, I could verify that the problem GOES AWAYS IN KUBUNTU/KDE when
doing:

System Settings - Application Themes - GTK - Choose GTK2 Theme

Choose 'Radiance' instead of 'oxygen-gtk'

2013-11-14 Thread aanno
Dear sirjoseca,

I rechecked this carefully. For me (as a Kubuntu/KDE user) using

export UBUNTU_MENUPROXY=''

and afterwards starting eclipse makes things A LOT better but the
problem does NOT go away. I've still got spurious Java VM crashes, most
commonly with SWT 'cancel' buttons. But I have to admit that this is
relatively rare.

However, with

System Settings - Application Themes - GTK - Choose GTK2 Theme

and choosing 'Radiance' instead of 'oxygen-gtk' the problem is gone
COMPLETELY.

[Bug 1245468]

2013-11-13 Thread aanno
Dear Hugo,

thank you for your prompt response. Notice that I've reported the bug to
(a) the distribution and (b) eclipse. Just to be very explicit: The bug
_only_ occurs with the oxygen-gtk2 theme. If I use the 'Radiance'
theme, everything is all right. Please also notice that a java crash
dump does contain many information that are of significance for C/C++
developers, including a (symbolic) trace to the root problem.

[Bug 1246214] [NEW] kde-window-manager (4:4.11.2-0ubuntu1): missing dependency

2013-10-30 Thread aanno
Public bug reported:

The deb package is missing the depencency to libwayland. As consequence,
no windows decorations make KDE hardly useable.

Work-around: Use the compiz windows manager (system-settings - standard
components - window manager).

Hhm, libhybris _is_ installed (as a dependency of powerd) but I don't
needed neither. libegl1-mesa-drivers _is_ also installed.

libhybris-common1 _is_ installed (as a dependency of unity8). I try
unity from time to time, but at present I normally use KDE.

When I deinstall libhybris, the problem is gone. For me as 'end user' it
was very difficult to grasp this. Thank you for support and sorry for
the noise. For me, it has really looked like there is something wrong
with kwin...

Thank you for support.

[Bug 1245468] [NEW] libglib2.0-0 (2.38.0-1ubuntu1) causes eclipse/swt to crash

2013-10-28 Thread aanno
Public bug reported:

Newer Versions of libglib2.0-0 (2.38.0-1ubuntu1, saucy salamander, aka
13.10) causes eclipse/swt to crash.

This is bug is triggered from an 'official' eclipse install. I haven't
tried the eclipse that comes with ubuntu because it is not what a
professional java programmer needs.

Observed behaviour:
- Eclipse regulary crashes (see included VM dumps). The bug is normally trigger
by hitting a SWT Button (e.g. Search - File Search - Cancel Button).

Expected behaviour:
- libglib2.0-0 in saucy should work without any issue against a 'offical'
eclipse/swt.

[Bug 986585] [NEW] eGalax touchscreen quirks with 12.04/precise

2012-04-21 Thread aanno
Public bug reported:

Every touch makes the cursor move first registers a click. Because of
this, mouse cursor is moved, but all text get selected. In addition (and
for additional confusion) there are 2 (yes, TWO) mouse cursors on
screen. One is moving reasonably, and one moving very strange diagonally
across the screen.

This is a upgrade from 11.10/oneiric, where the touchscreen has worked
good (after some configuration). Hence the device is calibrated.

[Bug 888909] [NEW] COMPOSITE and XINERAMA/PANORAMIX

2011-11-11 Thread aanno
Public bug reported:

From
[http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=84a14fab8f930ef1855444ae4e9e3e14ee008328]
(and the discussion on [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xinerama] and
[http://gentoohaven.com/2010/04/13/xinerama-composite/])I would guess
that COMPOSITE and XINERAMA/PANORAMIX no longer conflict.

However, I'm using XINERAMA on oneiric/11.10 on a Radeon HD 5450 (fglrx
enabled) and 'xdpyinfo' does _not_ report the COMPOSITE extension. As a
consequence desktop effects in KDE do not work and the KDE system
settings also report that 'The needed x-extensions (XComposite and
XDamage) are not available'.

[Bug 561802] Re: [i915] blank screen on Latitude E6410

2010-09-15 Thread aanno
Sorry for being fuzzy about this: Vanilla 2.6.36-rc4 (from kernel.org)
will _partly_ fix this. On my Latitude E6510, I (first) see a
blank/black screen after booting. I wait for some time (30 seconds), and
then switch to a (virtual) console (e.g. with ctrl-alt F2). I still see
a blank screen. But now I switch back to X11 (with crtrl-alt F7), and
_then_ I could see the login screen...

This is to say: X11 is usable after manual interaction. A

Vanilla 2.6.36-rc4 (from kernel.org) (partly) fixes this issue (at least
on my machine): After switching to a console and back to X11, display is
working as expected.

Also see http://lwn.net/Articles/404632/

However, there still seems minor gitches: Before rc4, I used the vesa
driver (configured in /etc/X11/xorg.conf) together with 'nomodeset' as
work-around. However with rc4, I can't use it with rc4 (blank screen,
with and without 'nomodeset').

[Bug 576728] Re: Trying to install package from jdk-6u20-linux-x64.bin fails

2010-05-12 Thread aanno
The problem with the proposed approach (using sun-java*) is that there
is *no* such package for lucid. To be honest, I understand that debian
is for 'open source' software, and their support for application not
matching *their* definition of 'open source' has always been flacky.

However, I can't image that I'm the only only who *needs* a JAVA6 (or
even better a JAVA6 JDK). As there are no packages for lucid, and there
is no easy way to make them on my own (as java-package *is* broken), the
state-of-affairs is uncomfortable.

I would like to see the java-package taken over and revived by ubuntu...
