Re: [Bug 2062574] Re: Another fresh insstall
Thanks for your reply Sebastien - I can confirm it was an SSD issue. I re-seated the SSD and it solved the problem. It was a little confusing as the errors seemed to point to the USB media - not the SSD but all good now! Thanks for reaching out to assist. [Bug 1971195] [NEW] gnome-remote-desktop leads to a session crash inside qemu with virtio-vga
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. On a jammy host, create a jammy guest: $ qemu-img create -f qcow2 vm.qcow2 50G $ qemu-system-x86_64 -accel kvm -cpu host -smp cpus=4 -m 3072 -device virtio-vga -display gtk,grab-on-hover=on -hda vm.qcow2 -cdrom [jammy ISO] 2. Install Ubuntu in that VM (minimal install), no problems are expected yet. 3. After the installation is concluded and the VM reboots, try to login using the Wayland session (it should be the default, no need to select anything). It will fail and bring you back to the login screen (apparently due to a gnome-shell crash; I don't think the details are relevant to the problem here). What is expected: that both the Wayland and X11 sessions work out-of- the-box. Workaround: remove gnome-remote-desktop, and the Wayland session will work just fine in the conditions described above. This is why I'm reporting this issue in gnome-remote-desktop instead of Wayland or gnome-shell or qemu. I might be wrong though... Extra information: 1. gnome-shell starts as expected if the X11 session is selected instead. 2. [Bug 1861327] Re: [needs-packaging] Can't run npm because of outdated nodejs in repos
I'd like to echo Adam's point. Ubuntu 22.04 is about to be released with Node 12, which is EOL this month (April 2022)! It seems almost unreasonable to release Ubuntu 22.04 with the oldest currently supported Node version, and have only a week or two until it is EOL, when there are already two newer Node LTS releases available. Node 16 was released in April 2021, so whatever packaging policy means that it won't be included in Ubuntu 22.04 needs to be addressed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1861327 Title: [needs-packaging] Can't run npm because of outdated nodejs in repos To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nodejs/+bug/1861327/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1855681] Re: Cannot purge a removed ppa
I believe that this may have happened to me with ppa:oibaf/graphics- drivers $ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers Updating packages lists PPA to be removed: oibaf graphics-drivers Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: oibaf graphics-drivers $ In this case, the ppa exists for newer releases of ubuntu but the support for bionic has been removed. In any case, I am stuck with packages that were installed via the ppa but I have no way to revert them to official package types. This seems to prevent do-release- upgrade from completing. [Bug 1069133] Re: Get upgrade error 12.04 - 12.10 "Could not determine upgrade" - xorg from ppa
@Brian: Here I am coming over from bug 1920829. I was at first tempted to comment in the original bug but the warning message on the page, "Remember, this bug report is a duplicate of bug #1069133. Comment here only if you think the duplicate status is wrong" prompted me to come here. So, here I am! Unfortunately, I tried the ppa-purge route and failed: $ sudo ppa-purge ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers Updating packages lists PPA to be removed: oibaf graphics-drivers Warning: Could not find package list for PPA: oibaf graphics-drivers $ When I looked online for ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers, it appears that the packages in this ppa are no longer available for Bionic. I really don't know what "ppa-purge" actually does but what if the ppa is no longer available on the server? Is that why ppa-purge didn't work? Is there a way to get the missing package list somewhere else? If I can get hold of this list, where should it be located on my system and how can I get ppa-purge to use this specially-obtained list? Barring that, is it possible to just force a re-installation of the official packages that was altered when the ppa:/oibaf/graphics-drivers was installed? Is there a way to find out from the logs which packages need to be re-installed? I have a question open here as well: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+question/696223 There is a plethora of additional information in this question. [Bug 1920829] Re: do-release-upgrade fails complaining of held broken packages that apt-get upgrade or dist-upgrade does not report
@Chris: Thank you for your suggestion; I will go to those sites and inquire further. Nevertheless, when the release upgrade process was terminated, the terminal output did include the recommendation to "please report this bug." I presume that this recommendation was put there so that the maintainers may be able to identify potential issues that may correct this kind of behaviour in the future. If I find from elsewhere that it was somehow my fault that this is happening, I will gladly return here to mark this bug as "Invalid" but, for now, I am assuming that this behaviour is due to some error in the software since the cause is not at all obvious. In any case, I am willing to defer the "nuclear option" (i.e. re-install the OS) until a definite cause of the issue can be found. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1920829 Title: do-release-upgrade fails complaining of held broken packages that apt- get upgrade or dist-upgrade does not report To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1920829/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1885424] Re: Create package for Thor 1.0.1
This isn't a problem in the ruby-thor package (although it could do with an update). This is a problem with the ruby-bundler package. Specifically, the upstream bundler codebase vendors Thor under a separate namespace (Bundler::Thor) to avoid this specific issue. Bundler itself needs Thor, but many projects do too. So to make something like "bundle exec (whatever) work, without version clashes, bundler uses a different namespace for its internal copy of Thor. The Debian/Ubuntu ruby-bundler package is broken though, since it rips out the carefully vendored code in a specific namespace and uses ruby- thor in the Thor namespace. Here is the patch that causes the issue: ``` From: Christian Hofstaedtler Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2018 14:51:43 +0100 Subject: Replace bundled libraries with system versions Forwarded: not-needed --- a/lib/bundler/vendored_molinillo.rb +++ b/lib/bundler/vendored_molinillo.rb @@ -1,4 +1,4 @@ # frozen_string_literal: true module Bundler; end -require_relative "vendor/molinillo/lib/molinillo" +require "molinillo" --- a/lib/bundler/vendored_thor.rb +++ b/lib/bundler/vendored_thor.rb @@ -2,7 +2,7 @@ module Bundler def self.require_thor_actions -require_relative "vendor/thor/lib/thor/actions" +require "thor/actions" end end -require_relative "vendor/thor/lib/thor" +require "thor" ``` -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1885424 Title: Create package for Thor 1.0.1 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ruby-thor/+bug/1885424/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1904744] [NEW] cups-browsed crashes when printing test page to remote printer
Public bug reported: 1) lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS Release:20.04 2) apt-cache policy cups-filters cups-filters: Installed: 1.27.4-1 Candidate: 1.27.4-1 Version table: *** 1.27.4-1 500 500 http://hk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3) I have several Ubuntu 20.04 LTS desktops configured to print to a CUPS print server with 4 printers. 3 of the printers work OK, the other one I can print a test page locally, I would expect sending a test page from one of the desktops would result in the test page printing. 4) but sending a test page from one of the desktops results in the client CUPS showing: Paused - "No destination host name supplied by cups-browsed for printer "Grassjewel", is cups-browsed running?" [Bug 1902921] Re: Scaling one monitor (to 1.5x in my case) can cause Firefox to lose window features (titlebar, buttons, bookmark bar)
@vanvugt Can you describe which parts of Firefox you can't tell are missing? I can update the information if necessary. Regarding which parts are missing here's a list: - titlebar/tabs - minimize, maximize, close buttons - Back/forward/refresh/home buttons, address bar, add-on buttons, settings hamburger menu - Bookmark bar - Scrollbar Navigation with escape button works. Mouse works. Scrolling with mouse works. Initial right-click of the mouse shows the context menu offset from the mouse (showed up on Primary display instead of Secondary where the mouse was clicked). Other right clicks of the mouse show the context menu in the correct place. The dev console shows with all of the buttons and options present. Other applications in windowed or fullscreen mode display on the monitor in the correct resolution and with the window chrome. ** Attachment added: "Screenshot_2020-11-04_22-51-51.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/1902921/+attachment/5431401/+files/Screenshot_2020-11-04_22-51-51.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1902921 Title: Scaling one monitor (to 1.5x in my case) can cause Firefox to lose window features (titlebar, buttons, bookmark bar) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/1902921/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1901828] [NEW] upgrade modifies /etc/default/grub inappropriately
Public bug reported: If I have: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" in /etc/default/grub, boot hangs with "Failed to start Light Display Manager". No problem, I delete the line and run update-grub. However, running apt upgrade sometimes appends the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" to /etc/default/grub, resulting in a failed boot after upgrade. I am sure it is appending the line to the file because the rest of the file is unchanged. This has been happening occasionally for a long time. Most recently, it happened when I used do-release-upgrade to go from 18.04 to 20.04 I guess some package thinks it is a good idea to add this option, but I don't know which one, or how to stop it. [Bug 1889920] [NEW] Grub unable to boot Ubuntu when using theme with PNG images
Public bug reported: I normally use Linux Mint, but I tested the behaviour with Ubuntu and saw the same results. The problem seems to occur when: - I use Grub installed by Ubuntu 20.04. - I install a Grub theme which has PNG images in it. - I try to boot into an Ubuntu 20.04 OS. When I select the OS from the menu, the screen just goes black and remains that way. If I run it using the other options (where I can see the output), the last thing it prints is "Loading initial ramdisk..." and then just hangs there. To avoid this problem, I can: - Boot into an Ubuntu 18.04 OS - the problem doesn't seem to occur there. - Manually remove references to images in the theme file. I'm trying this on a Dell XPS 9380. It didn't matter if I was using a newer kernel (5.4.0-40) or the default one upon install (5.4.0-26). It wasn't specific to the installation, since I had multiple installs trying to debug the issue (both of Linux Mint and Ubuntu). I tested with the grub2-theme-mint-2k package, but then also tried downloading other themes from other sites and saw the same issue. Removing the references to the png images in the file allowed it to work - it didn't seem to matter that the "insmod png" line was still present. And it's also really strange that it only seemed to affect Ubuntu 20.04, but not 18.04 (using kernel 5.3.0-59). I haven't seen anyone else complain about such a thing, so I don't know if it's something highly specific to my setup that's causing it. ** Affects: grub (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "Diff of grub.cfg between working and non-working configuration" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1889920/+attachment/5397523/+files/grub.diff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1889920 Title: Grub unable to boot Ubuntu when using theme with PNG images To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub/+bug/1889920/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1877577] [NEW] Multi-monitor not behaving correctly when one display turned off
Public bug reported: The release is 20.04. The gnome-session version is 3.36.0-2ubuntu1. What is expected: 1. When either monitor is turned off, the monitor that is still on becomes the only monitor. 2. The mouse should work. What happens: 1. When the primary monitor is turned off only, the space is not updated. 2. When the non-primary monitor is turned off only, the mouse is frozen. This is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1709159 Long version: I have two identical monitors hooked up on HDMI. Let's call them #1 and #2, with #1 left of #2. #1 is primary. Case 1: Turn off #1 (the primary), leaving #2 on: The display has not been updated to detect the turned off monitor. The mouse can move around on #2, including going to the #1 space even though #1 is turned off. When #1 is turned back on, everything works fine too. Case 2: Turn off #2 (the non-primary) leaving #1 on: The display *has* been updated to detect the turned off monitor. The mouse cannot move at all, even though the cursor is visible on #1. This is When #2 is turned back on, there is another display update (another flicker, plus a Pulseaudio notification of new sink detected since the monitor has built-in speakers). Other notes: My card is AMD RX480. [Bug 1877191] [NEW] Snap store doesn't change the "Install" button to show installing status after being clicked
Public bug reported: When using the snap store there is no feedback after pressing the Install button. The button continues to show "Install", is still active, and is still green. The only way to show some sort of feedback is to press the button again, then the progress bar will display briefly until an error pops up informing the user that the snap store is busy installing the application. Expected behavior: While installing an application, the Install button for that application should hide or show a different status ("Cancel"). Additionally, there should be a way to see all installations that are currently running, if the user can install multiple applications at once, to cancel any of them from within the snap store. [Bug 1832222] Re: using aakar font reboots printer
Because the Aakar font is part of the fonts-gujr-extra package. To re-phrase the problem: On certain text input, the Aakar font emits a reset command to the printer. In contrast, other non-Latin fonts (e.g. STZhongsong) when presented with Latin characters gracefully degrade to a default Latin font. Alternatively, it could be replaced in the output by a "unknown character" symbol, there is even a Unicode code point for that: U+FFFD REPLACEMENT CHARACTER used to replace an unknown, unrecognized or unrepresentable character. That would give a visible clue to the location of the user's mistake. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/183 Title: using aakar font reboots printer To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fonts-gujr-extra/+bug/183/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

some precision, actually in the "buggy" container, the file /usr/lib/locale/locale- archive is created in all case with the permission (regardless with sudo or directly as root user): -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.7M Sep 2 23:17 locale-archive however 1. if the file was generated as root, (not with sudo) , the admin user can only get "fr_FR.utf-8" when doing sudo locale -a 2. if I chmod 777 the file /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive then the normal user can see -it I need to check tomorrow the permission the file had when running with the previous linux-aws version -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1842364 Title: sudo localedef from docker does not work anymore after upgrade from 4.4.0-1088-aws to 4.4.0-1090-aws To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-aws/+bug/1842364/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1842364] [NEW] sudo localedef from docker does not work anymore after upgrade from 4.4.0-1088-aws to 4.4.0-1090-aws
Public bug reported: step to reproduce take an AMI: ubuntu/images/hvm-ssd/ubuntu-xenial-16.04-amd64-server-20190816 (it runs by default the version 4.4.0-1090-aws of the kernel) install docker on it and launch a debian:stretch instance (can reproduce with ubuntu:latest) curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo apt-key add - sudo add-apt-repository "deb [arch=amd64] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) stable" sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install -y docker-ce sudo docker run -it debian:stretch bash from within the docker , install sudo and create a user "admin" part of the sudo group install the package 'locales', and then try to activate the locale fr_FR.UTF-8: apt-get install -y sudo locales adduser admin usermod -aG sudo admin su admin sudo localedef -i fr_FR -c -f UTF-8 -A /usr/share/locale/locale.alias fr_FR.UTF-8 locale -a it displays : C C.UTF-8 POSIX now if you run the same command as root, from within the very same docker container: localedef -i fr_FR -c -f UTF-8 -A /usr/share/locale/locale.alias fr_FR.UTF-8 locale -a it displays correctly: C C.UTF-8 POSIX fr_FR.utf8 I've been able to track down that with the AMI ubuntu/images/hvm-ssd/ubuntu-xenial-16.04-amd64-server-20190807(ami-0e253b69fb96577d1) the problem does not appear if you apt-get upgrade , it still does not appear, BUT if you dist-upgrade, it then upgrades linux-aws from 4.4.0-1088-aws to 4.4.0-1092-aws, and if you reboot, then the bugs appears too , which to me proves that there's an issue between docker and version of the linux kernel ** Affects: linux-aws (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1842364 Title: sudo localedef from docker does not work anymore after upgrade from 4.4.0-1088-aws to 4.4.0-1090-aws To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-aws/+bug/1842364/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1767672] Re: "pip3 install cffi" core dumps
I disagree with the "Invalid" status. "pip3 install cffi" downloads and installs cffi-1.11.5-cp36-cp36m- manylinux1_x86_64.whl successfully on CentOS7 X64 and Debian 9 x64 without issues. [Bug 1744590] Re: do-release-upgrade -d fails without information to resolve failure
I was finally able to proceed with the upgrade by: - purging xserver and reinstalling (successful, but no luck with do-release-upgrade) - manually installing the held-back ati and radeon video drivers (successful, but no luck with do-release-upgrade) - removed all additional ppas (other software tab in software and updates utility), including any ubuntu ones (I'd previously only removed 3rd party ones) - did a more thorough cleanup of packages: sudo apt-get --purge autoremove sudo apt-get clean all sudo apt-get purge $(dpkg -l | awk '/^rc/ { print $2 }') The last command cleaned up a large amount of quite old stale packages. I changed the software update options to notify me of any new version (was set to LTS) the re-ran the do-release-upgrade (without the -d option) At that point I was successfully able to continue with the upgrade. So my immediate pain is resolved. However it would have been nice for the upgrade process to inform me of the specific invalid configuration it had encountered, rather than stopping with only vague references to possible conflicts with 3rd party packages, etc. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1744590 Title: do-release-upgrade -d fails without information to resolve failure To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-release-upgrader/+bug/1744590/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This can be caused by: * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu I expect it's most likely to be a 3rd party package. I have no problem with removing any needed package and attempting reinstall after the upgrade, but I have no idea what package to look into.
