i recommend the ubuntu people blacklist the new ata_piix driver for now.

the workaround i used is as follows:

 * add the following lines to your /etc/initramfs-tools/modules:
 piix
 ide_generic
 ide_cd
 ide_disk
 * run update-initramfs -u

then update /etc/fstab and perhaps your grub configuration.
note: the modules libata, ata_generic and scsi_mod are still loaded, i
haven't figured out how to get rid of those yet, i suppose i could always do
 it manually.

how about blacklisting them, /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.

Re: [Bug 94981] Re: Extremely Slow boot up PATA disk detected as sda

2007-04-02 Thread anubhavrakshit
Wow!Even i got my hdd workin properly.
Steps Followed:
1.Setting BIOS to factory defaults
2.changing hda-sda in /boot/grub/device.map
3.update-initramfs -u
4.grub-install /dev/sda

After all this; i shutdown the computer and remove the power cable
from the HDD.
Wait for some 30 secs, then restart the computer and Voila! everything
works like it should.
Also like Henrik mentioned i had some error messages from Grub(i have
turned on debug in grub) and now there are no error's,which makes me
believe that some register settings got screwed up and even a RESET
wasn't helping matters.A cold boot and above changes some how brought
back sanity.
Thanks Henrik and Ben :)

[Bug 94981] Re: Extremely Slow boot up PATA disk detected as sda

Also if you notice in the same log

[ 26.148695] ata1.00: ATA-7: ST3802110A, 2AAA, max UDMA/100
[ 26.148700] ata1.00: 156301488 sectors, multi 16: LBA48
[ 26.320476] ata1.01: ATAPI, max UDMA/33
[ 26.332385] ata1.00: configured for UDMA/33
[ 26.504114] ata1.01: configured for UDMA/33

why is ata1.00: configured for UDMA/33 when it is detected as UDMA/100
?

On pressing power button this is the output

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ lshal -m

Start monitoring devicelist:
-
acpi_PWRF condition ButtonPressed = power
computer_logicaldev_input_0 condition ButtonPressed = power

On 3/13/07, Peter Whittaker [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
Ralf, we should be able to detect the behavior you posit in comment#13.
Could you try this test and report back, please?

 Open a terminal window

 Run lshal -m

Press the keyboard power off key

The command lshal -m monitors for important events and device property
changes - the keycode event generated by pressing the poweroff button
 should appear there.

If there are two events generated, both should be there

(To capture the output of lshal, you may need to copy and paste from the
terminal, or run it within script piping to a file or another process
does not seem to work, at least not for me - contact me directly if you
 need assistance with script)
